A Sparkling Wash of Taupe for Lids

Bobbi Brown Cement Sparkle Eyeshadow ($28.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “grey beige sparkle.” It’s a light-medium taupe brown with bits of silver, brown, and reddish-brown sparkle. I don’t know of anything quite as sparkly, but there are some shades that are similar in color (just not in finish). MAC Romance Me is darker. Chanel Harmonie du Soir is a bit darker. MAC Superwatt is browner. Urban Decay Midnight Rodeo is grayer. Bobbi Brown Sandy Rose is very similar in color.

I love the idea and concept of glittery, sparkling eyeshadows, but they don’t always translate well on the lid.  One of the biggest problems is the fall out that occurs while you wear it, so by the end of the day, half of it (and sometimes all of it!) is beneath your eye instead of on it. Bobbi Brown’s Sparkle formula is hit or miss for me, but Cement worked well (as far as this type of finish goes).  It wore for eight hours without creasing, but more importantly, the fall out was minimal.  There were a few stray, fallen sparkles, but not enough where it would be noticeable to the casual onlooker.

This is something I’d reserve for a special occasion, or a night out, so 8 hours really is a long time, LOL. Of course, if for some reason I had occasion to wear it longer, I’d definitely use a primer!

I love the look of glittery/sparkly shadow, but I just can’t deal with seeing errant sparkles on my face two days later. No matter what methods I use to try to remove the eye makeup carefully and thoroughly before washing the rest of my face, I ALWAYS end up with random sparkles in random places for the next 48 hrs. Drives me bananas.

I have this and I wear it a lot. It’s far more subtle than you would imagine. I frequently wear it on top of whatever colour I’ve got going on in the inner third of my eye. It brings a really nice pop. Yes, stray glitter after cleansing does drive me nuts too, but I have a magnifying mirror and just pick the pieces off with my tweezers. I also have this in the chocolate brown colour which is so pretty.

If I didn’t have a mental block on buying single eyeshadows, i’d definitely consider this. But for some reason it’s the one thing I only buy in palettes. Probably because I rarely wear it and palettes are a better value.

This would look great patted on the center of the lid of a neutral smokey eye look. Glad to see a nice base color (not just glitter) and decent wear time. Just not sure why it’s $28…? That seems more in line with ultra luxury brands than Bobbi. I think mid-range brands like BB and MAC need to keep their prices accessible if they want to be market leaders. Do they really want to be competing with Chanel, Guerlain, CdP?

It used to be cheaper, but they raised price/reduced quantity (I believe I mentioned it when I reviewed Bone a week or so ago) recently 🙁
