New Deals & Sales at Ulta
Remember to ALWAYS check your bonus offers! Many of Ulta’s reward-based offers require activation, so you can go through your bonus offers and activate any and all offers you want to take advantage of. Sometimes the bonus offers are targeted, so they may not be available to all members. Ulta regularly sends out $ off promotions and X bonus points with $ purchase through their newsletter, which are often targeted as well, and those will have unique codes.

How Ulta’s Reward Points Work
Normally, members earn 1 point per dollar spent, but Ulta regularly hold point multiplier events, like this September’s Beauty Stars. Additionally, if you spend $450 in a calendar year, you’ll be a Platinum member, which earns points 25% faster, and if you spend $1,200 in a calendar year, you’ll be a Diamond member, and this tier earns points 50% faster. The reward points can be used to get $X off future purchases.
Diamond and Platinum members often have perks only eligible to those membership levels, such as 10X points multipler event on eligible brands/products, boosted point multipliers (Ulta often runs 2X, 3x, and 4X point events with the multipler getting higher based on your membership level). Points never expire for Platinum and Diamond members!
In order to participate in multiplier events, you just have to be an Ultamate Rewards member (free to join), and any products you purchase during the event will earn 5 points for every dollar spent. Ulta has one of the best rewards programs in beauty–sometimes they make it too easy to earn points!
Ulta Points Charts
Here’s an overview of Ulta’s reward points, what they can be redeemed for, and effectively what the “cash back” (limited to using it on a future Ulta purchase!) at the base level, which is 1 point per dollar spent. The first three tables are the base rewards based on membership level; member, Platinum ($400 yearly spend), and Diamond ($1200 yearly spend).
Ulta Point Charts for Multiplier Events
Below, you’ll find information about spend thresholds to earn points with the equivalent “cash back” (again, cash back that can only be used toward a future purchase at Ulta!). These really show how quickly points can rack up during the multiplier events!
Ulta Point Charts by Membership Level + Credit Card
Ulta offers a store credit card, which has a few perks. You’ll get 20% off your first purchase, and you’ll earn 500 bonus points as a welcome if you spend $500 within the first 90 days outside of Ulta. You can read more about how the card works and the terms here. The more rewarding part of using Ulta’s credit card is that you’ll receive an additional point for every dollar spent at Ulta (on the card), which brings up base points to 2X for members, 2.25X for Platinum members, and 2.5X for Diamond members.
We do not advocate spending more than you can afford. You want to pay off the full balance each month. It is not worth earning more points if you’re spending more than you can afford! If it’s between lipstick and rent, the responsible choice is rent! Very helpful. I just noticed that I bought one of the 5x products but I don’t seem to have gotten any extra points. It was the Bliss Jelly Glow Peel ($12). I see 15 base points earned and no bonus. Does that sound right for Platinum? Do the 5x (subtracting the base) show as Bonus Points?
Hey Kitty!
Did you activate the offer it in your profile? Most of the point multipliers require activation! (Going to go make sure I put that in the post, too.) I know Ulta has done adjustments for points, though!
Yes I always activate 5x unless it’s something I don’t buy. Like right now, I’ve got non-activated a fragrance, Clinique, and TF mascara. The only 5x points I see that I activated is the best selfie. It seems that if there were another 5x for the Beauty Stars link you show, that it would show, correct? I don’t see it at all. Maybe it’s only for Diamond level?
The Best Selfie offer is the beauty stars offer! 🙂
Okay. I just got that offer today. Which I activated (too late for yesterday).
Oooh, yeah, I missed that you made the purchase yesterday!
Pretty sure i’ve goofed on activation before, and gotten confused about the points. Just because it says hello, so and so, or you have clicked over from the email does not mean you are activated. Sometimes going from the email does activate, but it does not always. Usually you have to go through your profile. If you do not get a separate screen that says you are activated and your offer will be available soon (or something like that) you are not activated. Always look for that confirmation of activation screen. Thanks, Christine, for the Ultimate MBA quant jock guide to Ulta’s point system. You explain it far better than they do!
I think it is pretty universally accepted that Ulta’s reward system is head and shoulders above Sephora, although Sephora seems to be wanting to change their system a little. I have been Diamond at Ulta for quite some time and I really enjoy that they are adding so many new brands. I also prefer shopping at Ulta when actually visiting a brick and mortar store. Ulta always seems so brightly lit and cheery and I find the preponderance of black in Sephora to be a bit darkening. My big complaint about Ulta is their lack of providing samples, especially when it comes to base and liquid products like primers, foundations, concealers, etc I think it would assist in keeping their costs down as now if I buy a foundation and I get the wrong shade and return it after using they just throw them out. I would stand a better chance of getting a correct shade if I could sample a couple of colours. While on the subject, I wish more brands would offer tester blister packs with a few of the shades in a particular group such as a blister of fair/light, medium/medium dark and dark shade groupings. I would also like to see these in the brick and mortar stores and for a nominal fee I would purchase just to save the hassle of buying, trying, returning.
I wish Ulta would set up an outpost here in Aus. So, so envious…..
I received an email with the two 20 percent off coupons – one for me and one for my bestie. I already used mine. Will Ulta know if I try and use the bestie coupon?
No idea!
