The most I ever paid was $38 for a Chanel Rouge Coco in Mademoiselle back in 2019. Now that it costs $45, I am not sure if I will replace it when I finally run out, as much as I love it. Apart from that, I am reluctant to pay above $25, especially with all the high quality drugstore lipsticks available.

I can’t remember the highest amount I’ve paid for a lipstick but if the quality and color selection is good, I don’t mind paying more. The most expensive lipstick in my train case is probably Tom Ford, and I do think the price is worth it because of the rich shades and it wears for hours on my lips. The only brand I refuse to buy is Christian Louboutin because it’s ridiculous and I’ve never seen any good reviews on it. Next would be Chanel and it’s always worth it, although I don’t really find the price that high to begin with. Also, I just paid $100 for two Dior lipsticks for summer…..Hydrating Shine Refillable in 877 Becoming Pink, which is a bright lovely pink for summer evenings. I also bought 976 Be Dior which is a more sheer medium pink for daytime. Both shades are perfect. I did well in choosing them lol.

Um…$30? Honestly I don’t think lipstick should cost more than $20, unless they have ridiculous packaging. (And I don’t mean Isamaya “ridiculous.”)
Looking through my vanity, the most expensive formulas I own that approach the $30 mark are actually mini sample sizes (I guess some arguably cost ≥$100 in Sephora points? lol) and/or were gratis while I worked at Ulta. Only a few really cost me more than $20 pre-tax.

I don’t mind paying a little more for a lipstick, because I so rarely finish them and need to repurchase. Also, because I’ll usually reapply throughout the day, nice packaging and user experience are a little more important for me than with something I wouldn’t pull out of my purse like foundation, for example. That being said, I’m most comfortable in the $20-30 range at the most, but I’ll go higher for something really special.

Generally, I prefer under $20.
Under $30, if it’s very very good and will be used often.
Maybe up to $38, if it’s perfectly performing with a color that looks amazing on me that’s also very hard to dupe.

Lipstick: BITD, before Sephora, etc. you went to counters. DS was pretty unacceptable, even for HS age people. The pre-Nars era, when French Dior/Chanel dominated, Shiseido was just emerging stateside. Marcella Borghese and Elizabeth Arden were the lesser expensive counter brands. You bought Dior or Chanel, after saving up, and wore those colors into the ground. Tarte/tf were not options. Higher end or sucky drugstore. Confessing to wearing the Revlon OG Naked Pink, lol. Now DS has vastly improved and the price along with it. DS is quite good. For HE, I have some Pats and a mini TF, Why pay a hefty price tag, when CP brings you stunners like Gallop? Right, Genevieve?

Exactly kjh -I bought a mini set from Pat and it was just awful, the lipsticks tugged and just about wrecked my lips. Never again.
Gallop, Foolish, Tea Thyme, Party Mix are my absolute favourites from CP and you just can’t go past the quality.

Bearing in mind that I’m in Canada where the higher price for cosmetics is pretty much unconscionable, I’d say maybe $35 or, if I could find MAC Craving (which I did find at Winners a while ago for $9.99 and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t buy ALL of them), maybe $45.

$90 CAN for Hermes I guess is the most I have paid. I try not to do that too often though but to me, you can’t beat Hermes

Apart from DS lipsticks, all other brand lippies are just so, so expensive here in Aus. And I just refuse to buy them.
Generally the most I will pay for a lipstick is around the $20-25 mark, but mostly I pay around $10-15, because the brands I choose to buy from are relatively inexpensive and just as good as HE brands.
I purchase Maybelline here locally (when on sale), Shiseido from an online Australian retailer – when on sale and CP – their lux lipstick range is fabulous.

Was a time I bought Ford and Chanel and Dior ls and they were expensive then and still are. Now? Nah I wouldn’t spend $60 for a lipstick. Truth be told I’ve seen swatches of Byredo and Hermes and I’m not impressed.

Helene Avatar

I really can’t say.
The most expensive I have bought must be Tom Ford, it’s a lovely quite unique one and that’s just it, I do pay more for uniqueness, though I don’t think I’d go Loubutin (sp?) high, ever.
I guess I’d go as high as $50 but then it would either have to have the best formula ever (moisturizing yet stay in place for hours and hours), or be quite unique.

I have paid 520SEK for a lipstick which is almost $50. At times I have been able to buy similarly expensive ones at a discount, but this still feels ridiculously high and like the company just slapped on the price tag to look exclusive. Especially when these lipsticks (LE Chanel for example) are NOT better quality than some lipsticks in more reasonable price ranges.
When I do buy expensive lipsticks it’s with the excuse that I want to try and review every lipstick brand there is for my own blog, but I am getting more and more disappointed for the above reasons and have started to hold back more and choose other brands and lipstick series.

I just cannot see paying more for a lipstick than $30 unless it has extremely special packaging or a OOAK color. Maybe I just have not tried the right HE brand but mid price range works for me. if someone demonstrated the quality to be very different, e.g. it actually made my lips (Semi) permanently bigger or had repairing, moisturizing qualities, maybe?
