Guerlain Rue de Passy Eyeshadow Palette

Guerlain Rue de Passy Eyeshadow Palette ($84.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a rather neutral collection of shades. It includes: a soft pale neutral beige with a matte finish; light-medium cool-toned beige with taupe in a matte finish; iridescent pale pink with a metallic sheen; blackened burgundy brown with a satin finish; cool-toned brown with a satin finish; and a deep black-brown. This is like a cool-toned version of Rue de Francs Bourgeois, which was a palette of warmer-toned neutrals.

As much as I liked Guerlain’s spring palette (Rue de Rivoli), I really wasn’t impressed with this one. Two of the shades (the blackened burgundy brown and cool-toned brown) were very sheer, even when layered. I just couldn’t get the pay off that I’d like to–they were sheer and didn’t seem to lay down as seamlessly as other Guerlain eyeshadows have. I think the swatches do a nice job of showing where these went awry.

  • Product: 23/30
  • Value: 7/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 5/5

FINAL THOUGHTS: I like the color combination, and I think it would suit light to medium skin tones with cooler undertones. However, the quality is poor in two of five shades, so I wouldn’t recommend this as a go-to neutral palette.

compact and shades are pretty but $84 is ridiculous for a tiny shadow palette. I’d never spend that kind of money when there are so many beautiful options that are much less expensive. I’d rather buy something less expensive & donate the difference to a charity.

I am a big eye-shadow lover! Have plenty of them and always looking for more. Since I bought this palette in November I never used any of my eyeshadow anymore. It is my all time favorite! Colors look so elegant. Cool-nude. And I cannot blame the quality. It is way better than Chanel or Dior for me. I am sorry that you didn’t like it..

I wonder how some people keep their jobs. I am assuming it was tested before manufacturing, and who thought it was a good idea to release a pricey palette of mediocre shadows from a high end brand?

Eileen Avatar

Wow! That’s harsh! Have you actually tried any of the palettes? The shadows are silky smooth and apply beautifully. They can be worn alone or layered à la Le Métier de Beauté’s shadows. They wear well throughout the day without creasing or fading (I use Kanebo Sensai eyelid base). What these shadows do lack is a strong color presence, but then these were designed with the older women in mind or for the younger women who likes a more subtle color statement. Since Guerlain opted to introduce another palette of this design in the spring collection, the concept has obviously been successful. I don’t think anyone has to worry about losing a job.

I have several of the Guerlain palettes and this was my first and still favourite. I’m pale with distinct yellow undertones and green eyes and I usually choose warmer colours but this one is much more flattering on me than Francs-Bourgeois. That one is very orange on me. They are stupid expensive, but I received them as gifts. I’ve tried all of them and my other faves are Rue de Sevres, which I didn’t think I would like, and Champs-Elysees which they are calling the “universal” palette. I get a nice colour payoff, but again, I’m quite pale and I usually prefer a wash of colour though I found these easy to build if I want something darker. Also, the horizontal colour at the bottom of the palette is VERY close to the taupe in the Chantecaille Tiger palette which I LOVE.

Similar to you, Julia, I’m quite fair with soft peach undertones and dark moss green eyes. I get plenty of color from this palette as well as the others I have in my collection. On my skin, the shadows have an over all tone that is rose beige with a subtle opalescent glow that is perfect for day time wear. The soft rose tones are very flattering to my eye color.

I find the colors in the palette are silky smooth, easy to blend or layer, wear well throughout the day, and stay color true. Since I use 5 or 6 of the colors every time I reach for one of these palettes, they are actually a bargain at what works out to be $14 a shadow.

Guerlain does not market their products to teenagers or younger women who might want to make a bold or more colorful statement. Guerlain targets more mature women who like color but find a softer version of it to be better suited to their professional appearance or to their age.

totally agreed! although i am in my early twenties, i am not into super pigmented shadows but rather attracted by guerlain’s elegant presentation and texture 🙂

I purchased this palette and was somewhat skeptical, as I am not usually a “neutrals” person. I have green eyes and usually work the purple tones; however, I was super impressed with this palette. It works great on my skin tone (very pale) and sets off my eyes well without too dark of an application. Of course, this is very expensive, mostly due to the packaging! I would recommend this palette: it’s certainly not cheap, but has become my go to for daytime (over the UD Naked palette). My recommendation: try it on at the counter and see if it actually works for you.

Too bad the quality was poor, I really like the colors. By the way, do you think you could make a comparison between Zoya Dove and China Glaze Pelican Gray?

Dini Avatar

Thanks for putting the dupes in the FAQ. I really like the look of these colors together, but disappointed with the product, especially at such a steep price. Thanks for being one step ahead, as usual!

I bought this and looked at it and looked at it. I just couldn’t decide whether or not to use it. I finally returned it unused. I wasn’t sure about my decision but this post convinced me that I did the right thing.

i really wanted to get this palette but i wasn’t so sure, now im sure im not getting it… thank you for reviewing this!!!! i love your blog!

BeckBeck Avatar

I actually really liked this palette myself, but I tend to keep my eye looks on the lighter side. I’m fair (NW10ish, though my undertones are more neutral than cool) and this palette is way easier to wear for me than UD Naked, for example. I also bought it during the Sephora 20% code so it was a little more reasonably priced.

Ringo Avatar

Contrary to the review, this is actually the first Ecrin palette that I got and I immediately fell in love with it…the colors lean towards matte but the effect was extremely sultry and feminine…That’s when I started collecting all the Ecrin palette lol

Quinctia Avatar

It’s a bit underwhelming…I think they missed out on having a little more variance going from dark to light. Aside from the black, there are three shades at the same lightness level, and the two others at the same. One of the two leftmost shades could’ve been swapped out for a medium-to-silver gray, or perhaps a pinker brown or mauve.

The two darker (non-black) colors swatched very patchy. I really don’t think it’s a matter of youthfulness or classiness, it just seems like they could’ve tried harder since it is a brand like Guerlain.

joolz Avatar

So far, this is the only one I have of the ecrin palettes and I love it! I did not think I would like it either, like many, but it is so easy to put on my make up for work. At the moment, I’m NC25-30 in this harsh winter season. The MA at Saks placed the colors on me and I was hooked immediately. I’m getting another soon!

Hilana Avatar

On me these are the most unflattering colours I could ever choose to wear. I have similar colours in my collection and I let my niece play with them.
And at that price?
Really……

Such a let down when expensive high-end companies like these disappoint, isn’t it?

mylinda Avatar

I’ve actually found that this palette is my favorite among the Guerlain palettes released last fall. I got mine with the 20% off code from Sephora so it helped with the price tag. I thought that the pigmentation or lack thereof, was perfect for what this palette achieves, and that is a neutral eye that can be worn daily and is office-appropriate. I would take this palette over Urban Decay’s Naked Palette on any day.

Christine Avatar

If some of the colors weren’t patchy, it wouldn’t have been a problem, but I found the quality to be missing in a few shades myself. I appreciate soft, light, or washes of color – but the quality still has to be there. I’m glad it worked well for you, though!

Modesty Brown Avatar

I have this and I would completely agree with you on the mixed quality of the eyeshadows. I was very disappointed the first time I tried to do a darker eye look. However, despite my initial disappointment I do actually use this a lot. It’s very nice for a simple neutral eye. It’s certainly not as versatile as something like the Naked palette but I’ve learned to love it in the end!

I am fair with cool skin tone and this palette is perfect for me, I couldnt be happier with my purchase. I bought it even after reading all the negative reviews about chalkiness and lack of colour and thankfully found none of that to be true. Its not a palette for someone who wants intense colour and high shimmer but that should be obvious by looking at it. Ive never had any luck with nude eyeshadows before and now I know why, I needed several co-ordinating, tone on tone shades to acheive the look I wanted. This palette has taught me that. I am very impressed with how easy this is to blend, apply and create many diverse looks. I can create evything from barely there natural looks to a deep smokey eye with this palette and its perfect everytime. It was by far one of my best value for money purchases. I recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile, go with everything palette. The only caveat is that it will best on you if you have cool skin tone as it has noticable purple undertones.

I have this eye shadows and they are one of my fav palette. I dont know why u did not like them, but i think its amazing quality ( and i can compare to all lux n prof brands). They are kind of matte if to compare to Chanel. Amazing eye shadows. u can have day look and change into night in a min. I would suggest this palette to everyone (with a cool tone, like i am). its gorgeus and make u look awesome.
regarding money i would say it like this. If u can spend 84 dollars on eyeshadow palette than go for it cuz this one totally worth it (quality wise n colors). If its quite expensive for u than buy something cheaper, i also like Nars eye shadows, Shu uemura, Chanel and Giorgio Armani.
