If a product catches your eye, do you wait to buy or go for it?

If a product catches your eye, do you wait to buy or go for it? If you wait, how long do you hold off?

If it’s really expensive or something I just know I won’t wear often, then I try to wait.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

If I can swatch it, love it and can afford it, I’ll buy it:)
If its expensive and/or claims to have specific and marvelous qualities I definitely wait and search for reviews before. Here’s my first stop! ^-

I always wait until I can see at least 2 swatches on different sites or can swatch it myself. Then I determine how much I can spend, how often I will or won’t wear it and then pick up what I decide on!

Rachael Avatar

I’m trying to spend less so right now I’m waiting, but if a week or two later I’m still lusting, I’ll decide to buy. But I like to buy in bulk to save on shipping, so I’ll wait till I find more things! haha! I do a lot of planning and waiting I guess. :p

I wait for reviews first! And I’m pretty impulsive when it comes to wanting things. So I usually try to wait and if I still want it at a later time I know I probably won’t regret buying it.

Perri Avatar

Before I purchase I like to read reviews and see what some other people think. Then if the product still appeals to me I go and see it in person, if possible. But sometimes I just go and buy it if I can’t resist!

Carrie Ann Avatar

It depends. I’ll often wait to look at reviews & swatches online. If it’s on the expensive side (and not limited edition) or something I don’t feel I need right away, I’ll wait for an online discount or one of those gift w/ purchase offers.

Simrit Avatar

I can be impulsive sometimes. So, if it is a MAC, I would usually buy it…if it is some other, i usually resist till the reviews come out.

Arantzazu Avatar

I think I always wait (I try to teach my self not to buy too easily…)
But if something really catches my eye and I can afford it, sooner or later I end up buying it! =)

Harley Avatar

I usually wait for a sale. I really want to add a Nars blush to my collection but I have enough blushes to last me until a good sale pops up online somewhere.

Yazmin Avatar

i never used to wait. I always used to buy it as soon as i know it was available (like the Mac Give Me liberty of london collection) i waited until the store opened on the release day to get it (sad i know) But now i rely on product reviews and swatches and comparisons in my collection just to i can make a decision.

Umm, I usually just buy it! If I see it, love it (or lust after it, LOL!) and I can afford it, then I most often buy it right then.
If it’s really spendy AND I’m not completely sure I’ll use it enough, then I’ll probably wait, but only a week, two at the most. Unless i decide not to buy it at all, of course!

I usually like to wait a day or so. I do this to prevent impulsive shopping and end up wit stuff I won’t actually use..been there, done that…

Charlotte Avatar

It definitely depends on the price – if it’s affordable I’ll get it, and if not I’ll hold off to see if I still really want it like a month later.

Also I rarely buy anything I haven’t read reviews for!

I’m very impulsive and I always want everything new! At the moment I’m on a ban so I’m trying to wait until I finish a few items and then I can buy new things!

Mariella Avatar

I have so little willpower…it’s really hard for me to hold off buying something I really want. With some “novelty” products, I find that if I wait, the desire will pass, though.

Emma Avatar

I’m way too impulsive when it comes to buying make up, skincare, etc. If I see something that looks good and I have the money I don’t even wait to see reviews or swatches. It’s worse for stuff I can’t get in a store nearby and have to buy online because if I go into the store and swatch it I realise that it doesn’t suit me or that it’s very similar to something I already have. Unfortunately I buy most of my stuff online….I really need to have some self-control!

Rebecca Avatar

Assuming I’ll wear it and it’s not crazy expensive, it depends. If it’s something I know is going to be popular and it’s LE I’ll buy it, if it’s LE and I kinda like it I wait to see if it’s around later, if it’s permanent usually I wait until I am completely certain I love it.

Brenda Avatar

I swatch it, then try to do the 30 day rule. It usually backfires on me though and by the time I decide to purchase it, it’s gone 🙁

Vijaya Avatar

It depends on what it is. If it’s expensive, I may wait, but if it’s cheaper, I might just go for it. Sometimes, though, even if it’s cheaper, I wait for a sale.

Jessie Q Avatar

Products usually catch my eye online, so I read the review and look at the swatches. Then I’ll usually buy it if I’m in love with it.

Dana Avatar

I usually wait for swatches or some type of review. I try to wait as long as possible before buying any new makeup item (unless it’s some crazy hype LE product like Stereo Rose LOL.) Seeing as I have enough makeup for the next 10-20 years I try not to be impulsive.

Leticia Avatar

I am only really impulsive when it comes to limited edition makeup…in the case of MAC – if I wait, most probably the next time I’m able to go to the counter it will be gone!

stacey Avatar

I wait for a few days after swatching it and think about what does it add to the existing collection I have. Many products such as MAC or Philosphy just change the packaging design and rename it with the same product that is slightly different.

Jessi Avatar

If I can’t afford it I have this philosophy of “wait for it, and if it’s not there once you have the money it wasn’t meant to be” There is no such thing as a product I neeeed. So I try to put things in perspective and be more responsible.

Jan Avatar

I waited. But I waited too long and now it’s discontinued. It was Tarte Stain and Shine in Nectar – the perfect coral for my skintone.

Now, I might not wait anymore.

I don’t go shopping that often. I don’t have the time.

Niki Avatar

I actually don’t buy products on a whim for each item I add to makeup collection needs to have a purpose, so if I like something, I will wait and go back and if its not there, I will either 1) search the internet for the product or 2) accept that it was not meant to be and move on the next item on my Makeup Wants list.

condesa Avatar

depends on item! if it’s expensive, I go back home and check reviews and swatches etc.8 (..e like the Guerlain G blush Serie Noire or the Guerlain palettes as an example)
On the other hand if it’s affordable and I really love it, I impulse buy…(see latest Shiseido foundation, it was sssoooo gorgeous I could not help and buy it, it was love at first sight and I totally recommend it)
