Should lip products be scented?

Should lip products be scented? Should they just have enough scent that it cancels out the actual base product scent (like waxiness)? Or do you prefer a more fragrant aroma? What’s your favorite type of scent?

I like vanilla-scented lip products a lot, and I don’t mind mint-scented ones. Ones that smell more like your more traditional fragrance (which more high-end brands, e.g. Chanel, Guerlain, etc., tend to have) are less appealing. I don’t have a problem personally (doesn’t bother my nose or anything), but I can see those types of scents being too strong. I like some kind of scent because it can be a good indicator of how long it’s been open for.

It depends on the product.. I think they scent the product to make that brand more distinctive like Dolce and Gabbanna….or MAC….but what is worse is when the lipstick starts to have this bad texture feel and taste bad…even if it doesnt get used like Nars lipstick….

I don’t like any sort of smell to linger on my lips. I’m very sensitive (headache-wise) to scent, so I’d rather not take the risk. There have been scented lip products I’ve liked (MAC’s gourmand vanilla and a Sleek lipgloss that smells like artificially strawberry-flavored candy), but they tend to be outnumbered by stuff like Covergirl’s lipsticks, which smell horribly floral to me.

Alyssa Avatar

I’m with Christine on this one. If it smells like something simple (especially something yummy) then I’m A-okay but count me out if it smells anything like perfume though. We should note that the lower chance of irritation is a huge advantage to scent free cosmetics.

Can only stick with Mac or my favorite lip breand YSL (awesome smell)…

I tried a lot of lip product but most turn me off (lancome, revlon colorburst-omg those smell horrible like crap…or maybe it’s just mine that was bad but it smells like poop the 1st time a openend it).

I don’t mind scents like in Guerlain or Chanel, the ones I can’t handle are mint or vanilla scented ones, which of course are two scents I don’t like. As far as NARS goes, they just smell bad from the time you open them up, don’t really understand that smell at all.

Carrie Avatar

I’m okay with some vanilla (I like MAC) or mint, but otherwise I’d prefer it not, I’m just too scent sensitive and I find it to be distracting to the point that I won’t wear the product.

Victoria Avatar

I don’t like scented products in general though faint scents that quickly fade away are okay. I hate lipsticks that stink to high heaven (Rimmel ones are DISGUSTING). I don’t really understand the point of fragrance in makeup to be honest….

I’m with you! Vanilla is just my thing, and I’m more than fine with mint. I know that people complain about UD glosses, but I think it smells delicious! I was a bit put off by my first Chanel lipstick (Rouge Coco Mademoiselle), but I got used to it (still not my favorite)!

You’re right about scent being a good indication. If it smells off, you should probably stop putting it on your lips!

I personally love scented lip products in theory, however I have tried some truly terrible in the past. I prefer scents like apple, pineapple, blue raspberry, and coconut over the traditional vanilla, cherry, and cinnamon.

I really wish that there was a wider variety of well made scented products available.

I enjoy vanilla scented l/s like MAC. I find that l/s that is heavily scented is often done so to mask cheaper brands that have a waxy scent.

CatherineM Avatar

Generally I don’t mind whether they are scented or not (my favorite lipgloss smells like cotton candy), as long as it is not too intense. I had to throw out a lipgloss once, because the scent was so strong it caused me headaches.

I much prefer the scent of MAC lipsticks (bought my first tube from Iris Apfel, now I’m converted!), but I have a Lancome one I got from a GWP like 5 years ago and it STILL has that rose smell.

Maybe it hasn’t gone bad yet? It still seems to work/wear ok, so I’m glad that scent is there because I know once it goes I should toss it.

wenjing Avatar

I don’t mind, most of time I love the scents, various type of scents. Nomatter it is foody gourmand vanilla fragrance in MACs, or rosy smell in the Chanels, or powdery old fashioned lipstick scents from higher end brands, I love them all. Even I like bien the scent in NYX lipsticks.

I am highly allergic to many things, vanilla in MAC is ok but I can’t touch Chanel at all. In my opinion they should offer products either with or without fragrance, I think many more people would opt to buy their products. Also, it’s not easy to find out if the product is scented. Many times the only way of knowing is reading the box in person or reading Temptalia. Thank you!

Alix Avatar

I wish they weren’t. Why would I want to smell my lips all day? And, unfortunately, I’m allergic to most scented lip products, which means that entire brands — MAC, Laura Mercier, OCC, even Burt’s Bees (peppermint, yikes) — are off-limits to me. I suppose that saves me some $$$, though!

cp3honingcomplex Avatar

I generally don’t like scented lip products because I’m very sensitive to fragrance and often allergic to it. I really hate some of the NYX glosses with that artificial and nauseating cherry scent. (Sad because they have some really pretty shades.) I also don’t like glosses that smell too much like the industrial products that went into them. I most like the ones that have a mild or minty scent that fades quickly, or ones that just don’t smell like anything at all, like the Revlon Super Lustrous glosses.

Nana Avatar

I personally like scented lip products… but I think if brands want to avoid more returns, then they should not make it scented. I know a lot of people who have returned products because they couldn’t stand the smell. So for my sake, yes. For the brands sake, no 😛

Xero Avatar

I don’t mind scents, really, unless it smells expired. I don’t even mind the Revlon Moondrops, which are heavily perfumed. I get more worried about other people smelling it than about myself.

I like it when lipsticks smell nice though. I have a Hard Candy lip balm that smells and tasted like vanilla frosting, and I like that. I also like the way Rimmel Lasting Finish lipsticks smell, but the Moisture Renew ones smell funky.

Either way, a lipstick’s scent is generally not going to stop me from wearing it.

shusheshe Avatar

I cannot stand scented lip products. There’s a reason I don’t buy Mac lipsticks, glosses, lipcremes, etc… despite their large variety of shades and finishes. All of them come with that really strong and awful fake vanilla smell. Same thing with Laura Mercier lipglosses. I love their colours and non-stickiness, but they also have that strong scent.

Ghoulina Avatar

I don’t mind softer scents like vanilla or mint, but anything else just completely puts me off. I’m very sensitive to fragrance and can’t buy Lancome, L’Oreal, Guerlain, Estee Lauder, YSL or NARS because the scents of their lipsticks make me nauseated. I hate it because all of those brands have colours that I’ve drooled over at some point in time.

Ghoulina Avatar

I forgot to mention Rimmel, Revlon MoonDrops, Chanel, NYX, Dolce & Gabanna…the list goes on forever! It makes me sad that I am limited in lipstick choices because so many of the lovely brands I like scent their lipsticks 🙁

Ryan Avatar

For products such as lipstick/lipgloss I dont mind at all. I have never found a scent that actually bothers me. I LOVE MACs vanilla scent… vanilla is simply the best scent in the world. Lip balms are another story. I usually find a correlation between heavily-synthetic scents and how well they moisturize. Just somthing I have noticed. But natural scents from oils like Carmex dont bother me.

Carrie Ann Avatar

I like the scent of MAC lipsticks and I think any lip product with a minty scent feels refreshing. It doesn’t bother me at all, as long as the scent is not overwhelming or sickeningly sweet and the ingredients they use doesn’t irritate my lips. In fact, I prefer sweet scents to the sometimes plastic way a lipstick can smell if they don’t add any scent at all.

Hayley Avatar

I do have a problem with some scented lip products. I prefer them to be unscented or have a slight vanilla-scent. If it has a lotion or perfume scent (or fruity scent), I can’t stand it. It really bothers me because then I end up not reaching for them! :/

Abbie Avatar

It really depends on how strong it is and how I like the scent. I really like the light, fresh rose scent on the Rimmel Moisture Renew lipsticks and the light sweet scent on the Revlon lip butters. However, Estee Lauder lipsticks smell DISGUSTING to me. I can’t even go near one, it gives me a headache.

Maggie Avatar

Since you say “lip products,” then my answer is “not always.” If brands are able to do so, a line of lip products without scent/fragrance should be released. Scents/fragrances sometimes have the tendency of making me nauseous if the scent doesn’t dissipate or gives me a headache. Also, I have a couple besties who have had to turn away from many brands bc their lips are sensitive to irritation from scents. I despise missing out on brands just bc I hate the scent and know that I would never reach for it if I bought it.

Carmel Avatar

I already posted on the facebook post but I’m back again to say what a big surprise it is to find that so many people actually like MAC-vanilla – even people who can’t deal with other scents! I have the opposite principle to you, Christine: I don’t mind floral and other normal perfume scents, but absolutely hate anything that smells of food, especially VERY STRONGLY of food, the way MAC does). I think of makeup as being more like paint than anything else, and the whole food thing just doesn’t go along with that. The most affection I can call up for any lip product scent is for Chanel, which I find highly, well, tolerable.

Avril Avatar

I like the MAC vnilla scent, and a few others. If it smells like a candy, it’s okay. If it smells like a plastic strawberry, it’s not.

Perfume scented is just weird, and tastes bad (not that one should lick their lips so often, but if it’s that noticeable…).

I think NYX should scent their products or put more effort into unscenting them.

I have a lot of scent allergies, and even scents I’m not allergic to I can be very sensitive too. If a lipstick is very lightly scented, it’s okay, but if it’s strongly scented I have to descent it by leaving it open for a day or two before I can wear it without having a sneezing fit within about twenty seconds of putting it on or developing a headache.

So generally I come down pretty heavily on the side of ‘unscented.’ Light mint or vanilla scents are okay.

Michilicious ~ Avatar

If I like the scent, then yes, I appreciate that. If not, I’d prefer it to be unscented (or have a better scent). 😛
Some scents I like are vanilla, toffee, mint and watermelon~ And I’d totally buy a lip product that smelled like rum or a yummy kind of tea…

Dinitchka Avatar

I prefer non-scented lip products, though I don’t like my lip products to smell like chemicals either.

I do like the light vanilla scent of MAC lip products. I like the scent of EOS lip products. Basically, if I have to choose a lip product with a scent it would be vanilla, honey, mint/menthol, fruity and food.

chelsea Avatar

I like scents when they smell like something you’d put in your mouth (mint, candy, etc) lol. Floral scents are the most disgusting scents any cosmetic company could put into a lipstick eww.

Stephanie Avatar

Most of my lip products are MAC. I have mixed feelings about their scent. Most of the time I don’t mind it but sometimes I wish their stuff was either unscented or had a different scent. Of the other products I do have, a few are minty, a couple fruity and the others unscented. The fruity ones are just ok to me and I like the mint but feel like it can be drying at times. I’m fine with unscented and definitely do not care for anything that’s a more perfumey scent.

I do find myself reaching more and more for the lip products that aren’t MAC. The scent is wearing on me a bit I guess.

Pamela Avatar

I prefer unscented because the scent lingers under my nose and, whether I like the fragrance or not, it will begin to irritate me. I’m pregnant so my nose is extra sensitive now so I’ve had to put my MAC colors in storage until I can tolerate them again. 🙁

Megan Avatar

I love the way MAC Lipsticks smell. They have the best scent ever. It isn’t over the top, but it makes me want to wear their lipsticks. I like vanilla, fruit and coconut scents for lip products. I absolutely can’t stand floral smell for cosmetics. It just smells old!

wallflower Avatar

i LOVE scented lip products, but only if its a pleasant smell to me and not too obnoxiously strong.
it just makes me want to wear it more, and a pleasant, sweet fragrance is one of the most important things that i look for in a gloss. if i really like the smell and the color is ok, it can make me buy the product.
i like vanilla, candy smells the most, fruity smells can be a hit or miss, but i really do not like lippies that smell like strong perfume. many high end brands seem to believe that they must make their makeup smell of roses and other type of flowers and it will be appealing to their customers but i think (and the comments show it too) that it’s quite the opposite and turns many ppl off.
