Do you use your limited edition products as much as permanent products?
Do you use your limited edition products as much as permanent products? Or do you avoid using them in case you run out? Why/why not?
If there’s a product I like, I would keep using it, no matter the status — that is assuming I was a normal consumer and not a beauty blogger. Since I am a beauty blogger, I am usually testing something new, so I don’t have a chance to use many products extensively once I’ve finished testing them. There are a few products I reach for on personal days, and that is when I use what I want to and not think about how it relates to the blog.

I use what I want to use on any given day, no matter what the status of the item is. A lot of times, I use things so slowly that even permanent products are discontinued by the time I’d use them up (like nail polishes, eyeshadows).
I do have one little quirk–I can almost never bring myself to use up the last bit of something I can’t rebuy. I end up subconsciously rationing use of an item like that down to a standstill when I start to run out!
Same here! 😀
Me too… I feel so OCD when I notice that!
I try to use my limited edition products a little at a time. The only ones I don’t is LUSH products. I just can’t help it lol. Their Ghost shower gel is sooo good.
Nope (although I don’t have many). I have a really bad habit of wanting to ‘save’ things or ‘waste’ them on work or school. I’ve used my Hibiscus lipstick only 4 times (even though I love it and get tons of compliments) and Candy Yum-yum only once. They’ll probably dry up before I ever finish them lol.
i agree with you on candy yum yum lol
I’ll take them from you when they do! :p
I usually use them the same unless it’s something that I am running low on and have 1 or no back ups then I will use that sparingly like for special occasions if it is a favorite shade.
I try to limit my usage of my LE products, especially MAC lipsticks. If I can use a similar shade that’s a permanent one, I’d use that instead.
I use them as regularly as any other product I own. I don’t really see the sense in “saving” them, when there are so many new great limited editions coming out every month. If I like something I would rather use it than let it go bad before I had the chance…
If it’s something easily used up quickly, I may ration it, but for the most part I don’t. I go through my products slowly enough that by the time I run out, I figure some company, somewhere, is bound to release something close to it.
I use it the same as any product since it would be a waste not to use it
I can’t seem to dent anything as when I’m waiting on something I tend to have more on back order!!!
Yes. I use what I want every day.If I like something it either goes in a drawer that contains things I want to be able to get my hands on quickly or it will go into a drawer that is second in line that is basically temp storage (drawer is decieving it’s more like a bin). I have several bins for storage where I go through them once in a while and pull things out to bring them into rotation. But I do collect, given that I do buy so many products I need to bring myself to weed through them and donate to a woman’s shelter as Christine does because I have several lifetimes of uses I’m sure. 🙂
i use my limited edition products whenever i want to.
i don’t care if they are dicontinued or not.. because it doesn’t make sense to save a product just because it’s discontinued.. it is going bad anyway… and than your sad because you bought a wonderful product and have to throw it away before you were able to use it just a few times!
Almost all of my beauty products are Limited Edition, I rarely purchase anything that’s from a permanent line ’cause I know they’ll be there whenever I need them. I use them almost daily, ’cause they’re still products that are made for usage, not only for collecting ^^
If it’s something I really like and can’t find anymore I tend to subconsciously ration it while trying to find a dupe.
It depends on the product material. If it is powder (blushes, eyeshadows, msfs, beauty powders etc) I use it constantly for a month or so, and then, I use it sparingly, so as to preserve it, with the exception of Moleskin and Creamy Bisque eyeshadows from the Mac Make me Over collection that I love and use all the time.
If it is an eye product like paint pot, mascara or something in general that has a “limited” span of life, as soon as I open it I use it until I finish it.
For lipsticks and lipglosses, I don’t have that many so when I purchase an item I use it regularly, in rotation with the other lip products I have.
I use all things pretty equally. I figure I bought the LE product to use and enjoy it – because I really love it – so why not get the enjoyment of it by using it for its intended purpose. Also, with a lot of products, if not used, they’ll just go “off” over time.
I use my makeup as needed- paying absolutely no attention to whether or not it’s Limited Edition. Frankly, the way makeup lines discontinue & revamp constantly, anything could be LE! Besides, change is good- if I can’t get the same thing when I run out, that’s probably a good thing.
I have a few limited edition items that I love and use sparingly. One of them is MAC Violet Dear e/s. It was one of the first colors I bought and even though I know there are dupes out there I still won’t use the rest of it.
Some l.e’s like MAC Nanogold I bought in bulk, well 3, so I wouldn’t run out as fast and pray they repromote it again. Others like MAC Firespot, Cosmic, Waternymph, and Aquavert I use sparingly even though I don’t think I could go through the whole pan and I have backups of them all.
There was a type of MAC lipglass that was the best formula and I have 3 colors left: Bliss Me, Go Lightly, and Sizzlepeach that I will try to make last forever because I don’t think they will ever come back 🙁
Yes, absolutely. I buy makeup (limited or otherwise) to use it, not to collect and stare at it!
I definitely don’t use them as much as permanent products. I try to limit my usage, or maybe even not at all, if the product’s design or quality is especially beautiful.
I actually tend to use LE products more than permanent, and the only reason is because I actually like them better. I try to pace myself so I don’t run out too quickly. But I have told myself from now on when something is LE and I love it that I will buy multiples.
Yes I do, unless it’s a lipstick I’m absolutely in love with and starting to get low on, in which case, I’ll ease back and search desperately for a dupe 🙂
The temptation – which I’ve succumbed to in the past – is to subconsciously slow down on the LE or discontinued products. I’m really trying *not* to do this, and to use things up at a natural pace, which means wearing them whenever I feel like it.
There will always be something out there you love, even if one thing isn’t available any more. I don’t even know if anything is really ever HG. I very rarely buy back ups because by the time something like a MAC pigment runs out I’ll be 45 or something, and I’m not going to have the same style then as I did when I was 29.
If I like the product, then I’ll use it. No sense letting the product sit in a draw somewhere.
I use what I want when I want to use it. The only time I ever try to “ration” a product is if it’s a favorite of mine, i.e. Mac Mellow Mood lipstick, but this is usually only reserved for lipstick since that’s the only product I ever use up. I figure if I don’t use the products I have just because they’re limited edition, they’ll go bad and I’ll kick myself for never using it and not using it up. I wish I had the money to be able to buy pretty limited edition items just for show, but until that happens, I’ll stick to using my products. Also, I try not to buy items with pretty “designs” or whatever that may not go all the way through the product because then I’m even less likely to actually use it.
/End LE rant
Oh yes. I mostly only buy LEs anyway. And I have so much stuff that it takes me ages to go through them.
of course! My viva glam Gaga 1 is almost done cause I use it every single day. I like to use the products I want no matter the status of it.
I usually try and find a similar color for the limited edition long before it runs out. So far, I’ve always found somehting similar, so it never bothered me 🙂
The way I look at is, everything is limited edition. everything is discontinued at some point sooner or later
There are products while I will use only on special occasions because they’re discontinued or otherwise no longer available for purchase and I love them so much.
Life is too short to save items that make me happy. I use LE items at the same rate as permanent line products. Besides which, if I save them I can’t make room for new things. I burn my fancy candles too! 🙂
This is a real conundrum. Do I use it and risk not being able to find a dupe down the road, or use it sparingly and have it go bad before I can finish it? After having to trash some lipsticks and glosses because they went off before I finished them, I’m now trying to just use the LE products the same as any others.
I use all of my items equally, no matter what their status is. I really don’t see the point of buying an item only to look at it, and never use it. I figure if I really LOVE a limited edition item, I can usually find a fairly close dupe for it.
Yup. I don’t wear makeup often enough to worry that I’ll soon hit pan on anything, so even if something is limited edition I’ll use it when I want to! I mean, it’s makeup. Storing it is like buying a beautiful dress that you don’t wear, then the “special occasion” never comes along and you lose interest in that dress, which would be a waste of money in my book. Plus I have high hopes in this industry. Something more interesting is bound to show up on the market by the time I run out of a certain product.
Yup, I use them with abandon. I’ve never even come close to finishing a product (except mascara). So, I’m not worried about running out.
There are a couple LE products in my stash right now that I think I will eventually finish, but it’s going to take so long that I’d have to throw them out anyway due to age at that point.
Yes and no. I have one Lancome limited edition lipstick which I love, but don’t wear too often because I want to make it last. I regret not buying a back up, despite always telling myself I would never be the consumer who bought into the limited edition hype / bought back ups / become precious over a lipstick.
Saying that, I’d much rather use it to pan than have it dry out / go off or lose it
