What's your advice to get out of makeup rut?
There are a lot of challenges that exist, so you can join a challenge (usually can find them on social media, like Instagram) or just do it on your own, which can be a way to break out of one’s norm. You can also look at some of the products you have that you haven’t used in awhile, put them aside, and then make sure you use at least one of those products each time you wear makeup. Sometimes, enjoy the rut and ride it out–sometimes less pressure and less focus on getting out helps.
I don’t have any, to be honest. I love makeup but I’m quite happy in my “rut” – it’s where I feel comfortable and where I think I look my best, which, for me, is the reason I wear makeup. I will say though that buying the UD Game of Thrones palette and falling hard for Weirwood Leaves has opened a door in my “rut” (talk about mixed metaphors) – starting me using similar shades I already had (Marc Jacobs O!Yeah, Smashbox Headline) or new ones (a shade in Dior’s Feel 5-pan and New Look 5-pan) has been a happy new experience for me.
I’m trying to make it easier to use my whole collection by organizing it into an app, but mostly they require too much work. I really want an app version of the Temptalia vanity (tell it what I have and it produces pre-existing pictures) which I can organize more. Actually I came here to see if it’s already better than the paid stuff in the App Store.
You and me both!!!!!
And yes, her vanity is the best I’ve found for me. If you find better, do let me know. (I’ll still keep my vanity here too, but having it portable would be great.)
I don’t change things up very much and I don’t consider that being in a rut. If what I am using doesn’t bore me, I just keep at it.
Because I’ve been in a bit of one this entire year, and then some, I have goose eggs. I’m probably the last person one should ask! Will say this, though, Christine’s advice about challenge groups would certainly help.
My advice to get out of a makeup rut is to shop your stash – pair an unused, never tried before eyeshadow shade with a shade that you would normally use and see how it works.
I would also set myself a bit of a challenge and use a different eye palette and lipstick every day.
And thirdly, I would check out some of Christine’s fabulous eyeshadow suggestions – like 30 ways for a summer (or autumn) look and see if you can incorporate the ones you like the best.
I never find myself in a makeup rut at all!
Other than sometimes being overwhelmed by my collection, I’m not sure what a “rut” is. I love my makeup! Playing and experimenting is one of the favorite parts of my day! I never wear the same thing twice in a row, even mascara or foundation! I am over 60 and own my business, so I’m way past worrying about “acting my age.” I’m much more adventuresome with color and texture than I was in my younger, neutral (professional, working for someone else) days. Finding the freedom in being impetuous can be a “rut”breaker!
I agree with what you suggested. I’ve done at least two of those and they helped, especially looking deep in what I have to try new color combinations. Also, looking at what others have done eye makeup wise in YT,FB & Instagram and trying to copy it or do your own version of it.
