Burnished Honey

Pat McGrath Burnished Honey Eyeshadow ($25.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a muted, medium copper-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer. The texture was soft, velvety, and a little thinner compared to the brand’s other mattes, though it was blendable and applied evenly to bare skin. It stayed on well for nine hours on me before fading slightly.

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Pat McGrath Crimson Fire Eyeshadow ($25.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep red with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The color payoff was opaque in one layer, and I felt like a little went a long way, so you could use less than you might expect. The texture was smooth, dense without being too firmly-pressed in the pan, and lightly creamy. The eyeshadow adhered evenly to my skin and diffused with little effort along the edges. It lasted nicely for nine and a half hours on me before fading a bit.

It had nearly opaque color coverage that adhered well to my skin and blended out easily. It had a soft, lightly creamy texture that was a bit more loosely-pressed compared to most of the brand’s eyeshadows, but I didn’t have any issues with fallout. This shade wore well for nine hours on me before I noticed any fading. It was actually better than the version found in the Subversive La Vie En Rose palette.

Just Your Voice

Colour Pop Just Your Voice Jelly Much Eyeshadow ($8.00 for 0.23 oz.) is a blackened navy blue base with flecks of blue sparkle and shimmer. In some ways, it looked complex in the jar but didn’t seem to look nearly as complex in person (even contorting myself to try and find that complexity!). The texture was more watery and prone to sheering out when applied so semi-opaque coverage was the best I could get in one layer. This also resulted in slightly patchy application whether I used a flat, synthetic brush or fingertips. I had the best luck applying one layer, letting it set in place, and then using a fluffy brush to gently brush on more product to fill in the gaps. It wore well for 10 hours without fading or creasing on me.

Formula Overview

$8.00/0.23 oz. - $34.78 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "high impact" in a "single swipe" that's longwearing, "won't crease, fade or transfer" and "dries down to a powder finish with zero fall out." These are water-based, so they feel wet and cooling when initially applied, but the reality is that so little product is needed to get coverage on the lid that I didn't feel it was watery or thin when I actually patted it onto my lid with a brush.

I would recommend using less than you think you'll need, and while fingertips can be used to apply, I liked the control of flat, synthetic brushes gave me as fingertips (for me!) applied far more product than needed. If you over-apply, it can feel wet and take longer to dry down, and it ends up taking too long and can pull into creases/fine lines on the lid. If I used about what I needed (there was some wiggle room), it dried down quickly and set to a transfer-resistant/crease-resistant finish. It was harder to blend out once dry, though, and if I wasn't careful, more vigorous blending could disturb and cause the eyeshadow to flake slightly.

They are easier to use than they look, and I think they're quite good overall, though a couple of shades were less stellar. They have a high-shine finish, though I think the more metallic powder and cream eyeshadows give a similar look that I wasn't convinced that the finish on these was above and beyond products that might be easier to use/more user-friendly. I'm not sure that the pot was the best way to go, as the product dries out extremely quickly; to the point where I would advise closing the product after you've taken product out of it, don't let it sit open while you're applying the rest of your makeup--you will see and feel parts of it dry out.

I found the packaging to be rather messy, and I have bits of product along the edge of the jar, along the rim, and it's fiddly to move the stopper from the opening to the lid and back again. I wonder if a squeeze tube might be less messy and make it easier to control the amount of product picked up while also preventing the product from drying out too readily.

Colour Pop I Own You Jelly Much Eyeshadow ($8.00 for 0.23 oz.) is a muted, light-medium red with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had opaque pigmentation, and as tends to be the case with this formula, a little went a long way. The texture was water-like–wet and cool to the touch–but it actually felt more whipped, more mousse-like than most shades have felt to me in this formula. The color applied fairly evenly and dried down fast enough that it didn’t crease or migrate while it did so. The edges diffused without much effort but found I had to be careful to smooth out the product as it was slightly thicker at times. It stayed on well for 10 hours without fading or creasing on me.

Colour Pop Not Today Jelly Much Eyeshadow ($8.00 for 0.23 oz.) is a dark, emerald green with subtle, warm undertones and flecks of copper micro-glitter paired with a metallic finish. It had medium pigmentation that was buildable, but I found it hard to control as the texture seemed on the chunky side–almost more whipped, though still quite watery and “cool” as it went onto my skin. In practice, it looked better and applied better to my actual lid space than when I initially swatched it, though. It didn’t take too to dry down, thankfully, and it had good hold and wear (10 hours without budging), but it definitely emphasized my lid texture.

Colour Pop My Pet Ultra Glossy Lip ($7.00 for 0.11 oz.) has a translucent base but is packed with flecks of multi-colored pearl and larger pink-to-blue shifting sparkle. All of the shimmer and sparkle amounted to a more medium coverage gloss that still managed to feel very smooth and plush on my lips. What I really enjoy about the formula, which this shade showcases, is how smoothing it is of my lip lines, whereas a lot of gloss tends to sink into those pesky lip lines. It wore well for three hours and was hydrating while worn.

Formula Overview

$7.00/0.11 oz. - $63.64 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "hi-shine" with a "non-sticky" texture that "feels amazing" and includes five finishes "from 3-D pearl to sheer tinted colour." They are designed to be a sheerer formula, so many shades are sheer with a smattering of shimmer or sparkle and then a few are more tinted with sheer to semi-sheer coverage but no shimmer. Each gloss has a short, brush-type applicator, which worked better than I expected and didn't leave streaky results behind (in general). They had a sweet, vanilla scent but no discernible taste.

The "Tinted" finish ("glass-like shine with tint of sheer colour and no shimmer") was the least consistent--sometimes prone to unevenness and getting into lip lines, particularly with deeper/richer shades, whereas Pearlescent ("glass-like shine with subtle shimmer") and Prismatic ("glass-like shine with floating multi dimensional pearl and glitters") are sheer to translucent with the major difference being finer shimmer in the Pearlescent finish and larger, more glitter-like particles in the Prismatic finish. Both finishes tended to look plush and more smoothing on my lips. The Creme finish is a "medium-coverage gloss with a creamy finish that does not contain any pearls or glitter." The Metallic is described as a "full-coverage gloss with a mix of pearl and metallic finishes."

The wear time varied by shade but the sheerer ones tended to wear between two and three hours as the formula was, indeed, non-sticky and smooth, which made them lighter-weight and comfortable to wear but shorter wearing. A lot of the sheerer shades ran together, so I would recommend just picking up one or two rather than several as the differences are likely to be lost! Also, keep in mind that sheerer lip colors can look different from person to person due to much of the natural lip color coming through.

Colour Pop Shadow Man Ultra Glossy Lip ($7.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a medium-dark, reddish-copper base with lots of deep, gold shimmer and micro-sparkle. The brand said it has a “golden-green flip,” though it just read lighter/deeper gold–a little molten but not green to my eye. It was intended to have full coverage, and it had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered my lips evenly and didn’t emphasize my lip lines. The consistency was lightweight, plush, and smooth without being tacky. It lasted for four hours and was moisturizing to wear.

Colour Pop Bad Apple Ultra Glossy Lip ($7.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a soft, medium red with subtle, cool undertones and flecks of ruby red and fuchsia micro-sparkle. It had semi-sheer coverage (as marketed) that applied evenly (but the unevenness in my natural lip color made it seem less even) and just a touch a product in my deeper lip lines that I could see in the close-up photo but not in person. The consistency was lightweight, smooth, and non-sticky, which made it easy to apply and to wear. It stayed on well for three hours and was hydrating over time.

ColourPop You Idiots! You Fools! You Imbeciles! Super Shock Cheek (Highlighter) ($8.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a pale beige with a subtle, warm pink-to-peach shifting pearl and flecks of larger, silver micro-glitter. The texture was smooth, emollient without being too wet to the touch, and blendable over bare skin as well as over base products (without lifting them). It had buildable pigmentation from semi-sheer to opaque, depending on application method–fingertips yielded more opaque coverage more readily. It stayed on well for 10 hours before fading slightly, but there were a few wandering sparkles after eight hours of wear.

The color payoff was opaque in a single layer and adhered evenly to bare skin. The texture was lightly creamy, smooth, and denser without being thick or stiff to work with. It lasted well for almost 10 hours on me before fading slightly. It performed consistently with the versions found in the Subversive Metalmorphosis and Decadence palettes.

It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture–dense and a bit more firmly-pressed in the pan–but it picked up well with a brush and applied evenly to bare skin. It stayed on well for almost nine and a half hours before fading slightly on me. It was consistent with the version found in the Subversive La Vie En Rose palette.

This shade was listed as a “EYEdols Pressed Pigment” on the packaging but I didn’t see any warning about use; it contains Red 7 Lake and Red 28 Lake, both of which are listed as “no” for the eye area as color additives by FDA (these are commonly used in other “Pigment” type products that come with the “not intended to be used on the immediate eye area” warning in the US, approved for use areas like the EU).

It had nearly opaque pigmentation but seemed like it was packed with more sparkle than base pigment, which is why there was a slight sheerness detected along the edges if I looked closely. The texture was lightly creamy, dense without being thick, and despite the amount of sparkle in it, the color adhered well with minimal fallout both during application as well as over the nine hours it lasted for.

It had rich, opaque pigmentation with a smooth, denser consistency–it felt like a cream-powder hybrid, as there was some slip to it but didn’t actually feel wet nor did it indent when pushed on. If you’re someone who likes to use black eyeshadow to darken other shades and always worries about overdoing it, this type of texture is great for darkening without fallout or fear of going too heavy as it’s very easy to control. It wore well for 10 hours before fading slightly on me. It performed consistently with the version found in the Subliminal Dark Star palette.

Colour Pop Poor Unfortunate Souls Super Shock Cheek (Highlighter) ($10.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a light lavender with subtle, cool undertones and cooler blue and violet pearl. It had buildable pigmentation from sheer to semi-opaque and was most pigmented by applying with fingertips. The texture was smooth, emollient without being too slippery, and thin–it felt more like a powder as soon as it came into contact with my skin. It applied evenly and blended out with little effort, but I did find that this shade did not blend out as easily as most Super Shock shades have for me. It stayed on well for nine and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Colour Pop Cruella Lux Lipstick ($8.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a bright pop of orange-red with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in a single layer, while the texture felt dense, velvety, and applied fluidly in one stroke across my lips. The texture was lightweight without being clingy, and it wore down to a true, flat matte finish within a half hour (or blot once). There was a bit of emphasize of my natural lip texture but wasn’t noticeable at a normal viewing distance due to the overall vibrancy of the shade (distracting in a good way!). The color lasted well for six hours, left a stain behind, and was non-drying.

The formula that is supposed to be a "creamy-matte" that "glides on like butter, doesn't feather or bleed, and lasts so long you'll forget you're even wearing it." The majority of the shades were quite pigmented with full color payoff in a single stroke with a few in the more semi-opaque coverage range.

The texture was, on average, smooth, lightly creamy, and not too thick or too thin, so there was no tugging during application but the color didn't feel slippery while worn, which made them easier to apply straight from the tube and low-maintenance on the lips.

They tend to dry and wear down to a soft matte finish within one to three hours of wear, and while they are very lightweight on, they hug the lips more as they become more matte (compared to initial feel). The wear time has been between four and six hours for most shades, and most shades were non-drying to lightly hydrating. They were vanilla-scented but had no discernible taste.

Natasha Denona Biba 15-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($129.00 for 1.2 oz.) is a new, permanent palette that features three Metallic eyeshadows, four Cream-Powder eyeshadows (more slip, more of a satin finish), and eight matte eyeshadows. It’s a neutral-themed palette with the first row being more orange-based, the second row being more red/rosy-toned, and the bottom being more neutral/desaturated. I actually think the shades could have worked as three five-pan palettes! There were no troublesome shades in the palette, and the palette felt cohesive so it could work as a standalone, workhorse kind of palette but could also be paired with more colorful palettes, too. The eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing.

The texture was velvety, more firmly-pressed in the pan, and seemed to have slight slip compared to the other shades. It seemed to adhere a bit more strongly in places (particularly swatched) but blended out well on my eye. It had good color coverage, but the Cream-Powder formula has a distinctive feel and result: denser, firmer texture that yields a lighter-than-the-pan color. I find slightly denser or firmer/stiffer brushes to be ideal for using with the Cream-Powders, as they pick up product better. Spot (227CP) is a soft black with a satin sheen. It built up to a slightly deeper, richer black hue, even though it had opaque coverage from the get go. It has a Cream-Powder formula, which means it had a denser, firmer, and almost stiffer consistency compared to the brand’s other eyeshadow finishes; it worked better with denser/firmer brushes as a result. I found the color easy to control, so it was nice for darkening other shades, and it had the blendability and pigmentation needed to work as a standalone shade as well.
