  • Haul/Rediscoveries: Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Intense, Milk Makeup highlighters (replacements for the broken ones), Marc Jacobs Showstopper
  • Weekend plans: Mellan’s liver values are high, so he’s been acting, for lack of a better diagnosis, weird, but it’s consistent with how he acts whenever the liver values aren’t where they should be (and sometimes that happens for no particular reason), so I’m keeping him close and remain hopeful that his behavior will normalize soon.
  • What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: It’s usually all about picking and plotting what restaurants to eat at! I think if I visited an area that was particularly famous for specific landmarks or art or the like… I would definitely be keen to see those things as well.

Haul: ABH x Jackie Aina – I really love it.
Weekend Plans: babysitting tonight, pole tomorrow afternoon followed by going to get an oil change for my car, and rehearsal on Sunday for Extravaganza.
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: I honestly just end up going with the flow of whoever I’m with. I’m never really fussed about what we do, as long as it doesn’t get us arrested.

Haul: I haven’t posted in a while so this is a couple ulta hauls 🙂 Urban Decay lo-fi lip mousses in Boom and Echo (50% off for lipstick day). Love Beauty and Planet murumu butter & rose body lotion ($5 off a $10 purchase). SheaMoisture manuka honey & yogurt body wash (x2, they were bogo 40% off). BareMinerals instant perfection mini duo – finishing powder and matte lip in Juju.

Weekend plans: The last of the shopping and planning for our 3 week trip to Europe! We leave in 2 weeks!

What do you like to do when traveling to a new place: I always check atlas obscura, roadside america, yelp, the michelin guide, and click around on google maps! I love new local food, little out-of-the-way things, museums/galleries, public art, markets, parks and botanical gardens, monuments, architecture, etc. My yelp collection and google maps pins for our eurotrip are ridiculous lol.

I hope Mellan feels better soon.

Haul: It’s been a very good week for makeup! I got Colourpop Strawberry Shake and Just My Luck palettes, plus Super Shock eyeshadow single in the shade Bill. Love them all! ❤️ About halfway through the work week I had an extra-stressful day and decided to self-medicate with a new lipstick. Despite the fact that I really, really don’t need another lipstick in this shade range, I treated myself to MAC Hey Frenchie anyway. I have to say (again) that I absolutely adore the Love Me formula. (I had actually intended to buy NARS Roman Holiday, but it looks dreadful on me.)

Weekend plans: Visiting family, laundry, grocery shopping, and, hopefully, finding time to relax.

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place? A lot of advance planning. I’m not big on surprises, so I like to know as much as possible before we go.

Nancy T Avatar

Aww, Mellan. Hopefully, he begins to feel like his old self soon so that you don’t have to worry. Always disturbing when one of our fur-children (or human ones, too) is feeling out of sorts.

Haul: Nothing this week, except some things I forgot to list last FFHF. ColourPop Strawberry Shake palette, Sol Body Oil in Warm Gold, Bullz Eye Lite Stix and Wallaby Blush Stix. Received them on Wednesday, wore them yesterday for a very pretty, peachy pink look! Wallaby is more of a highlighter on me, though. Or a very dilute highlighting blush, at best? My Ace Beauté Oceanic Palette is due to arrive this afternoon! Been waiting 2 entire weeks to receive it.

Weekend plans: Meeting on Sunday. Cleaning for yearly building inspection by City of Scottsdale. If I catch a break, I’ll do my nails.

What do you like to do when you visit a new place? Mostly, just take in all the newness of the scenery and get myself acclimated to it before going on any big excursions!

I’m glad to hear Mellan’s cardiac health is good! I hope his liver values come back down soon.

Haul:
*Becca (50% off, and many thanks to the Temptalia Reader who alerted me to the clearance section of Becca’s site) — Global Light Chaser Perfector in Opal Flashes Jade (backup), Dream Flashes Bellini, Rose Quartz Flashes Seashell, and Topaz Flashes Gilt.

*ColourPop — Order #1: Strawberry Shake 9-Pan Palette; Designer Disney Lipsticks in Snow White, Tiana, Belle, and Cinderella; Blur Lux Lipstick in Superbloom; and Crème Lux Lipstick in Scorpio Moon. Order #2: Pressed Blush in Seed U Later and Shortcake; Prep & Set Duo (recommended by a friend); (sale) Ultra Glossy Lip in Sookie, Ultra Blotted Lip in Just a Crush, and Ultra Matte Lip in Chalk and Roll.

*Coloured Raine — $35 Mystery Box. Mine had: Lovelies Mini Palette; e/s single in S’mores; Focal Point GlowLighters in Cutie Pie; Liquid Lipsticks in Royal, Boss Babe, and Spiked Punch; Classic Lipsticks in Cherry Blossom, Affluence, and Chocolip.

*Geek Chic Cosmetics (lippie sale) — Joysticks Lipstick in La Vie En Rose, Star Gazer, Room 237, Take Over the World, and Magical Pegicorn; Butterlush Bloom Lipstick in Wolf’s Bane and Big Red’s Rooster Sauce; Star Jellies Gloss in Honey Bunny and Corruption; and Lip Zazz Liquid Lipsticks in Bio-Exorcist and So Kawaii.

Weekend plans: My husband and I are leaving later this morning for a fly-in in Arlington, WA. On the way home Sunday, we’re going to visit Paul Allen’s airplane museum in Everett. We’re taking our camper, and it won’t be too hot, so it should be a nice weekend.

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: We love to visit museums and natural sites/national parks.

I hope Mellan’s liver values get back to normal real soon. He should not scare his folks like that.

Haul/Rediscoveries: CYO Lifeworks Long Lasting Foundation—-there were some very positive reviews on YT so I thought I would check it out. It is really good, comparable to Fenty except for the abysmal shade range. There were testers available and even a mirror but the lighting was inadequate to really test, so I bought three shades (it costs $7) and one of them is perfect. I may buy some more before it is discontinued at the end of the year. However I have not changed my plan to get the PMG as soon as the Sephora sale starts. As for rediscoveries, concealer plus setting powder works better for me than eye shadow primers.

Week-end plans: Nothing really.

What do I like to do when I travel to a new place? I like seeing the day to day lives of people who live elsewhere so I try to pinpoint interesting neighborhoods that don’t contain tourist attractions. I always wander through supermarkets, farmer’s markets, bakeries, and if it is a foreign destination, pharmacies. I like local parks also. In order to get my husband to go along with this, I need to identify some local bars along the way.

Kitty Avatar

I hope Mellan’s liver values normalize soon.

Haul: Got SG highlighter in Cantata and cream shadow in Wish. Also got pressed shadows in colors: Winter Garden, Immortal, Mythical, Hydra, Dive, Troops, Magenta Dreams, The Greatest Gift, Golden Peach, Midnight Gold, Peace, Rover, Slayed, Princess Pay Pay, Strawberries & Cream, Pandora, Golden Rose, Golden Strawberry, Defiance, Sweetheart, Tippy Taupe (rebuy), San Diego (rebuy) and Grounds (rebuy).

Weekend plans include working in garden and researching restaurants and things to do for an upcoming trip.

When traveling to a new place, we like learning about and seeing local history, flora and fauna; eating at various restaurants and trying any local specialties and ethnic foods not available at home; getting in a hike somewhere (not too strenuous or lengthy though ;)); and visiting landmarks, monuments, national parks, etc.

AJ Avatar

Sending good thoughts for Mellan and his liver woes!

Haul/rediscoveries: Nothing this week.

Weekend plans: In a few hours I’m leaving for a belly dance retreat in New Mexico. No work! No wifi! Just dance and creativity and friends and the beautiful desert. I can’t wait.

When I travel to a new place, I am all about eating, drinking, and shopping local! I love good food, tea, cocktails, and handmade things. I like to explore! I love to go for a walk or hike, or check out a museum, or see a live performance. My travel philosophy is to have a loose framework but to give myself plenty of time for spontaneity in case I want to spend more or less time on something than I expected, or I randomly discover something along the way that I want to check out.

Mariella Avatar

Haul: I don’t think I bought anything at all this week.
Weekend plans: have a friend who came into town to go to my hairdresser (that’s how good she is – people travel from “the big city” to go to her!) so she’s staying over tonight; hope to get out to do some weeding at some point this weekend but the ground is so hard and dry; I hope we get some rain overnight; tomorrow – the gym!
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place: I really enjoy walking tours and I like seeing where people actually live or lived and work or worked rather than “sites”; I like it when the weather is cool enough to enjoy walking around neighbourhoods (the last two times I was in NYC, it was blisteringly hot and not enjoyable at all; I’ve decided since then to do much of my travel in the autumn).

Tracey E Avatar

Hi Mariella, I had to chuckle at your comment that your friend comes to town to have her hair done by your hairdresser. A few years ago, I made an appointment in my salon for my sister to have her hair cut and coloured during her visit with us. (There are 2 hairdressers in this small business and my husband and I go to between the two.) She said it was the best haircut she had all year, and she lives in “a big city.” She has visited us annually and I’m starting to think that she’s really visiting to have her hair cut and coloured, and seeing us is secondary. Ha!!

Deborah S. Avatar

Oh Mellan, I hope you start feeling and acting better soon, sweet boy.
Haul: So, I backed off on purchasing anything for the past couple of weeks in preparation for the Sephora sale. The only thing I did purchase this week was a WNW highlighter which hasn’t come yet. Right now the name is escaping me but it is a softer, slightly peach shade.

Weekend plans: I have begun a project on my floor in one room of the house. I am doing a bag flooring but substituting white paper for the brown paper bags that are normally used. It is a big project and as you can imagine, I am on the floor on my hands and knees a lot of the time. The room is 22 x 22 so this is going to take a while. Once my old bones get down on the floor they start screaming after a little bit and then trying to get up off the floor is a sight to see. If i videotaped it and submitted to America’s Funniest Videos, I would win for sure! I am also refinishing 4 pieces of furniture for my daughter’s new apartment. She and I both love the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey so I am using that colour along with white on all of the pieces.

Travel: I would be lying if I didn’t include food in my answer somewhere because when you live in a small town that only has one restaurant, you start to crave something else. Eating out and trying local cuisine was a huge component of our trip to Europe but for me the biggest factor is seeing the area. While I like seeing certain attractions, it is more the general landscape that I love. Sure, seeing and climbing on the Eiffel Tower is a once in a lifetime experience and not going there when you are in Paris would be crazy but I enjoyed seeing the area around the Eiffel Tower and people watching as much as the tower.

Haul: A new magnifiying mirror because I broke my [very] old one, a couple of new acrylic organizers (to serve as a kick in the butt to start decluttering all the old stuff I never use, which I did last night!), and the ABH x Jackie Aina palette. This is actually my first Anastasia palette; I had a lot of Ulta points I couldn’t figure out what to use on, so after my discount and point redemption I only paid a couple dollars.
Weekend plans: Continuing to reorganize my hoard and catsitting for my parents while they’re out of the country.
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place? I also like to see what local restaurants are different and interesting, ha ha. If there are any particularly weird or unique places, or good museums, I enjoy those too.

Sarah Avatar

Poor pup. Get well soon, little guy!

Haul/Rediscoveries: Not much, I picked up the new mini color palette from Sugarpill and the Futurism IV and V palettes from Kaleidos. Now, if anyone is thinking about trying Kaleidos, my advice is DO IT. Their shadows are special. I don’t have anything quite like them in my collection in terms of formula and the shimmers…I don’t want to be repetitive but they are truly special.

Weekend plans: Not a lot, I don’t think. I would like to try to write. That would be nice.

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: Shop and eat, mostly. I hardly travel so I’m straining to figure out how to accurately answer this question, but in the rare instances I’ve traveled I’ve mostly just shopped and ate. I do like visiting attractions like zoos, so if a city has a zoo I’ll make a day of it.

I hope Mellan feels like himself soon. When humans liver enzymes are elevated it manifests as confusion, jaundice ,fatigue and sometimes leg /abdominal pain. I’ve had the sweetest patients become belligerent when their liver enzymes are highly elevated. Drinking water and the healthy diet should help.

Haul: I broke down and ordered an expensive House of Sillage lip stick case and bright red lip stick refill. The case is shaped like a bow with crystals on it. Very pretty, hope I love the lip stick formula.

Weekend Plans: Hurt my back while putting on my sock, lol. Terrible pain. And had to stay on bedrest for 2 days. Back still hurts so I’m chilling home this weekend and seeing the Orthopedic doctor on Monday.

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: Lots of sight seeing, observing the locals and enjoying their foods. I love going on tours, seeing shows, shopping and dancing.

Tracey E Avatar

I hope you feel better soon, Denise. I had out-of-the-blue back pain for about 16 hours and it was, by far, the worst pain I have ever experienced (and I live with a chronic pain condition). I hope you find relief soon!

Mellan is such a trooper!

Haul:
I finally took the plunge and received just today the Anastasia palettes in Subculture, Soft Glam, Norvina, and Jackie Aina. Jackie Aina’s palette is what finally convinced me. I’m excited to play with them this weekend, especially after reading that Anastasia designed them to be used in quads which makes experimenting much less anxiety-ridden for me.

Rediscovery: MAC Nordstrom palette, I think it was called 2 different things – Nordstrom Naturals and then Macy’s sold it as Modern Neutrals or something but I’ve really been enjoying it, especially the 1st row.

Weekend plans: Laying low. other than chores. Facial and mani on Sunday!

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: Restaurants and I like to check out the local libraries. I like seeing the different design structures for them and I just love being around all those books, especially in older libraries. There is a nostalgia and a commonality to them that I find very comforting and it grounds me, especially if I’m feeling homesick.

Stephanie Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: Smashbox x Vlada palette for haul; yogurt for a rediscovery. I go through phases with food, and I have been obsessed with yogurt the past couple of weeks because my love for it has been reignited.
Weekend plans: Some reading for work and for school and maybe finally finishing Skyrim.
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: We always look for bookstores. Of course we go to the landmark, huge bookstores, like Powell’s in Portland or The Strand in NYC, but I love hole-in-the-wall bookstores too. In NOLA, on Dauphine Street, we went to this entirely haunted and super over-packed bookstore where I found two really awesome books. The owner and I got to chatting, and it turns out he is from the Bay Area, CA too.

Alecto Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: No real rediscoveries, though I bought some trays to store my lip products out where they can be seen every time I sit down to do my makeup, and I’m hoping that will prompt me to get back into wearing them regularly (and THEN I’ll be able to post about some rediscoveries). 🙂

I did haul some The Ordinary products from Ulta (Alpha Arbutin 2%, 100% Cold=Pressed Virgin Marula Oil, Natural Moisturizing Factors, Granactive Retinoid 2%, Ascorbyl Glucoside 12%, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%). I also picked up three of the Disney Villain highlighters (Poor Unfortunate Souls, Fairest of All, Mistress of All Evil), because … I need more highlighters? No, I mean … they’re unique to my collection? Wait, no … they’re … they’re … oh alright! They’re Villains! Yes, ColourPop got me; and no, I don’t want to talk about it.

[sigh] Also got the Venus eyeliner, as well as some oils (Watermelon, Strawberry, Tsubaki).

Weekend plans: I have so much to do, that I don’t even know where to start. I genuinely don’t know how to answer this..

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: Find a private public place where I can sit and watch people — just sit back out of the way and watch people living their everyday lives. I also like to find a truly private place (far from all people), and sit quietly while soaking up the environment.

Sorry to hear that Mellon’s liver is acting up and is affecting him in different ways. I hope he is better soon.
Haul: Nothing at the moment
Rediscoveries: That my Stila In The Garden palette is a stunner when travelling.
Weekend Plans: Still on our holiday. For the past week or so we were out of Internet range up in the Far North of Queensland. At the moment we are travelling back down south along the Queensland coast. It is a big state. Today we are in Gladstone and tomorrow we are heading to Noosa Heads.
Today’s question is really relevant to me!
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place? I always like to check out the major points of interest/tourist attractions of the area – whether it be a nature reserve, art gallery, beach front etc. I was lucky on this trip because my son David, checked all the great restaurants of each place we have visited because he loves good food.
As I have a new mobile phone, learning to work all the components has been a challenge for me and a test of patience for David (who is naturally gifted in this area).

Kuávsui Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: I finally got myself the Laura Mercier loose setting powder and boy am I glad I did! It is so smooth and keeps me looking 100% for a lot longer, and with it I have also been able to try the setting my primer with powder & setting spray trick before foundation – works like a dream! I also ordered the Jackie Aina palette, but I won’t get to play with it until next Friday, because…
Weekend plans: It’s my birthdayyyy! Sadly I have to travel for work on Sunday and I can’t party too much.
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place? Find somewhere to eat, somewhere peaceful to sit, and some activity for a couple hours, but that’s it!

DVa Avatar

Haul: Stila’s new liquid eyeshadow Suede Shade in Nude Awakening. I’ve worn it for one day and love it as a completely nude, summer (natural makeup) look. You can layer over it, but on it’s own it a beautiful flesh tone.

Weekend: We are in the final stretch of a new home reno, and moving in shortly. It’s been a whole summer process and we are eager to see it complete. This weekend we need to paint the downstairs (upstairs was professionally done) so a new fireplace mantle/surround and tile can be completed (among other things).

Travel: I look at possibilities in the area we’ll be, but never schedule anything if possible. I travel so much for work, and I’m scheduled to the minute in some cases, I prefer the freedom to either explore, or just sit by the pool if I want.

Tracey E Avatar

I hope Mellan’s liver values normalize, so he feels more like himself!

Haul: 2 weeks:
– HBC ($10 off): Chanel Rouge Allure Liquid Powder in 974 Timeless and Rouge Allure Velvet Extreme in 130 Rouge Obscur;
– Selfridges: (A/W 20190 Suqqu Designing Color Eyes quad in 14 Irourushi

Weekend Plans: No hard plans. Maybe look at Sept. travel that we may have. Also want to pop into Sephora for samples of foundations I’d like to consider for the summer sale. My local Sephora started carrying a selection of Charlotte Tilbury products and may be expanding the brand’s presence in the coming weeks. It’s possible they may have CT’s new foundation when Sephora launches it on August 29, so am thrilled beyond belief that I won’t have to guess or go to a larger market. This welcome news comes against a backdrop of a closed Boston Store and lost counters like Chanel and Bobbi Brown (full counter) and numerous Sephoras that don’t carry brands that I’m interested in, like CT, Kevyn Aucoin, Natasha Denona (part or full range).

What do you like to do when traveling to a new place? I like to find out where local people like to eat and relax. I also scour the museums, concert halls, and arenas/stadiums for events taking place.

Nikki Avatar

Best of luck to Mellan!
Haul/Rediscoveries: No makeup this week, but Thursday night I placed my first order with Sixteen92, a Fort Worth-based indie/boutique fragrance brand that specializes in hand-mixed small-batch scents, usually literary-themed. This summer is their 5th anniversary, so they released a limited-edition capsule collection based on classic ’80s movies. I bought Save Ferris, the fragrance notes for which the brand bills as “(f)unnel cakes & lemonade from Wrigley (F)ield, salted pretzels, bright blue skies, cool Lake Michigan breeze, Bueller… Bueller…” (I’m pretty sure everything after salted pretzels is a joke).
Weekend plans: Ran errands yesterday, worked all day today and am in the middle of the weekly SVU marathon. Tomorrow I have a prescription to pick up, but plan to spend most of the day relaxing.
What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: Shopping and eating are kind of constants. I usually try to find some sort of activity that interests me during the planning phase-if I can’t find one, I’ll explore the area.

Celesta Avatar

Haul: Sugarpill Funsize palette and Lumi pigment, Kaleidos 3-palette deal with the two new summer palettes, and the Astro Pink palette. I’m really excited to try this brand!

Rediscoveries: Nothing new to speak of. I’ve been in a pretty happy place with my make up lately, tho I do have an eyeshadow problem.

Weekend plans: Sadly, my niece passed away unexpectedly a few of days ago. I was with family for her viewing and funeral.

What do you like to do when you travel to a new place?: Find a good restaurant that’s reputable by the locals.
