Ambient Lighting Infinity Powder, $50.00 (New, Permanent)

Editor’s Note: Hourglass only lists the product standalone with no shade name, so there only appears to be one “shade.” I assumed it was a translucent product (as finishing powders tend to me) and that was why it was one shade, but they actually say it is “Ideal for light to medium skin tones,” which is frustrating as a lack of offerings for deeper complexions has been a long-running issue with Hourglass. It is a bit odd, though, because the Infinity powder contains two of the “acclaimed” Ambient Powders (which are described as “universal”) and one Strobe Ambient Lighting Powder (also described as “universal”) but doesn’t detail which three.

Use this finishing powder as the last step in your complexion routine (after foundation, concealer and setting powder). Dust over the entire face using the Ambient Powder Brush. Can be worn alone or layered with other products in the Ambient Lighting collection to create custom shades.

Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara, $29.00 (New, Permanent)

The look of lash extensions in an instant. This mascara is the ultimate formula for when more is more: more definition, more lift and more length to transform lashes with impossibly real results. Using film-forming technology, it coats each lash in lightweight fibers that lock in place for a high-impact, fanned-out finish and smudge-proof wear.

How could they just put out 1 shade of this product, say it’s ideal for light/medium skin tones, and call it a day ??‍♀️

Honestly, the audacity of releasing this one shade on the heels of talking about ‘taking first steps’ is cringeworthy. I just checked their social media and this powder is nowhere to be found in their posts—suggesting they dimly recognized it’d get roasted but quietly released it on their site anyway. Did they think it would go unnoticed?

Christine Avatar

It’ll be interesting to see if they do post on social about it – I think an email went out just today about early access for newsletter subscribers, so I don’t know if they’re waiting to post or are specifically not posting about it… though I don’t see any teasers for it, which you think they would have. Now, I’ll be curious to see if they post and if they get comments about it!

Lauren Avatar

Yes, it will be interesting. I saw what looked like teasers for their mascara, but nothing about the powder. I just saw your added note about the powders comprising this product. Definitely odd, as you say, for a product comprised of powders touted as “universal” to then be described as intended for light/medium skin. I’ve never tried Hourglass pressed finishing/lighting powders so I am unfamiliar with their formula and its claims. I appreciate your knowledge and thoroughness, as always!

Aside from the completely tone-deaf copy/single shade, this seems kinda pointless to me. I use Ambient Lighting Powder almost every time I do my makeup, and I also use the highlighters fairly often, but I never thought “omg let’s just combine this into one sparkly step.” I am sure they’re gonna rightly catch hell for this all over the Internet, so hopefully they listen.

Maybe it is just me, but I feel like the luxury tier is the one struggling with inclusivity, which really speaks volumes.

This is so disappointing to me. I really hope enough people take Hourglass to ask about the blatant lack of inclusivity that they make expanding shades of this product a top priority.
That said, this powder also just seems redundant to me. Why can’t they clearly articulate what differentiates THIS expensive glowy powder from their numerous others?

Typical Hourglass is always leaving out us deeper complexed folks. There’s no excuse for a company that large to not offer products for a wider range of skin tones. If they don’t start offering a more diverse range of products that suit a more skin tones, I’m not going to buy their products anymore.

I’ve had a fair amount of contempt for this company for years and have basically boycotted them. Now, while this powder sounds nice and like it might be something that would work for me, they’ve just managed to confirm to me the low opinion I’ve carried around for quite some time.

Stick in the instant thermometer. I think this turkey is done. Copy is usually puffery, often pretentious, but Hourglass has reached a new nadir. Contradicts itself. Pretends to be inclusive, then (Gilda Radner voice) ‘Nevermind!’ Ulta-creative of them to mix together their iconic products. Addressing the unequal marbling with the ‘miscelare’ technique. Pompous. That’s probably the regular method that Italian made marbled product is made. Pretty gagworthy. There are so many reasons to roast this high end turkey.

So disappointing. Their Caution mascara is my absolute favorite, but I haven’t repurchased because Hourglass has been so actively horrible with inclusivity. In the current climate, this seems like a willful micro aggression. Definitely boycotting.

I was really intrigued by this—and I wanted to know what the two ambient lighting powders and which strobe powder it was made of… I saw a review on YouTube and one commentator wrote that they had reached out to Hourglass customer service and it’s actually a mix of dim light, diffused light, and hypnotic strobe light.
I think I’m probably going to pass… also it’s weird that it’s only suitable for light to light medium when the ambient lighting powders are generally touted as universal..
I guess maybe the ratio of diffused light and the strobe?
