Do you wear makeup when you workout?
Do you wear makeup when you workout? Do you feel you need to/should?
No, I don’t–unless sunscreen counts, which I’m pretty sure it doesn’t! I prefer not wearing makeup while working out, because I’m not worried about if or how sweating might be impacting the makeup! I don’t think anyone should or needs to, but I understand why someone might wear makeup while working out.

heck naw. lol
No, I don’t see the point. It would get smeared all over my face and then washed off in the shower.
hmmm. my eyebrows sometimes cuz i have a scar there 🙁
Depends. If I’m working out at home, heck no. But if I’m going for a run, I will apply a light layer of mineral foundation or lately, some BB cream and do my brows. I’m not really comfortable with everyone in my neighborhood seeing all my scars, etc. I do wash it off right afterwards though. When I take a dance class or dance aerobics at school, I do wear a minimal amount- BB cream, powder, brows, mascara, a subtle gloss. I have to take the bus there and back and don’t want to be completely barefaced.
I don’t put on makeup specifically to workout, but if I workout after work and don’t feel like removing my makeup. Eh, then I just leave it on. I don’t see much point in putting on makeup to workout, unless you’re just doing strength training that day otherwise it’ll all sweat off anyway.
Never!!
No, it’s just going to feel unpleasant. I’m pretty thankful that I’m not insecure enough to be afraid to be out in public without make-up! I mean, I love make-up, but I wouldn’t want to end up being dependent on it; nor do I want to be loved by others solely because how I look with make-up on.
No.. I prefer to be sweaty, stinky, shiny mess without cosmetics.. I just exercise before the shower/makeup routine. Occasionally I will already have makeup on because I managed to procrastinate my way well into the day in which case I don’t care because it’s going to get washed off afterwards anyway. I do not have problems with my skin in that respect. With my health issues, exercise is really very necessary, but also very painful.. I kinda have to psych myself up. I also cannot workout too late in the day being an insomniac or I get so revved up I cannot sleep whatsoever! You know, television really is total crap in the middle of the night..I digress..again..
Never! At the very least, I use a makeup removing wipe before working out if I’m already wearing makeup, though I prefer to wash my face.
I do, but it’s because I workout in the evening and my makeup is already on/semi-faded from the day.
I do when I run because its right after work and I just go. If it’s in the pool, which it is most of the time, then no I dont wear makeup. If I waited to take off my makeup before I ran, I may talk myself out of running and since I do both every day, I try to just do it.
You really shouldn’t wear makeup when working out. Your pores open when you exercise, leaving them wide open for makeup to fall in and clog them, which causes acne and breakouts!!!
I honestly dont get why you’d wear makeup unless youre going to the gym for some, uh… other reason. It would get so messed up and then showered off????
I agree with you, I don’t see the point unless I’m specifically testing the endurace of the makeup lol… if I’m working out in the afternoon I’ll take some wipes with me and leave the mascara on though.
I wear make-up when I’m working out because I do it in the middle of my workday and I am not going to bother washing it off before I work out. After working out, I take a shower but don’t wash my face, just pat off the sweat, maybe a bit of touch-up and go about my business.
I go work out right after work, so I still have my make up on.
I do but it’s the minimal stuff I wear “en route” – tinted moisturizer which is my SPF or mineral powder which is also my SPF and I don’t leave the house without SPF on my face. Lip balm and maybe some blush because I’d so pale people might think I was dead. I take it all off afterward but reapply for my walk back to my car (3 blocks in this summer sun is too much sun exposure for me)
NO WAY!! I don’t because I’d look like a melted rabid clown with a really bad hair day. LMAO!
Though, I can understand why some women would. I have a friend, who has a friend works out in a unisex gym and she puts on a full face. WHY? If she spots a guy she looks good. She gets away with it because she doesn’t sweat. I told her to get tattooed make-up but she won’t.
I usually workout after workout so the days makeup is still there but no, I don’t take the time to get dolled up before a workout. I see some ladies sporting fresh black smokey eyes and I’m just like um..
*after work
I wore make up once while working out, but i was’t because I was trying to look cute. I wanted to test the product and its staying power. I was testing out my Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup setting spray. It worked wonderfully. But other than I would never ever wear make-up while working out. What would would be the point.
Nope! And the only reason is because of the sweat around my eyes and nose- I can’t keep makeup on during a long workout. If you workout with some hot guy, perhaps this is the best time to wear some concealer and facial powder.
“Workout”? What is this strange thing of which you speak? 😉
Kafka soo true. When I *used* to work out I didn’t wear makeup because what’s the point in sweating it all off? But I haven’t been to the gym in a while, and I”m okay with that. (Although in part it’s because I was recently diagnosed with asthma and I’m trying to keep it under control and I’m having a harder time right now. </tangent> )
blueraccoon Awww, that sucks. Has anything helped? Things like Advair or whatever? Would things like pilates trigger it as well? I *used* to go to the gym and when I did, I’d wear lipstick (I never go anywhere without lipstick, preferably as crimson as possible LOL!) and maybe some liquid eyeliner but that was about it. But, frankly, the torture, torment and misery of the gym wasn’t worth any small benefits. Sure, it would be nice to be more toned in parts but…. eh. <shrug> I’m a size 2, very petite and with a tendency to get extremely muscular at the smallest thing, so all that would happen is that I would get a bit stocky looking. I’m sure yoga or pilates-type things would be ideal but, really, I’d rather stick a knitting needle in my eyeball.
Kafka I’m on singulair and flovent at the moment, and that’s keeping it mostly under control, and I have two different rescue inhalers for when it doesn’t work. So I”m doing okay but I’m afraid to go back to working out for fear I’ll have an asthma attack in the middle of the gym. I’m thinking maybe yoga, to start? I am nowhere near a size 2 and not petite, but I”ve come to terms with my body. Mostly.
My thoughts *exactly*.
maybe left over make up because i usually go from work straight to the gym!
Generally, no. I’ve been working out first thin in the morning for the past year, so I won’t put on make-up before a morning workout. The one exception is when I have attended organized physical training (PT) in the past and have had a big zit to cover up…then I’d purposely apply some concealer just to cover the zit up. You gotta do what you gotta do when you’re leading your military unit in PT! The only other time is when I exercise after work because it’s already been applied for the day…then I don’t really care if it gets messed up since I go straight home after..
Hmmm….usually yes, because I go right after work most days. If I am going first thing in the morning, just a couple swipes of concealer under the eyes and maybe some waterproof mascara to make me look a bit more awake lol. However, if I am teaching a group ex class, I will put a little more effort into looking pulled together – but always waterproof/longwearing makeup!
Lol no. I take a shower directly after my workout, so for me there’s no point. But I do have friends who feel obligated to wear makeup while they’re at the gym (remember that my friends’ ages range anywhere from 13 to 25). I think it’s shitty if you’re doing something good for yourself but other people make you feel like you need to live up to a certain standard. (???) Are there people at the gym who are that much of assholes? If so, I guess I’m blessed with mine.
Sam Schweinsberg honestly I have seen those girls at the gym the look like they are on a beauty contest or or trying to get males attention. While I am sweating and working hard I see them with the shortest short and the tightest pants and believe me no sweat.
I wear my sunscreen cream on my face but nothing more, it can be I have some blush left from the afternoon before gym. But im not going to gym to get attention there. I go to work out and do it right, Im not afraid to sweat, so without make up is the best,
oh yeah, i like looking my best.
If I were to work out, I’d probably wear a touch of BB cream and lip gloss. But I don’t actually work out. So… Yeah.
not on my face but i do wear a nude lipstick. the only time i wore full on makeup was when i didnt have time to go home and remove it. Washing my face at the gym was not gonna happen.
Lordy no, me working out sweating with makeup = DISASTER. I think that’s one instance where I feel absolutely NO NO need or pressure whatsoever to wear makeup. People can do what they want, but if I see someone wearing makeup at the gym, I just wonder how it’ll look at the end of their workout haha!
Yes! And I know I look ridiculous doing it! But I don’t care! 🙂 At least I’m the best-looking “powerplater” in the group.
no I don’t–I honestly don’t care how horrible I look when I’m working out and I prefer to let my skin breath and be able to sweat the toxins out naturally instead of plugging up my pores. Plus, if I was wearing foundation and blush and all that and started to sweat, i would feel like that would look even uglier than my bare skin sweating! 😛 that’s just me though
Becca @The Beauty Sample definitely that is the case with me! Ive been into sports for whole my life, and our basketball coach taught us to train without makeup or accessories (even watches), so that is a habit of mine from childhood that I only wear gym clothes during workout even if Im at home or gym studio! plus I love the nasty look of mine after a hard workout and I dont want makeup make me look prettier 😛
Never! IMO if your makeup still looks okay halfway through your workout session you’re not working out hard enough.I think it’s funny when I go to the gym and the people wearing makeup are more often than not just barely moving and more busy looking their best and staring at everyone else working out.
If I can’t get up and workout before work/school, then yes, just because I’m headed straight to the gym after class or other activities, so I don’t bother taking it off. If I’m going in the morning, I might just put on some light foundation/concealer on any noticeable acne.
You really shouldn’t wear makeup when working out. Your pores open when you exercise, leaving them wide open for makeup to fall in and clog them, which causes acne and breakouts!!!
The most important thing for me was to work out. If I was at work and decided to go work out I’m not taking the extra step of taking my makeup off. I’ve never had a problem and I’m not sure why people have such a problem with it. My face. As a makeup artist I understand the issues but working out is more important.
I usually go to the gym right after work so I do leave my eye makeup on but I TRY to keep those little makeup remover towelettes and at the very least remove my face makeup. Much easier and less time consuming than removing my eye makeup as well!
It hurts my eyes enough to get plain old sweat in them, I wouldn’t want to worry about my makeup getting in them too! I know when i work out i’m not supposed to look pretty, i would prefer not to get any visual attention while i’m working out, it makes it hard to focus on what i’m doing
I actually used to wear make-up at the gym cuz I’d go straight from work. But when I went on Sunday- no make-up! Lol not even worth it. Besides, I get hit on enough. When I have no make-up on, I look 10 years younger lol. It’s a good way to avoid pervs 🙂
no make up ..
Funny, was just talking about this the other day. I do wear light makeup when working out (tinted moisturizer, waterproof liner/mascara, and tinted lip balm). I noticed I work out harder when I feel more polished- you look good, you feel good. It’s all a personal choice, so whatever makes a person feel better.
I wear a little concealer… I think people shouldn’t bother with a full on makeup… but a little with a natural look is totally fine I think 🙂
I usually go to the gym in the evenings, so I leave my makeup on from the work day. I don’t want to wash my face more than twice a day, and I will definitely be washing it after the workout, so you will see me at the gym with my eye makeup on even though I didn’t apply it for the occasion. Lol. If I get up and hit the gym on a weekend morning, though, I won’t wear makeup for that.
Fullmakeup. Everytime. :-d
The only time I wear makeup to the gym is if I was already wearing it during the day. I’m way too much of a sweaty beast when I workout to bother!
I do. I know it’s not good for my skin, but as it turns out, my exercising happens in the midst of my other daily activities, and I’m not about to go bare-faced every day just because I exert myself. I try to fit it in at the end of the day, so then I can come home and wash my face off- but I do want to add that my cosmetics really hold up well during all the huffing and puffing and perspiring. So well, that I was recently moved to write the corporate office of Maybelline to commend their products on this. xoxo Beth in Pgh 😉
It’s a big no-no for me as my face is the first part of my body that starts sweating when I get hot or work out… *sighs*
I work out after work, so I use a makeup wipe to take off any face makeup and leave eye makeup on as-is. I sweat plenty, but unless it’s 1.5 hours my mascara isn’t going anywhere and it’s a good test of shadow/primer combination. 🙂
No way! Just sunscreen if I’m going to be outside. I’m too acne prone to dare wearing any kind of makeup that is going to mix with my sweat and clog my pores. I don’t understand why anyone would wear makeup while working out because I don’t think it is good for your skin, but it’s a personal choice.
I used to… until I read how sweat + makeup is TERRIBLE for your skin (I know I shouldn’t have needed to read that, it’s kind of obvious, but still). Not a huge temptation for me anyway since I usually opt to work out at home rather than the gym.
I try not to, but over the summer, I’ve been wearing minimal makeup, mostly only liner and maybe some mascara. During the school year, I try to carry face wipes and use them before I have my workouts!
No make up when working out or physical therapy, in my case. Do wear a moisturizer w/ sunscreen tho.
Yes, but only because I go to the gym straight after work!
Sometimes. My gym schedule tends to coincide with my work schedule, so I either have to put on the bare minimum (usually mascara and light eyeshadow) before going or apply it at the gym post-work out before I go to work. Generally, I avoid going with a full face of makeup – I’ll either not put any on or scrub it off before I head there.
I do, but just because I work out almost every day around 5 pm after my boyfriend is off work and than we might be doing something afterwards. I don’t feel like doing my makeup twice a day 😉 I find my estee lauder double wear and mac studio sculpt foundation mix stays put! I just blot the sweat from my face and it looks perfect even after the most intense work-out. I don’t wear a smoky eye with red lip of course. Something pretty neutral.
Thats y i dont work out
Not on purpose. If I happen to be wearing it, yes. But I prefer to be able to wipe my face clean during my workout, and not have makeup smearing all over. I have oily skin and get sweaty easily so I stay fresh the less I have on! 🙂
I don’t wear make up when I work out. If I (rarely) forget to take it off before working out, I tend to get pimples – so it’s not good for my skin either! I think it just doesn’t make sense, even if you’re not a heavy sweater, the make up is going to be ruined anyway after a hard workout.
I usually work out at home, but when I did go to a gym, I would wear a tinted moisturizer, waterproof mascara, and tinted lip balm… nothing that would run in my face or be bad for my skin, but enough makeup to make me not feel even yuckier while I was sweating and panting. 😀
You bet I do. Full-face almost every time. I have to. My natural skin tone is reddish, kind of blotchy, with dark circles under my eyes. Without makeup I look scary. With makeup, I look all right. Being single, my preference is to try to look as good as I can. It also helps my confidence, which is so important when lifting weights. I’m not the girl at the gym we’ve all seen who stands around being pretty and doing nothing — I work really hard, lift heavy, and do cardio, all of which is really beneficial as I approach middle age and am fighting an expanding midsection. So makeup might be bad for my pores, but my pores never were that great to begin with, and it totally boosts my self-esteem, which is a benefit that far outweighs any negative impact.
I HAVE to wear some sort of makeup when I work out (usually tinted moisturizer, mascara and a good cream blush!) I have a meduim-dark complexion but when I work out I get so pale!I’ve had workers at the gym ask me if I was alright, saying I look like I’m going to pass out because I’m so pale!So something to keep my skin looking fine is a must for me
I want to know what makeup Olympic athletes wear when they’re competing! Not only the women, but also the men!
@Justine I don’t really know for sure but I assume it’s stage makeup like the circus ppl and the fantastic acrobatic performers whose name I can’t recall. They are from Europe and Asia. You have to use heavy creams to get that stuff off.

I don’t wear any makeup if I’m working out. I don’t want to be worried about makeup smearing all over my face when I get sweaty. Also I think my skin would hate me even more than it already does if I did that.
Most days, I’m only wearing eyeliner, and I always wear waterproof anyway, so yes, I do wear makeup when I workout. I don’t wear any face products aside from the occasional bronzer, so smearing luckily isn’t an issue for me!
Yes but only because when I do go to the gym it’s usually directly after work and I’m not going to wash my face, work out, and wash it again. However, if it is the morning (or a weekend and I haven’t yet applied my face) I’ll go sans. So basically it depends on if I’m already wearing it or not.
