Hmm, it’s a toughie, it’s such a fine line between being done well and looking OTT.
I think smokey eyes and red lips look great together but I’m too scared to try any other colour combos.
Generally if I’m wearing bright/red/dark lips I just apply ricepaper or grey shadow on my eyes and mascara because i don’t want to swamp the colour.

I think it’s really tricky. I loved the looks Francois Nars did on Erin O’Connor and Caroline Ribeiro in his book “Makeup Your Mind” and I think these are great examples on how you can do both bold lips and eyes and still look sophisticated. Personally I couldn’t pull off both at the same time, except maybe on a very special and appropriate occasion. In my opinion pulling off this look is about the colours. They have to match and shouldn’t be too bright.

I agree with the smokey eyes (or cat eyes) and red lips–that is a classic look that will never go out. It just might look too overdone for just heading to the mall, though!

I think some bright turquoises/greens/blues on eyes and bright pinks/corals on lips would be okay for an evening party in the summer, on the beach. It definitely depends on the skill of the person doing the makeup though!

I think you can. My make-up book(Iman’s) says you can. Smokey eyes and red/dark lips is definitely doable. I also think if you stay in the same color family it could work.

I think neon colors can look cool with bright pink lipsticks if you do it right, but it’s hard to get it right.

I wear black eyeshadow and red lipstick all the time, so as has been said, that works.

OF COURSE!!! This “homegirls” style is very well known in East L.A., and has been copied by the likes of J-LO and Gwen Stefani. And it’s influence has been seen on the runways too. It can be intense but done with just the right red lip for your complection (meaning shades from fire-engine to black cherry)…hell yeah! IT’S FUN!! And that’s the point of make-up, yes?!

I think so. But I know my husband would totally say yes. Whenever I wear dark lips, he says, “i think you should make the eyes darker, so it matches” 🙂

Yep, I definitely think so. Especially when you have really intense, heavy eye makeup, you do kinda need something on your lips to balance it all out.
