I’ve tried several from Maybelline to Revlon to Estee Lauder, and several others, but I find them all to be pretty much the same. They’re also not a part of my everyday routine, so I find the whole idea to be overrated. Spending more than $5.00 is really unnecessary. I realize there are a few women (or men) who may need them, but most don’t.

Most Overrated: I personally think any of those heated lash curlers that just look like mascara spoolies/combs are overrated.

Most Underrated: I really LOVE MAC’s Half Lash Curler!! Yes, I would like to use a full curler because it’s a bit quicker, but even Shu’s doesn’t do the job for me. I can get every lash super curled with the half lash curler from MAC. I’m sure other brands would be just as good, but the only half curler I’ve tried is the one from MAC.

Phoebe Avatar

Noooo! I love the heated lash curlers. I have never found a regular manual lash curler that fits my eye shape. They all pinch somewhere. My Panasonic heated curler is indispensable to me. It works best after I’ve put on mascara and it had dried.

Miss J Avatar

Hi, Phoebe! I’m happy you’ve found something that works for you! I’ve never found a full lash curler that works for my eye shape, either. I have really stick straight lashes that grow out and down, and while the heated curlers separated my lashes nicely (and helped to blend my natural lashes into falsies), I found that they never really curled my lashes.

At least we have both found solutions to our lash curling woes! Pinched lids and/or lashes poking down into eyes IS NOT FUN! Haha.

Phoebe Avatar

I’ll have to try the MAC half lash curler, if you have problems finding a curler that fits your eyes, too! I’d love to be able to just clamp and go. The only thing I don’t like about the heated curler is that I have to wait for it to heat up, then hold my lashes in a curled shape (kind of like when you put on mascara?) for a few seconds. The whole process takes a couple of minutes instead of 30 seconds.

Most overrated: This isn’t known as overrated, but I hated the NYX Eyelash Curler. It was the worst one I ever tried.

Most underrated: Revlon’s Silver Curler. I bought mine back in 2007, and it’s been with me ever since. I reserve the Shu Uemura for my pro kit.

Laura Avatar

I had my old school revlon one since high school about 10 yrs ago, and just bought a new one that darker sliver with red pads and LOVE it. i replaced the pads maybe 3 or 4 times on the first one. Its $7 and awesome!

dtan0914 Avatar

That’s funny because the NYX eyelash curler is my favorite! I’ve used many an eyelash curler over the past (Shu, Sephora, Revlon, etc) and I think the NYX one just fits my eyes perfectly. I gave a set to my bff as well and she likes it… I guess it just depends on eye shape?

Liz Avatar

I don’t know about under-rated or over-rated. The one I hear about most is the Shu Uemura one. I’ve never tried it, so I can’t weigh in. I like eyelash curlers and do find it necessary to curl my lashes every couple of days. Otherwise, my lashes start to get in the way of my vision. I currently love Kevyn Aucoin’s The eyelash curler. It curls nicely without that strange bent angle that I’ve gotten from other curlers.

Ryou Avatar

Most overrated is definitely Shu Uemura. It doesn’t even come with spare pads, ugh.

Most underrated is Koji’s Curving Eyelash Curler. The pads are really good and it really does fan my lashes out. I think The Muse did a review on it, and it really is THAT good! It comes with a case, too, which is good because eyelash curlers are really awkward to store.

Pia Avatar

most overrated: shu, hands down. they don’t have pad refills because they actually want you to buy a new one every year. really? they actually have it written on the box, at least back in 2005, when i was looking for refills six months after i bought my first (and last) shu curler.
most underrated: tweezerman. pad refills easily available. same high quality as their tweezers.

Julie Avatar

Shu’s eyelash curler is the BEST…why? Because the curling pad is made out of silicon it is longer lasting than other brands I’ve tried. They don’t pinch and curl all of my lashes with only a few crimps. And you don’t need to use a heavy hand, you still get great curls and the pads will last longer. I have had mine for over 4 years and only recently had to use the replacement pad.

~ Thanks for this great post!….I agree with all you shared…Review the Hot Lashes one~!
I am always looking for tips about eyelashes, mascara, as I have really such super straight lashes and when a curl lasts makes my eyes look bigger and gorgeous..

I so love sharing with others about great products I have tried ~ The best ever“ eyelash curler I have ever found is the Hot Lashes eyelash curler, makeup Artist kit. Loved the reviews on Amazon and was impressed. There is also a site of the same name HotLashes.com.

This curler is exactly like the gold Shu Uemura curler with a great 24K gold plated curler and this small pink heater base. Keeps my straight lashes curling till the next day….and no crimp, only a curl..I so HTH~

Overrated: Shu Uemura. It’s definitely a nice quality lash curler but there are no refills. I find it ridiculous to have to buy another lash curler.

Underrated: Japonesque. The one I bought, came with 3 refills. It works really well too.

Angel Avatar

Shu is awful on me. I’ve purchased it twice and ended up giving it away both times. It’s not long enough to fit all of my eyelashes in, so the outer lashes get pinched and wonky. And I don’t get a nice curl either, I get the dreaded L shape.

Revlon eyelash curlers are great. They are my go to, everyday curler. I also like Tarte’s a lot. I get a nice curl and its long enough to fit all my lashes.

Roxy A. Avatar

Overrated: Shu – It’s a shame they pulled out of stores in the US and they don’t sell refills. But, I agree, they work the best.

Underrated: Japonesque – Free refills! You can’t go wrong on that. But I find the travel (pink) curler works better than the full-sized.

Mariella Avatar

the only one I know first hand, have owned and used is the Shu Uemura one. I got it because it was highly rated; I rarely use it because, to be honest, I don’t find it makes all that big a difference.

Paula Avatar

overrated : shiseido eyelash curler. I had such high hopes but it pinched me as badly as a mac or revlon

Underrated: Koji curlers are my holy grail curler, a perfect fit for my japanese eyes.

Tovah Avatar

Shu is totally overrated.

Someone in their PR department needs to get a big raise.

Maybe I just never caught on to how to use it, but I really don’t think it’s any betteer than ALOT cheaper brands. However, since it was pricey, I’m determined to use it or someday learn to use it.

Audrey Avatar

Overrated: Shiseido — only works for almond shaped eyes

Underrated: Sephora — I get a great curl every time.

Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler is so worth it. It doesn’t sell refills but Shiseido and Tarte do, and both fit the Shu curler and have an elasticity similar to Shu’s pads. I especially like that the Tarte refills are purple and shimmery. 🙂

jan Avatar

overrated=elfs, hard to move it up the lash to get a natural curl, totally crimps my eyelashes into an L shape,
underrated=revlon, easy to maneuver, easy to fully curl the lash and not crimp it, also claires’ blinged out lash curler for the same reasons, plus it’s pretty!

Laurie Avatar

Overrated: SUQQU eyelash curler. Just doesn’t fit my eye shape, and every time I used it, it hurt my eyes 🙁

Underrated: None. Shu uemura and Chanel are my go-to curlers. Chanel fits my eye shape perfectly, but Shu is my first eyelash curlers. Love them both.

Maggie Avatar

Great post! I’m always on the lookout to see what works great for people other than the “icon.”

Overrated: Shu Uemura–shape of the curve just doesn’t fit right against my eyes so I have to carefully maneuver it to get the right curl.

Underrated: Tweezerman Procurl–I believe it comes with 3 or 4 refill pads and fits my eye better. I think 15minbeautyfanatic did a review on this if anyone wants to check it out…

Lindsay Avatar

I’m not sure of overrated ones. Revlon never worked for me, and I love my Shu one to death. Underrated is definitely Japonesque!! When I learned Shu was no longer carried at Sephora, I tried Japonesque and I might even like theirs better. Its shape is slighter wider, which works better on my eye shape

Michelle Avatar

Overrated: Elf eyelash curler.
Underrated: Lancôme eyelash curler. Lancôme now owns the rights to the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. It’s as if the Shu Uemura curler is available again.

holly Avatar

Overrated – Shu Uemura. Because they’re hand made, there are defects and I got a defective one that CUT off all my eyelashes! They tried to compensate me with falsies but I rarely wear false eyelashes. Took 6 months for them to look normal again. Just awful.

Underrated – Lancome. Man, I love this curler. It’s curved nicely so it fits my eye and it lasts a long time. 🙂

Allie Avatar

Overrrated: The Sally Hanson ones. I heard really good things about it and it ended up pinching my lids so badly that I couldn’t wear makeup/contacts for a month.
Underrated: The Shiseido one keeps my lashes curled all day, gives a very natural curl, and never pinches!

Mar Avatar

Most overrated: sorry to say… Shue Uemura
It’s a good curler but it’s nothing special and it’s pretty expensive

Most underrated: I use a cheaper one by Etos (a dutch brand) and it does the trick every time. The best thing… It’s only 4 euros 😉

Jyoan Avatar

Overrated: e.l.f (totally squeezes my eyelids, unusable), and Shu Uemura (doesn’t fit my Asian eyes and squeezes eyelids slightly).

Underrated: Canmake (Asian brand), Anna Sui, and Shisedo Maquillage.

Adelita Avatar

Most Overrated:
Shu Uemura & Shiseido, but they ARE great though…

Most Underrated:
Sonia Kashuk Curl Up, e.l.f. Mechanical Eyelash Curler and my favorite, Koji Eyelash Curler No. 73.
It’s cheap, the curve fits my eye and what I like the most is the size, Koji Eyelash Curler No. 73 is wider than most eyelash curler, it gets all my lashes! No more awkward-crimped-look lashes on my outer corner lashes. Yaaayy!!! 😀

moirod Avatar

I don’t have an overrated curler but underrated: MUJI EYELASH CURLER. Comes with an extra refill, and you can purchase 2 refills/pack at the store. Similar to Shiseido in shape, construction doesn’t feel as heavy/solid but it gets the job done for cheap.

Natalie Avatar

I don’t have an overrated, but Japonesque is extremely underrated. It curls all of my Asian stick lashes better than the Shu AND I get free refilled for the life of the curler?? Love!

Laura Avatar

Every full lash curler I’ve tried has been too wide, too curved, or just plain too big for my eyes, including Shu, Japonesque, and Revlon (the worst!)

I guess detail lash curlers are underrated. They’re incredibly useful for those of us with small eyes. Sure, it takes a few extra squeezes, but at least I can get it close to my lid.

Aida Avatar

Overrated – Not sure. I rarely use one and when I do is the Shu Uemura one 🙂
Underrated – I used the ELF one a couple of times and it did a great job, couldn’t see much difference between the results I got using these two.
