Temptalia Asks You - What's your biggest makeup pet peeve?
What’s your biggest makeup pet peeve? Clumpy mascara? Mismatching foundation?
.
Foundation that doesn’t match. I am currently struggling with this issue — stupid face being darker than my neck!
.
.
Question courtesy of HoneyBrown! 🙂
Apart from discontinued HG products it’d have to be eyeshadow in ziplock baggies… why! why! why!
Oh an,… ORANGE FOUNDATION! haha, 🙂
mismatch foundation, unflattering eye makeup shades, unflattering lipstick shades, and people who only use q-tips to apply shadow.
Sponge applicators coming with palettes (c’mon, Urban Decay, you can do better!)
But definitely too yellow foundation. I’ve got yellow undertones and NC from MAC is too yellow for me. Oh, life! XD
You ask the best questions, Christine!
Nora – I have yellow undertones to my skin too & also was not able to wear the MAC NC colors. I had to go with the NW colors & those are perfect for me so you may want to give them a try.
Ridiculous prices in Australia is by FAR my biggest peeve. The big brands have the market cornered here and now it’s as if it’s normal to pay over $70 for an eyeshadow or something. It’s insane.
My general pet peeve is women who wear too much makeup. Natural looks so much better on basically everyone.
Clumpy mascara is my biggest pet peeves ever! Mismatched foundation is my other biggest pet peeves.
people who tell me i’m superficial because i wear makeup. 😛
or that i’m trying to compensate for a self-esteem issue?
and cakey foundation. ewww!
patchy/flakey foundation, it always looks rather strange 🙁
Non blended makeup and too much blush! Those are 2 things I struggle with.
twinz! omg, harsh lines from eyeshadow, foundation, or …ew….bronzer, just makes me wish i carried my brushes at all time to blend that sh** out. and cakey makeup. darlins’ if i can touch your face and do MY makeup from whatever i got on my fingers, it is TOO much.
I hate mascara that runs or smudges– with the technology these days companies that put out smeary mascara should know better! I also hate when powder settles into my pores.
non-matching foundation (soon I’ll have to buy another one when I start to get more sun in the spring and summer), chipped nail polish(is there really a such thing as a 7 day manicure on natural nails?), flaky/clumpy mascara, concealer settling in my fine lines, unflattering lipsticks and lipglosses( I’m currently going through everything I own and giving it the “test”, whatever doesn’t pass will be given away), eyeshadows that have no color payoff
Oh man, I hear you on the concealer bit. I have tried different formulations of concealer (thicker, thinner, stick, wand, cream), and applying powder overtop using different brushes/methods, but I still manage to have that same problem. It drives me crazy, esp since it ages me.
And yes as well to the no colour payoff with eyeshadows – this is why I don’t buy drugstore anymore. It just isn’t worth the money. If I wanted talc, I would buy talc.
Mascara that is hard to remove. And people critisizing my makeup hobby!
Too dark foundation, definitely. And high school girl makeup. All the girls I know wear dark black liner, clumpy black mascara, and the same shimmery silver-blue shadow every single day. Mix it up, and compliment your outfit, please!
oh my god, I know what you mean!
bugs the crap out of me
Definitely foundation!!! Here in Norway every high school girl and +++ put on too dark founfation! THEY LOOK ORANGE!!! And the same goes for light foundation and not matching your neck!
I have the same problem as you Christine
Not just foundation that’s too dark but foundation that’s been slathered on and not blended out so you can see it caked on the skin. And really obvious blush.
For me personally, it’s mascara smudges on my upper lid. Bleh, my eyelashes are so short, it’s really tough to avoid.
Makeup that you’ve carefully, lovingly applied that disappears ten minutes after application. Why bother? (Thank goodness for primers and Fix+!)
I soo hate clumpy mascara looks like spider legs… too pale/ too orange foundation thank god for mac girls picken it out for me… buying a great lipstick then finding it dosnt work on u… and foundation settlin throughout the day and lookin all creassy on my face uuggghh
Foundation that doesn’t match the neck/face color, foundation that’s too pink, makeup that’s not blended, dark eyes+lips (the goth look, sorry! 🙁 ), fake tans that look super fake, glitter EVERYWHERE — to name a few.
I do have to say that I was guilty of some of the foundation ones but that was when I was on the search for the perfect shade for me. Thank god for NC40!
my experience has been that a lot MUAs (at least in dept stores) do not know how to do women of color. either they do no color or too much color
All over lid color.
Or how mac ma’s always give
Ethnic (black) women amber lights
Eyeshadow, sweet as cocoa blush, and oh baby! Lipgloss.
I hate that ugh!
Say it again!! Mix it up MUAs!!! It’s like they have a template!
Say it again!! Mix it up MUAs!!! It’s like they have a template!
Drives me crazy to see women with black eyeliner on as lip liner with bright red lipstick… I just wanna wipe they’re lips off!!!
Definitely mismatched foundation! I’m having issues with it right now too. My neck is darker than my face, but my face is the same shade as the rest of my body (I was at an outdoor concert festival last year and it messed up my once pale skin forever hahaha oh man. never again!) People who don’t comb out their lashes after applying mascara get to me too. It completely ruins a look if your lashes are all clumped together and gross. ):
Foundation that breaks out 10 minutes after application, eye make up that takes half an hour to create yet doesn’t look pretty on me.
Biggest peeve ever – when companies tell you “colours specially formulated for Asian skin”. Asians come in alll shades; however, most major makeup companies in Asian countries carry very limited shades – say between 5-6 and usually pink-based for cool undertones; the plethora of shades seen on the international websites are usually Missing In Action in our counters (I actually went to several established brands and checked). Thankfully, MAC did not go that way too and I managed to find my shade there (I’m an NC 43). On a related note, another peeve is foundation and powders that oxidise to an odd, ashy dirty shade … thats why its so important to get the correct shade for skintones like mine =)
I think that peeve can go through all women of color : ( . We definitely get the short end of the make-up stick and it stinks.
The “oval of blush” (when people wear blush in a large egg shape that covers the area from the tops of their cheekbones down to the hollows of their cheeks and all the way from apple of the cheek to hairline. BLEND, PEOPLE!!! I don’t care WHERE you put your blush, but blend it!
Or maybe unblended makeup in general.
Miss matched foundation drives me nuts. I seem to have the opposite problem of other commenters. My face is darker than the rest of my skin naturally (I have freckles and redness but the rest of my body doesn’t have this). I also hate lipsticks that make the lines in my lips extremely noticeable. Sponge tip applicators!!! Can’t stand them! Also it drives me nuts when girls put on makeup and its super messy (its very unprofessional and trashy looking).
I have a pet peeve with foundation not matching or being way too cakey. I also HATE when i see girls wearing WAY too much blush. I love blush as much as any girl does but there’s no need to look like a clown. My number one pet peeve has to be, people not being sanitary with their products. I know girls that have owned brushes for over a year n NEVER once cleaned them. Or have had one tube of mascara for over a year too n never thrown it out. Foundations they sometimes still use that they bought in high School n they’re now in their mid 20s. Things like that really just gross me out. THESE things have so much bacteria build up n they r being used on ur skin!
I have a new pet peeve that has really been getting under my skin lately and that’s how many brands have started to use cardboard box packaging like benefit, almay and pur minerals. Ugh I absolutely hate them. I think they are so inconvenient and paying $20+ for something in cardboard is ridiculous. It really frustrates me.
I hate it when I can’t seem to pencil my eyebrow hairs and I end up with an overdone brow with all the color on the skin, not the hairs… I also hate it when my mascara flakes at the ends of lashes when I touch them (I have a strange habit of running my fingertips over my lashes), and when eyeliner smears. I HATE it when I can’t get a straightforward answer about how much makeup I wear. My mom and sister always say my makeup makes me look like a whore, but when I ask my friends, they say that my makeup makes me look pretty and that I look completely normal. I think my family thinks I look like a whore because they’ve seen the difference between the COMPLETELY-natural-just-woke-up version of me and made-up me, and my friends have only seen the made-up version of me. I think I look good with my normal amount of makeup. Christine, has anybody ever told you that you had too much makeup on? I think you wear just the right amount.
I also hate it when girls just wear one color of eyeshadow on their eyes, a swipe of liner on their waterline, and cheap drugstore mascara – seriously, ladies, you can do a better job of making yourself up! Be creative!
hello hi,
i used to have an issue with the colour sticking to the skin and not the eyebrow hair until i switched to MAC’s Browset (Bobbi Brown’s is called Natural Brow Shaper) – they’re like Mascara but for eyebrows and they do the job great. Fantastic especially when you’re in a hurry cos you just comb the formula on.
Ah man, that’s my makeup look for everyday…
At least I can feel better that I put some extra effort into special occasion looks. I don’t like doing more than one or two shades on my eyes for everyday because I work in hospitality and want to look professional.
Biggest makeup pet peeve – BAD BROWS. Then.. messy makeup. If you can’t do makeup, that’s fine, just don’t try to do it. Stick to: foundation, cream blush, mascara, and gloss.
my pet peeve would be girls with completely shaved-off eyebrows and just draw a thin line with their brow pencils as their brows. That’s scary.. and too much blush/not blended blush.
when you apply makeup one day and it looks amazing, then the next day you use the exactly same method- and it doesn’t look as good, the blush is to bright, the foundation isn’t blended etc…..I hate that! also mascara that doesn’t go on nice and clump free, then you lashes looks all spidery and gross.
foundation that just doesn’t last good-looking. Seriously, everyday when by the time I get home my foundation has reacted with my oily skin and looks terrible. No matter how good quality the foundation is!
When people don’t blend foundation and they get the line of demarkation. I get that sometimes we buy foundation that may be a shade or two off from what we actually should be wearing due to covering up of certain things or using up the last of something from summer or winter in an off season, but BLEND IT. BLEND BLEND BLEND.
Unblended, or crummily blended eye shadow. Unblended looks unfinished and sloppy. Crummy blending ends up looking like mud on ones eyes.
I guess unblended anything. Blush, shadow, highlighter, foundation…whatever. If it’s not blended correctly, it looks icky, imo.
Bad eyebrows. If you’re not sure how to do them yourself, go get it done by a pro. It’s not that expensive!
Bad lip liner. Just…no. Black eye liner does not equate lip liner.
Spider lashes. They make lash combs for a reason!
And this is totally not makeup wearing related, but it’s makeup buying related. If you’re at MAC, Sephora, whatever and using the testers, don’t use it straight out of the tester, use the testing brushes/sponges/applicators provided. That’s so unsanitary and gross. Also, don’t be sticking your fingers in things. That’s gross too.
yeah but u can swipe some on our hand with your finger like in eyeshadows and blushes to see the color pigmentation payoff and what it feels like, b/c sorry but the stupid cutips they give u to test on just dont cut it.
I guess I just don’t like people sticking their fingers into something that I’m going to test. It’s VERY unsanitary. You may wash your hands before going in there, but I’m guessing not everyone does. I just personally don’t really want to be testing something on my eyes or around my mouth that 2343448945430 people have dipped their fingers in.
I hate it when i see older woman with super thin eyebrows that just looked drawed on and since im in middle school i notice that so many girls at my school wear foundation that makes their skin look orange or they put ten pounds on their face so it looks unntural and they dont blend it at all!!
Thanks for the shout-out, Christine!
I agree with mismatched foundation that make women chalky or ashy. Also, the drawn-on eyebrows I’ve seen on some women. Stop the insanity!
Chunky Glitter eyeshadows, Bright blue eyeshadow with bright red lips, orange foundation or foundation that looks good when you put it on and then looks like crap or disappears 10 min. later. Unblended eyeshadow, Dirty makeup sponges and brushes, foundation that doesn’t match. When your eyeliner disappear off of your waterline and collects in the corner of your eye!!!
Definitely clumpy mascara. Drives me NUTS! And when you have that one lash that sticks straight out, even after curling it. BAH!
foundation not matching is an issue sometimes too. my skin decides to change color often so I had to buy 2 different colors.
Girls who only wear ten pounds of bronzer and black eyeliner!
Theres so much more to makeup than that!
i can’t believe this hasn’t been said more, but my biggest pet peeve is eyeliner smudging. it always sits in the crease below my eye.
ME TOO! That’s totally and completely mine!! It alwasy ends up fluttered across my cheekbone (its very high) yet somehow I have to scrub and scrub to get it off my eye.. what gives, eyeliner??
If your bottom liner is smudging on you, after you apply it set it with an eyeshadow. It will help keep the liner in place! HTH
I hate hate haaaaaaaaate when people ignore their brows, wether it be they aren’t just filling it in or they are not tweezing or whatever.. ahhhhhh!!
i hate it when u are at the mac counter looking at all the colors and the MA comes up to u and asks u if u need anything, and u say no, but they still stand right next to u while u look, its like hello, give me some space , ill tell u when i need help, just let me play.
i also hate gross tasting lipstick, like urban decay, i once got a sample and man YUCK! it tasted like plastic rubber, i couldnt wait to get it off my lips. thank god MAC has good tasting lipstick and bare essentuals has great buxom lipgloss that tingles in a good minti way.
girls that use black eyeliner as eyeshadow. seriously, you might as well take a sharpie and draw on your eyelids so it stays on forever. i also hate it when people wear makeup that is completely wrong for the occasion. i knew a girl who wore full-face, huge lashes, thick foundation, cherry lipstick everyday at work. i worked at an electronics store. i swear she scared away half our customers.
Maybe she had discolourations or a skin condition that she wanted to cover up or felt insecure about? Besides, it takes effort to do a full face and lashes; at least got to give her some credit for taking time and effort to present herself in a way she thought was good. Wouldnt it be worse if she turned up at work looking like a sloppy slob with strawberry jelly donut crumbs on her face and coffee stains on her clothes? =)
Harsh lines when people do their eyeshadows!!!!!!!!!
When people don’t blend right
I can never find foundation that is pale enough for me, but not white. the same problem with powder. MAC’s stuff is too dark, Lancome comes close, oddly, CoverGirl has the closest match.
I hate cakey foundation, do people really need to layer that much stuff on their face?
not to mention the unblended look that so many sport. 🙁
I don’t like really heavy eye makeup during the day…it looks gross and inappropriate.
I don’t like orange faces or orange bodies for that matter!
I don’t like fake eyelashes as an every day occasion. Hello drag queen!
My personal grievances with makeup–foundation that only lasts 2 hours! and how its so hard to find the perfect shade! loose eyeshadows–too messy! mineral everything–is this necessary? MAC making everything good Limited edition! I hate that!
For me it’s:
– mismatched foundation
– eyeliner that ends up in the corner of eye or disappear
– foundation that is not blended onto the neck and end up looking like the person is wearing a dark mask on her face
– m/u products that have barely any pigmentation
– m/u products that stink (especially lip products cuz they are so close to the nose…)
– glitter chunks that are too big/chunky that they don’t adhere to the skin and just flake off
I think my biggest makeup pet peeve right now is foundation finish. I can’t seem to get one that is a balance between so shiny I need to apply lots of translucent powder to finish, and so matte I look like a dried up mud puddle with all the cracks. I think the trick might be a good primer, but I am trying not to put so many layers of stuff on my face.
That, and how my matte2 eyeshadow doesn’t stick to my eye. I want that huge pop of colour, but it wipes right off when I try to blend. Boo.
my pet peeve is cakey make-up. you know the stuff that looks great from afar but up close like something you need a chisel to remove. I am so afraid of what those women’s skin looks like underneath. Isn’t that heavy and itchy to wear all day?
i hateee cakey foundation. or like when you put it on and it looks perfect, but when when you go look at your face later it looks nasty and cakey. stupid oily skin.
and when people wear super heavy eye makeup with super dark lips. balance is key! and when people wear like 6 inches of eyeliner.
i can’t stand how a lot of the older girls at my school look so orange. it’s like really….being orange is not attractive.
when shadows come out with almost a chalky texture..ewww
when your foundation somehow makes you look freaking “tanorexic”
clumpy mascara
when you wear a bunch of colors and they all run together
or since I work at a Starbucks
let me list the stuff customers have caught my attn with…..oh lord
the old ladies with the nasty ass perfume that resembles bug spray *gag* or old ladies trying to wear eyeliner..again gross
the little 13 year old girls that come in giggling with glitter caked eyelids…lord
the super bright color on the super tan skin that they seriously can’t pull off
the women with the seriously scary fluffy/poofy/frizzed out hair with some retardedly bright blue/teal/aqua eyeliner on
the super long acrylic nails with the god awful desgins on them
hmm I think I’m done..but I work tomorrow I’ll see what else freaks me out tomorrow LOL
