Some Mac Tone Finish Lipstick Dupes
About this Story
Decades ago, there was a MAC lipstick finish called “Tone”. As the name suggests, it was a sheer formula, but to differentiate it from the Glaze and Lustre finishes, it was matte instead of shiny. This likely gave it a blotted look.
The Tone finish was discontinued sometime in the early 00s, and some of the shades were moved into the Glaze and Lustre formulas which in turn reformulated them to be shiny. There isn’t much info online about Tone lipsticks, and everything I know about them is through site archives, old Makeupalley reviews, and online auction photos.
I duped these shades using MAC’s Powder Kiss line because of their matte and sheer quality, but I think Glossier’s Generation G and romand’s Zero Matte lipsticks might be closer in feel.

Hot Tahiti: Sheer mid tone warm plum-pink. Later moved to Glaze.
Touch: Sheer mid tone slighty rosy warm brown. Later moved to Lustre.
Red: ??? (The most elusive MAC lipstick I know of, it’s impossible to search for due to its simple name. I haven’t been able to find it and I assume it was a standard sheer red colour.)
Redwood: Sheer pinky red. Later moved to Glaze?
Desire: Sheer dark warm red-plum. Later moved to Lustre.
(Not included in screenshot) Plush: Sheer orange.
Because info is so hard to come by, these are the only Tone lipsticks I am aware of at the moment. There are definitely more shades unknown to me because the finish had been around since at least the early 90s.
