Do you enjoy beauty-related video content?

I’ve moved away from consuming beauty-related video content outside of whatever is necessary to stay in the loop, and I wouldn’t say I consumed a lot prior either. Like on TikTok, I’ve just decided no beauty at all for me! I just want to enjoy it as a social media platform.

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Yes, I do! I still miss your youtube videos – the how to’s and the reviews of new launches and that exciting music intro (it always suggested to me that exciting things were coming…and they always were!). I don’t do other stuff like Tik Tok or Instagram but I still love youtube videos because I sort of get the sense that I “know” the youtubers (for good or ill – there are some who are “ooooh, look at my enviable life – aren’t you jealous?” or who are SO over the top about EVERYTHING – gasping, hands flailing about – that they’re just exhausting and silly).

I watch a lot of reviews and tutorials on youtube but only if I can’t find the swatches on your website here. The live swatches on youtube or tiktok are useful but I don’t have time to sit through a whole video just to look at the swatches. I prefer reading it from a blog quickly to find what I want. I find that the videos do make me want to consume/buy more than I need, so I watch just a few youtubers and only when I was curious about the products. I never got into tiktok, I find it too short and not enough info so I always end up looking up the info elsewhere.

Not anymore. I used to follow a few YouTube accounts for tutorials, but I can’t be bothered to sit through videos anymore. I like the efficiency of tutorials and if I could find accounts that did just voice overs with a speed through technique or the pros and cons of a product, I might be interested in that.

I used to spend hours watching makeup videos on YouTube but not as much anymore. I found color swatching on video varies so much depending on their coloring, lighting etc. I get it and it is nothing like I expected. I think it’s good for basic information and reviews but find Temptalia (and I mean this honestly)
much more accurate when I want a trustworthy opinion and swatches…

I mostly don’t really prefer / like makeup tutorials or reviews.
What I enjoy when it comes to beauty content is makeup history, brand history deep dives, ingredient analysis, the technicals behind producing makeup and how the industry can become better (especially sustainability).

I’ve never done Tik Tok, for any reason. I find most of the popular “youth-oriented” social media platforms to be too visually cluttered and irritating. I do like Youtube, for reviews and other beauty content, but it’s mostly something I do when I have a bit of extra time, not something I seek out.

I do have a few favorites on YouTube that I find relaxing and interesting about makeup. I’m not interested in shorts or TikTok and less and less on Instagram.

I used to live for the next youtube make-up video but now I barely watch.. unless a new product is out and I am trying to match a shade when buying online… but unless they are strictly a tutorial I feel like they are just a commercial…

Although I do not watch beauty content as much as I used to (pre children), I still enjoy the occassional “how-to” video. But I especially enjoy the perfume haul/review videos. I get to see what other beauty junkies are buying and why.

I don’t have the time and I was there (YT) mostly for techniques. Every blue moon I may look to see what’s happening with a fav influencer (Jordan Liberty – he’s so good!, Wayne Goss – my first influencer technique mentor, Jackie Anna – for the laughs mostly, but much less lately, Eimear McElheron & An Knook – for great eye looks and eye look techniques, and some who are left and others, like Mel, who are know longer with us.) That’s it for the video.

I had been away from YouTube for about a year and came back to check on the accounts I used to follow, specifically Mel and that was a sad day. My viewing had dwindled to her and two others and I haven’t been back since.

I stopped consuming beauty videos during the dark parts of the pandemic when the racists and facists revealed themselves. Second to those destructive, ugly humans, I couldn’t take the consumerism being shoved at us by people being paid to say crappy products – who rarely formed a real review of anything they promoted – were worth our money in this ridiculous economy. I also got tired of hypocrites and those who indulged a little too hard in ignorance. I don’t need everyone making videos to be a genius, what I need is for them to acknowledge their limitations and not speak on matters they’re wildly uninformed on. They’re on a platform that reaches a wide audience, spewing poorly thought out opinions is maybe not the best use of their, and our, time. The accepted format of youtube videos (gross “click bait” thumbnails/titles, the canned “hey everyone, welcome to my channel SMASH that subscribe button!, etc. etc. that takes up about a minute to a minute and a half. every time.) literally makes me grit my teeth and smash my buttons trying to get past it as fast as possible.
At the end of the day I’m tired of noise. Socially it’s become accepted that people just word vomit and fill up space and time with little, to no, actually useful information. I don’t find that kind of thing entertaining and if it’s not real…well, it’s time to move on. I get it appeals to the kind of people who popularized “reality tv” (lol – which is anything but) and shallow “fluffy” junk food-style media, as that’s not me then it just felt like I outgrew anything social media had to offer.
All of that might sound snotty, but it’s mostly bitterness. I adore makeup. I adore art. I adore colors and textures and lines and aesthetics and AUTHENTICITY. None of which sells broadly like the corporate swill that drowns out (or worse, steals and waters down) real creativity and quality. Even coming here makes me sad. I find this place to be a real resource, and now it’s colourpop this and celeb brand that and literally every page looks exactly the same to me. It feels like a waste of you and what you brought us for all those years before corporations saw how much money could be made on those of us who love art and self-expression.
Thanks for coming to my downer ted talk.
