Survey Says... April 20th, 2022
Happy Wednesday! Here's this week's survey, which you can copy and paste and share as a comment.
- Your skin tone/coloring:
- Favorite matte black eyeshadow?
- Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone?
- Favorite eyeshadow for transition?
Your skin tone/coloring: Fair warm
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? Urban Decay Blackout (from Naked 2)
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? Maybelline single eyeshadow Soft Pearl
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Too Faced Pink Suede
Your skin tone/coloring: pale, cool
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? I don’t think I really have one – any matte black eyeshadow is pretty much the same as any other to me, though I did use ABH Noir (from the Sultry palette) the other day under my lower lashes and really liked it. I guess if I had to choose a “favourite”, it might be MAC Typographic, which isn’t really totally “black” black and perhaps that’s why I like it – it’s a bit less hard and harsh looking.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? Not really a shadow at all, it’s Benefit’s High Brow, a pale pink crayon/pencil that really does give my brows and brow bone a “lifted” look
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Stila Puppy or Sephora Cashmere Coat, both sadly discontinued now!
Your skin tone/coloring: light, MAC NC 20
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? MAC Carbon. I don’t really use black but I do prefer one that is buildable so it’s easy to use and doesn’t get out of hand too quickly
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? Occasionally I will put a white/beige shimmer that’s in a palette on the brow bone but in general I don’t use anything for the brow bone
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? MAC Wedge, Soft Brown , Soft Teddy (LE), Bamboo
Your skin tone/coloring: Very fair with neutral to cool undertones, grey hair and dark brown eyes.
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? This is going to sound crazy but I have a shadow that I purchased in the 70’s, yes, you read that right! It was a shadow from Clinique that was a strange hybrid between a eye liner and a shadow. The name has long since worn off. It came in a silver case that slid out and you would add water to use it as a liner and just a regular brush to use as a shadow. Crazy but still my favorite. It was very matte and I used it a ton back in the day. I don’t wear much black anymore but when I do I like this one. I can control the depth very easily.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? ABH Tempura from the Renaissance palette. I also use a MUG shadow in a pan that I can’t remember the name of and when I looked I don’t see it on their site. I understand they are going out of business so may have sold out already? I prefer a matte shadow for the brow bone and depending on whether I am going cool or warm with the rest of my look, it is one or the other.
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Well, if there is an appropriate depth and light enough, shade in whatever palette I am using, then I use that. If I am pulling one from another palette or a single shadow, I use MAC Omega a lot. I also use MAC Soft Brown. I do prefer just to use a transition shade from the palette I am using just for ease and the fact that then the shadows usually all blend harmoniously.
This is CRAZY!!!! I still have that Clinique product too – it was called Basic Eye Emphasizer and this was back in the day when it was not easy to find a matte, neutral eyeshadow (most eyeshadows were colourful and not very natural looking). As I recall, it came with a very skinny brush to use for lining. I loved that product, which explains why I’ve never tossed it (and I’m sure it’s still fine to use – I need to give it a try). But this was also back in the days BEFORE eyeshadow primers and so I’d always end up with it creased by about mid-day (probably didn’t help that even back then, I always wore eye cream). It’s so amazing that someone else not only remembers this wonderful product but also has theirs still in use!
Yes, that is it exactly. I couldn’t remember the name for love or money. The name strip on the bottom has long since disappeared. I love that thing. Funny, I can remember where I purchased it which then was in an actual store as online didn’t exist. I was perusing the makeup section at the Macy’s at Meadowood Mall in Reno, Nevada. I remember walking by it and then going back and purchased it mostly to use as an eye liner. I liked a good cake eye liner. They made cake mascara’s back then also. Not sure if any companies still do. Anyway, I use to take a Maybelline deep black eye pencil and go back and forth in my crease until I had this thick black line. Then I would take the Clinique and with the brush, go back and forth in the crease. Then I would cover the whole lid, up to my hood with whatever eye shadow I was going to wear. Use the Clinique as a liner, brow bone highlighter and loads of mascara. I was goth before it was popular. The funny thing was I got so many compliments on my eye makeup. Now I wonder if they were sincere or just putting one over on me!! Thank you for the name and the trip down memory lane. Glad to hear you still have yours also. Wonder if they stopped making it or maybe renamed it? Probably not since hardly anyone uses cake liner anymore. CRAZY!!
I had to go check their website. They have the same packaging and brush in a cake liner in what looks like the same shade. Not sure as the shade name is Muted Brown but I have no idea what the shade name was before. It is sold out. Has 4 stars. Doesn’t say anything about using it as an eye shadow. I am pretty sure it was marketed as both back in the day but maybe I am just making that up. For sure I used it as one!
I posted a reply yesterday (or thought I did…may have accidentally emailed it to the Temptalia site – I’ve done that before!). I have a few dark grey/borderline black shadows that are very, very close to the Basic Eye Emphasizer (MAC’s Legendary Black and Keep Your Cool are almost identical). But yes, the Basic Eye Emphasizer was INDEED marketed as both a cake liner and eyeshadow (I looked online and found one of the original ads which reminded me that in addition to the very fine liner brush, there was also a sponge tipped shadow applicator – long ago disintegrated – included and a funny little “dip” in the plastic for sort of “muddling” the wet liner brush and product).
I remember using Max Factor cake eyeliner to do a very severe “cut crease” look that Twiggy made popular. I think I was maybe 14 years old and must have looked a real sight!
I had forgotten that there was a sponge tip applicator. Mine is long since gone. I went to look for mine yesterday and couldn’t find it. I know I would not have gotten rid of it but I think it is in an armoire that I can’t get to right now. I remember the shade as being more of a grey/black than the brown black that I found when I googled the name. The one that I found had a ton of comments under it begging them to bring it back. The actual product had a line dividing the the product so that you would use the wet from the smaller side of the product and the larger area was to use dry. Yes, the little divot to mix the liner was never used by me! Wow, what a memory.
I was happy to have found mine quite easily (it’s in the drawer in one of our guest rooms where I keep set aside eyeshadow palettes and singles – both those that are ancient and those that I’ve just set aside). I hope you can find yours! My sponge tip is long gone and I honestly didn’t remember that it had included one until I googled “Clinique Basic Eye Emphasizer” and clicked on “images” and then saw an ad “from the day” for the product. You should google it – it’ll be a real trip down memory lane to see the ad and the product intact!
I went and Googled it and looked at the old ad for it. What a trip down memory lane. I am sure mine is in the armoire. I moved the armoire to the new room I built out of my garage and then I brought home some things from storage to go through and we piled the boxes in front of the armoire. I am going to be forced to go move those boxes to make sure mine is there!
Your skin tone/coloring: Under my name (blue-green eyes, dark hair)
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? Depending on the level of smoke I want in a look, either MAC Nehru or UD Blackout.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? That’s easy and predictable: MAC Orb!
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Too many great ones in my collection, but my 2 no-brainer shades are MAC Kid or Soft Brown, at least for warmer looks. If I were home, I could look up favorite cool-toned shades.
Your skin tone/colouring: Porcelain, with pink undertones
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? I have never used a matte black eyeshadow in my makeup life – waay too dark for me! It’s one of my least favourite shades.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? Probably Sin from Naked 1
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Usually it’s a goldy shade or a soft neutral like UD’s Toasted, YDK, sometimes Smog – similar shades to these. From Lorac’s Noir – perhaps Rendevous. It depends on the colour story I am going for.
Your skin tone/coloring: Fair pink undertone, brown hair w/highlights, hazel eyes
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? UD Blackout
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? CT Pearlescent Rose from the Pillow Talk Dreams Palette
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Diadem, Flesh or Atik from the ND Star Palette
Your skin tone/coloring: Fair/Light.
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? Sugarpill’s Bulletproof. I have my original, I have hit pan but I never use black eyeshadow now.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? Whatever is close to my skintone or slightly lighter. It’s how I use up such shades in palettes.
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? I don’t have a standby transition, I use a setting powder over primer and go to town.
Your skin tone/coloring: pale, cool skin (foundation matches: Fenty Pro Filt’r 110, Urban Decay All Nighter 2.5, NARS Natural Radiant Longwear 2.0 Mont Blanc, Kevyn Aucoin The Etherealist Light EF 02, L’Oreal True Match C3 Creamy Natural), gray eyes, brown hair with red highlights and scattered blonde/blue strands. My everyday base products are Fenty-Amber Match Stick as cheek contour and Pro Filt’r concealer and Soft Matte foundation in 110.
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? UD Jet from Born to Run.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? I don’t have any one favorite, but this past Friday I wore ColourPop Cold Drink on my browbone and it was really pretty.
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? Again, I don’t have any one favorite. I’m going to have Melt Flamingo Dream above my crease this coming Friday, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how that’ll look!
Your skin tone/coloring: pale yellowish, red hair
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? Umbra!!
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? I usually just use whatever highlighter I have on my cheeks
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? I don’t really use one :X
Your skin tone/coloring: Light-medium with warm yellow undertone, dark brown hair and eyes
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? None, I don’t use black eyeshadow
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? I don’t find highlighting the brow bone flattering on me, but when I rarely do something is my illuminating powder (MAC Emphasize) or a matte/satin very light beige like MAC Vanilla or Blanc Type
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? MAC Haux
Your skin tone/coloring: above with freckles, green eyes, warm brown hair.
Favorite matte black eyeshadow? Spot from ND Biba, but also Grace from the Sugar Drizzle Polish Dragonfly Warrior palette.
Favorite eyeshadow for the brow bone? I don’t put eyeshadow on my brow bone… it doesn’t add anything for me because there’s not a lot of brow bone to highlight.
Favorite eyeshadow for transition? I don’t really use transition shades anymore, at least not like I used to. As long as it’s a lighter shade, no matter what color, it works for me.
Your skin tone/coloring: above
