LUSH Coalface Cleanser for Your Anti-Acne Arsenal
Lush Coalface Cleanser ($10.95 for 3.5 oz.) is a solid bar that has licorice root as its main ingredient (supposed to help the skin “heal naturally”) and powdered charcoal to exfoliate the skin. The first noticeable characteristic of this product is it has a distinct smell. I couldn’t quite tell you what it is, but I know some find it unpleasant–it’s kind of like out in the woods, around the campfire kind of scent. I’m not one of them, but it’s not a scent that I’m going ga-ga over either! Regardless, the scent doesn’t linger–it rinses off as soon as the product does.
I find Coalface to work really well at reducing acne breakouts. It’s great for oily skin, especially because it can be a little drying on the skin. If you find it drying, make sure to follow-up with a good moisturizer or try a toner. Coalface gives me that “squeaky clean” feeling at the end, which is not really my bag, but often I follow with Sweet Japanese Girl so that “squeaky clean” feeling is minimal. The product lathers up really well, and the gritty charcoal powder bits are rough enough to really get your scrub on.
Overall, I really like this product, and it’s definitely part of my shower time routine! Have you tried Coalface?
Here’s the ingredient list…
Ingredient list: Liquorice Root Decoction (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Propylene Glycol, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Stearate, Rosewood Oil (Aniba rosaeordora), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Powdered Charcoal, Sandalwood Oil (Santalum album), Glycerine, Sodium Chloride, EDTA, Tetrasodium Etidronate, *Linalool, Perfume, Silver Edible Lustre (Potassium aluminum silicate, Titanium dioxide, Iron oxides and hydroxides),.
I’m actually looking for a new cleanser… I may have to try this out.
Let me know if you like should you try it!
Yes, loooooove it. Great for my breakout prone oily skin. Works wonders when paired with Lush Tea Tree Oil spray and Vanishing Cream. Definitely controls my breakouts, big time.
I always love it when someone else loves a product I do 😀
I am loving it! I just bought some of this on boxing day and it’s been great so far! I don’t mind the smell, I sort of like it. I like the way it feels on my skin when I am massaging it in….lovely!
Nice!! Glad you picked one up. I don’t mind the smell either 😀
Never tried it, but I want to. Im using they Fresh Farmacy Soap, its pretty good!
I have Fresh Farmacy, too! 🙂
is this a face or body product or all over? I like the idea of the charcoal but will have to smell first.. lol. I have used powdered crused rice on my face with any cleanser.. and it keeps it really soft, clean and zit free. Will have to smell test the charcoal.. any links for online purchase please?
lush.com 🙂
It is meant for the face, but I always say if it’s meant for the face, it’s probably good enough for the body, too! I know some Lush fans do use it for shoulder/back acne issues.
Lush.com!
I do love Coalface–I use Ultrabland to remove my eye makeup, and follow up with Coalface on, well, my face to remove the Ultrabland, which is far too rich for the rest of my skin. Your choice of oil-free moisturizer and goodbye troubled skin!
I gotta get some Ultrabland next Lush order! What moisturizer do you use?
I got this for my fiance because he agreed to use black soap, lol. I’ve used it a few times when I felt I needed a little extra. Following Coalface with Breath of Fresh Air and Cosmetic Lad smooths and softens without making me feel greasy. *Cosmetic Lad is my new fave moisturizer, btw*
HAHA! That’s great. I am glad you got him using this 😉
How do you use it?
Do you scrub the soap on your face or you just rub the lather off the soap and put them to your face?
I always wonder how people use bar soap 🙁
I rub the soap with water and then lather using what’s on my hands 🙂
Hmm..sounds interesting (I do like licorice!). I’ve been looking for a good cleanser that’ll actually work and I think I might try this! Thanks for the review, I’ve never heard of Lush before!
Let me know if you try it, Katie! Lush is fantastic!
I’ve been using coalface for years! I like to use it in the morning, it gets all the junk off my face but isn’t as drying as my night time products. Love the lather, although it tends to leave black smudges around – I just give my skin a quick wipe after using it.
Nice! I love hearing from long-time users, because it totally boosts my confidence in the product!
finally a normal looking product lolol…kidding
LOL!
I love Coalface.I use it every morning in the shower and my skin has never been better.
I need to buy a new one soon! Yay for LUSH!
Yay for Lush indeed 🙂 How long has yours lasted? Seems like mine will last forever!
Can I have research news on the use of crushed, powdered charcoal as an exfoliant?
