How do you decide what perfume to wear?

I’ve been trying to rotate through more, so I have about 20 or so in my closet to make it easy to reach for a fragrance. I tend to go by whether I want something sweeter, heavier, etc. for the day.

It mostly depends on my mood. I keep my fragrances on a decorative mirrored tray on the dresser because I love how the bottles look. There are 18 on the tray. I use whichever one strikes my fancy that day, though sometimes I match my perfume to what I’m wearing.

I don’t have a big arsenal of fragrances. I will wear one fragrance for years until I find something new that I love. I’ve been wearing Marc Jacobs Daisy original for years and it’s still my absolute favorite, along with the shimmering body lotion, which is getting harder to find. I wear it year-round. I just discovered Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet and I LOVED it from the first time I tried it, so it’s on my Christmas wish list and I’m pretty sure my husband already bought it for me lol. I will still wear Daisy because it has become my signature scent and I get so many compliments when I wear it and people ask me what I’m wearing. I have no problem telling them because it’s such a beautiful scent and I think others should be able to enjoy it also. I hate it when you ask someone what they’re wearing and they won’t tell you what it is lol….it’s ridiculous. So, yeah….now I have two favorite scents. 🙂

As I’m so discriminating when it comes to what I love to wear as a fragrance combined with financial constraints, I have under 10 bottles of full-size fragrances along with a few rather large rollerball ones. Each time I pick out one to wear, I keep mindful of venue and how toasty it will likely be out there (at least most of the year, it feels like!). Another guiding force, possibly the most likely to influence my decision, has got to be my mood/mind frame.

I take a visual or imaginative “walk” through my collection to see what stands out most for me about a possible “match” between the day or evening ahead, any current fragrance “note” obsessions. If I’m going out of the house, I try to imagine how my scent candidates would be perceived by specific people whom I know I’ll see as well as other people in general. Then I narrow it down to one fragrance by using the same considerations.

I make a selection of perfumes for summer and another for winter. They are displayed next to my dresser. After I get dressed, I look at them and their scent just comes to mind. The winner is whichever matches my clothes, mood or who I want to be that day. For instance if I’m wearing a fluffy sweater and it’s cold outside I don’t see myself wearing a fresh perfume, but a powdery or sweet one seems perfect.
