Are you more interested in a product if it's limited edition?

It’s a higher priority to review for me than something that is permanent, but it doesn’t necessarily make me more interested personally!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Not so much any more (though I was on pins and needles about the Chanel Lumiere et Opulence quad as it was so beautiful and something I knew I’d use and love for years, along the lines of Empreinte du Desert). Nowadays, for the most part, I really only want something if I know it’s (a) something that will flatter me and that I’ll use and (b) of good quality. There was a spell there where very little was interesting me at all and that was a surprisingly liberating feeling!

I think sometimes subconsciously? Not intentionally, though. Brand’s have gotten so good at using FOMO against us that I know that I’ve fallen prey to it more often than I care to admit. Also of note, there are far more LE releases these days than there were even a mere decade ago. Making these so commonplace that it gets easy to fall for them because of how they’re glutting the market.

I prefer great quality products that are always available. I find many times that limited editions are either lesser than quality and potentially just a money grab with pretty packaging by the company OR something I really love and it is a bummer that I can’t replace a favorite product. Whether or not a product is limited edition does not make me automatically want a product and more often than not will push me away from trying it out. One exception is that I may get caught up in the frenzy if I already have the product and know I love it and a new color, vs. a new formula, is being released (like the Bite astrology lipsticks).

I’m personally less interested in a product if it’s limited edition. My approach to make-up is not to try everything under the moon, but to identify amazing products that work for me and I can use over and over again.
I might have a higher interest on permanent products in limited edition packaging (celebrating an event or personality, supporting a cause).

To be completely honest, it’s actually beginning to have the opposite effect… That said, if it’s from one of a literal handful of brands I buy from regularly, I’m going to be equally as interested regardless of status; however, unless it’s very interesting and/or unique, I won’t even look twice. When it comes to certain brands, I’m already looking forward to the next release, but I’ve become far more discerning when it comes to actually purchasing. For example, although I’ve been “collecting” Kat von D eyeshadow palettes since the beginning of the brand, I have allowed myself to skip the ones I know I won’t get much use out of, such as Pastel Goth & Divine, especially since there were so many who would truly enjoy them. On the other hand, when it comes to Melt Cosmetics, I have to have them all, even if I’ll likely only use half the palette (ie, the Vida & Radioactive palettes).

I’m actually less interested in a product if it’s limited edition. I have friends and family who ask me about my makeup and want recommendations of things to buy, so I really prefer when something is going to stick around. It’s no fun to have someone say “OMG I love that lipstick, where can I get it?” and have to tell them that it was limited edition from a year ago.

I have a few that I love, but I think like others I find more often than not limited editions tend to be sub-par to the more permanent products in a line. If it is something I know i will appreciate I will grab it, like the safari palette by ND is a staple fav. But I am growing increasingly irritated with limited editions and faux-scarcity as a marketing tactic. I’m starting to feel that if companies release a product as a limited edition it is because they don’t have faith in it selling without being “collectable” or exploiting a fear of missing out in customers or they don’t have faith in it as a long term product. Either way I have started to take it being limited edition as a warning sign that I might not love it as much once the new and shiny wears off.

Personally, the Limited Edition frenzy that tries to get people whipped into is getting too irritating. If they want to make something Limited Edition, at least make enough that it does not sell out withing two hours, or even two days. Feels so manipulative with the FOMO becoming part of our lingo. I wish it would just end, or make enough for a week or so, if they want to go that route.

Not necessarily more interested, it really depends on the shades, the ratings from you Christine, the price and accessibility.
In the past, I think there were more Limited Edition numbers that I liked – Tom Ford’s Emerald Lust, Dior’s Bonne Etoile (which, thankfully I was able to get), bareMinerals Soft and Smokey – and these were very difficult to get here (I never did get Emerald Lust).
The annoying issue is when the brand says LE and then they don’t make enough of the product to go round….or you find it on sale a month later.

Not “just” because it’s LE. Sometimes I am more interested in an LE product because it has a color story I love, or collectible packaging for one of my interests (Alice in Wonderland, some movies/TV shows, goth/horror, music, art, etc.). I almost never buy for packaging only, though, unless it’s a really inexpensive item. Anything expensive has to have product I like and will use. For example, I passed on the NARS x Andy Warhol collection because the products were crap quality (even though they looked really cool in the pan), but bought the entire UD x Basquiat collection because it was outstanding in every way.

I wrote before just how much I think LEs suck. There’s one exception, though. When a brand brings out a mini try-it size at a steep discount of a permanent product I can purchase again later in the full size. Thinking of Pat McGrath’s little 5 pan mini palettes released for holiday season. I can get behind that kind of LE.

I used to be, but I think for me it’s better to go with permanent makeup products. I actually hope I’ll never be tempted bu another LE, maybe that’s just today as I just got a refund from PMG for the two Starwars six pan palettes and one of the lip products with the annoying:
“We regret to inform you that we are unable to fulfil your order as the product is currently out of stock. We confirm that this order has been canceled and any charges made will be reversed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
I’m really quite angry. I’ll probably repeat this come Friday and Time for Haul.
Going to stop writing now and do something productive, like chores for example.

I’m leaning towards new releases because I know they’re recently manufactured…a lot of permanent stuff stops selling through fast and when you buy it “new” it’s already 2-3 years old (by batch code). I feel like I get most value and use life out of new releases and LE’s.
