Rant & Rave: Too Faced

Tell us what you love and hate about...

Too Faced

They’ve been steadily improving–in general, not always–their products, I think, and they have hit on some good formulas/star products in the last few years, too. I had major issues with quality with their releases in the past (particularly eyeshadow palettes).

Rave:
* Complexion products. Some of their complexion products are amazing. The Born This Way Super Coverage Concealer is not only a great concealer (minimal creasing, good coverage), but it comes is a huge size and tons of shades. The foundation is also great, but I would actually use the concealer as foundation rather. 😀 Now… if the concealer come in a squeeze tube or with a pump (I don’t like doe foot applicators) that would be even more amazing.
* Shadow Insurance. One of the best eye primers I have tried (and it comes in an hygienic squeeze tube). And it’s been out for such a long time and they didn’t released other stuff; and this is OK. Why change something that is a staple and works great?

Rant:
* Too many releases. The brand right now to me looks all over the place, a mess of constant releases that make no sense. Most of the releases are just seasonal and have poor quality, forgotten over time. I just wish a company with so much money would invest more in a core line of great `old` products, tried-and-true, invest in research to make old formulas and packaging even better.
* Too childish and colorful packaging. This is just personal opinion, but I like a classic sleek look in packaging. All the pinks, golds, sparkles, crystals, dogs, unicorns, cookies, hearts and chocolate bars are just not my vibe.
* Scented make-up. Again, very personal, but I simply don’t want my eyeshadow to smell like chocolate and my blush of peach. I don’t want any scent / fragrance in my make-up, but food related scents (except vanilla) are the worst.
* It’s fake and slightly shallow. The last (hopefully) very personal opinion is that the brand in itself and the owners are quite fake, playing on marketing gimmicks. Even the addition of more shades (including more deeper/darker complexions) seemed done just as a marketing thing, rather than a true stand of inclusion; even the releases targeted to animal welfare seemed forced, rather coming from love of pups. Make-up is shallow in the end, but Too Faced seems to make things even more shallow. It’s just the vibe I get from the brand and although I like some of their products, it’s not a brand I would say I trust.

I like a LOT of Too Faced products – many of their e/s palettes, bronzers and their Peach Blur pressed powders but my rant would be the totally unnecessary adding of “themed” scents to products, ESPECIALLY eye shadows. Honestly – peanut butter scent or even chocolate? When so many people are looking for unscented products, (I’m not sensitive to fragrance but I know many are), why on earth would they add scent just to be “cute” and fit in with a theme? Also, I tried their liquid lipsticks when they first launched, hoping I’d find a nice, long-wearing, long lasting lipstick but I hated them….felt sort of like I’d painted my lips with a Sharpie marker, they were so dry and drying.

Rave: Matte Chocolate Bar, Life’s a Festival, and the Just Peachy palettes. I’ve hit multiple pans on all of them. They’re my go-to for mattes, laying down with just the opacity I want- more than Viseart but less than ABH.

My big Rant is the name of that flavored, loose highlighter: Pat the Pu$$. Am I supposed to put this on my precious lady? Is that why it’s flavored? *shudder* And if you’re going to talk about genitals, use a grown-up word! Faux-naughty words irritate me to no end.

SaffyTaffy Avatar

But also, “pat the &^%$” is something that collab woman says when she dances and touches her crotch.
Ugh I can’t even type it. uuughhhhh.
Like, I’d buy “Too Faced Flavored Underpants Dust” or whatever, I’m not a prude…

I love their lip glosses. Their highlighters though I’m not a big fan of. Their candlelight glow, which appears pink and white , is gold. No matter how I tried it it was gold. Their diamond light highlighter was definitely pink but their was gold in it too and it was very dry. I love their diamond highlighter brush . I’m going to continue to buy their lipgloss but I don’t think I can buy any of their powder products, the colors are just way off .

I feel like Too Faced is one of those brands that’s like “let’s throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks.” They have a lot of gimmicky stuff, but some of it is very good in spite of that. The Peach Perfect setting powder is a great example of this for me; even with the scent and the taste (which is so weird!!!), it is still the best setting powder in the best packaging I have ever tried. I’d rather smell that peachy scent than a perfume-y smell, which is what some other loose powders have.

RANTS: Putting sodium saccharine in palettes without warning labels. I’m not allergic to it, but people with sulfa allergies are. I have sensitive eyes. TF’s fragrances haven’t bothered my eyes yet, but it’s a concern every time I try a palette. Low quality holiday collections with the same colors every year; repetitiveness of eyeshadow shades in general; foundations tend to run really warm. The PB and Honey Palette was one of the worst palettes I’ve ever seen any brand put out. They got rid of the Love Flush blushes, boo! I’m allergic to their mascaras.

RAVES: Cute, fun packaging. They have some great classics: Shadow Insurance is still the best eye primer for my oily lids. Milk Chocolate Soleil is still on of the best bronzers for fair skin on the market. I love the Hangover Primer, as well. Also, their quality seems to be improving again after a couple years of crap. Too Faced Sugar Cookie Palette is an absolute gem that I hear few people talking about. I adore the Natural Face Palette, Life’s a Festival, most of the chocolate palettes, most of the 9-pan palettes, Clover, and Gingerbread. I even ended up liking Sweet Peach, which I bought off a friend eventually (the launch of Sweet Peach would be one of my all-time rants against the brand). I enjoyed the Tutti Frutti Collection. Their were some stunning shades in the Throwback lipsticks. TF supports animal charities and are CF.

ShariP and anyone with sulfa allergies, not all Too Faced products have sodium saccharine in them. I too am allergic and after reading Rachel’s post (thank you Rachel), I jumped up and checked an eye palette I purchased last week and another from last month. One has sodium saccharine and the other one doesn’t. Fortunately for me, I hadn’t gotten around to using my newest purchase.

SaffyTaffy Avatar

That’s right, they got rid of those blushes that everyone said were some of the best on the market, and the packaging was so nice and (for them) restrained. 🙁
Did you wear that fab metallic blue in the Throwback?

Rave: Born This Way Concealer. It’s great, hydrating and doesn’t crease too much, with a great shade range, and it’s HUGE.

Rant: The packaging can be overly cutesy/childish. The layout of their some of their palettes, i.e. sometimes with one or two huge rectangular shades – which is almost always a light beige shade that I can get minimal use out of. They don’t always The whole “rich lives matter” thing was extremely tasteless and disrespectful.

Rave: I love their packaging and Born This Way concealer, it is one of the few I’ve tried that doesn’t burn my eyeballs.

Rant: Scented makeup. The blush/highlighter I can stand a little bit, but the eyeshadow really gets to me.

I’m just not a fan of the brand at all. Even their name bothers me…..I’m from a generation where being two (too) faced meant you said one thing to a person’s face and then talked/went behind their backs to others.
I’m not a fan of the fragrances they put in their products. Sometimes that peach palette will actually turn my stomach when I first open it…. though now, thanks to Rachel, I understand why I have trouble with their makeup. I’m allergic to sulfa.
Lastly, though it is really shallow, their products are too cutesy. I prefer a more sleek, classic, elegant look. Black and gold, white and gold, rose gold, etc. I know I’m being shallow, but there it is.
I do give them credit for being cruelty free and supporting pet programs.

Rave : As someone who has a quite a bit of Too Faced products , I love the cutesy stuff . I know it may be childish but I love it . The eyeshadow palettes that I have from them were the Lifes a Festival which I loved and wore quite a bit . And a few of their older duos from early 2008 . Plus I really like Too Faced lip products .Oh and I loved the glitter glue and Shadow Insurance better than UD’s primer potion
Rant : there is a lot of releases to keep up with but I try not to be someone who buys everything unless it something I will use . Plus I get bored of some the neutral palettes they release. Oh and the unnecessary items like Mascara Melt off felt a bit overpriced.

Rant: I have a lot of TooFaced products and use them regularly. I don’t mind the scented products. Most of the time their packaging is good.

Rave: I haven’t been interested in any of their releases this year because they’re too repetitive or gimmicky. One thing I really don’t like about the brand as a whole is that they can’t seem to make up their mind about who they are. So many different collections and themes; it’s inconsistent, unpredictable and doesn’t feel well thought out. Their holiday releases in general are over hyped and not their usual quality, but I really hate how they have one release for Sephora and one for Ulta, because inevitably the Ulta release is like the red headed stepchild.

Rave: I actually think TF has turned a corner is now producing some really good products for the last year or so.
They are not releasing products every second week either.
Rant: The awful names that the brand still chooses for some of its products and the occasional inconsistencies in quality.
The brand is still fixated on overly cutsey-gooey kind of products and there are times when I wonder what age group are they focusing on.

rave! so I know everyone here absolutely hates the scents but as someone who is allergic to most perfumes, I have never had a reaction to a too faced products! and hey, why shouldn’t my adorable highlighter smell fantastic? I personally think it’s really adorable and yes, I am a teen but you know what, it’s still cute.
rant! the brand itself really seems so selective honestly. almost like a clique. besides that I feel like some of the eyeshadow pallets repeat themselves colorwise. I do have a slight issue with the latex glosses as they’re a touch sticky, but that’s not too bad. my biggest issue is most of the face palltes will never work for me. this being said MOST of them don’t as I have the skin color of glue and all of these dark orange tones bronzers aren’t going to cut it.

either way I think, just like every other brand, there are hits and misses! like the glosses, they’re still fantastic and majorly pigmented, as well as the face palltes have some great blushes and high liters. makeup is subjective, and I feel lots of people are way too judgemental.

Rave: I love the fragrances! That seems to be an unpopular opinion, though. I love the cutesy packaging. Too Faced might be my current favorite brand. I’ve been wearing the Tickled Peach mini palette almost every day since I bought it. The smell makes me happy and the packaging is a sturdy metal case.

Rant: I’ve got nothin’.

Bonnie Avatar

I love that they do cute themed collections, generally with a palette and them some other types of makeup. This is the kind of thing that inspires me to buy and gets me excited to use it. I’m in the minority, but I feel like we rarely see new releases anymore, and I’d like to see a few more.

I really like their Better Than Sex Mascara also, I think the only one I like better is Benefit’s Bad Gal Bang. And their Born This Way concealer is pretty awesome as well.

While not everything they release is for me, overall, I’m a fan.

Marte Avatar

Rave: The Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer cannot be beaten! I’ve tried Nars, Fenty, ABH, UD… Nothing keeps my eyeshadow on like TF <3 I also have some eyeshadows that I quite like, from annolder 9 pan palette.

Rant: I absolutely can’t stand scented face products. I like to wear perfume to smell nice, my face does not have to be separately scented.

Jane Avatar

Like a lot: that I am sometimes pleasantly surprised by eye palettes I have of theirs that I NEVER planned to purchase.
Don’t care for: the “peaches” theme EVERYWHERE and the girlie-ness of it all, but sometimes the smells are nice (if not too overwhelming).
