Are you prone to impulse beauty buying?
Are you prone to impulse beauty buying? Do you tend to buy more than you intended? How do you cope with impulse buying?
.
I actually do a lot of shopping online. I find that I’m rarely tempted by something strictly from online photos, but if you take me to a counter, I get all sorts of distracted by pretty things. I try to regularly window shop online and see what new things are out… and it sort of helps curbs the urge for impulses. I also try not to go to Nordstrom TOO often!
I really cant visit makeup and beauty websites. I could spend hours rationalizing with myself that I already have a similar shade or that I can already live without it so why purchase it. But after letting it simmer in my head, I jump back onto the site and going on a shopping frenzy. Its a bit different when I go to the store, I find myself not thinking too much about the product I need and just purchase anything I can get my hands on.
LOL! This sounds EXACTLY like me! I wish I could control myself sometimes, lol.
I would argue that all of my purchases are well-reasoned, carefully thought out and planned.
My postman, who has to carry it all to my door, probably disagrees.
My God, how many boxes have you been ordering?!
Im completely the other way around. If I want to buy, lets say from a new mac collection , online Ill buy everything. If I go in the store Ill look, but I wont buy as much. I think its because online it doesnt feel like a splurge (till it hits my front door) whereas, at the store I feel the packaging and see the number of items go up collectively. IDK, Maybe im just weird. lol!
I agree completely! In store I’m quite restrained but online I have no self control at all…
ah! yes! when i go to a mall i can sniff out a makeup/store in a heartbeat, even if the mall is completely new to me. but, online window shopping really does help i try to limit on the thing i should buy but it never fully works.
I do a lot of research before I go shopping, but once I see other products I am prone to impulse buys!
Yes. I am an impulse buyer. It gets really bad to the point where Ill browse online for makeup and find something that seems really cool—then ill research the product on youtube- watch the reviews then go back and buy it online. All without ever testing it for myself. And if I dont like something then Im doomed, cos I never return makeup I order online. Too much of a hassle.
I dunno how to cope. But makeup makes me look forward to getting up the next morning to try my new makeup, so I figure its all worth it. Thats my justification.
unfortunately yes 🙁 if im at an actual counter.
the other day i had a wishlist of 6 items i saw online and managed to talk myself out of all 6 items. but this doesnt happen when im at a counter. i end up buying something, anything lol!
im getting better tho!
Ohhhhh yes. Im the same way as you. I also do a lot of online shopping, but I try not to buy online until I can see something in stores, so Ive mostly got that under control. Sales are the worst though. Ive been guilty of impulse buying on online sales a lot. And then, when I get to the counter or to Sephora I usually end up buying more than I planned, lol. Everything looks way more pretty under those lights they have hahaha. I think making myself wait for swatches and reviews to form at least some kind of first impression before I go see an item in person has really helped, along with simply just not going to stores as often. Im working on a very low-buy currently and Im happy to report its been going pretty well though I did allow myself a modest reward for finishing my last three grad school/fellowship apps and getting my first two interviews.
😀
I, too, always window shop online so I have an idea of what I want and I also check your reviews before heading out to MAC! All those colours and products are so tempting! In this way, I can check my collection if I already have a dupe for it or if its needed to boost my variety.
When Im at make-up stores/counters I always ask myself:
Do I need this?
Do I have a dupe for it?
Will it add variety to my collection?
Doesnt seem to decrease the amount of time at these places though! One time while shopping with my best friend, we spent 2/3 of our time looking at makeup (MAC Pro and Sephora!). We still joke about it and aim to never do that again. XD
I am prone to impulse buying with mostly anything, but especially with beauty products!! Its so easy to get wrapped up in the new collections when youre at the department stores! I agree that researching and buying online helps to curb the urges. Its hard when its so fun to try new products and colors though!
On occasion, but for the most part no. I research online, get an idea of what i want, go swatch it, then maybe buy. Or I see the color in store, like it, write it down, and over going back another few times I see if i still like it. I dont usually buy a product Ive seen on my hand less than 3 times.Plus, it makes it easier to go home, and double check that I dont have any similar colors in the collection already.
nope.not for cosmetics at least. I usually only purchase items that i had been wanting for awhile.Sometimes I actually decide that i want thisthisthis from the mac collection, but when i go to the store and see the real item.Ill come to the conclusion that I can actually do without this product after all.
Definitely! I dont think Ive ever gone out and not bought something! Haha.
Sadly, I am. I never really buy tons at the higher end counters because Im a teenager with a tiny budget, but then I end up buying too much drugstore makeup.
Prior to MUA, I used to be! But now I see something(s) I like – I start a list and brng it home – put it on my wishlist, and see if swappers have it. It is funny, though…when I shop with my mom, I see just how impulsive she is!
At least when I go into Sephora I put whatever I want in my basket, walk around for a good long time until the impulse passes. Then I look at whats in there, calculate the cost and decide whats going to go back on the shelves. 🙂
Yes, I am. But nowadays, I go to the department store less, and even if I go, I wouldnt go near my favorite brands counter. 🙂
Unfortunately, I am very guilty of this. That is why I have a whole closet full of unopened items. Impulse buying has caused me to buy more than I will ever use. However, like you, I have beguen to do more internet shopping and it really has curbed my impulse buying. I have started to wait to hear reviews on here and other sites before I buy. The sales people at the store are so convincing that you REALLY need this item, its like no other. Then when I get home I have 10 others just like it!
Im the opposite, I buy less in store than online, as I will test things and see they might not suit me, or I will try to find a better deal online anyway. But especially on eBay I will buy far too much if theres a good deal even if I dont need them that much. (Lets face it, how much make up do you actually really need? ;))
I can tend to do a lot of that if theres a sale. eg. The Body Shop or Sephora. I try to go less often to avoid this. Sometimes promotions will come up, so thats even more temptation to just get something.
I find that a list helps….problem is my list is a mile long…LOL! It really depends on how much money I have….Ive been trying to stay away from Sephora and MAC for the rest of the month, since the MAC Spring Colour Forcast collection is my BIG thing coming up. Its so hard….I feel like Im on a makeup diet….
Yeah man that’s what I should be doing now! I shouldn’t be buying any MAC at all right now! I need to save up for the Spring Color Collection at least, but maybe I have some psychological issue going on right now with my MAC impulse buying! LOL Their lippies have a hold on me these days!
I am totally weak, especially if one of the forums posts a sale!!
Nope. It happens, but rarely. I plan most of my beauty purchases ahead of time, so I don’t usually buy on impulse.
Bigtime prone to impulse makeup purchases! I also tend to become slightly obsessed with certain items, i.e. after buying one Rouge Volupte lipstick, I felt I had to have 4 or 5 of them, even though the colors weren’t the easiest to work with. And yes, I realize this is a problem, lol.
I check on here and a few other sites to make little lists of things I think I am likely to buy from collections I like (current list is Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland book of shadows. If I see it in the UK when it is out, I am just going to buy it! Also on the hit list is Liberty of London MAC lipstick, probably ever hip, a lipglass likely to be perennial high and maybe an eyeshadow, blush and bag.If I plan it, it isn’t an impluse right?!) I always, always have to rationalise it with myself so don’t often impulse buy, apart from the sales! Half price YSL palette d’artiste face palette that I had really wanted!
Ever since I had started watching makeup gurus on youtube.com and learning from them on the different products out there in the market, I have been prone to buy makeup! It’s not a need but a want! lol.
I’m only prone to impulse beauty buying if I’m having a bad day and happen to be passing by a MAC counter, then I’ll buy a lipstick or a lipgloss to cheer myself up. Instant gratification!
Reading through the posts, I feel like this is a blog for Makeup Addicts Anonymous! Well duh! I tend to buy makeup when I am feeling down about myself. That’s obviously not good. What I’ve learned is, if I go to Nordstroms I’m much more likely to buy makeup because the sales staff are sooo helpful and nice and don’t leave your side till you’ve made your decision. However if I go to Sephora, I tend to try a lot of swatches on my hands and play around more.
I don’t buy any makeup on line, besides the Chanel Jade purchase and Chanel Particuliere (which I thought was sold out, but apparently as of yesterday it’s totally availible at stores.)
I’ve bought makeup before on Ebay, but I seriously doubt the authenticity.
When I go to a drug store and actually have some free money to spend, which is rare, I have gone after their sale makeup with a vengeance before. That’s probably the only reason why I own Prestige.
I’ve decided on a cash only rule: I will only use cash to pay for beauty products when I’m in store. Usually I go and only bring a certain amount of money with me (what I was planning to get, plus an extra forty dollars or so), so I get what I came for, but I can also get myself a couple of impulsive treats.
Online, I feel bombarded with things I just plain WANT, so I put all the things I want most in my shopping cart and then do a process of elimination until my total is under a certain amount.
Sometimes, though, I make no-reason trips to Sephora or MAC (I have very few permanent items from any one brand). With MAC, I have a list of things I’ve given priority to, and I usually keep it in mind very successfully. At Sephora, though, I can and will take hours to decide on what I want.
I’m sorta of like you! my sister says i shop online too much, but really I’m not buying, I’m just window shopping. lol I think its better online b/c with your website you have all these swatches, videos & reviews!
It really helps! yesterday my mom needed to get some eyeshadows pans, so i said i know temptalia’s site will have it thank you!
My pleasure 🙂
I buy alot! But most of it is not
I’mpulse buys. I check out your site or emails I get from Dior
and ysl mac sephora..and then do research
then I order
when I go to the store it usu because I need to really see the color
but I’m a sephora girl and they are great with returns
lipstick and eyeshadows have to be special..
Really how many shades of the same thing can u make !
I have alot
Cheaper than therapy….I think 🙂
In the store it’s when I see something brand new that catches my eye generally and on-line mainly if there is Free Shipping or a 20% off sale I tend to indulge. I love trying new shades formulas, different looks. Some people tend to always wear the same thing/look but I find that boring (for me anyway). I know some people who I swear where the same makeup whether they are taking out the garbage or going to a Black Tie event!
It’s terrible – several hundred dollars in makeup every month. Wardrobe and shoes are pretty cheap in comparison. I can wear $30 shoes with my $30 lipstick. I once got a raise by arguing how many Chanel lipsticks they were depriving me of every year by not giving me what I was promised.
Wow! Are you a comedienne? LOL
1. I’d flip that and get more expensive clothes and shoes LOL Hey MAC is less than Chanel.
2. Who do you work for? LOL
Sadly I have been buying on impulse lately, and worse now that before! LOL. I never buy make up online because I don’t want the wrong color, but I’ve been buying a lot of MAC lately partially because I didn’t want to miss out on certain items from LE colllections and partially because I’ve changed my mood toward make up slightly, meaning I’ve changed my opinions towards what colors and finishes I want to wear now.
It’d be cheaper just to be a mascara and lipgloss person, or someone who just wears neutral make up all the time.
I went through an addiction of MAC make-up and going to Sephora like everyweek almost all of last year. I can easily say that I raked up a $5K debt by doing this. I am not sure what happened but all of a sudden became attracted to buying make-up and impulsed on it badly. I would even buy the same thing up to 2-3 times, often forgetting that I had already purchased that same item. I couldn’t keep up with my own inventory. I felt like I had just discovered make-up. Now, I’ve reached my wits-end and no longer am on this spending frenzy, thank goodness!
