Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary Ruby Compact Mirror Review & Photos
Hello Kitty Ruby Compact Mirror
Hello Kitty Ruby Compact Mirror ($49.00) is described as a “Hello Kitty-shaped compact mirror” that’s supposed to have 300 “hand-placed jewels.” For a serious collector who is less concerned about quality or durability, it might still be nice to have on a desk or vanity, but with as much Hello Kitty merchandise out there, I would be surprised if there wasn’t something that was really dazzling to be had. (Or even DIY one!) This just doesn’t have much sparkle–it looks dull–they almost look like clear crystals, even in person. The exposed edges of the mirror scratched really easily, so I don’t think I would keep it in a bag unless you found a pouch for it. It is lightweight with a thin feel–I’m not even sure it is metal. The hinges are a bit stiff, but it doesn’t readily open in a makeup bag or purse. The red paint on the bow arrived partially chipped on the side, and there were a few scratches on the interior upon arrival. It doesn’t feel like a luxury compact, and the real lack of shift and sparkle with the “jewels” is so disappointing.

I’m not a massive Hello Kitty fan but this is quite cute. I wouldn’t buy it though.
I wish it was better quality — or way less expensive.
Yeah. I have a beautiful enameled mirror that I bought about 8 years ago. It’s survived being dropped on to tiles, being bashed about in my bag, etc. It’s taken everything I’ve thrown at it, including being thrown about! It cost me £10 and it’s been worth every penny. 🙂
Hello Kitty fans seem so fervent. They deserve better merchandise than this collection has been offering. It’s not my thing, but if I were a collector, I’d feel gouged.
They definitely do!!
Cute!!
I wish it sparkled more!
I consider myself a Hello Kitty enthusiast but this mirror is so cheap-looking and not worth 49$
I’ll pass.
Cute idea, poor execution!
I have this exact same mirror (without the jewels) I got mine from sephora and it was on sale so I paid 5 bucks. The edges are already scratched as you said :S
$5 for the silver compact, totally worth it 😉
Cute. But I agree, it looks a bit cheap.
Nowhere near $49 worth!
I remember seeing this in store and being underwhelmed – I’d hoped the light would be bouncing around like crazy, but it’s more disappointing still seeing just how fragile it is. How did it already lose so many of the jewels?
The price point for this thing is nuts. Plastic and cheapest of cheap crystals? What a waste of money!
I don’t think mine have any lost jewels – the areas where there aren’t any on the front are for whiskers 🙂
Wow. Couldn’t tell those were whiskers!
I wish they’ve a jewels on an eyes, nose, whiskers maybe it make a compact look more pricey than this.It doesn’t look durable for me to have in my makeup bag.
I worry about it being durable, since it was so prone to scratching.
So sad to see the quality is lacking for a $50 product. Otherwise, I would have been ready to splurge on this… it’s just SO cute! Oh well, more $$$ for makeup!
Phew!
They use cheaper rhinestones on this one.
I still have my flat mirror that this size made with swarovski crystals and it really pops from when Sephora launched the Hello Kitty line!
Yes, I immediately was concerned when I read the listing and they said JEWELS not Swarovski!
What’s really sad is that the Hello Kitty Bling Mirror was about $60US back then. I know it labour priced but if the swarovski crystals are worth only $15 more why not got for it this time for the anniversary! 😉
Right? Would rather have it actually SPARKLE, and at $49, it’s already a luxury product.
oh no! you purchased this? yikes…
Yep, total waste of $50!
Yeah I know you had been sent some of them for review so i assumed that was the case when i saw this, I guess you do purchase some misses when you review as much makeup as you do though!
I could live with the crystals being dull if this wasn’t so dang pricey. I drooled over the handheld one the second I saw it but the price is a turnoff. Especially since the quality isn’t that good. For that kind of money, I want to be blinded every time I pull it out lol. I have a good feeling both will be on sale after the holidays.
LOL! You won’t even need sunglasses for this!
Not a Hello Kitty fan myself, either, but I have a friend who would faint over this. I have to admit it is very cute and girly and sparkly. 😉
I wish it was more sparkly!
I LOVE LOVE Hello Kitty, but have been so disappointed by some of their Sephora products – outrageously expensive and poor quality. Such a beloved icon deserves so much better, especially for 40th anniversary. The picture is so cute, but when I saw the compact mirror in the stores, there was very little sparkle, and it felt poorly made :(. If they made it better quality and more sparkly, I would pay $50 just to have it on my vanity, because it’s so cute. I know they can do it, because I have a Hello Kitty necklace with Swarovski crystals, and it’s very sparkly. The only thing I’ve liked and bought so far is their 40th anniversary Pop Eye Party Eyeshadow kit, I love it, but everything else is disappointing.
I was really surprised at how lackluster the jewels are – there are certainly a lot of them – but they just don’t dazzle or sparkle at all.
I think cute mirrors are a lot of fun, but this poor thing! Hello Kitty is worth more, and should sparkle if there are any kinds of jewels involved.
When I was in Tokyo some years ago I found a Hello Kitty counter at a department store. I suppose thar could be many of those, but still. They had so much fun stuff there, among it all was an evening handbag made of, it must have been Swarowski stones. It was really nice and very sparkly.
They also had a bicycle,
It was an experience to see that counter, at least for me.
If anyone had the original compact from before (just silver), they could DIY this and make it look WAY better!!
such a shame. I wish most companies would put better quality out when they decide to charge steep prices & have collectable or anniversary items.
Agreed!!
Wow – that company really takes advantage of their customers! Made in China of cheap materials, and they expect $49.00? That’s ridiculous!
It really should sparkle more (Swarvoski or not) for the price point.
It looks like it’s missing some rhinestones…
That is where the “whiskers” are 🙂
I thought these were swarovski crystals. When I went to pick one up because I collect compacts I was soooo disappointed in the quality. They are cheap plastic facets with no sparkle at all 🙁 a real downer 🙁
Nope, definitely not 🙁
