What brand can't seem to do eyeliner well?
For as solid as their core products are, I don’t find I love a lot of MAC’s eyeliners!

I don’t like the Sephora liners in your picture here. I got a dark blue and it’s patchy in my waterline and somehow ends up in flakes on my face.
The Sephora pencil liners used to be good years ago, the old packaging. I swatched recently the dark blue one in store and it’s not how I remember my old My Boyfriend’s Jeans was. They used to have a wonderful green as well.
I found just the opposite – I’ve used Sephora liners for years and find that, for the most part, they last and last and don’t dry out the way the Marc Jacobs ones did/do. But I’ve not tried the reformulated ones though I can see from Christine’s reviews that the new formula is a real down-grade. Sephora used to have several outstanding green liners – T-Rex, Go for a Ride, Snakeskin Dress, Waterfall… Most of those have been discontinued but one or two may still be around in the “crapified” reformulation.
Sephora — The pencils dry out so quickly. E.l.f.l can’t do pencils and pens. Wet n Wild can’t seem to do a great liquid liner.
You’re definitely right about the Sephora Contour Liners, Rachel! They a “use ’em or lose ’em” type of product. If I don’t use a specific shade often enough, or recently enough, they dry up. What a waste of coin!
Mac eyeliners smeared all over, I thought they were horrible and I don’t think there lipliners are any good either. Never found a great one so use powder eyeshadow to line my eyes. Stays all day and doesn’t smear!
Marc Jacobs pencils dry out far too quickly for me. I tossed all quite awhile back and would not repurchase.
I wonder if there was a source of batch to batch variation on those Marc Jacobs eyeliners. My mom absolutely loves them, and she had some for 2-3 years, no drying issues; and I’ll be honest, she doesn’t take care too much of makeup storage conditions.
But I noticed many other people saying they dry out fast.
But in the end they discontinued the entire makeup line… something clearly didn’t work well.
I believe so. I found them hit and miss with the more recent (now a couple of years ago) being mostly miss and so darned rigid to make them painful to apply. Not cool.
Same experience here, Wednesday. I loved the brown one I splurged on and the black one….til both became unusable in a really short time and I mentally kicked myself for not using them daily but saving them for “special occasions”. I recently found Overt (green) at Winners and use that sucker practically every day because I know what will happen if I don’t! On the other hand, I found the previous versions of the Sephora liners to last and remain usable for ages…. I’m distressed that my favourite (Cappuccino) has been reformulated so badly – I’m at a loss as to what to replace it with.
When it comes to the twist up ones with the plastic sharpener at the bottom, no brand does a good job.
Yep, you got that right, Lesley! No one gets those type of liners just right. Marc Jacobs Blaquer was the only good one I ever used, but then again, I was using it just about every day, and so that one never dried up on me.
I encountered some eyeliner flops, but nothing was as bad as Charlotte Tilbury one. The Rock ‘N’ Kohl eyeliner pencils are horrible. No staying power, too creamy to be applied on the waterline, they irritated my eyes. I’ve tried bad drugstore eyeliners, but even those weren’t as bad.
Sephora pencils. For some reason, they disappear on my eyelids (with or w/o primer), and I do not have oily eyelids. Plus they transfer. It might be their formula or my skin. Same with Marc Jacobs and MAC pencils, although the ultra-skinny ones from MJ perform better.
The only pencils that stay put on me all day and do not smudge are the retractable eyeliners from Givenchy (Chestnut and African Bronze). Today I have Chestnut since this morning, and still there after almost 7 hours now.
Being on here, I’ve seen many an eyeliner fail on the part of ColourPop and sometimes MAC. From my own personal experience, I’ve gotten a few poorly formulated eye pencils from Nyx, but my handful of MAC liners are quite alright. ColourPop liners seem to dry out far too soon, though.
I know everyone loved these but they dried up so fast…Marc Jacobs liners!
I had a poor experience with these. Blacquer wasn’t too bad but the pale blue one I bought for my waterline was too patchy to use. I never understood why everyone loved them so much.
See I had Blacquer and it dried up in one month. 3 of them actually did. I wear makeup every day and wore it frequently and I store my makeup in cool dry places. Never have a problem with things drying out so rapidly. Not like I carry makeup with me in the daily either. While color was black and the application smooth. They just never lasted for me
The MJBs disappeared virtually instantly. 2 blinks on the waterline and tight line. Even the app on the upper eyelid was gone w/in the hour. Too bad, as the colors were grand. Never got to the drying stage, since they never worked. Fast toss.
Not an eyeliner fan myself (hooded eyes), but I always am interested in what new eyeliners are about. I think quite a few brands have had some great and awful products over the years, eyeliner wise.
But I agree with you Christine, MAC’s have been the most inconsistent.
Really? I find MAC is incredibly consistent and have sturdy products. I’ve tried a few lines and they are always good. I’ve used MAC liners too for like 25 yrs and the only ones I’m loyal too
I also like MAC eyeliners. I don’t have many, but the ones I have are lovely.
I love eyeliner almost as much as lipstick so I’m
always picking up any twist up that I see. All fails, all ds: Maybelline, Covergirl and L’Oréal. These brands for me can’t get it right. Mostly, just tooooo dry. Clinique Intense, while mighty smudgy, is my go to.
I know I’m in the minority on this, but Urban Decay pencils have been terrible. They smear, fade and don’t offer good color payoff. I’ve tried many different shades, some of which were quite nice, but none of them worth the price.
I agree they smudge. Not the worst but not the best for liners. I think people see a wide range of colors and forgive its flaws
I had to return these special edition Urban Decay ones from back in the Game of Thrones day. Man, they were TERRIBLE
