Are facial masks part of your regular skincare routine? Which ones?

I’m really inconsistent with face masks, but I have been trying to spend at least one evening each week as a more “pampering” moment where I DO use a face mask. I’ve been going through some of the sheet masks I’ve purchased, mostly by Dr. Jart+ as well as Mahalo’s Petal mask.

To be honest, I am really not into sheet masks because they often come in aluminum foil sheaths and here you have all these ingredients that you want to absorb into your skin and first these damp and absorbent contents are in contact with that. As a science reporter, I believe in precaution. In other words, while the research is being done, you avoid rather than trust it’s all okay. And there is research showing an association between aluminum and Alzheimer’s. And while not yet absolutely definitive, I prefer to be on the safe side.

No I don’t use any facial masks. My skin is way too sensitive and I find that as I’ve gotten older (60+), the less I do to my skin using these masks and treatments, the better. I’ve got nice smooth skin too (I get compliments on it frequently, with some women asking me what I do to get it like that), so I think that I must have done the right thing most of my life in avoiding these treatments and just making sure I always had sunscreen on. Genetics help too, of course.

I’m not disparaging anyone who uses any of these masks or treatments, but I do have the perspective of aging (and seeing firsthand in myself and other family and friends what happens in using or not using certain treatments over the years). Suffice it to say that anything that burns or causes redness, flaking or peeling is something that is perhaps to be avoided, if one looks at long term consequences.

No, not really… I’ll use the occasional mask, particularly if I get a free sample, but even when I used them regularly, I never found they made any noticeable difference. I think if one has a thorough, diligent skincare routine, then the additional effort of a mask isn’t necessary.

Yes – I use masks daily whether it’s getting up early and putting one on pre-shower and letting it soak in while I’m going about my morning routine (or crawl back in bed for another 15 minutes) or after my work day. I have quite a few from Peter Thomas Roth, Youth To The People, Mahalo Skin Care, Herbivore, Tatcha, Drunk Elephant, Sisley Paris, Biologique Rechereche, Glo, Omorovicza and May Lindstrom. I have a jade roller and am using the last of my beloved Decleor oils and will start on some Herbivore oils next. This all started about 4 or 5 years ago with just some Sephora sheet masks for fun and then I fell down a rabbit hole. Now it’s a thing and I look forward to the ritualized self care.

I love masks of all kinds but like you, Christine, I am pretty irregular in usage. I have been trying to be better because I have so many of them and what good are they just lying there. When I did my update to skin care and picked up several knew items during the Sephora sale, I purchased the Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti Aging Bi-phase peel. It is honestly the first skin care product that I have ever purchased that I can feel it working on my skin. It offers a nice gentle exfoliation. It says to use it 2-3 times per week and so I have been faithful to that since the sale. I also like several of the Dr. Jart masks and the Rose Fresh Hydration Sleeping Mask, which I use every night.
I have long wanted to try the Mahalo masks as Tara raves about the products but I haven’t actually taken the plunge. I need to do a little more investigating to see what would be best for older skin and very dry skin, although, for some reason lately, my skin has not been behaving like my usual dry skin. I am not sure whether to chalk it up to the response to the Fresh Hydration mask or the Ren Day Cream deluxe sample that I got but my skin has been looking much plumper.

Not as a firmly scheduled part of my routine, no. I do use masks, though! Different ones for different purposes, depending on what my skin needs at that time. One of my favorites is the GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment mask for whenever I’m dealing with breakouts or congested pores. If my skin is feeling dehydrated, I enjoy using Tony Moly Moisturizing I’m Aloe sheet mask. To tighten up pores and yet not dry out my skin, I love Skinfood Egg White Pore Mask. These are my most loved, most used masks for when I feel the need.

I use a pore mask combo (charcoal then clay) for clogged pores on my nose and a glycolic mask a few times a month. I have tried sheet masks but I don’t like the feel of them on my face. Lately I have been thinking that it is time to be less aggressive in my skin care but I have not figured out whether to eliminate the stronger treatments like masks or the daily serums.

No, I haven’t tried a facial mask because I’m a bit careful about how they would work on my sensitive skin. My skin is in pretty good condition and I moisturize using facial oils and both day and night moisturizers. I don’t over exfoliate either. So I am reluctant to try them.
I will be interested to read what others here have to say about them.

I don’t use masks. I’ve never found them to be effective and I just don’t have the time to sit there and wait for them to “work”. I use serums diligently in my skincare routine and I find them to be much more effective than masks.

I love pampering my skin with masks, I just don’t do it often enough. I’m trying to get better at that. I’m not faithful to one brand, Glam Glo is nice. I need moisturizing and smoothing for my skin and I don’t like the feel of sheet masks so I always use cream masks. I’m not afraid to mix something up with ingredients in my kitchen too.

Yes, LOVE a good mask. I like Origins Pink Clay mask and Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin mask for exfoliating, Revolution Charcoal and Aztec Secret clay masks if I’m a bit spotty or hormonal, Missha Snail sleeping pack or Origins Drink Up hydrating masks for an added moisture hit, Tony Moly Banana cream sleeping mask and Natio Rosewater deep moisture mask because they smell delicious and Mizon Vital Up with lavender sheet mask always leave me feeling super relaxed.

I might go and put on one now! 🙂

I’ve dabbled with masks, but I don’t consider them a necessary step in skincare. My face has gotten better in the past few years, and I don’t feel like it needs MORE, but I have occasionally toyed wit the idea of using moisturizing masks on my neck and decolletage, as those are two areas of my body that could use more pampering in a gentle and nurturing sort of way.

Sarah Avatar

No, not a regular part. I will use and enjoy one occasionally (usually get them as a gift or sample), but I don’t have the desire to use them all the time.

I’ve tried both K-beauty and Lush brand ones and I liked most of them. I’ve tried a bunch of K-beauty brands and can’t remember the names of all of them, but I generally like the ones with green tea as a featured ingredient. They make my face soft and dewy for a day or two, but nothing too amazing that I would add them to a routine. I like them more for the relaxation/spa feeling tbh.

The only one I didn’t really like was the Lush Cupcake fresh face mask. It was a bit drying and I don’t like the feeling of smearing chocolate on my face lol
