Revlon Neptune Star Diamond Lust Eyeshadow ($4.99 for 0.028 oz.) is a muted dark navy blue with multi-colored shimmer (preodminantly blue, green, and violet). The color payoff is sheer and looks almost muddied when it is applied dry, and when it’s applied wet, the navy blue starts to bubble forth. Dry, it has a similar color as Dior Smoking Blue, though it doesn’t have the same shimmer/glitter. Make Up For Ever #147 is closest in terms of overall color but lacks the glitter component.
This eyeshadow takes a LOT of work to get to work well (or decently, I suppose). It suffers from poor color payoff, poor blendability, and fall out (both during application and later on while it is worn). When I saw this, it looked so beautiful and shimmering in its compact, so I had to buy it. I thought it was going to be a finer shimmer application, but it’s fairly large, chunky glitter–the texture actually feels gritty to the touch. This is a product that I’d say is best used patted lightly on top of some other, better performing eyeshadow. It just doesn’t deliver enough pigmentation to be used easily on its own.
The fall out is pretty bad, but I had the most frustration dealing with how difficult this shade was to blend. It is dry and stiff to work with, and when you finally manage to blend it out, there’s a really muddied look to it. It does not play well with others for that reason. Fall out during application is one problem, and there’s fall out because you’re heavier handed and then there’s fall out because the product is too powdery or doesn’t bind together well, but fall out that continues throughout the time you wear it is the kind I focus most on and am most concerned about. You will absolutely need to bring out your arsenal of tricks to use with the glitter-bomb–a sticky, adhesive base (like MAC Mixing Medium, Too Faced Glitter Glue, etc.) is a must.
Revlon may describe this has having “rich, refined pigments” and a “velvety smooth texture” that “glides on smoothly, blends effortlessly,” but I didn’t find that any of those things were true. What is true is that yes, this will provide a really gorgeous dimension to the lid with the high sparkle content, but it will take some patience and additional products to get it to behave (which solves the fall out issue the most, but not so much the pigmentation or the blendability). It ends up being a novelty purchase for me; something to work with for a very specific type of look when you have enough time to prep and clean up after it. If you like a glittery effect and don’t mind the work to create the look, you may find this is worth checking out. I recommend it as a layering shade over a coordinating eyeshadow.

I’ve had the same experience with the other shades in this range like Plum Galaxy that look great in the pan but need a lot of work to adhere to the lid!
Gorg Shade!, but it seems like the shadow would have to be used with a good ol primer :\

It’s kind of funny because I remember when I got into makeup less than a year ago, I loved the glitterbombs Revlon makes. I thought they were so great, but when I try to wear them these days, the fallout is horrifying! I bought the silver one from the new Diamond Lust line, but I haven’t done much of anything with it. I’m kind of scared to now, lol.

I just love how they say “Limited Edition” on the package, even though they’ve been out for at *least* two years. I actually kind of like the ones that I have, though I have to admit I haven’t really played around with them all that much. I only bought them because I had some CVS ExtraBucks that I didn’t know what else to do with, and I thought they might be fun. I just wish I knew then how awesome Wet N Wild has become.
I would probably use this with something like too faced glitter glue as a primer
I have this in the black/gunmetal shade and it is absolutely terrible! I have to work SO HARD to get it to stick to my lid and then after that it fades quickly and gets fallout all over the place. I only use it for a bit of crease definition but it’s hardly worth it. I’m really sad about it because it looks GORGEOUS in the pan but its just a terrible product!
Christine, I don’t think this is limited edition? My CVS has them in the regular Revlon section.
Thanks again for the wonderful review. Everytime I see them I am tempted, but will pass. I think I will stick to Thebalm’s overshadow for sparkly goodness.

Oh no! Eeek. I’ve been thinking about trying these but seeing how horrifiyingly badly textured they are idk. I might still want to try it with a sticky base.

Looks so gorgeous in the pan; what a shame that the quality just isn’t there.
What a shame! The purple one, Plum Galaxy, is pretty decent. So was the teal, though I don’t have it close at hand to check the name. I have noticed that most drugstore eyeshadows in blue tend to stink, though I can’t really figure out why.
Okay, weird, I just dug out the other color and it IS Neptune Star. I bought mine like a year ago, though, so now I’m wondering if there’s some inconsitency with the batches.
Really, really unfortunate if that’s the case.

I have all five of these shadows and I have to say I really like the black and white ones and the rest are pretty much not worth using. I have yet to find a way even with a sticky base to avoid the fallout but over other shadows they are gorgeous, the glitter is like no other I’ve found. The white is gorgeous in the inner corner of the eye.
This was my nightmare when I was younger and only shopped at drugstores. One bad purchase and you would be out $8, which is a lot to a teenager. Thanks to your blog and to Sephora’s great return policy (which I have only used twice, ever) I am more into makeup because I can buy without feeling like a duped consumer.
How odd- I brought this with me to Maui this week and was nothing but pleasantly surprised. I’ve had better luck with the Diamond Lust’s then shadows at 4x the price point. Neptune even stayed lovely through hours of snorkeling!
Revlon eyeshadows sort of baffle me in comparison to their other products. The rest of the collection tend to range from pretty good to great (I have a startlingly large collection of lip products from them), but their eyeshadows are always hit or miss for me, with more misses than anything else. It’s kind of a shame because this would be a gorgeous addition to a collection if it worked better.
I have the exact same e/s and it is so difficult to work with its sad! I kept thinking omg yeah! Omg yeah I know! When reading your review lol I had high hopes because it looks so pretty! I hate it when products like that let you down.
Because these are so glittery, I think they need LA Splash sealer/base as the lid primer. I have always hated Revlon shadows. It’s their major weakness in the brand… :/ Kind of sad. You can’t go wrong with their lip products though.
