Have your preferences changed for what you like in a foundation? (If so, how?)
Yes! I used to prefer higher coverage and more matte foundations, but now I tend to enjoy buildable, light-medium coverage with a more natural finish.

Not at all. I want exactly what I wanted 20 years ago. I want sth that looks like I don’t having anything on and: layers well on top sunscreen & moisturiser, matte, medium to high coverage, holds all day, doesn’t settle into fine lines or make them more noticeable, is my exact colour, doesn’t give me zits or make me itchy, and can “be worked with” i.e. doesn’t dry too fast, doesn’t dry “powdery”, doesn’t need a fixing spray to hold, I can’t feel it on, and, last but not least, dries properly i.e. it doesn’t sit on top on my skin in a way that a single touch removes it and leaves a streak down my cheek. I also like to be able to put a bit on top of blush if I used too much, instead of removing it all, so it must look good after touch-ups.
I should mention I haven’t worn much foundation lately because under a mask I don’t feel the need & my skin doesn’t breathe properly.
What are your favorites, Andrea?
I started to reach for cushion foundations instead of liquid ones. It´s easy and quick. I am wondering about the expiration of liquid foundations because they are not getting any love. Before I used to go through them relatively quickly.
I once preferred a matte look with medium to full coverage. Now my aging skin is not flattered by such foundations. I prefer a satin finish (definitely not dewy though) and I am content with less coverage so long as any redness is toned down.
Same.
No!! I have always wanted perfectly skin-like foundation that made me look like I just had effortlessly incredible skin. What has changed is availability of foundations like this and of course my ability to afford them. Back in college I had some weird fluid to powder L’Oreal something that was supposed to be a dupe for Armani… and wasn’t. LOL
My go-to right now is Les Beiges Healthy Glow from Chanel, applied with a stippling brush. It is just gorgeous!!
Not really. I’ve always preferred foundations that feel like nothing on the skin but make it look like my skin is PERFECT and without a lot of time and effort – oh, and if they can be consistent in their perfect results, that’s another point in their favour. If they can contain sunscreen, so much the better. Oh, and long-wearing too or at least not going all claggy and curdled looking as they start to show wear. It goes without saying that the perfect foundation for me doesn’t actually exist. I have moved away from a preference for matte foundation toward those that are a bit on the dewy side (but not too much – I guess “velvety” would be the word).
My sin hasn’t changed much in over a decade so no. We all want makeup that blends seamlessly into out skin and that’s been tricky to achieve for me whether I use a 60 USD foundation or a 7 USD one. I’ve always used dewy foundation/BB creams b/c my skin is too dry & dehydrated for anything thicker than that. Even dewy foundations look unflattering after a couple of hours. I’ve tried many primers, mostly dimethicone-free ones because that ingredient is incompatible with my skin but moisturizer works better than any specific primers. I’d rather wear no foundation at all, tbh. It was fun to try a time and money drain hobby like makeup when I was young but I don’t want to make it a lifetime obsession. I’m not fond of the beauty industry, either.
Pretty much the same here. As a teenager who didn’t really wear foundation on a daily basis but did for photos of my makeup experimentation, I wanted “perfect” skin (which, at the time, I felt was matte and totally even). As an adult who wore makeup to work, I strongly preferred something with lighter coverage and a more satin finish, because it wore down less obviously as I sweated my butt my off running around a store 😂
Exactly the same for me — I used to prefer medium-high super matte foundations. I thought that was the only thing I could wear because of my oily acne-prone skim, but it made wearing makeup a super uncomfortable experience. These days I want something light, with ability to build and layers well with my skincare. I really just want my skin tone evened out a bit, and the less I notice a base product, the better
Surprisingly, no.
Even since my teen years I preferred a medium to full (buildable) coverage with a matte (but not flat) finish. My skin evolved from oily breakout prone to combination with dry patches (and the change between continental Europe to dry coastal California), but I still love the same things in a foundation. I started using more hydrating skincare, but my base makeup is the same.
Yes, I use to prefer pretty full coverage and matte looks. Now I tend to prefer more medium coverage that I can build in certain areas and I do like a more dewy look. I don’t mean greasy but just a healthy glow. I only powder around my nose and under my eyes to set my concealer.
Like yourself, I used to only wear those flat matte type of foundations like Revlon Colorstay or Lancome Teint Idole. Now I use Fenty Profilt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation or MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Nourishing Foundation. Both of which appear more skin-like and I can easily dial up or dial down the level of coverage.
Yes. I used to go for really matte, high coverage foundation because of my cystic acne and super oily skin, and personal style. These days, though, that kind of foundation sets into the fine lines on my forehead and around my mouth. I don’t get the cystic acne as often or as bad, and my skin is less oily, so the last few years I’ve preferred more medium, buildable coverage and a more natural finish. I even recently went more luminous this summer with the Laura Geller Baked-n-Brightening Foundation, and I actually really liked it on me.
Hiya Rachel.. is the Geller foundation a powder?
Yes. It color corrects, too.
As I have gotten older I have grown to lighter coverage, also I prefer a slightly deeper shade than I used to like. I also prefer a thinner more build-able formula, so that it does not settle into fine lines. I am finding that less is more.
Yes.. I have always had oily skin and never really liked much foundation. I didnt really understand concealer except to cover an acne bump/blemish. Youtube changed my life! I swear!! I have run the gamut of all the influencer applications.. however I never could paint big triangles and stripes on my face. Lots of complextion products on them look fabulous.. however it’s clownish on me. I have pretty much only ever had 2 light foundations at a time and mostly rely on luminescent primer, concealer where needed and powder then bronzer. Works lovely for me, Foundation must be light – my faves are the Pat McGrath and the Tom Ford Traceless…
Most of the influencers on You Tube have incredibly good lighting, I don’t think many of them show the makeup in natural light or outside in the sun. I think of many of the videos I watch as makeup entertainment, not tutorials.
But that just goes for most of the influencers, some seem more “honest”.
Just my humble opinion, of course. 🙂
I have somehow amazingly held out over the PMG foundation. Traceless used to be a favourite when I was younger and my skin was oilier. I’m definitely a fan of using minute amounts and it is amazing how well a concealer can work if you are not splooging out 1/4 of the tube into weird shapes on your face 😁
Several years ago, when I worked out that I had pink undertones, I started looking for some DS foundations that carried the porcelain rose shade and found that whilst Rimmel did, it was not long lasting. Luckily L’Oreal extended their line to include this shade in their True Match range.
I do prefer a medium coverage matte foundation as the dewy or natural ones end up making me look too shiny. Clarin’s Everlasting foundation in Linen (now d/c) was my actual favourite.
Yes, I used to love that high-coverage diffused matte finish and now mix that kind of foundation with a BB cream, I guess because I get so many BBs in my sample bags. And the pandemic made me love sparkly highligher due to so many Zoom meetings, lol! I have a lot to learn which is why I am here.
Pretty much the same. I like a lighter texture than previous. I do not like full coverage foundation..never have. If I want a more perfected look, I take the extra step of applying pore minimizing primer in T zone or a light dusting of loose powder in same area.
I like a natural finish, not too matte, not too dewy. Medium buildable. I like to smoke out my foundation by applying with mostly dry sponge and hitting the reddest parts of my face first (centre..typical) and then sponging it out to minimal at perimeter. Sometimes I like powder foundations, that usually being in summer because I sweat more and I like the additional sun protection mineral powders lend.
I do not like thick liquid foundations, prefer something on the runnier side. Right now I do not wear foundation as much as I used to, but when I do I grab Estee Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue. I have always had pretty good luck with EL foundations in general because I find they have really good light neutral shades. I think this is a fantastic formula for aging skin.
When I was young, I despised my skin and did my best to completely cover it. I think I used a creme whipped foundation be Elizabeth Arden, not certain, in a slightly deeper color, as tanning was popular. I set it with a regular powder. I did have some acne scars and general areas of redness.
As I’ve gotten older, my skin and skin care improved. I learned I have sensitive skin. Now I prefer a natural to slightly luminous finish with light to light medium coverage and set with Laura Mercier translucent powder and setting spray. My current go to foundations are LA Mer and Armani Luminous Silk. Although both are pricey, they go far. I don’t replace them frequently.
Yes, I used to like medium to full coverage and now I like minimal coverage. Also, thanks to Fenty expanding the range, I can finally get coverage in my actual skin tone (120).
I’ve always preferred medium-to-full coverage foundations with a satin matte-to-matte finish; the biggest change is that I eventually came to prefer higher-end formulas like Fenty and Urban Decay over drugstore formulas.
Even though I have oily skin, it’s always been the natural, dewy type of base that I gravitate towards. The full coverage look, while glam and loved by many, is just not for me. It makes me look like I’m too made up — like I’m going to a formal event, which isn’t really my style for everyday.
I do want to start trying out cushion foundations though as many people seem to like them!
When I was young I never used foundation, never! I sometime used a powder just to mattify my oily T-zone.
These days I need to cover some darker spots and some redness, I like a satin to velvet finish that doesn’t settle in lines or pores, because of the pores I need a primer.
I still haven’t found a perfect foundation, EL Double Wear applied in a very, very thin layer is OK, CT Magic Foundation works quite well. I like MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation.
I also need to set my T-zone, but be careful not to get too much powder onto the cheeks as they then appear dry.
