Five for Friday: Products I'm Trying to Resist, Vol. 2

Five for Friday: Products I’m Trying to Resist

The good news is I haven’t caved on any of the five things from last Friday.  The bad news is that is only because I was in a hurry and kind of forgot all about what I meant to get at Nordstrom on Thursday.  I’m definitely caving in on Guerlain’s Tinted Moisturizer and potentially Philosophy’s Raspberries & Cream set.

  • Philosophy Pure Grace Hand Wash ($18.00) showed up at Nordstrom.com today. I didn’t know Philosophy made hand soap… hmm. We go through quite a bit of soap here, so I might have to try this one since I love Philosophy’s Shower Gels so much.
  • Guerlain The 180 Year Collector’s Case ($3,750.00) is only on this list because it was the most outlandish product I saw this week. Holy moly, that’s a lot of perfume and a lot of bucks you need to shell out for ’em. Just in case we have some high rollers reading this blog, it contains 1 oz. bottles of 1853 Eau de Cologne Impériale, 1889 Jicky, 1912 LHeure Bleue, 1919 Mitsouko, 1925 Shalima, 1959 Vetiver, 1965 Habit Rouge, 1979 Nahema, 1989 Samsara, 2003 L’Instant de Guerlain, 2004 L’Instant de Guerlain pour Homme, 2005 Rose Barbare, 2005 Angélique Noire, 2005 Cuir Belluga, 2006 Bois de Arménie, 2006 Insolence, 2007 Iris Ganache, 2008 Cruel Gardénia.
  • Cake Beauty Cake Kiss Lemon Chiffon Lip Butter Lemon Chiffon ($9.00) sounds so, so yummy. I tried a Cake Beauty Lip Butter wayyy back in the day, and I remember liking it so much I finished the pot!
  • Smashbox Cream Eye Liner Palette Metallic ($32.00) has ten shades of Smashbox’s cream eyeliners in metallic finishes. I’ve never tried one of Smashbox’s cream eyeliner palettes — are they any good? Better than pots?
  • Guerlain Liquid Eyeliner ($35.00) is available in four shades (00 Metal D’or, 01 Noir Ebene, 02 Bleu, and 03 Encre Brun), and it is a little tempting. Anyone try this?

What five products are on YOUR lust list this week?

I’ve tried the Guerlain eye-liner but not worth the price, imo. I’ve tried liquid eye-liners far better (and less expensive) than this. I don’t like its texture and the super-super-super-fine brush.

Terry Avatar

The best liquid e/l I’ve ever tried is MAC Liquidlast Liner, hands down. As for eyeliners in other formulas, I love MAC Fluidline and Clinique gel eyeliners.

Lesley Avatar

Christine, Philosophy also has a hand wash and lotion in Amazing Grace. It comes as a duo in a little caddy:) Very cute, smells great, although I think it is sold out at the Philosophy website, might be able to get it other places

I think I bought all my lust products yesterday and today when the Liberty of London collection came out in the UK – Bough Grey e/s, Prim & Proper blush, Shell Pearl b/p

Am still lemming for Nars Sheer Glow foundation but am waiting until I finish my Clinique Even Better – also helped by the fact there isn’t a store near me which sells it and I have to wait until I next go to London or Birmingham.

I was lemming some of the pearlglides and greasepaints but I seem to have got over that now.

Final thing I’m trying to resist is eyeshadow generally – I just got a new 15 pallette and I feel the urge to fill it up! 🙂

Emma Avatar

Give Me Liberty of London is coming to Iceland this weekend so I’m buying English Accents Lipglass, Shell Pearl BP and Dirty Plum Blush 😉
Then I’m also gonna buy the Spring Colour Forecast 4 Eyeshadow Quad and the MAC 188 brush-to apply the Dirty Plum blush.. 🙂

Bee Avatar

Omg that collector’s care from Guerlain sounds really tempting!!
And their eyeliner is gorgeous, very intense colour; the only thing you have to be really careful about is applying it: it dries kinda fast so you have to be very fast when using it, otherwise it’s one of my fav make up products. 🙂
Oh and the smashbox palette… I wish we had those in romania as well 🙁 or anything Smashbox really.

shivachan Avatar

I don’t know if they changed much with this one, but the Smashbox ‘Best of Cream Eye Liner Palate’ wasn’t so great. The colors did not set very well on their own (and they all looked similar when you put them on). The ones in the pots are WWWAAAAAAYYY better.

Charan Avatar

God, where should I begin? I am resisting to buy high-end foundation which is the fault of beauty blogs 😀 . I am in definitely need of the perfect foundation. I am thinking of Clinique or Nars sheer glow. I am totally scared of getting the revlon foundation as I am 99% sure that i will get the wrong colour. I most definitely need to go to the MUA .

Cindy Avatar

Not a lust or a lemming, but an opinion on Smashbox Liner Palettes ;

I’ve bought Smashbox liner palettes before. It’s an inexpensive way to testdrive several shades at once, and, let’s face it, it’s virtually impossible to ever get to the bottom of one of the pot type before it dries out or is so old it should be tossed, so the smaller amount is actually an advantage! They have the same creamy consistency that the pots do, actually slightly more creamy, in a good way, more like MAC’s Fluidline than the Jetset liner, which I found a little pull-y. This is a case where you should cave, not resist!

Elana Avatar

I have the Guerlain liquid liner in blue and brown, and the quality really varies between colours. Blue is a lovely jewel tone that tends to get chunky- you get either too much payoff or not enough. Brown is a very pretty and flattering coffee with a much smoother consistency and the great little brush makes a really fine flick.

Smashbox cream eyeliner palette, definitely not worth the $32. I bought the previous palette with the darker shades, and I found it to be hard to applyn. They were definitely not as smooth nor as easily to wear compared to the stila smudge pots. I was deseparately trying to make it work. Using different applicators to the point where a friend of mines was like “just return it, it shouldn’t be that hard to put on” Have to love sephora for their return policy. Needless to say I returned it within a week of playing with it. You need to get a lot of product on a brush for the color to even show and even then color does not last.

Cherie Avatar

Well, I guess I’m the black sheep here – I purchased the Smashbox palette a few years back and hit pan on most of the colours. It’s a fantastic travel mate too (I love the slim case)! I would recommend this to try out the eyelines at the very least. I really liked the taupe ones. However, I’m on a liquid liner kick these days and haven’t repurchased.

Alex Avatar

hahah I guess this is a try for yourself then either love or hate product. I LOVE it. I get all my smashbox from sephora or qvc (good return policies). I have both the “Proof” and “Metallic” palettes. Proof has your basic solid black, brown, green, and everywhere in between…very user friendly. Metallic is my favorite because it is way more fun!!! I have had it for a while now because QVC got it exclusive first for a while. BEAUTIFUL colors that are fun to travel with!!! Yes that green and blue on top are just as beautiful in person. The jet set is tougher and will stay on longer so I LOVE using it on my water line and for crisp clean cat eyes. This I use with a sharp brush for more definition yet a creamy soft look or smudged with a pencil brush on top and on bottom for a quick smoky effect on top of a paint pot since they are creamy. The light colors are good for the inner corner and cheek bone highlights and the darker ones are great bases because they all have a cool metallic finish. Basically I love this and have found multiple use for ALL of the colors. I would atleast give it a try and yes it is better than the pots IMO because you get more color variety. Yes, you do get a lot less of each color this way but with make-up collections like ours (and I mean most of the people who love your blog) it will take a while to hit pan on all of these shades as I have a ton of other liners I love as well. This is just a great addition! Plus, the pots will dry out faster, not sure why though! Hope this helped!

I super hated my Smashbox palette. Someone stole it from my kit during my performance in a play; wasn’t much of a loss.

Bad color payoff. All the colors looked alike on my lids, and they were not very pigmented. Afterwards I just felt like I applied cheap e/s on my lids.

Smudge factor. 100% ultra smudgy! It’s probably the smudgiest eyeliner I’ve ever tried, only second to my E.L.F. eyeliner pen, which put blue ink all over my face during a hot day.

Really bad packaging. I hate the rubbery packaging, because it peels off and catches all the dirt. And the Smashbox name got peeled off the cover too. So it looked like some cheap makeup I bought from the dollar bin. I was surprised somebody stole it; it was ugly.

I could go on, but this product is not worth my time, haha! Just to help you decide, Christine.

krisprimps Avatar

I have the older Smashbox palette with the darker colors – I was definitely disappointed. No staying power on me! I had better luck with Stila smudge pots.

Personally trying to resist more MAC Art Collection – not sure how hard I’m going to try, though. 😛

Right now I am lusting the Guerlain Rouges G lipsticks haaaaarrrrd! I want, like, five or six different shades, and that’s not counting the ones I’m on the fence about, LOL! I blame this you, Christine! 😉

listenlikethieves Avatar

I’m trying to resist Bobbi Brown’s Aquamarine palette. I need another cream blush like I need a hole in the head, but I still fantasize about that gorgeous pale blue shadow.

Ceriene Avatar

All things Guerlain! The only things that are keeping me from snagging their Rouge G’s are the price and the heavy metal casing. Would you consider the metal casings on those lipsticks too heavy for you to consider bringing out with you all that often, Christine?

I think I can resist The 180 Year Collector’s Case though. That price… man. XD I’m a little curious as to what kind of customers would purchase the collection though. Wouldn’t a hardcore Guerlain fragrance fan have bought at least some of those scents already?

Ashley Avatar

I almost bought my mom the cream liner palette for Christmas, but looking on MUA and other places, the reviews were not so hot. That lemon chiffon butter sounds heavenly, but then again I love anything that smells like lemons and cake!

Pes Avatar

I have the Guerlain liner in Brun and pretty much don’t like it (my mother hated it so she gave it to me). The day I put it on, I went to the MAC counter and one of the sales guys told me my liner was flaking. Plus the neck of the bottle broke, causing dry out.

SpecimenW75 Avatar

The Five items I’m really trying to resist (which will literally have to wait until NEXT week Friday) are: Urban Decay’s eyeshadow primer in Eden, Nars eyeshadow duo in Elsa and Kuala Lumpur, Nars lipstick in Afghan Red and Nars single eyeshadow in Voyage — all beautiful colors I saw walking around Sephora yesterday. With the primer in Eden, the colors are so brilliant and more enhanced. I can’t wait.

SpecimenW75 Avatar

I caved! I got Kuala Lumpur. It looks phenomenal. 🙂 Also, I caved and got Chanel’s Nouvelle Vague at Saks today after work. I commented earlier that I would never get another Chanel polish, but holey shamoley-is this color astonishing!

SpecimenW75 Avatar

I clicked “submit” by mistake in utter excitement- I also wanted to say that earlier I said I would never get another Chanel polish because it chips, but this was a MUST HAVE. It really DOES look like the Tiffany color theme! ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT RESIST. I might buy another and another and another-extra for me in case it gets sold out and the others for my sisters. Thank you for your beautiful site to keep me informed! LOVE!!!

Alison Avatar

the colours in the smashbox liner pallete are really nice but they dont apply all that smoothly, and they dry out quicker than pots because they’re not sealed as well.

i’ve hit pan on most of them though because they’re pretty colours and there isnt that much in the pan.

Pinkgirl Avatar

I have NC 25/30 or Diorskin Nude 031 skintone, and the Guerlain tinted moisturizer in blonde is really dark on me.
The returns policy in the UK is rubbish, so I’m stuck with it. I’d try instore before you buy Christine. xx.

JoElla Avatar

I do like the Smashbox cream eyeliners. I have never had a problem with them drying out on me. But sometimes they are not the most long lasting eyeliners out there.

Philosophy.. I love pure grace, love the whole line (except that dreaded buffing body wash BLECK) but I just cannot see myself paying 18 bucks for a hand wash. I just can’t do it.

liana Avatar

The last Smashbox cream eyeliner pallete I bought a year ago sucked so badly! im a big fan of mac fluidlines so when i tried this pallete, it did not live up to my expectations. They had no staying power, its like lining your eyes with butter. I even tried to use them as eyeshadows and they creased like crazy. I hope the new palette this year is improved!

Monica Avatar

I have the Guerlain liquid eye-liner. I like it for the most part as it is one of the few eyeliners that is smudge-proof and sweat-proof. One thing I do not like that is after you’ve had it for awhile, the formula tends to glob up and soldify, so you go through them pretty quick, and it’s expensive too

Melissa Avatar

I did not like the Smashbox creme liners at all. They had very poor staying power and smudged quickly. They disappeared into a messy blur quickly. On the other hand, Smashbox has some waterproof cream/gel liners that are actually pretty good. Love your blog!

Dana Avatar

Smashbox’s cream liner formula is not that great, I find them hard to apply and the pigment not so intense. I like their Jetliner formulation better. However, I do like Mac Fluidline, Stila Smudgepots and MUFE creamliner (in the pot – don’t remember the name) better then the Jetset.

Victoria Avatar

Don’t buy the Smashbox palette. I have the Best of Smashbox one and I hate it. The consistency of each liner is so dry; I had to put water in it to pick up any color at all, and only a couple of the shades were vibrant. The black looked more like a gray too!

Vesper Avatar

I bought the Smashbox palette for $12, I would say it was worth the money. I don’t know about $36, though. I have different priorities than other people – I don’t want my liners to be hyper-pigmented, because it looks weird on me, and I like ones that come off easily, without having to use sandpaper.

Pigmentation: C
Smudginess: B+ (over UDPP)
Ease of use: B
Staying power: B+ (top lash line) D (lower lash line)
Color variety: A
Portability: A
Price: C

Vesper Avatar

BTW, I have the Proof palette, which is all solids except for two shades. The Metallic palette might have a much different color payoff because of the frost formula.

Cathy Avatar

Christine, the Philosophy hand wash just came out;that’s why you’ve not seen it before.Although I love Smashbox Jet Set and Shadow Liners, the cream palettes do NOT have the same staying power…save your money.I threw mine out,it was so bad!(the colors were beautiful, though).

EC Avatar

The Smashbox liners blow! They’re one of the worst products I’ve ever used, and they’re not even longwearing, let alone waterproof. Big waste of money!

Luisafer Avatar

LOL, I do the same!!! I post many of the product you public here, and then I start crossing the ones I don’t need and only leave the ones I really love or need… other wise would be broken or wouldn’t eat LOL
