Holiday Collections
I love some of the more value-packed sets, as it can be a nice way to try more shades while spending less per product (and how many of us finish products in full?). I think sometimes holiday collections get stale, though, as brands include the same shades (or nearly the same) each year. I also love red lipstick, gold in most forms, and sparkle, so… holiday is a good time to shine.

Holiday stuff is mostly bust for me. I do not buy cosmetics/skincare for others so it comes down to what I may enjoy. I do not find much to be inspired and prefer seasonal collections or new releases where quality is more consistent and I am not buying 3 items for the price of 1 tossing 2. I find a lot of it is noise and junk. Xoxo Harsh Wednesday on a Monday.
I also enjoy the value packs and unique collections that may be a little over the top for regular collections. I don’t enjoy overpriced or bad quality items just packaged nicely and hyped though.
In general, I like the holiday color stories, which often feature dark and bright jewel toned eyeshadow and red and berry lipstick. I like those colors best and they look the best on me. So I lie in wait all year for holiday releases. But I was more dependent on holiday releases in the past than I am now because now large colorful palettes are being released year round!
What I love is the special embossing or other lovely details on the products themselves that some brands do. Also, certain brands go all out with better than their average quality. Many interesting colors to choose from, too
What I’m not so keen on is that there are other brands who are repeat offenders with sub par quality in their holiday products. Or skimping on their quantity, ounce vs cost. And then there’s the temptation factor that attacks my wallet!
I like the extra value that they often offer (NOT Hourglass, though – they’re the Holiday Grinches when it comes to value) and I love the festive, bright and pretty colours that often are featured in Holiday collections. I don’t like that they really tempt me to buy stuff that I don’t really need.
Throughout the year, I am always shopping for my daughter and for small things that can be put into her Advent calendar. I always end up with quite a few empty boxes to fill and holiday releases fit the bill. I like the holiday releases as they generally are a little outside the box and usually contain deeper, more saturated colors. Those are my daughters preferred colors.
Summer and spring color stories appeal to me the most, so I like holiday sets that include travel sizes of products I’m already interested in.
What I like about Holiday collections is the opportunity for brands to bring out something new and different (obviously of good quality though). And sometimes that happens and at other times it doesn’t.
What I do dislike is substandard and a mish mash of colours in the eyeshadow palettes (due to the rush to get them out) and the same old same old – pinks and reds, reds and pinks….
Some of the skincare value packs are good if you want to try out the brand, but when they include a toner, I don’t like them.
I think what I learned the most about Holiday is DO NOT BUY ANY TWO FACED – no matter how cute it is. Their Holiday sets are soooo bad.
Lately, I almost feel overwhelmed with all the holiday sets and regular products that I’ve stopped looking for a while. I guess I feel holiday sets can seem temporary or gimmicky, or regular product with new names. I actually long for the days when there were fewer brands. Something was nice about Lancôme being the high end at the department store and the MAC counter was jazzy and there was the comfort of the Elizabeth Arden counter. Feeling nostalgic I suppose.
Unless it’s something spectacular I stay away from Holiday Collections, they are usually too big and underwhelming. I really would love to be proved wrong on that. I have enough sparkle in my collection to satisfy that obsession. The cute little sample sets can sometimes interest me though.
I like the value and mini sets as an opportunity to try new brands or products. I also sometimes enjoy getting a “prettier” version of a standby product. Most often I end up buying holiday sets of makeup tools like brushes or sponges on clearance at the drugstore in January hehe
Like: a rare palette find with lots of colors and quality to match with a more affordable price
Dislike: that the rare find is becoming rarer, especially with quality and interesting color schemes
I love the sparkle and gleam of holiday collections, and that sometimes they include items I wouldn’t normally buy. I dislike that sometimes holiday sets are lower quality than their year-round counterparts.
