Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: Haus Labs eyeliners + six cream pigments, Oriza Legrand Empire des Indes perfume.

Weekend plans: My family is coming over for Father’s Day on Sunday. We’re going to order a mega-sized pizza, per my dad’s request, and watch a movie.

What’s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you? Front and backyard landscaping/remodeling – I never thought I would do it or spend as much as we did, but it really has brought an exceptional amount of joy on a daily basis now.

Recent Purchases: I’m on a fragrance kick. I bought travel size versions of The 7 Virtues Vanilla Woods, Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace, and Armani My Way. Plus, I bought a full size Carolina Herrera Good Girl. I ignored this fragrance for a long time because I was put off by the shoe-bottle, but I recently saw a listing of the perfume notes and knew I had to have it. (And now that I have it, I kind of like the shoe-bottle.) I recently got a sample of the post-L’Oreal reformulated Mugler Alien and compared it to the original version, which I am running out of. It’s very disappointing. Smells watered down and lacks the warmth and depth of the original. So that makes two of my favorites that no longer exist (Nirvana Black is the other).

Rediscoveries: Guerlain Meteorites, Dior Hologlam blush, and Chanel Pirate lipstick. I haven’t had a reason to wear glamorous makeup since pre-pandemic days, but I went to an event this past weekend, so I pulled out my favorite glamorous products. (Pirate is truly the best red lipstick ever!)

Weekend plans: Baking a cake for my dad, who I’ll visit on Sunday.

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might, but was totally worth it to you? A pair of booties. Specifically, Lucchese short cowboy boots. They’re gorgeous and totally worth it.

(P.S. If you don’t mind me asking, what happened to the Wednesday and Saturday surveys? I haven’t seen them in a while and I miss them!)

Seraphine Avatar

One of the best parts was getting to know the Temptalia members through these surveys. We are a diverse group of makeup lovers, and I loved reading all the different opinions.

Genevieve Avatar

It is so worth it to have some splurge worthy products to wear to an event – and it would have made you feel totally luxe to have them on. Chanel’s Pirate lipstick is the best.
Happy Father’s Day to your dad and I am sure he will love your cake.
I just love ankle boots myself – I am not so much a ‘shoe’ person, but I really adore ankle boots – I have them in quite a few different autumn shades and now I am looking for a burgundy pair…I can understand how much you love your new ones.

And yes, I do miss the Wednesday and Saturday surveys as well.

Seraphine Avatar

There are so many great things about Chanel Pirate…the color, the formula, the packaging, and even the name!

I hope Christine brings those surveys back. They’re fun, and I love the Temptalia community interaction.

Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: Nothing new cosmetic wise.

Weekend plans: Finish leftover errands and spend some time outdoors.

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you? Food. Even if times weren’t the best when I grew up (early 90s Eastern Europe wasn’t the best stocked market), I grew up with the mentality that nutrition is worth investing in. Off course, my mindset behind that changed and evolved (I was overweight until my mod 20s), but I have no regrets in being spendy with food.
For me it’s be matter of having the best quality ingredients (which imparts flavor), the most nutritious ingredients (avoiding crappy processed food) and care for the environment and animals (I choose organic crops when I know non-organic hurts the land and farmers, I choose meat from humanely raised beef, eggs from pasture raised chicken, products from farms that have sustainable land practices etc.). I’ll never be a vegetarian, it’s not my vibe; but I hate supporting with my money companies that treat animals poorly.
And it’s not just a money investment, it took time and energy to educate myself and identify good sources for my food. It takes a lot to look behind both companies that use marketing to hide the truth and the people that demonize unjustifiable entire food groups.

Genevieve Avatar

Well said Ana Maria re choosing wisely your food. Some of the diets out there in the marketplace do ignore whole food groups and those who follow them religiously can be at risk of missing vital minerals and vitamins…unless you are actually allergic or intolerant to those products – like dairy.

Celesta Avatar

Recent Purchases: Klarity Cosmetics Evil Mermaid palette, a couple of the glowy blushes from the Oden’s Eye new Solmane release, a few single shadows that i’ve had my eye on, and a few pieces from Universal Standard… they’re expensive, but the quality is there and they are very curvy-girl friendly, which I love.

Rediscoveries: My ND Retro palette. I don’t use it enough and its absolutely stunning. And it makes my eyes look SO green.

Weekend plans: We are finally all fully healthy! My mother in law is coming over on Saturday and I think we’ll spend some time outside on Sunday for Father’s Day.

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you? New hardwood floors on the first floor of our house. Absolutely worth it; we love them and they elevate the look of the house SO much.

Genevieve Avatar

I just looked up Universal Standard – a clothing retailer I had never heard of before and they do look to have a wide range of elegant, monotone kind of clothes that would suit a variety of people. I loathe tops myself that are overly frilly, overly revealing and have a mish mash of competing colour shades. The prices are right for the sort of tailoring in these outfits. I think they are a ‘good buy’. I hope you enjoy what you have purchased Celesta. It’s really hard to get something you like. I am an Aus size 18 (16 in US) in the top and a size 16 in pants – so I do find it tricky myself.
Thank goodness you are all finally well – it has taken awhile and all of you were so sick, especially your son. I hope your husband enjoys his Father’s Day with his mum and all of you together.
Hardwood floors are just beautiful and I think they would make your house look stunning. When our carpet finally goes to God (it really has already, but we are waiting for our grandchildren to grow up a bit more) we are investigating getting hardwood floors too. My husband is not a fan of them, but I think they are pretty different to the ones he grew up with 65-70 years ago…

Swoozy Avatar

Recent purchase: I’m trying to be on a low buy as I have a ton of things to work through, but Liberty had a sale and I purchased the large sized Sisley shampoo and conditioner. With the sale and better European prices, it is almost 30% cheaper than US list price.

Weekend plans: weeding and relaxing. We did a lot last weekend and I want to just putter about on my own time this weekend.

Things I spend more on than people might think is sane: Based on my first answer, haircare – I have coarse, wavy, thick hair and modern styling products that make it soft are just a wonder to me. Totally worth it. I’m also not a clothes horse, but I will spend more money on nice work clothes because I keep them for years and I like nice fabrics.

Genevieve Avatar

I think any product that makes your life easier is totally work it – especially your hair – that you have to deal with on a daily basis. And having the right products help you to manage your hair better and instead of it being a chore – it becomes a joy.
I always invested in good work clothes too because I wanted them to last (and they have) and having beautiful, comfortable fabrics is important. That’s why I never buy clothes online – apart from needing to see how they look on me, I like to feel the fabric.
Enjoy your weekend Swoozy and I hope you get to potter around at your own pace.

Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: no buy is ongoing. My main rediscovery this week was Valentino Voce Viva perfume. It is so good in warmer weather.

Weekend plans: my best friend is coming down from Portland and I get to meet his partner for the first time!! I am very excited.

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you? I am pretty thrifty most of the time, but I will always invest in quality electronics whenever possible.

Nancy T Avatar

Those pictures are totally and truly PRECIOUS! This is something that I ought to do, and want to do for Scunci and Pookie one day soon.

Purchases/rediscoveries: Nothing purchased, but I did rediscover certain favorite eyeshadows from some specific palettes! Like: CP Perfection from Like A Virgo and Hello Happy from Botanic Panic. Hadn’t used either shade in quite some time.

Weekend plans: Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have to get my official certificate of divorce because Social Security is demanding it from me. The catch? It’s online application with a fee, and I don’t have a computer or a printer here, plus, right now stone cold broke! And I MUST get it to them within 30 days. I’ve just about had enough of this life.

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you? Definitely makeup, nail polish and skincare! Oh, and 23 years ago, a $600 custom nameplate necklace with 20 little diamonds in it. Wore it for 22 plus years until one of the gold holes on the actual plate broke and now I need to get it soldered at a Fast Fix in order to wear it again.

Genevieve Avatar

Nancy, are you able to go into a Social Security office (or branch) and explain your situation? We have a dedicated registry of Births, Deaths, Marriages in our city centre and that’s another place we can go to to get that kind of information too.
It is annoying when every single, little thing is online and there are lots of people who don’t have a computer, or a sophisticated one that will take all the passwords requited here in Aus either. Sometimes the local library has computers/printers that you can use too.
Best of luck.

Nancy T Avatar

I called their main 1-800 number, spoke with a VERY compassionate, helpful associate who gave me some extra time to get the divorce certificate which involves dealing with a different state across the country. Also, a trusted friend let me know that I can use her computer and copier to get that document sent to me here. I do not believe that anyone ought to have to pay money for birth certificates, death certificates, divorce/marriage certificates, etc. What a racket this is!

Mariella Avatar

Recent purchases – I received my order of cleanser from Glossier (this was a big deal to me as I don’t like ordering anything new to me online); Iconic London Prep Set Glow Hydrating Mist (the lighter of the 2 shades) – it is REALLY nice. I also got The Ordinary 10% Lactic Acid + 2% HA serum – hard to believe something so nice and seemingly effective (I’ve only used it a few days) can be so inexpensive. I also got some more yoga crops. I pretty much live in them because I spend a fair bit of time at the gym and because I never quite know what I’m going to be doing on many of my teaching assignments.

Weekend plans: Fathers’ Day on Sunday – trying to arrange calls from our 2 boys (both quite far distant and in very different time zones) and going to lunch or brunch on Sunday with my daughter and her husband.

What have I spent a lot on (besides makeup??? I think many of us here spend more on that stuff than people in the “general public”) – it’s probably the baby stroller we bought for our grand-daughter who is arriving in a few weeks.

Genevieve Avatar

Yep, a baby stoller is going to be expensive, but so, so totally worth it. And your daughter is having a little girl!!! How wonderful. Not long to go now…I hope the heat isn’t getting to your daughter too much either.
Happy Father’s Day to your husband and to the dad -to -be too.

Rachel R. Avatar

RECENT PURCHASES: (Nordstrom price match) Dior 5 Couplers in Red Tartan and Black Bow, Gucci Bloom, UD Grind house sharpener.

WEEKEND PLANS: We’ll take my husband out for Father’s Day, but we’ve got no concrete plans. (His fault! Lol)

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU SPENT MORE ON THAN OTHERS MIGHT BUT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT TO YOU?
Besides makeup? I suppose my piercings and tattoos. They make me look how I feel on the inside.

Mary Avatar

Those photos are so cuteโ€ฆand happy to hear your โ€œdoggy daddyโ€ hubby bonded with adorable Winnieโ€ฆ
Recent purchases ? Waiting for a shipment of some new Inika products ,
and an Ere Perez beet root lip and cheek tint.
Something I would spend more on than others might but is totally worth it ?
This is probably not unique but bed sheets and my organic wool mattress topper โ€ฆI love good bed sheets and will happily spend the money on them , also
discovered the organic wool bed topper.
It regulates temperature as it was explained to me thatโ€™s why fishermen wear wool all year round ..
cooler in summer and if I get up in the middle of the night stays warm .
and feels like Iโ€™m sleeping on a cloud .

Deborah S. Avatar

They are beautiful photos, Christine. I am happy your husband has bonded with Winnie. We should all have unconditional love in our lives.

Haul: Nothing this week and likely nothing for quite awhile. I am home bound with my mother.

Weekend plans: More of the same. I am still staying at my house but going to my brother’s to help in the care of my mother post her stroke. She has progressed to the point where she doesn’t want to do anything she is suppose to and thinks that she is better than she is. She came home from the hospital being in a really cheerful mood and actually almost euphoric but it didn’t last! We are doing physical, occupational and speech therapy. She has multiple Doctor appts. which most require travelling 3 hours each way so that alone keeps us busy. My plans to move have been put on hold as it isn’t fair to leave my brother to handle everything alone. When things settle down I may pursue selling and converting a basement room at my brother’s into a space for myself and then also live in Seattle part of the time. Too much going on to think about it right now though.

One thing I am willing to pay more for than most would? Undoubtedly it is craft and hobby supplies. I have ordered chipboard from Ukraine, rice paper from Romania, origami paper from France and Japan, and even cards from Australia, thanks Genevieve!! Most people would balk at the cost of the supplies without even dealing with the cost of mailing! When you live in the woods and have long winters, you have to have things to pass your time. I read a ton but it doesn’t answer my creative needs.
I do have to share two other quick stories, one of which I have shared on the blog before. When I was first out of nursing school and making good money, I decided to invest in a bottle of Joy perfume. I went to a newly opened mall in Reno, Nevada which is where my parents lived at the time. I purchased my bottle and went home. The next day I tried to use it but couldn’t get the cap off. My mom went with me to return it and when I gave it to the sales associate she told me that they had inadvertently given me a display bottle which didn’t actually open. She said, “You don’t want to pay *** for a bottle of perfume and not be able to use it!” My mother looked at me and said, “You paid what for a bottle of perfume?!” she couldn’t wait to get home and tell my father. My family relate this story whenever money comes up. It was in 1978!!
A similar experience with a pair of heals I purchased at I Magnin back when it was still operating. I purchased a pair of opaline snakeskin heels. They perfectly matched a dress I had purchased at I Magnin also. Again it was 1878 and I think I paid almost $600 for them. Another tale my family mentions a lot.
Oh, one more!!! I was visiting my grandmother in Montana and she, my uncle and I were headed to visit an aunt. When we pulled into their yard, my uncle was getting ready to take a load of garbage to the dump. My grandmother got up in the back of his truck and started pulling stuff out and putting it into the back of her car. I was sitting in the back seat and had my newly purchased, red silk jacket over the back seat. After she through some things in I asked her to be careful. After stuffing more stuff in, I was annoyed and told her that my jacket cost more than her car and the junk she was loading put together. I had to apologize later but when she relayed the story to my parents, I again knew I was going to be teased mercilessly.

What beautiful photos of your beloved doggies – Mellan and Winnie. The pictures capture the essence of their respective personalities so well. No wonder you teared up when you saw it Christine. They are lovely.

Recent Purchases: I have finally purchased a lip gloss! Don’t fall over in shock – it is Anastasia’s Parfait – a metallic rose gold shade that I continually looked at and love the colour.
Rediscoveries: Now that it is quite the winter weather here, I have been using my bareMinerals Soft and Smokey palette quite a bit lately – especially the shade of Eureka – a beautiful olive shade.

Weekend Plans. On Friday I went to get my hair cut and coloured and went out for dinner at our favourite Italian restaurant. A good start to the weekend.
Today (Saturday) I am going out for a drive to a seaside town to have a browse around and a chance to see the coastal countryside.
Sunday will be just housework……

Spent More Money on One Thing – I can understand Christine why remodelling your front and backyard has provided you with a lot of joy and comfort – some time ago we added a very large pergola in our side courtyard area and that has been a godsend because we can utilise the area in all kinds of weather. Our grandchildren have particularly loved it as an extra area to play in even if it is a bit wet.
We have recently spent extra money on our new kitchen appliances – oven, cooktop and rangehood fan and that is so totally worth it as I seem to spend a lot of my life cooking. The double oven means that I can cook the roast vegies at one temperature and the roast meat at a lower temp in the second oven. So both upgrades have been worth it to us.

Mariella Avatar

I am SO envious of the Soft and Smoky palette. It was never available here in Canada – at least not at Sephora, which is pretty much the only place I can get BareMinerals. I saw it here at Temptalia and thought “that’s just the sort of thing for me” but I was never able to get it. BAH!!!

Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: Oden’s Eye Solmane II blusher!

Weekend plans: Grilling Sunday. No father around but we’re going to grill anyway!

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you? air conditioning!

CP dream liners set. W/e: reference the old Congregationalist prayer that my mum called the prayer of procrastination: โ€˜We have left undone those things we ought to have done..โ€™ Pricey: always believed in the old adage that you should spend more on frequently used things rather than on the occasion pieces. Recently I bought about 1Kโ€™s worth of Haflinger shoes from Amazon and at times order from Germany. Practical, bec now I cannot tolerate anything but felt shoes and flip flops. My real splurge: Creed scent, but only on hella sale (thanks, Muse.) I try not to buy anything that is recognizable as expensive or obviously branded. Under the radar on the down-low for me.

Helene Avatar

The sweet. lovely dogs!

Recent Purchases/Rediscoveries: No purchases, unless you count my dogs liver health supplement. I did order some skincare and SPF yesterday though.
Rediscoveries, MAC Rebel lipstick. I don’t know why I’ve not used it in a long time, it’s a perfect, gorgeous lipstick and I love it. Oh, and UD Naked 3, I have used it all week and though old it’s still going strong and have the perfect nude-ish shades. I used it so much years ago and totally understand why, it’s a great palette for my colouring.

Weekend plans: Same old garden and dog the fun part, household chores, not a favourite.

Whatโ€™s one thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you?
It’s been a long time since I spent on anything really costly.
I once bought a jacket from YSL, it was made out of pure wool and had a lovely red colour, I loved it and used it for years and years. In the end it was probably worth the cost, considering how many years I used it, but it was really expensive. I did love it so much though..

Caroline Avatar

Recent purchases: The Mielke Way, Heart Dog and Magellan’s Light eyeshadow singles from the Sydney Grace & Temptalia collab! Can’t wait to try them out ….

Weekend plans: Work, work … and more work ๐Ÿ™

One thing you spent more on than others might but was totally worth it to you: A new bed for my daughter’s boyfriend when he comes over in July. He’s 28 stone and needs something seriously heavy duty. And it doesn’t creak either!
