Most Overrated & Underrated Lipstick Formula

There are always products that receive endless raves, but they don’t always live up to our expectations or work out as well as they do for others.  Share your picks for most overrated and underrated LIPSTICKS.  Don’t forget to share your whats and whys as to your choices!

My Picks

  • Most Overrated: Tom Ford — not that these are used by everyone, but I see a lot of raves for it, and while it’s a good formula, I don’t think it’s the best on the market and the color range is very basic and fairly dupe-able.
  • Most Underrated: Shiseido Perfect Rouge — it’s a really creamy, moisturizing range with a good variety of color, but I rarely see anyone mention them!

Overrated: YSL.  Their color selection and packaging are lovely, but I just don’t get very long wear out of them, and for me frequent reapplications shouldn’t be necessary in that price range.

Underrated: Revlon.  They’re getting more attention now, but they’re the best performance you’re going to get on a drugstore budget, and they have a wide color range.

lyislooney Avatar

@Eibhlin I’m with you on the Revlon assessment. They were the first lipsticks I purchased with the intention of trying out colors regardless of formula before moving onto the higher end products for the quality, but they were so good I didn’t even need to move on!

Dominique33 Avatar

Most overrated : Yves Saint-Laurent lipsticks. Packaging too. The formula is common, packaging is not very classy
Most underrated ( here in France ) : Nars lipsticks. The formula is great ( the 3 semi-matte, sheer and satin ), colours are simply gorgeous. Many prefer YSL, Dior, Chanel or MAC for example.

Bliss Avatar

Most Overrated: Definitely YSL and MAC lipsticks. They’re insanely popular, but I don’t find either formula impressive.

Most Underrated: I really enjoy the Too Faced Lip of Luxury line. The packaging is adorable and I find them to be extremely creamy and buttery. I believe it’s actually one of the better lipstick formulas but reviews and swatches online are few and far between.

Nikki Avatar

Most Overrated: Guerlain Rouge Automatique. I’ve tried these out before and I feel like these are so slippery and feel very weird on the lips… and at that price tag it’s just not for me. I just don’t understand the glowing reviews? They don’t feel lightweight at all and I’ve seen MUCH longer lasting lipsticks for a fraction of the price -_-…………(IMO if you try Rimmel Moisture Renew, they are almost the exact feel of the Guerlain Rouge Automatiques. Dare I say, the even feel a little bit higher quality than Guerlain’s)

Most underrated: Lancome L’Absolu Nu… these feel so lightweight and pillowy <3 Although they are a bit expensive at least you can tell they are a luxury lipstick. They also last quite awhile too with some stain.

Kafka Avatar

@Nikki, I feel the same way and for very similar reasons about a lot of the Guerlain lipsticks nowadays. “Slippery” is dead on, imo, and a perfect description. I also agree that they feel weird and they don’t last. At ALL! I always end up feeling like a weirdo when I read the endless raving, glowing reviews!

Allie Avatar

Most overrated: MAC, I just don’t understand everyones obsession with their lipsticks. I guess they’re fairly affordable but the smell it just terrible and I find almost all of their formulations subpar. Maybe its just me 🙁
Most underrated: Dior Addict Lipstick. Yes, its very expensive. But are they totally wearable and feel like I dipped my lips in my favorite lip balm. Even my mother who hates wearing lipstick loves her Dior Addict Lipstick. The downsides to this product: price and longevity. It doesn’t last for hours on my lips, but honestly I just don’t care.

Elle Avatar

Overrated: Lime Crime – I know a lot of people avoid this company now, but when these products came out people acted like this was the only range that featured pastels/brights in unique colors. The formula just isn’t that great and companies like MAC, OCC, Secret Kisses, Barry M have similar colors with better performance and price point

Underrated: Sephora Rouge Cream – while I wish they had more colors, they give really great bold color without being drying or uncomfortable. I hope Sephora expands the range!

moena Avatar

Most overrated: Revlon. Everyone’s in love with the lip butters, but I feel that the texture and finish are horrible.
Most underrated: I agree, Shiseido’s makeup is underrated in basically every category. More people need to discover its awesomeness.

Jenny Avatar

Revlon Super Lustrous – I’ve tried so many from this range, and have never found anything special about any of them. The color range is enormous yet I’ve never found a single color from their line that is a must have for me.

Revlon Color Burst – I think this is much better lipstick than the Super Lustrous and Lip Butters. They were the hot thing when they first came but that died down quickly and the Lip Butters have over shadowed them. The colors are all really pigmented and wearable with good wear time but not drying.

Makaegan Avatar

Most overrated: NYX. I always heard people obsess over how amazing NYX lipsticks are, so I went out last year and bought 8 during a huge sale at ULTA. And I only have two that I can even tolerate. I’ve never had problems applying any other lipstick, but the formula for NYX is TOO creamy. They slide everywhere, melt, fade terribly fast and unnaturally, and dry out my lips. Ick.

Most underrated: Revlon. Amazing. And even their matte formulas are fabulous (and I generally can’t stand matte lipsticks). And Makeup For Ever, as well. I never hear anybody talk about the RAI lipsticks, but I think they’re wonderful.

hwendy Avatar

overrated:
Tom Ford: it is actually one of the most caky formula on me but I really love the colour selections. maybe they are dupeable but I find them milkier then most of the similar colours which I really like.   I have 5 of them for this reason but it is not worthy to save up for it. there are many other better formulas out there and much cheaper. ex bobbi borwn rich colour. half price and much better formula.
underrated:
Shiseido, sisley, Edward Bess, hourglass…I really love suqqu formula too but it s really hard to get on hold of this brand. it is also not at all long lasting(this is never the issue to me) and the colour is very basic and mature..

Kafka Avatar

Over-rated: MAC. A thousand times over, MAC!!  Then, I would really say Guerlain because, in my experience, the hype (and the beauty of the cases) just doesn’t live up to what I want in a lipstick.

Under-rated: I would agree with Shiseido for the mattes which are really velvet-y, but I’m going to go far, far afield and say Poppy King/Lipstick Queen. I find it somewhat sad that no-one talks about it today, especially given that retro styles are big again due to Mad Men/Adele. Back in the ’90s/early 2000s, her then-labeled “Poppy” brand seemed to be the “in” lipstick and not-so-secret “it” thing in a lot of NY & LA circles. Bendel’s, Barney’s, Bergdorf’s and more would sell out of her lipsticks because they are perhaps the ultimate for ’40s movie star looks or colours. She focuses almost entirely on reds and pinks in really intense, hyper-pigmented shades. Her opaques have something like 90% pigmentation and to this day, when I put on one of her old lipsticks, people always go “WOW! What are you wearing??!” She seems to have expanded into the sheers now as well, as compared to the old days when it was all Ava Gardner/Rita Hayworth matte reds, but that just makes her even more worth checking out for people who prefer a sheerer look. (Saints for sheer, Sinners for opaque/matte- all about $18. Also glosses, shines, & more.) And she’s still available around the country in Barney’s and some other stores. Here’s a link to her website if anyone wants to check out her super cool stuff: http://www.lipstickqueen.com/product_frame.htm

Kafka Avatar

@Alix – Oh my God, I almost fell off my chair. Someone has not only heard of Lipstick Queen but shares my love!!! <faints>  Hurrah!!!!!! Maybe, between you and I, we can spread the word. 🙂 I really don’t know what happened- one minute everyone I knew and all the magazines were talking about her, the next minute dead silence. And yet, those who have tried her stuff, love it. Great scores at Makeupalley where she’s often mentioned as the HG (for reds in particular) but no-one ever seems to talk about her outside of there and a few blogs. Such a huge, huge shame! Do you go for her mattes or her shiny/satin-y stuff?

Veronica Avatar

@Kafka I think the biggest problem with Lipstick Queen is availability – I had never heard of her line until I started researching cosmetics online, and unless you’re living in a major U.S. city with high end retailers, you won’t be able to see it in person, either.  She’s on my to-try list because I have read so many good reviews for the formula, but I can see why people would be intimidated by the thought of shelling out $18 (plus shipping fees) for something they can’t swatch first.

Kafka Avatar

@Veronica, give me a minute to get over the shock of someone else having actually heard about Lipstick Queen! 😉 LOL. No, you’re absolutely right about the availability issue, though I was surprised when I went to her website for locations to see how many stores (even apart from her old mainstay of Barney’s) did carry her. Much more than I had thought and from Maine to Oregon, from smaller salons & cool apothecaries to more Indie shops. And I was surprised to see she was sold all over the EU/Europe as well as Australia, etc.  I’m like you and many others in not liking to get something I can’t swatch first in person but I think if more magazines or blogs covered her (like in the old days when there was such a huge fuss over her lipsticks) I think more people would at least have *heard* of her, and then, perhaps, considered giving her a shot. Most people just have a completely blank look when I mention Lipstick Queen! If you ever do end up trying one of her lines (her matte reds are head-turning!), I hope you’ll let me know here on Temptalia. 🙂

Veronica Avatar

I actually found out about Lipstick Queen when I was researching lipsticks that were good for dry, sensitive lips.  After seeing all the good reviews, I agree that I’m surprised it doesn’t have more popularity.  I did notice an article that it mentioned she sort of disappeared from the limelight for awhile business-wise, and that could be part of the problem.  Capitalism is a cruel mistress.

I fully admit part of the availability issue is the city I live in.  It isn’t exactly a happening place, and we just lost one of only two high end designer level stores we had (Saks 5th Avenue), so getting access to certain brands in person is just impossible.  (There are only two Sephora stores within reasonable driving distance of me, and they’re supply is pretty limited compared to a lot of regions.  We don’t even have an Illumasqua or Guerlain counter at ours!)  She’s definitely within my top three to try next, though, so I’ll have to remember to bring it up when I try it.  (I’m hoping Medieval is the sheer shade I’ve been searching forever for!)

Kafka Avatar

@Veronica, that’s really interesting about her temporary disappearance from the limelight. Thank you for sharing that, as well as how you heard about her in the first place. 🙂  I share your frustration with supply limitations for certain brands. I live in the 4th largest US city (Houston) and not a single Sephora anywhere carries Illamasqua. Not one! (Like you, I prefer not to buy sight unseen, though I have for Illamasqua’s lipsticks and nail varnishes, thanks to Christine’s swatches. The lipstick was….. not a joy. Plus, it broke after my 3rd use, which is apparently not uncommon to their line.)  Anyway, is there perhaps an Anthropologie store not too, too far away from you? They carry LQ.

I think it’s wise you’re opting for LQ’s sheers because her mattes are said by some to be a bit drying or to require a balm underneath. I haven’t experienced that at all (and I usually only wear matte lipsticks), but for someone with dry, sensitive lips, I think you’d be much happier with one of her less opaque lines. I’ve heard some great things about the sheers and my sister, who has very dry lips, loves the Saint line.  BTW, I just Googled “Medieval” and…. how COOL is that medieval playing card with the woman upside down?!! And the story about the old days when women used lemons to get that colour… I love it. The blood red colour looks fabulous for a sheer! I hope you eventually get the chance to try it one of these days and that it works for you. Promise you’ll let me know if you do.  🙂

ClaireBarker Avatar

@Kafka Yes, I love Lipstick Queen! My lippie drawer is all LQ, apart from one old Urban decay gloss that I got for a present years ago, and a YSL Glossy stain that I bought yesterday (which is fabby btw.)  Can’t speak for the US, but in the UK they are only in SpaceNK and I have always, always had fantastic service from them. As it should be when you spend that much money.

Kafka Avatar

@ClaireBarker Hurrah! Between a few of us here, hopefully we will pique a few people’s interest in Lipstick Queen. 🙂  She and the line deserve it. Claire, how much does one of her lipsticks go for in the UK? Is the brand moderately well-known over there?

ClaireBarker Avatar

@Kafka Hmmm…I think it’s really very niche. SpaceNK isn’t even a department store, just sells cosmetics, skin care bath stuff and some candles. It has few outlets as well and is verrry luxurious, so it’s only in rich cities (London, Tunbridge Wells, Leeds, etc.)

Price wise-Jean Queen is £15, Medieval is £20, the Liptropolis set is £40…so it is up there with YSL, Lancome, Chanel etc. I personally adore the fact there is no taste or smell, the scent in my one and only MAC l/s icked me out.

Kafka Avatar

@ClaireBarker  Really interesting. And that’s pricey indeed! With the current currency rates, one of her lipsticks (let’s say the matte/opaque Sinner ones at $18) goes for £11 here. £20 is $32.  (Thank you, Google currency converter. lol)  Huge difference! But I’m with you on preferring her to many other brands, especially MAC which I’m not keen on.

armacinnis Avatar

Most Overrated: YSL. They don’t last as long as they should for the price point

Most Underrated: Estée Lauder’s Hydra Lustre Lipstick. They are so creamy, moisturizing and last a long time for a lipstick that doesn’t have a “long wear” claim.

stacey Avatar

Over-rated- I agree Tom Ford, it is ok, not great for that price; Nars, Chanel,

Under-rated-  Dior- Rouge Dior Lipcolor Lipstick, not the Addict varieties, Dolce N Gabanna- nice and creamy and a little goes a long way.

I keep my makeup forever…even when I should toss it.  Nars, Chanel all have gone rancid on me even when I only used it a couple times whereas Dior, this free gift has been with me years….just wish they sold this color.

Lila Avatar

Over: MAC lipsticks. I see so many girls flip out over the LE shades, and some of the DC’d colors go for 5 times the amount on eBay. I like how MAC has such a great color selection, but to me they’re just as basic as some of the nicer DS offerings. Don’t get me wrong, MAC is nice but I don’t understand the obsession.

Under: Hourglass Femme Rouge. They’re an indie brand, so of course they’re not going to be talked about a ton. But I really think they’re absolutely WONDERFUL! Hydrating, creamy, sheeny, and super pigmented. I pray they add new colors soon, because I’m close to owning almost all of the existing 12, haha.

Lulle Avatar

Overrated: Guerlain Rouge Automatique, Chanel Coco Shine. I don’t understand why they’re so popular, I find both really mediocre and overpriced.
Underrated: Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color, great, opaque, long wearing creamy formula and gorgeous shades. Revlon Colorbust Lip Butter: their name is misleading, but they have an intense color payoff and are very moistsurizing.

Carly M Avatar

Overrated: Revlon ColorBurst. I’ve never had much luck with these. They’ve either had patchy or sheer pigmentation, dried out my lips, or settled like crazy into fine lines. Plus, I’ve never found one that is long wearing.
Underrated: I’m a pretty big fan of the Wet n Wild MegaLast lip colors. I haven’t heard a lot about them on other blogs, but I enjoy them quite a bit. They’re very opaque and I think that they’re the best matte formula at the drugstore level.

SarahAnne Avatar

Most Overrated: MAC! I have had such bad luck with their lipstick formulas… I think the scent is cloying, the formulas are mostly drying, and they emphasize my lip lines.

Most Underrated: NARS. The formula is very comfortable and wears well, and the colors seem to be very carefully curated.

Stephanietps Avatar

Overrated : ysl or Dior, I have yet to find one I actually like !
Underrated: guerlain kisskiss, lise watier rouge plumpissimos

KristinaC Avatar

Overrated: MAC. Good colour range but incredibly drying and some of the best shades are always LE.

Underrated: Ellis Faas. Innovative formulas and universally flattering shades.

Aevita Avatar

overrated Armani – too drying
underrated Essence! 52 in the nude and 50 creamy nude are the best nudes I’ve tried so far! formulation is really nice as well, price roughly 2-3 $! the best value for money on the lip pie market:) however the packaging is horrible:(

Laudes Avatar

MOST OVERRATED…sort of:  Now, I love MAC’s color cosmetics in general; I have TONS of their lipsticks, including many of my all-time favorites. But there can be problems….

MAC  often comes up with the most gorgeous, unusual colors – and I love them! Once in a while, though,  a MAC lipstick’s color is truly spectacular, but its texture is a letdown:  despite its stated texture “type” (i.e., “Matte,” “Lustre,” etc.) the MAC lipstick you get  may turn out to be anything – uneven, smeary, goes on too dry or too wet,  applies so softly that it’s unfixably messy,  or it just doesn’t show up much!

As I said, I usually love MAC’s color cosmetics to death! I just wish they would be a little bit more consistent when it comes to the texture of its lipstick! As far as listing some underrated lipsticks, I haven’t tried any (other than a few odd MACs, see above) in a long time, luckily.

Greenbergl Avatar

Most overrated: Not too sure…Nars maybe, but it could have been just a fluke. I bought a Nars and really disliked everything about it.

Most underrated: Shiseido, definitely!

DLL Avatar

Overrated: NARS.  They’re good but they don’t deserve the hype.

Underrated: By Terry.  Lightweight, moisturizing, intensely pigmented.  Such luxurious lipsticks!

Kastehelmi Avatar

Most Overrated: Wasn’t impressed with Nars lipsticks when I tried a few, but I may find differently if I fall enough for a color to buy one. Not a fan of L’Oreal, Guerlain or NYX for the terrible smell! L’Oreal is THE WORST, though the feel and colors are great and I wish I could wear them. Guerlain is not for everyone–love many Guerlain perfumes, but not violet-smelling lipsticks. NYX smells terribly synthetic and the formula has too much slip to wear comfortably.

Most Underrated: Agree about Shiseido Perfect Rouge! Perfect indeed! Smooth, very refined colors, completely unscented and tasteless makes the lips look downright luscious and healthy.
I also LOVE Bite Beauty–not only unscented and unflavored, but somehow there is a taste, and that taste is rather edible and healthy, hard to describe, but lickable–it’s like I can taste the resveratrol they claim to put in there, and it tastes nice. I’ll just say my tube of Zivoli is a glamorous, bold, yet tasteful red that I would be confident wearing when anticipating a makeout session, cause it tastes so pleasant and non-makeup-ey! And the formula is smooth, has decent wear time, etc….

Quinctia Avatar

I must not be terribly picky about lipstick, I can’t think of any that I’ve tried that I would say were overrated…though I’ve never tried Mac’s.

Underrated:  Jordana Easyshines, especially given the hype around the Revlon lip butters.  These feel so much nicer (though the lip butters are okay), and they smell like what they’re named after…could be a pro or con, though I figure if you hate a certain scent, that means you only have one shade to avoid instead of a whole line.

Also, Milani’s HD Advanced lip color is one I don’t see recommended a lot.  It’s slim, which I often find easier to apply, and has some great pigmentation, isn’t overly slippery, heavy, or drying.  And it’s got Sweet Grape, which is a very unique color and wearable purple shade.  Only possible downside is they all smell like watermelon.

Angie Avatar

So right about the Jordana Easyshines! I had 3 of these before my lip butters, and when I got the lip butters I was surprised about how similar these two products are.

Quinctia Avatar

And they’re TWO FREAKING DOLLARS.  I wish they retracted all the way into the tube, but if I lose a bit of product when it’s two dollars, I can deal with it!

Safyre Avatar

Most Overrated: MAC… This isn’t to say that I don’t like MAC, but no texture other than the Frosts ever goes on even and/or opaque on me without having to do work – I’ll have to apply it over a balm, or build it up, or put gloss over it to get it the way I want it which ends up almost defeating the lipstick. I do like that they have a large selection of different colors and finishes though.

Most Underrated: Lancome Color Design, I never hear anyone talking about them but I really enjoy them. They go on nice by themselves and look nice by themselves, they also feel comfortable on.

StephD Avatar

Most Overrated: MAC, Revlon – MAC makes good lipsticks, but not great. Revlon lipsticks have always disappointed me.

Most Underrated: Korres Mango Lipsticks, Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani, and Benefit lipsticks (both the Full and Silky finish ones) – These are truly amazing products, very moisturizing, the Armani one is the most long-wear lipstick ever, and they do make gorgeous colors !!!!

tuna lala Avatar

Overrated: MAC. I have so many of them and have yet to be wowed. Will continue to buy for their color range.

Underrated: Burberry Beauty. If you like classic makeup, this brand is a good point to start with. Lots of emphasis on nudes, versatility and pretty, classic shades. The formula is amazing, I have Field Rose and Devon Sunset and will continue to buy more. Also, I think Estee Lauder Pure Color is underrated. Got one of these from a GWP event and it is amazing!

yajuwen Avatar

Most overrated: most MAC lipsticks. They stay on for sure with great color, but it’s not very comfortable to wear. I always want a lip balm very badly after an hour of wear… Lipsticks by Chanel and Dior are incredibly overrated (and over-priced) for me. They have the same problem with MAC.

Most underrated: clinique lipsticks. They are very comfortable to wear, smooth and moisturizing. They don’t come with bald colors but I don’t wear bald color anyway.

kristine Avatar

Most Overrated: Probably MAC or NARS. They’re both okay, something like 6/10 but neither formulas are as good as everyone claims them to be. Also, the multiple reader’s choice awards that both lipsticks get are most likely only because MAC and NARS are more affordable luxury brands. I think both formulas are super drying and not long-lasting enough. They color range for both is great but I don’t think they are worth it.

Most Underrated: Tom Ford. I know a lot of people actually love these and talk about these all the time but I still don’t think they get enough recognition. These are AMAZING!! They are creamy, pigmented, long-lasting, and not drying. The colors are somewhat more dupable (more classic though) but I still don’t think any other brand compares. Definitely worth it.

pinkrickjamespony20 Avatar

Most under-rated Rimmel Moisture Renew freaking awesome!
Most over-rated Cle de Peau, it’s cool I love lipstick in general, but these didn’t moisturize no $50 worth.

GlamorPuss Avatar

Most overrated:  I hate to join the bandwagon but MAC.  I have many and some are great but some are just dreadful.  Too many limited editions, the formulas can be drying and I never seem to understand why they have so many different “finishes” that look the same and don’t apply evenly.

Most underrated:  All of Revlon’s formulas, even Moon Drops! I have so many of their lipsticks that are not drying and have great wear time.  Also, tons of available colors.  I also don’t hear enough about Korres or my old standby, Clinique.  Korres has great colors, a moisturizing formula and is surprisingly long-wearing for a natural brand.  Clinique may be a bit more staid, but you can count on them to be consistent with good, wearable colors and the formulas are never drying.

Salvinia Avatar

Most overrated for me would be NYX round lipstick. They smell horrible, first of all, plus they’re just too slippery so they smudge and feather like mad. AND they’re not even long lasting. I know they only cost like $2 but it’s still a waste of money if you never wear them!

Most underrated is definitely Smashbox Be Legendary. They like, just came out and I hardly ever hear about them! They have gorgeous colours, wear comfortably and stay on for ages, even the cream finishes which I’ve never found with any other brand. Also they smell good, kind of sweet but not strong at all.

Overrated: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte; especially #7 Lingerie Pink- This lipstick makes me look like a dead fish… Not a good look. ><Underrated: Too Faced Lip Of Luxury Champagne Essence Lipstick; especially Marcia, Marcia, Marcia- I LOVE this lipstick~!! It’s such a lovely color. ♥

Greenbergl Avatar

I totally agree with you on the L’oreal…the scent is absolutely gag worthy. I’ve never tried Guerlain though, but probably won’t if they are highly scented. I Hate scented products on my lips.

Veronica Avatar

Overrated:  MAC is sort of hit or miss for me.  I love their color range and own quite  a few from them, but I think the brand over all has become too self-assured of its own hype to deserve it.

Underrated:  A lot of the brands mentioned on here (Shiseido, etc.) I agree with, but I’m always surprised I don’t see the Smashbox Be Legendary mentioned on blogs more.  Such a creamy, lovely formula.

Caitlin Mary Avatar

Most Overrated: MAC. I find that their darker colours bleed on me and I am only 20.  I don’t have cracked lips or lots of grooves so how they bleed is frustrating.  And even when I wear a liner to combat the bleeding the staying power is weak and the colours transfer easily.

Most Underrated: Joe Fresh Lipstick.  At only 6 dollars a tube this stuff is magic.  There are a few different types of formulas like a cream, matte and a sheerer formula.  All these apply smooth and last for 4-6 hours depending on colour and finish. The cream lipsick without a liner lasts about 4 hours and with a liner lasts 8 hours and this is through eating and drinking.  The matte lasts about 4-6 and I don’t bother with a liner for it.
I also really like Guerlain Rouge Automatique <3

Kate MacDonald Avatar

Most Overrated: YSL Rouge Volupté. I’ve seen so many raves about these that it’s almost like it’s the only lipstick they make. On me they fade quickly, bleed terribly (not a problem I have with most lipsticks) and dry my lips out something wicked. They also smell really strongly of melon, which I find disgusting. I much prefer their Rouge Pur Couture formula.

Most Underrated: I don’t know that it’s a matter of being underrated or just under-known, but I’m really impressed with the Bite Beauty lip products I’ve tried. Their formula is creamy and long-lasting, very pigmented and super-soft on and my lips always feel better after wearing them. They’re still a young, growing company too, so I’m curious to see what happens as they expand and add more dimension to their line-up.

Most Overrated:  Chanel or YSL – I just don’t get it.  The formulas do not work or have any longevity on me whatsoever. MAC I end up buying for colour and not for quality which is pretty much how my relationship with MAC goes. Most Underrated:  Tom Ford – Nobody seems to like it and it is rudely expensive, but I love it and it works well for me. Guerlain Rouge G is fabulous, but I don’t believe it is underrated.

Most overrated: Fyrinnae.  Love the colors, but all the lippies I have bleed like the dickens in a matter of minutes.

Underrated: L’Oreal Infallible Liquid Lip Color (the double tube one).  I won one of these from Temptalia a while back and it has amazing staying power without being drying.  I love it for theater shows when I need a bold red lip, but don’t want to risk messing it up on stage.  I apply it and DONE!  No hassle all night.

Overrated: MAC; the few that I have tried just feel like a film sitting on my lips, and the color just seems to evaporate. It doesn’t bleed or smudge, but it seems to just disappear. Also, the color range is not impressive; every time I’ve gone to a MAC counter, all there seems to be is a sea of orange, hot pink, or fuschia (and every variation of those shades), so I pretty much just stay away from MAC lipstick.

Underrated: I really like Prestige lipsticks. The color stays on, and they have a limited amount of colors, but the spectrum is wide.

Overrated:  MAC.  I had one one the matte lipsticks and the texture was terrible.

Underrated:  Maybelline Color Sensation.  It wears very well and the texture is nice.  The pigmentation is very good.  The smell is a little strange, but it fades very quickly.  I also love L’oreal Infallible Le Rouge (the one that looks like regular lipstick).  It lasts really long without being very drying.

Most Overrated: MAC  cremesheen applies unevenly, satin formula dries the heck out of my lips, matte formula makes my lips look 80 years old lol I can go on and on. I have to admit they have gorgeous colors.

Most Underrated: Wet n Wild Omg cheap and perfect. wet n wild has come a long ways.

Most Overated:  MAC  All the colors that appeal to me apply as if the lipstick has been out in the shade on a hot summer day — just to gooey & thick & applies unevenly.   As someone said … “filmy” & it has no longevity.

Overrated: MAC matte: they just feel like slippery wax on my lips. I love the colors and opacity, but the ones I have don’t really stay even. Example: Please Me.

Underrated: MAC retro matte. These suckers last. As long as you’re drinking water and have smooth lips to start, you’ll keep a beautiful color and finish with minimal maintenance. Example: Ruby Woo.

I disagree with a lot of you. MAC has the best lipsticks for a department store, with a selling point of 14.50 in the us I can’t complain about them. They are true to color even for the most darkest lips. They are just as good as a $30 lipstick but half the price.

Mmm, I don´t know if Esteé Lauder’s lipsticks are raved about in many blogs or beauty communities, but for me, they are not worth the price. I find it strange that while Clinique belongs to Esteé Lauder,  Clinique´s lipsticks are absolutely great  and definitely underrated. The color range may be classic, but it includes flattering, lovely shades that are not boring at all. They are not drying, they don’t bleed, the color does not change after applied and they are taste free,  Their Color Surge Butter Shine Lipsticks are my favorite ones.

Most Overrated: YSL or Chanel. I mean whats the big deal?!
What would we do without MAC’s lipsticks?!?! Cant live without.
Most Underrated: Milani or Revlon. Both have terrific quality and are so long lasting. Also Kat Von D’s are incredible and so LONG lasting!

Most overrated: Dior
Most underrated: Avon Beyond Color Plumping Lipcolor!!!! I can’t believe I’m the first one to claim that one. They don’t have the greatest selection of colors but man, the formula is amazing!!! And, No, I’m not the Avon Lady….lol!

Most overrated:  YSL and Make Up For Ever
Most underrated: Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colors, Korres Mango Lipsticks, and Aveda lipsticks.  I’m really into lipsticks that have natural ingredients and tend to moisturize the lips rather than dry them out.

Most overrated – Any lipstick that has a matte formula!  Most lipsticks are already somewhat drying that I can’t even imagine wearing a matte lipstick without feeling like I have completely wronged my lips by withholding moisture!

Most underrated – Revlon Colorburst lipsticks.  They give nice color payoff and a bit of moisture, even though they don’t last long because of the moisture/sheen factor.  However, I think these have been discontinued and replaced with the Revlon Lip Butters.
