Look - Royal Tour Trio Eye & Gladiola Lipstick

I thought I better do a Royal Tour trio look before I returned it! I’m spending the day with my sister, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be heading to the mall at some point in the afternoon, so I’d like to return some Dame Edna stuff–I just really was disappointed by some items I bought. We’re going to see Marley & Me, so I only wore this look briefly, because I just know I’ll be crying like a baby at least once during the movie–no need to have violet streaming down my face, LOL.

Oh! Oh!  I would like to say that the lips I used in this look are far brighter than I’d normally pair with this bold of an eye.  I really wanted to do *some* lip combo using the Dame Edna products, thus you have it 😉  You can also blot down the lipstick so it’s more of a stain before you put the gloss over it to make it less in-your-face.

What are you all doing for New Year’s Eve?! I ask today, because I know there are several international readers, so I’m sure your NYE is coming up just a lil’ faster than mine 😉

You will need the following…

  • Eyes: Violet pigment (violet base), Dame’s Desire eyeshadow (light purple), Royal Tour eyeshadow (medium purple with fuchsia), Climate Blue eyeshadow (blue-purple), Femme-fi eyeshadow (highlighter), Urban Decay Lust 24/7 Liner (purple), (Plushlash mascara (black)
  • Cheeks: Don’t Be Shy blush (cool pink)
  • Lips: Gladiola lipstick (purple-fuchsia), Hot Frost lipglass (medium pink)
  • Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
  • Substitutes: Dame’s Desire = Beautiful Iris; Royal Tour = Satellite Dreams; Climate Blue = Contrast; Femme-fi = Shroom; Don’t Be Shy = Well Dressed; Gladiola = Up the Amp + Girl About Town; Hot Frost = Cultured

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Violet pigment all over the lid as the base with the 249. On the inner lid, apply Dame’s Desire eyeshadow using the 239. Apply Royal Tour eyeshadow to the middle of the lid. Darken the outer lid using Climate Blue packed on and drag into crease using the 239. Darken crease with Climate Blue eyeshadow using the 239. Sweep Femme-fi underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Urban Decay Lust 24/7 Liner on lower lash line, and Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Don’t Be Shy blush using the 129. Apply Gladiola lipstick to lips, and then top with Hot Frost lipglass for color and shine.

I really love the eyes. Not so sure about the lips. 🙂 I’ve ordered both trios and this l/s and l/g, so am a bit shocked to hear you’re disappointed with them. 😮 Why don’t you like them? What will you be returning?

Christine Avatar

I returned the beauty powders and the trios. I kept the lipsticks, lipglasses, and nail polishes. The trios don’t work well forme -the textures are too chalky (or else too glittery like Fineshine). I just can’t justify keeping Wisteria trio JUST for Wisteria.

Thanks for replying, Christine. I got mine today, and I agree, the lightest shade in this trio is very “blah”. (Love the expression! :)) I’m still not sure about the Gladiola lipstick, bit too bright, but the Hot Frost is soooo pretty!!! Very chuffed with it. Will be trying out the other trio and the beauty powders if I can make myself destroy the pretty surface. 😉

I really like the eyes. I think I’d probably use Vanilla pigment as a base though, can’t really see the light purple color that much. But it’s still really pretty. I’m sad that you don’t like the trio.

Christine Avatar

I was SO surprised that the lighter purple shadow didn’t show up over the Violet. I had intended it to look really pretty, thinking it would lighten the base up, but the shadow itself was so blah that it didn’t do much of anything. 🙁

Thanks!

Wow, that’s such a pretty look! What products are you returning? I didn’t have the time or money to get this release, so it’d be nice to know which I should be saving my $$ on anyway! 😀

I do like the purple eyes and even the lips, although they are bright. Part of the reason I didn’t buy anything from Dame Edna- just too bright for me. Could I make a request? Could you go back to swatching the eye shadow colors? I look for your swatches the day after the new launches so I have an idea of what I want to buy and it’s easier- and quicker- to see the e/s colors in swatches rather than put together in a look. If it’s not too much trouble. I love the looks too!

Royal Tour is the only colour of the trio I really want – but I did get the holiday cool eye palette which has some purples so I think I’ll settle for that.

cloudburst Avatar

You know, I really like the lips – pair them with black liquid liner with the flick at the end & you have yourself a modern take on an 80’s look.

evo Avatar

i love purples but i passed on this entire collection.

saving my money for the brunette, blonde, redhead collection

but you have me wanting to do purple eyes tomorrow.

Tanya Avatar

Wow I think this is a really great look on you 🙂 I have been wanting to say this to you for several months now…but not really sure how to say it without it sounding negative, which is not what I want. I wish you would show more looks not with different colors BUT instead with “different” shadow placement.

I really like the way this eye looks BECAUSE it doesnt look like you have shadow on up to your brows. Does that make sense? I know you do…but so often in your looks it very obvious that you have a very bright light color just under your brows. In this look your shadow under your brow is so much more subtle than usual and it really makes you look much softer.

I really like this look and I really like YOU!!!

Gorgeous!!! you look so pretty in purples!!!
I went to MAC today and the girl put that trio on my eyes but didnt look good on me 🙁 It looks great the way you did your eyes i guess the pigment helps to give it that look. I did buy purple colours but for some reason they didnt have parfait amour so i got purple haze instead.
Happy New year Christine!!!!

Lil Avatar

Yeah, I am a little surprised you feel this way Christine, but I wasn’t really that impressed with the collection. I only got one palette, one highlight powder and one lipglass. But mind you, I had a 25% off employee discount. I’m curious what you’re returning too? I would definitely return all the lipsticks and the nail polishes.

Christine Avatar

Really? I feel like I haven’t been impressed by a MAC launch in far too long. The lipsticks are the highlight of the launch, but in the end, they’re not the most wearable. I returned the trios and the beauty powders–quality was lacking in all of them. I kept the lipsticks, lipglasses, and polishes. I doubt I’ll sport any of the lipsticks often, but they are different from other colors I own!

Shefali Avatar

I like the eyes, but I agree with you Christine that this launch is disappointing. I didn’t buy anything because of a few reasons:

The colors are not very wearable

The colors are easily duped

The highlighting powders had the sheen you mentioned and when worn off, the powders are chalky and not very interesting

The textures of the shadows were terrible

The packaging has stickers!! Why why why!? It’s a Fafi repeat!

In any case, the look you did is pretty and I’m interested in trying it!

Dave Avatar

Jilly B, Christine actually already did swatches of the eye shadows from the Dame Edna collection and then several days later did a look with them. The swatches are on page 5 right now.

Iliana Avatar

Hi Christine, happy new year!

I just have a quick question. You are allowed to return used items at MAC stores? I asked an MA here in Manila about it when I bought powder that’s too light on my face, and they said they won’t accept it anymore. I’m just wondering if it’s a rule in all MAC stores/counters. 🙂

love Avatar

I love this look on you! My fav colors are blues and purples, I have colors in my MAC collection to dupe this look. I too won’t be buying anything from this collection, nothing really strikes me.
I also love Up the amp, got the color when I first saw something similar on Rihanna.

Good Job!

Iliana Avatar

Thanks! 🙂 I thought it was a standard for all MAC stores. I was about to call the store and complain! By the way, I forgot to say that this is a pretty look on you, even with the bold lips and bold eyes combo. Happy new year!

lizzii Avatar

ahhh, i was wondering “why christine, why?” when i saw the bold lippie and eyes. then i read. haha. yeah, really glad i passed on gladiola. it looks EXACTLY like up the amp’s lovechild. i was considering getting the trio with blue flame [don’t know the name ::gasp!:: yeah, sorry] just because one of my MAs made it look amaaaaaazing. but nah. there’s a reason i didn’t get it the first time.

pia Avatar

yayyyy!!! gladiola is beautiful!!! I’m glad I’m getting it. Up the amp is much paler/cooler than gladiola imho. so yay!!!

You look awesome, Christine, and I definitely think that playing with bold on lips and eyes are still working for these colors. I definitely would copy this look.

lizzii Avatar

hence, why i said, “lovechild”. mix up the amp with love knot lipglass…same color. or up the amp w/ just a weee bit of girl about town….boom, gladiola,

Brianne Avatar

It looks like you got way better results with the shadows than I did! I thought the textures were difficult to work with when I tried them at the MAC counter 🙁

I have to be honest and say that I don’t care for the lipstick at all. Not just with that eye (and despite that I think it’s probably more flattering on your skin tone than it would be on many others), but the color just does not do it for me.

Linda Avatar

Pretty, pretty, pretty!!!

I can’t wait to get my hands on those 24/7 liners…

his NYE I will either rock MAC #2 or #12 Lashes that’s for sure…everything else… I don’t know yet! 😀

Claudia M. Avatar

I like the shadow, not feeling the lips. I think it’s a “look at my bright lipstick!!” as opposed to “check out my kisser ;-)”
I second Tanya’s opinion, I like that the bright/dark colors don’t reach the eyebrows. It’s more of an everyday look with bright purple =)

Bettina Avatar

I think it looks great but I myself probably would have chosen to tone down one or the other. I will either go all out on the eyes or all out on the lips but I can never seem to get myself to do both at once LOL

I do wish they still made dame’s desire and royal tour though, lovely shades of purples.

Bettina Avatar

well it looks great on you Christine, I myself am just not quite that bold. 🙂 I can’t over how amazing those purples on the eyes are though.
