Has researching products before purchasing actually led to better purchases for you?

In general (not just in beauty), absolutely! Even reviews that aren’t super informative or the most in-depth/best reviews can still be more helpful than not in making a purchase.

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

It most certainly has! And, as you also mentioned, it’s not just beauty products and makeup. Also works out for any and all appliances I’ve bought over the years, too. I’m very into researching *before* I buy almost anything. But especially anything for the home (including furniture), skincare, haircare, cosmetics, and to some degree, online clothing shopping, ie; Zulily, and now others after a bad experience.

Absolutely here too. Of course, any product or service – even a stellar one – can garner some negative reviews so I try to weigh them up. Temptalia has saved me a lot of money that would have been wasted on disappointing stuff (of course, Temptalia has also cost me a fortune by showing me wonderful products I simply had to have!). When we do make purchases, we always check out reviews and consumer ratings if we can. It’s good to know ahead of time which brand of toaster, furnace, car, etc. to avoid and which might be a good purchase!

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Since I started researching more skincare and make-up products, from ingredient analysis to reviews, my skin and make-up improved drastically in better. I also rarely nowadays end up buying disappointing products; maybe some are not for me and I won’t end up repurchasing them, but are still workable and I end up finishing them.

So we all look at reviews but in terms of beauty purchases good luck finding honest reviews. Present company excepted! Christine’s site is my only subscribed blog.
As a retired print journalist (who primarily covered dermatology and beauty and because that’s the way actual reporters work, never received free products) I pick up misinformation and ulterior motives a mile away. And I see suspect reviews growing.
Sephora carries a recently introduced serum by Dermalogica I’d spotted at Ulta. Contents sounded promising so I checked Sephora’s reviews. All 131 of them had received the product for free, most were gifted the full size! I wrote Sephora; first response totally ignored my query, wrote again, received an honest answer saying many customers had complained about free-product reviews and to look for verified purchase reviews. I’d like to see all comments limited to those who paid money!
