The brand, the type of product, and the colors. If it’s a brand that hasn’t been putting out great quality lately, then no matter how interesting the products might be, I’m wary and not that excited, but if it’s a brand that has a fantastic formula and then they’re releasing shades or finishes that are interesting to me, then I can get enthused.

Sorry… Launches really don’t titillate my heart much. I get a lot more excited about reviews here than by looking at the picture of a model wearing some new lipstick or the picture of the actual lipstick. When was the last time an eyeshadow in the pan looked exactly as it would on my eyelid? And when was the last time a lipstick in the bullet looked as it would on my lips? e.g. Christine wearing Legendaire by Chanel vs the actual lipstick – I would have expected a dark red matte lipstick just but it’s actually raspberry red.
I always think that as technology evolves, pictures should become more accurate. But more and more these days I’m surprised how different products look in launch photos vs. in store or in Christine’s swatches. And not only pictures from the brands, I kind of feel that sponsored content of reviewers sometimes has specific filters applied or colors are saturated differently.
A virtual litany of things, but firstly, the color story and theme. Then there’s the brand’s reputation for quality (or lack thereof), packaging, and how I feel I can truly get use out of it.
Personally I know the colors I like and suit me, and I like minimalist clean (preferably black) packaging, so color stories and packaging rarely gets me excited. If the launch uses a very artsy aesthetic, maybe a collaboration with and an artist… maybe it gets me somewhat excited.
At this point what it gets me more excited is new or improved formulas. I want real innovation (not brands putting marketing claims just because that’s the new hype), I want brands show that they go back regularly to the research labs and improve products constantly.
What gets me excited about a new launch is the possibily of some beauty products that will suit me – whether it be a lipstick or an eyeshadow palette. It would have to be of shades that I like and would wear.
It would have to review well here first and it would fit in with all of my other, many products.
Innovative products from brands that I know put out stellar quality products. Otherwise it’s a pass for me.
