Barbie Loves Stila Cobalt Clutch & Purple Pumps Smudge Pot
Barbie Loves Stila Cobalt Clutch & Purple Pumps Smudge Pot ($20.00 each) are two of the three new smudge pot shades released with Stila’s Barbie Loves Stila Collection for the fall season. (Little Black Dress is the third shade–and it is on its way to me; as soon as I have it, you know I’ll be reviewing it!)
Purple Pumps is a shimmery shade of violet with a lighter violet-purple shimmer laced throughout the creamy gel liner. It is one of the sheerer smudge pots I’ve tested, but it can be layered for a more opaque look. I found layering was best achieved with a stiff, flat bristled brush (I used MAC’s 249).
Cobalt Clutch is a ridiculously vibrant shade of sea-water blue with a slight sky blue sheen (but more of a sheen than a shimmer). It goes on opaque without any need for layering, unlike Purple Pumps, and the shade is definitely intense. It will definitely look stunning as an eyeliner, but it could be used as a base for some really in-your-face eye color. (I am fairly certain it is the vibrant blue used in the Stila Smitten With Kitten Collection promotional image.)
I’ve always been a fan of Stila’s smudge pots. They’re smudgeproof, budgeproof, and wear all day without fading or creasing. They come in a variety of shades–one surely to entice you–and they’ll last you forever. I haven’t had any of mine dry out on me yet, either, which is a huge plus, because some gel liners have a tendency to dry out within a year.
- Product: 9/10
- Value: 8/10
- Ease of Use: 8/10
- Packaging: 8/10
Recommendation: These are not to be missed if you’re a gel liner fan (or a Smudge Pot fan in general!), because these are some bright-eyed shades you don’t see often.

I think you might have the wrong photos up! I only see the package picture! I’m excited to see these, the purple one sounds super gorgeous!
Yup, just 3 package pictures…
Fixed, thank you!
Fixed! Thanks Nadine!
the cobalt clutch smudge pot is to die for.
Argh, I know! So blue!
Based on the product previews the Purple Pumps and Cobalt Clutch is to die for. I think Cobalt Clutch will be a gorgeous base for MAC Submarine eyeshadow that came out with Naughty Nauticals last year.
I’m wondering how Cobalt Clutch will work as a solid base, just because it’s so intense!
omg! just imagine the cobalt smudge pot with mutiny pigment over top, or with the purple! to dieeeeeeeeeeeee for!!!!!
That sounds GORGEOUS!
Is Cobalt Clutch much different than the regular line shade Cobalt? I have that one, and this looks *maybe* a little lighter/brighter? I suppose I don’t need both. I was hoping to get the purple to use as a liner. Sheerness makes me hesitate, but it’s so pretty..
Judging by the picture of Cobalt Clutch, and my experience with the regular Cobalt, they’re two totally different colors!
Thanks for the swatches, Christine. I wish the Purple Pumps smudgepot was more pigmented and less sheer. 🙁 But the Cobalt Clutch one is gorgeous! I need it.
Thanks, Marilyn! I appreciate your help with the comparison 🙂
Yeah, if Purple Pumps was just a notch more pigmented… it’d be amazing! It’s still nice now, but it could definitely be better.
Hey Daphne,
I don’t have Cobalt, so I can’t compare, but hopefully a reader can! 🙂
Those are gorgeous, as expected, but neither of those shades fit with any look I’d consider trying for myself.
Little Black Dress, on the other hand, is expected to arrive tomorrow and I can’t wait to play with it!
I hope my LBD comes soon! It says it shipped… *crosses fingers*
i just came here to say i got little black dress and i loveeeee it. i like using regular black liner for everyday and the cute pink glitter in this smudgepot just made it a little more special and cute. i wanted all three of the smudgepots but i just ended up getting the palette and the one smudge pot.
Yay! Do you use it as liner or do you use it for something else? Stila says it’s shipped, but the tracking number is wonky, so I don’t know when it’ll get here yet, but I’m so anxious!
i just use it as a liner because as an eyeshadow it could be a little too loud (unless that is what you’re going for). also based on my own experience and others’ experience, the pink glitter falls a little as you wear it, so since i only wear it as a liner, the fallout is minimal. i think if you were to wear it as an eyeshadow, there would be much more fallout. but anyway i LOVE it!

Hey Sheryl,
Another reader commented that Cobalt Clutch was definitely a brighter shade of blue.
cobalt clutch was one of the bets makeup purchases of my life!
How have you been using it so far, Mariana? Share 😀
the blue is beautiful!
I know, so prettyyy!
these are beautiful
Glad you like ’em, Marina!
I just saw them in person the other day and they look amazing! I really want Little Black Dress.
Argh, I am hoping UPS hurries up with my LBD I bought over the weekend. *crosses fingers*
Pretty, I want Purple Pumps! I love purples =)
Me too 🙂
Love LBD! I’ve only used it for lining so far but it’s so pretty.
Now I am even MORE excited for mine to arrive!
Good Lord – that is pretty F***ING Bright hahaha – great for 80’s inspired makeup…I still want Cobalt Clutch probably not for work though
The 80s called and they want their blue back… 😉
LOL….makeup got to trend with fashion you know and the 80’s is comming back hard….
I’ve been waiting for a purple smudge pot forever!!! I just bought MAC push the edge pigment, so I don’t know if I can justify buying a purple smudge pot too….hmmmm.
It’s pretty, but it’s best as liner, otherwise the coverage is hard to get to be opaque!
WOW I like…
Do you think you’ll get either?
Good grief, I can just stare and stare at purple pumps.
lol, Tracy!
I bought Purple Pumps yesterday at Sephora and skipped Cobalt Clutch cos I thought it looked too much like Urban Decay’s Radium eyeliner. But today I used Radium and it looks like I’m running out. Looks like I might be purchasing CC after all. XD Thanks for the awesome swatches, by the way. <3
Haha! Glad you got Purple Pumps! have you used it yet?
No prob!
Hi all. the Stila Barbie eye shadows look fab. But when are the launching in the uk?
They aren’t 🙁
pretty but way too bright for me… (brunet and tan)
Aww, I think you could still wear it! 🙂
this wouldn’t be available internationally too 🙁
Unfortunately not 🙁
Have you seen Stila’s holiday set yet? They have four smudge pots, one in the tradtional jet black, two that look like (from the promo pics alone) purple pumps and cobalt clutch called violet and starry sky, respectively, and a new one called kitten. I’m really excited to see the kitten liner, since its done after the eyeshadow. Makes me curious to see what kind of look goes with champagne pink liner, hmmm….
Yep, I saw the email! Here’s my review on Kitten smudge pot… http://www.temptalia.com/stila-kitten-smudge-pot-black-cat-smudge-pot-kitten-lip-glaze-for-fall-2009-review-swatches-photos
going to sephora to find these today!!!!
Good luck!
So I NEED Cobalt Clutch….I was wanting Purple Pumps but now that I see a a swatch I’m kinda like ehhh. It’s pretty but not as bright as I would have liked.
