Storage Solutions - Skyler Shares Her MAC Pigment Storage Solution
Skyler tells us about her very enviable storage solution…
I call this my “Personalized MAC Pigment/Glitter Rack.”
I have an extremely handy grandfather, Doug, and I approached him in the summer about making me a customized pigment rack. I had searched high and low for one to buy, on eBay and otherwise, but nothing suited my needs (or my wallet). They were either too big or too small, too ugly or too cheap. Since I knew Doug, a woodworker, had made tons of furniture for my family members over the years, I figured a pigment rack would not be out of his range. Of course, he had no idea what the hell a pigment was but he was very willing to make it for me. I wanted something high-quality, sturdy, easily accessible, and something that could withstand my day-to-day use. I wanted to be able to see each pigment colour as well. I gave him a rough blueprint and he ran with it. He measured the cut-outs with an actual pigment jar and I asked for additional spots so that my collection could grow and still fit into the unit.
To take a peek inside,
In the pictures, it is not hanging, but it has two hooks so that you can be mounted on a wall. The doors are frosted glass with wood behind, but that is also hard to see in the pictures. I have my glitters on the left panel and any vials I have sit in the pockets on the right, with all of my regular and PRO pigments in the middle. Because it is all wood (I think pine), it is extremely sturdy. It is by far the best part of my make-up collection. I am a huge pigment and glitter collector, and I really needed something customized for this obsession of mine. My grandfather was able to turn the blueprint into a dream come true and I will never be able to repay him. I am so happy with it and it is so much easier picking colours out in the morning now. Before it was a mess because I had so many that I ran out of space for them, and they ended up in Ziploc bags. It took forever to find anything! This solved all of my storage problems. You can even turn the pigments upside down if you rather the label side than going by colour. 🙂
WOW! I really mean super WOW! What a wonderful grandfather you have 🙂 I really think or hope you share this series of posts with him, because this is my addition to the virtual pat on the back. He honestly did a truly AMAZING job with this setup. It looks beautiful, useful and like a lot of time, effort, and love went into it.Right now I sure am wishing I had my own Doug!! AND OMG do you have a ton of pigments and glitters 🙂 LOL you are better stocked than the MAC store itself. What do you plan on putting on the varied level shelves on the right?
I wish I was better stocked than the MAC store. 😉 My collection still requires quite a few additions.
Right now I have pigment/glitter vials in one of the side shelves. I honestly don’t know what else to put in them at the moment (because most things you have to see before pulling out), but I’m sure I’ll come up with something!
I’d like to show Doug these comments, to show him how many people admire his work. Thank you! 🙂
wow! You know what..I bet Skyler’s grandfather wanted, he could sell a couple of these on eBay and make a FORTUNE. There are always girls who are looking to store their pigments. Plus, this cabinet is very aestheically pleasing in addition to functional! *envy*
Doug has always insisted workworking ‘just a hobby’ for him. He could be raking in tons of money with the kind of furniture he makes but he is a humble guy and insists he just enjoys side projects for family and friends. 🙂 He’s a great and humble guy. But yes, I admit… he could make a fortune selling these pigment racks. I wonder if this infringes upon any of MAC’s rights since it’s specifically made to hold their items. 😛
Thats so cool, and handy. Your grandfather rocks!
That is amazing!!! Such a wonderful idea!
WOW! *stares in awe*
That is such an awesome case!! I too have been looking hi and lo for something to see my pigments easier. I may have to show these pics to my husband’s *handy* uncle!!! Thanks for the idea!!!
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how great it looks!!!!
how many pigments inside 😀
great grandpa!!!!
my boyfriend also promised to try and make something similar for me 😀 he has some time to practice,i only have about 8 pigments.
thanks for sharing,it is really inspiring!!!!
no wonder then, that You have sooooooooooo many great color combos in your head :-DDD
111 You have,right????
Hah, you know what? I don’t even know! There are glitters in there too. Since then, I’ve added about 8 new ones. I only got heavily into pigments about a year ago but once I learned of their colour payoff and versatility, I started collecting ’em all. 🙂 I hope your boyfriend makes you something fabulous too!
i can imagine You going in the MAC store and saying: “Give me all the new babies, and don’t waste my time, the old ones are waiting for me at home.So many great combos,so little time!” 😀
yes,the colour payoff is just amazing.
i think L’oréal are copying our babies with this HIP,high intensity pigment line. even the boxes are similar, but sure they can’t compare.
Wish i had one a those. You trully are blessed to have the grandfather that u have. Dam you are one lucky girl.
This is so impressive!! Doug and Skyler, you are an amazing team!
OMG OMG OMG What a beautiful rack1 Hes so talented
wow that’s an awesome collection!
I don’t know what I’m more in awe of, your amazing collection or your amazing grandfather! Thanks for sharing.
Thats awesome, good work Doug!!
I’m super jealous…of the shelf and of the pigments themselves!
wow i love it!!
Hot dang! I don’t suppose he can make one for everyone? 😉
That looks GORGEOUS! What a lot of work he put into that for you. Enjoy it!
OH. MY. GOD!!! I AM SO JEALOUS!!! WOW!!! SUPER WOW!!!
oh my god i just noticed- the shelves are tilted for easy access!!! there is no other word but wow. i am amazed!!!!!!!!!
Yes, seeing the jars head on would have made the colours a bit hard to see. So he slanted the shelves to make it easier to see and more accessible (for my hands). 🙂
Wow! Your Grandpa’s just amazing!
WOW…Is Doug looking to adopt another grandaughter? 😉
Sklyer, i love the fact that a little bit of your Grandpa will stay with you forever because that rack will last you a lifetime!
And if one day, many years from now, you’re not really into MAC Pigments anymore, you’ll be able to find another use for it!
I love it!
That is a really nice thing to say, Peri. Thank you. And I completely agree. 🙂
WOW is right. Your grandfather is very skilled & obviously did his best for you. I don’t even own one pigment but seeing his work makes me want to run out & buy some.
Thanks so much for posting my storage solution, Christine! It was wondering hearing all of the comments and I will be sure to pass them along to Doug. He’ll be floored his work is so admired because he is such a humble person. It will make his day. 🙂
Er, wonderful. 😛
Beautiful work, and beautiful pigments! What a pleasure it would be to open that every morning and see all the glittering colours! 🙂
amazing! i can’t find other words!!!
That is amazing!! I LOVE THAT!! You are such a lucky girl. If your grandfather ever decides to market that, let me know. I’d definitely make a purchase. He could really make a killing off of that.
Again, you are one lucky girl!!
