Does more choice in products these days overwhelm or delight you?

I enjoy it overall, since I think variety is good–we all have different preferences, so having options at different price points, retailers, etc. is a good thing. I can see it being overwhelming, though, especially if one is new to beauty!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! I like having there be lots of options that I can then sift through! I enjoy the “hunt” and finding the best thing. Once it’s actually in my collection, though, I don’t like having very much to choose from at that point because I’ll forget about things and neglect good stuff.

I think more variety means more choices available. So for most people it probably means a higher chance of picking sth they like.
But for sb getting started or “changing direction” -like me- it also means more scope for making bad purchases before you’ve learnt what suits you and to separate that from what (often sneaky) ads are telling you should suit you.
I don’ t think many things fall into the one size fits all in terms of makeup. And I wish sb had told me a looong time ago just because a certain colour looks great on a particular person it doesn’t mean it will look fab on me (ahhh, the money I could have saved)!

I enjoy it – I love all the choices, looking at all the pretty new things – but I’m also getting a little jaded. Even when something really stellar comes out, I’m thinking “Do I have similar stuff?” and “Do I need another palette/lipstick/etc?” There’s a lot of competition for my money!

I am not at all new to makeup but I am overwhelmed by the sheer volume. I find it hard to determine whether something really is new or, if it’s an improvement of an existing formula, is the improvement significant enough to warrant replacing what I already own. As a result, I am not buying much these days. I certainly will not be Rouge or Platinum in 2022 and I won’t even be VIB at Sephora.

I really like having a lot of choices and makeup is not a, “One product fits all”, kind of thing. Better too many choices than not enough. For years, being super fair made it difficult to find things and then my daughter, who is of mixed race, has the opposite problem. I do think that if a brand releases too many products they end up cutting off their nose to spite there faces and I think that is how I feel about ColourPop right now. Yes, a lot of choice is good but they launch a new line three times a week, it seems. You don’t have time to receive and wear one line and the next is up and gone. They are competing with themselves.

In a way I am delighted, since it means people with different tastes, personalities, skin colors, skin types, personal beliefs, budgets, etc. have a choice.

But personally I am overwhelmed. I get choice paralysis. 😅 That’s why I decided to just own a product of each and mostly repurchase the same products once they finished. It’s too much choice for me, from different brands, different products… If one of my favorites was discontinued, I wouldn’t know even where to begin, even if I’m quite connected to the beauty review space.

I find it a little overwhelming and distracting. I’d rather there be fewer choices but extreme quality instead of repeating with different names. Quality not quantity.

Having more choices in eye palettes and beauty products generally tends to delight me as I keep hoping that somewhere in all of these offerings there is something for me.
With brands still having their love affair with pinks, oranges and reds or murky, muddy shades in mattes, I am still waiting for something to love.

I love color period. Even if it’s not a color I can wear or buy, I still love looking at it. I’m the same way with art supplies, paint swatch books, everything. It makes my eyes, heart and soul happy. I am not overwhelmed at all.

I mean… I guess it’s technically more. But over the years I’ve gotten to know my skin’s preferences as well as my own personal aesthetic preferences and between the two I’ve seen about 5-10% of releases actually catch my eye. So it’s more choice overall if you don’t have skin issues and are a tan/medium skin-tone; but for those of us at the end of any spectrum (tone – in my case lightest – even lighter than most brands even think about; type – in my case very *very* dry; preferences that don’t include pink in any form – blush, highlighter, eyeshadow, lipstick, etc…), there still isn’t a ton of variety. Which I’m ok with. The things that *do* come out that I’m in to, like sandy nude lipsticks, are often instant loves.

Overwhelmed for sure. I’m probably older than most of the people following you so I remember the days when there were far less companies/brands and the high end ones always released a seasonal color story that we really anticipated. Now they just crank out new products or overhaul standard ones to make them seem new. The whole celebrity & influencer thing frankly leaves me cold – everyone is putting out their own brand now, and most of the pop culture collaborations are just silly (SpongeBob makeup?). There are just too many lines releasing too many products too often. I just can’t keep up. I guess the good thing is that I’m spending less and focusing on things that I really like.
