Do you need more than one eyeshadow primer in your stash?

Do you need more than one eyeshadow primer in your stash? Does one work better for some things than another?

If I want something really vibrant, I’ll often use a colored base similar to the shades in the look. Generally, I just use one, though–NARS Smudgeproof! I find that’s a particularly good one for me, because it gives me hold and vibrancy without muting the color.

NEED is such a relative term when it comes to makeup, LOL!! Do I *need* more than one eyeshadow primer? Nope! But I still have more than one! lol xP All the brands come out with one in their palettes/sets!

But definitely for bases–shadow sticks, cream shadows, etc. Of course! One of each shade! 10 of each of my favorite shades! 😉

I have multiple eyeshadow bases, but only one primer. The ELF $1 primer. It’s good and functional. But I’m considering buying one more, just to switch it up from time to time and for comparative purposes.

I love MAC’s Paint Pots as eyeshadow bases and in the morning I mainly grab these over any other eyeshadow primer. For everyday looks, I use a skin toned one (I think it’s painterly). For intense night-time looks I use the pitch black one (blackground?), for darker neutral eyes I use indianwood or constructivist. I have other colors from limited-edition releases, but I don’t tend to use them very often.

Im with you Christine!I’ll use a color that is similar to my eyeshadows. I switch between 4, my painterly paint pot, nyx white base, b- slap cosmetics corrector, and urban decay primer potion. My favorite being my nyx white! I just love it, it doesn’t crease, goes with everything and makes colors pop! The $6 dollar price tag doesn’t hurt either. I will have to try the Nars base, i’ve heard such great things about it!!

Me too. Which is why I don’t use traditional eye primers — they all crease on my oil slick lids.

Try using Illuminare Cosmetics All-Day Color Creaseless liquid mineral eyeshadows — my eyeshadows never crease when I use this as a base even when I flew to Austrailia and I had on my eyeshadow for 20 hours straight.

Also, another good alternative is the MAC Paints, yes they are messy but they do work in pinch and have a nice color selection as well.

I noticed that using eyeshadow primer creates this “dragon-scales” look on a surface of an eyelids whith the eyeshadows. Not using the primer – often creates much more natural and smooth look…

I like using UD Primer Potion on my lids ’cause it helps with the excessive oil while I use Too faced Shadow Insurance on my lower lashline (when I wear smoked out look) ’cause it glides on better.

I use only the Too Faced primer, it seems it brings out all the colours on me – I use it even for the ‘only eyeliner’ look. I have creased, wrinkly eyelids (inherited) since childhood and not even UD can help. 🙂

I have 3 different types of primers in my stash and numerous paint pots and eyeshadow bases… its good to have a few different options, like my real heavy duty primer that is thick cream for weekends or parties and my softer primers that are thin creams i use for during the week for work

I don’t. I might if I wore mattes and wanted them shimmery at times, but since I don’t, a normal matte primer works for me. (I’m currently working through a mini UD PP – I think L’Oréal De-Crease is a lot better.)

If the NARS Smudgeproof! wasn’t $29 in Canada i would have been tempted to get it. With Too Faced Shadow Insurance it’s now $24CAN. >_<

Currently I'm working through my pot of Lime Crime EYESHADOW HELPER waterproof eyeshadow primer. Which I love and got a discount on through the LA IMATS (lovely girl picked it up for me. *_*)!
I know the brand has gotten flack for their "unoriginal" eyeshadow blends. Trust me there are plenty of high end brands doing the same thing to get those shades into their formula.

I probably don’t NEED more than one, but I certainly HAVE more than one. Goodness, even if you don’t count the UD 24/7 shadow pencils, I have Too Faced Shadow Insurance (my first ever and still my true love), UD’s primer in Eden, Sin, and Greed (little sample sizes that come with palettes!), a full size of LORAC’s eye primer (came with a kit!), and three shades of Bare Escentual’s Prime Time shadow, which is the only cream product I’ve ever found that I can just apply and go–no primer, no powder, just that!

Is it bad that my initial reaction to this question was “no way, just find your favorite and go with it!”

Milessa Avatar

I have super oily lids, so in order to prevent creasing, I generally layer two primers. Sometimes I use a colored base, over a regular primer. In short, I have lots of primers in my stash 🙂

I differentiate between primers and bases. Bases can be primers when they work as such for your skin type. For me they often don’t work, so I have one primer – Urban Decay Primer Potion. Then I have several colored bases – MAC paint pots, several large eyeshadow pencils and MAC greasepaint sticks. I probably don’t need that many different bases and I only use them sporadically but they are nice to have.

Courtney Avatar

Yes! I use two very different types. First I have your basic MAC paint pot or UD shadow primer to create a smooth, even surface when needed. The other product I used often is Fyrinnae’s Pixie Epoxy which is a gel base, rather than a cream base. It holds loose shadows/pigments/glitter very well, but it’s colorless and won’t smooth out the skin surface.

I have UDPP, of course, and it’s very good. I also have one from Make Up Store, it’s in a jar, and very sticky and gewy. It makes the eyeshadow stick better and makes the shadow more metallic.
