I don’t. I may take a color combo and try to replicate it in a wearable way, but I’m not skilled enough for costume make up and would rather make my make up more wearable for everyday.
I don’t purposefully but I fear some of my makeup looks turn out very Halloweenish!
I do, and I make my own! Any time I can work some SFX into a face of makeup makes me happy. I get the most opportunities at Halloween, but that’s also why I like going to theme parties and any kind of dress-up event.
I like to build my own ideas. For example, this Halloween I’m going to be “a geode” and I wanted to have one eyebrow made of quartz (among other things). I used tutorials to inspire me and see what was possible, and then went from there.
Not Halloween looks because I do not celebrate or observe Halloween. As for other avant garde types of looks, I may try a modified version if I’m inspired enough! I have been known to wear some fairly avant garde eye looks on occasion, at least by AZ standards.

I learn techniques from Halloween tutorials, but never recreated them exactly. For example, a few years ago I did a cracked/broken doll face on myself, using techniques from a You-Tube tutorial, but I did my regular doll makeup differently and put my cracks in different places. I’ve taken elements from avant garde looks, but I don’t think I’ve recreated an entire one.
Yeah, I’ve done some of the more simple ones. I’ve done some clown and pumpkin inspired looks in the past couple years that I’ve really liked. It’s creative and fun, and I don’t even bother with a costume anymore lol
Not really – my daughter in law goes all out with my grandchildren when they go trick or treating, but I don’t .
If looks adapted from Kevyn Aucoin’s and Melanie Mills’ books count as avant-garde, then yes. That’s about as avant-garde as I get, though.
For me, Halloween is for kids. No judgement, just not fun for me.
That said, I love to watch stage and halloween applications.
When I was in school, I was in drama club but preferred to work with sets and makeup as I was very very shy. I was self taught based on what I learned in art class. I made my very youngest sister, 10 yrs younger, look like a very old woman. I also liked to create wounds but was limited dt lack of putty and products.
I had create some looks on my boys when they had carnival (halloween) parties or school events. But, begins ten weeks before Greek Orthodox Easter and culminates on the weekend before «Clean Monday», not now, as in U.S or other countries.
No I don’t, and to be frank, I don’t like to look at them either. It kind of bothers me that with the harsh and in some cases deadly situations in our world that truly threaten the lives of people around the world and even in this country, that we make a kind of art form about expressing horror and human vulnerability in a way that is dissociated from the real and tragic things that are actually happening to people.
I really don’t. If this had been a thing when I was in my teens or 20s, then I would have been all over it. But my days of trick-or-treating and my days of going to bars where there are costume parties are behind me, so there’s no reason for me to do this type of artistry.
I like to look at them. Every year, I dress up as a friendly witch with this HUGE hat. I do a very dramatic purple and black eye. My neighborhood kids love it.
I am from Key West and for years, loved getting dressed up with my family and friends for the parade during Fantasy Fest. We raised so much money for kids programs. I don’t live close anymore but I love looking at the creativity. One year I was Marilyn Monroe and the next a pirate…just dramatic smokey eye which I never do but was so fun. I just shipped off some of my Pat McGrath sequins to a friend who is going to do a mermaid look for her float and she is going to use them on her top and makeup.
This year, I have my super artistic stepdaughter and she is going to dress up for candy too and I’m going to let her do my eyes. We are thinking of going to this country western bar that will have a good band and planning on dressing 80s. Which is when I grew up. It will seriously be more about the hair than any extreme makeup.
