Makeup & Beauty Tips on How to Organize Lipsticks

Share your best tips and tricks for organizing your lipsticks!  Share your best storage tips and how you keep everything within reach!

My Tips

  1. I like to pull out 5-10 of my favorite shades at the moment (it changes often and definitely can vary by the season!) and keep them separated out for easy access or for lazy days when I just want a go-to.
  2. Depending on how many lipsticks you have, sorting by color makes it easy to find the right shade to pair with a look you’re creating.  However…
  3. Organizing by brand usually means you can save space, as the same packaging always sits and slides together better than a bunch of varying-sized products.

Help! Has anyone found a good way to organize Guerlain Rouge G lipsticks and glosses? I can’t for the life of me find a way to make good use of space when sorting them…

For other lipsticks, I use a lipstick organizer like this:

It fits pretty much all lipsticks (except Burberry, I’ve found), and for pencils and glosses I use a small vase or candle holder.

I have mine standing in my makeup organizer, but that only works if I don’t touch anything around them – fat chance of that happening! It’s the only things I don’t like about them 🙂 But yes, they’re the only lipsticks i have to remember to swap out from my purse because of the weight!

I visually need to have the boxes lined up in my stash, but it isn’t the most user friendly method so I completely agree with your suggestion to store by colour. It makes more sense, but I just can’t make myself do it. I do pull out 5-10 lipsticks at a time which are current favs in heavy rotation. I’ll mix these up every couple of weeks.

I have one of those shoebox-sized containers with dividers. Inside, I store the lipsticks upside down, so the label shows and I do try to organize them by color – nudes, pinks, browns, reds, oranges.

For day to day use, I have about 15 that I carry around with me – I’m a lipstick fanatic, so one never knows when another shade is necessary. 😉

I do the same. I keep my 10 go-to shades of the season on my vanity. Keep the rest packed away. Right now I have a lot of light corals and pinks as well as some of my SPF packed tinted balms.

A shotgun shell is pretty much the same size as a MAC (and many other) lipstick and there’s a line of translucent shotgun shell boxes that are perfect for lippies. Each box holds 25 and I put the lipsticks in upside down so I can read the labels easily but store the box on its top so the lipsticks are right side up. I’ve got four boxes which hold all my lipsticks and it’s so easy to find the one I want to wear. I should go back and organize by color though; right now they’re pretty much in order purchased.

Mine are in a box upside down to see the labels with the brands grouped together. I like to keep them all out in the open so there’s a better chance they’ll get used. The MLBB shades are usually my first choice, but every so often I grab something with a little colour.

I also have an acrylic 24-lipstick holder
Another good idea is to reuse a 3-wick candle holder (cleaned out) from bath and body works and fit them inside upside down so you can see the labels)
With all their sales Over the years (and my general candle addiction) I have reused the jars for many things including a brush holder, eyeliners etc

Thank goodness I have a drawer where lipsticks can be placed vertically in a clear, plastic storage bin with just a 1/4 in or so to spare.
This allows me to put in approximately 24 lipsticks straight up so the label can be ready, another 12 glosses in a tray on the side (most of these are too high to go in vertically) and another 8 or so in a slightly smaller tray. However, I don’t have near that many loose lip products. I have two palettes and a combined total of no more than 20 loose lipsticks and lipglosses. Anything old or not used regularly gets tossed.
The vertical items are arranged by color.

I buy the 3-in-1 cotton travel sets from the dollar store. These- http://www.dollartree.com/3-in-1-Cotton-Travel-Sets/p168066/index.pro?method=search

I empty them and cut the flip top lids off. Then organize everything by brand, then product, then color family. For example, all the Revlon Superlustrous lipsticks in the red family are together, etc.

I like to line them up in a plastic bin like this- http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-3-Gallon-12-Quart-Storage-Box-White-Set-of-15/15442439?findingMethod=rr .

I cut the lids off so I can store my lip glosses and taller lipstick bullets. But you could leave the lids to store or for easy travel.

I got these clear acrylic organizer trays from ebay, they were super cheap! I think they hold 24 lippies. I then organize by brand within the trays. You could put them in deeper drawers too so they still stand up but are out of sight.

I just recently bought a little basket made out of recycled paper. It’s got three compartments, but I bought it because it holds basically all of my lip products. I managed to get all my Urban Decay lipsticks in there, seated label-side up. It works because I could fill the compartment.

It’s also incentive to stop buying lip products because I have a basket full now.

It’s so hard to organize…JUST TOO MANY LIPSTICKS!!!!!

even I sorted them according shades or brands.,,IT IS SO DIFFICULT TO MANAGE THEM.
When I was hurry in the morning and suddenly wanted to find a lippie (always,oouch..)
I always mess them up…
…..Women Change like Weather.

I will also put some of my favorites at that time (around 10lippies) out of my lipstick Huge box..for a easy go-to..

My lipsticks are arranged by color in a clear acrylic organizer that is called muji. The ones I use the most are on the side in a separate open clear container and I rotate those out about every week or two weeks.
