What is your makeup removal routine?
What is your makeup removal routine? What do you remove first? What products do you use?
If it’s heavier eye makeup, I typically use a cleansing oil (which one simply depends on what I have on hand or what I’m testing, but my default is shu uemura’s). If it’s a lot of long-wearing eye makeup, I will also use a separate eye makeup remover after I’ve done my face with a product like Lancome Bi-Facil. For lighter makeup, a lot of cleansers breakdown the majority of the product, and then I’ll use a toner afterward to ensure the rest is off (as well as around the edges of my face).

I take off my eye makeup with Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover and a cotton pad. Then I use a cream cleanser like the Body Shop’s Aloe Calming Facial Cleanser and rinse it off with warm water, following up with the Aloe Calming Toner.
All natural sweet almond oil for face and eyes. Or sometimes Clinique or Estee Lauder for eyes. Then I wash my face after…
I’m really simple: I use an eye makeup remover and my normal face wash. The eye makeup remover is some drugstore brand, and I can never remember what it is. When I need more, I just look around until I recognize the bottle 😛
For eyes I use Clinique Take the Day Off. Then a MAC Wipe for the rest of the face. Then I either wash with Clarisonic and Philosophy’s Purity or just with Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser, moisturize face, moisturize around eyes and off to bed I go! Oh, and lip balm, like EOS or Nivea!
I take off my eye makeup with Philosophy’s Release Me makeup remover, and then if I’ve used foundation or just generally a lot of face makeup that day, I’ll wash my face with my Philosophy Purity cleanser to get it all off. On days where I’ve just used powder, it’s usually all worn off by the time I go to remove my eye makeup, so I usually just wet a small washcloth with ice water to refresh my skin and wipe away any oil or dirt. 🙂
ok my routine is kinda weird, i use neutrogena make up remover towelettes on my eyes, trying not to rub too hard on them (i have sensitive eyes, and also i’m not trying to really get in there and remove EVERYTHING i just want to get the majority of it all off), then sometimes but not always i cleanse my face (i usually do that either once in the morning, or once at night, and when i’m removing make up it’s usually at night and i just wait until the next morning to cleanse), i think i’m using philosophy cleanser now, then usually when i’m done with that the rest of the make up falls to my lower lid and i look like i’ve just been crying lol and i gently wipe that off with the neutrogena towelette again. afterwards i spray my whole face with mac’s fix+, it smells amazing and it puts vitamins and nutrients back onto my face, sometimes i use a toner/astringent/witch hazel, i usually use it on my eyelids (cos they get very oily) and other oil prone areas like my t-zone, occasionally my mouth and chin area get dry during this process sometimes so i’ll put a moisturizer in those areas specifically.
ok typing this all out makes it sound really long and drawn out but in actuality it only takes me a few minutes to do this
I remove my eye makeup with Sonia Kashuk’s eye makeup remover. Then Ponds cold cream (my 2nd tub i love that stuff) for my face makeup, which I will wash off after a face massage. I will go on to cleanse with Dr Bronner’s magic liquid soap Upon rinsing off, I gently wipe the entire face with toner (alcohol-free)to ensure all makeup has been removed.
MAC Cleanse off oil – to remove my makeup.
Olay total effects foaming cleanser – to wash my face.
Bioderma – to tone my face and remove any residue left.
Regardless of how much makeup I have worn during the day, MAC cleanse off oil takes care of it! Then I follow with a cleanser, I don’t really have a favourite and I tend to switch cleaners up a lot! If I am feeling super lazy or tired, I just use a yes to blueberries wipe and it takes everything away too! I love these wipes because they are the only ones I have found that dont sting my eyes and my skin doesnt feel crazy dehydrated afterwards! If Im REALLY lazy i dont even need a moisturiser afterwards…. but that doesn’t happen often and NEVER 2 nights in a row.
What do you recommend for someone with dry skin? I’ve tried tons of stuff, but it all makes my face peel a little bit on my forehead and nose…
I take off my eyemakeup using Jojoba Oil. I put a drop on my finger and then gently rub it into my lashes. Afterwards I wash my face with Desert Essence face wash, which isn’t an oil cleanser but removes every last drop of face makeup. Sometimes I’ll use Oil Cleaners instead (Kanebo softymo)
I use jojoba oil to get off stubborn eye makeup. For face makeup, it’s either a wipe (whatever’s on sale) or cetaphil.
I’m trying to get better about removing my face makeup at night instead of sleeping in it and washing it off in the morning. But I never bother removing my eye makeup until the morning.
I use the Fresh Soy Cleanser that gently removes makeup and if there’s still a little eye makeup left, I use a little Clinique Take the Day Off on a cotton ball or cotton swab.
…I’m really lazy and use makeup-removing wipes from CVS. Hey, they do the job!
I usually use the Neutrogena wipes with the hydrating formula. If I have on a crap ton of eye makeup, liner, lash glue, and all that then I will soak a cotton ball in remover and hold it on my eye then wipe. My two favorites have been the Neutrogena Oil-Free and Lancome Bi-Facial. To finish it off, I just wash my face with a cleanser. I’d love to get a Clarisonic to add to the routine!
First, a good ole soap and water scrubbing. Then makeup remover wipes for the more stubborn facial makeup. Finally, if I wore heavier eye makeup, I’ll go back over it with a makeup remover (usually Almay’s works fine for me) and get those areas. Then I wash and rinse one more time with soap and water. 🙂
Neutrogena oil-free make up remover on cotton pad and I lightly press it against my eyes for 1-1/2 minutes per eye to remove all eye make-up, it usually melts everything off (including fake lashes). I know Lancome bi-facil is highly praised but I feel like it doesn’t take off eyelash glue as quick and as well as Neutrogena. Then afterwards I wash my face with cleanser, then a vitamin b5 + aloe vera water, then toner ect.
I take off my eye/lip makeup with Clinique Take the Day Off. And then I use a cleansing milk to remove the makeup on my face before washing it with my regular cleanser. Despite the fact that I enjoy wearing makeup, most of the time I breathe a sigh of relief when it’s all removed!
Remove eye makeup with bi facil. If I’m wearing heavy makeup I’ll use ole truth to go wipes or Josie maran bear naked wipes then cleanse with clarisonic w/ perricone citrus wash followed with lush toner. About once a week I’ll use a wipe and exfolikate. If I’m being lazy just a wipe and toner. And on a normal day just the clarisonic and toner.
I remove my makeup using a home made remover made with filtered water and extra vergin oil – you may not believe it, but oil removes makeup perfectly and effortlessly, and it doesn’t make my skin dry at all. Then I wash my face using Aleppo soap, which is 100% natural – last but not least, I apply a moisturizing face cream to make sure my skin keeps hydrated and smooth.
It depends how much and what type of makeup I have on. For me, the only big issue in terms of removal is MAC’s Pro Longwear concealer, which really lives up to its name, so most of the time, I’ll use a specific eye makeup remover (Clarins or else Clinique’s Take the Day Off or Rinse Off Solvent) and then wash my face fully with a foaming facial cleanser. If I’m wearing a long lasting foundation, I’ll use MAC’s cleansing oil on my whole face (including eyes) and then use a foaming, wash off facial cleanser after that (depending on my mood, I’ll use Pur Minerals, Jouviance, Erno Laszlo Sea Mud Soap, Clarins foaming face wash or one of the many others I have hanging around)
I use the Sonia Kashuk Eye Makeup Remover (LOVE!), the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes for the rest of my face and follow up with Cetaphil’s Cleanser to make sure there is no leftover/residue.
I use boscia makeup breakup cleansing oil on a dry face (and eyes) then wet my fingers and go back over the oil to emulsify it. I then rinse my face and follow with my normal evening cleanser.
I remove my eye makeup with Pond’s Cold Cream Makeup Remover. Then, I use a makeup remover wipe such as the Kirkland brand wipes to remove my face makeup. Lastly, I wash my face using my L’oreal 360 Cleanser for Acne. Then, I moisturize, and if needed, apply a dab of straight apple cider vinegar to any pimples (makes them go away so much faster!). Lip balm, and done!
Alcohol free babywipes and a toner if I’m bothered. My face is always immaculate after wards and I don’t spend ridiculous amounts of money on things that don’t work for me. I have never used a makeup remover that has worked better than a baby wipe
i use target brand eye makeup remover (which works really well!) then i wash my face with neutrogena face wash then clean n clear toner
I take off my make-up with gentle products and I always use Bio rosewater after that ( Sanoflore, 7, 50 €, don’t know if you have that brand in the US, oterwise you can use So Bio Etic rosewater which is very good too ), I also use Jonzac Thermal water.
I’m lazy so I just wash my face with a cheapo face brush and OHWTO Black Magic cream soap and then go back with a q-tip soaked in Rimmel eye makeup remover and clean up the eyes from the mascara left over. Doing the eyes first seems to take longer and after washing my face I just have to pull out the q-tips again anyway to clean up what I missed.
I use MAC Cleanse-off Oil every night, no matter if I wore makeup or not. After that I sometimes use Kiehl’s Yerba Mate Tea Cleanser and Toner. Then I apply my Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream and Eye cream with avocado.
Grapeseed oil and a warm washcloth! Then I use my regular cleanser (at the moment Avalon Organics CoQ10 Cleansing Milk) to help wash off the leftover oil. Jojoba, sweet almond, just about any oil works great — I just read that grapessed oil is slightly astringent, which is good for my normal/oily skin.
Like some others above, I use Sonia Kashuk’s Eye Make-up Remover (from Target) with a cotton square. Then I usually just wash with Cetaphil. I think I might try Pond’s tho’.
BTW, if you haven’t tried the Sonia Kashuk, you should. It’s a BiFacil dupe but much cheaper, very gentle and non-stinging and just melts off the eye makeup without tugging. I always pimp it every time this question comes up ’cause I want it to be so successful they never stop making it. 🙂
Thanks for telling us about the dupe! I will have to check that out! 🙂
For eyes: Diadermine Eye perfect. I actualy soac 2 cotton pads and lightly press them on my eyes, to losen the makeup, then I gently swipe them.
For face: I dab 3 squirts of Apivita Cleansing milk for normal/dry skin (although I have combination) and gently massage my face and neck. Then I take it off with cotton balls. I completely remove it with Apivita Tonic Lotion for normal/oily skin.
Finaly, I use a local brand light washing gel and pat dry.
It may sound like much, but no matter how tired I am, I never allow myself to go to bed with any hint of makeup on.
I use sweet almond oil on my eye makeup, then wipe it off with a tissue. Then I wash my face with hot water and some Nivea gel cleanser which I’ve been using for two years without learning the name of (it’s definitely blue though). Finally, I tone with either witch hazel (in the morning or any time I’m around people), or apple cider vinegar (at night, as long as no one else is there – it is stinky).
I also have half a bottle of MAC Cleanse Off Oil in my bathroom, but it was more useful when I wore long-wearing foundation. For eye makeup, plain oil just seems more effective. Interesting to find out what other people are doing with their skincare!
I use the Neutrogena makeup remover wipes to remove my make-up and then i wash my face with an Olay foaming face wash to get it all off. I then just use some moisturizer and an acne treatment. Works pretty well.
I remove my eye makeup by squirting Avon Eye Makeup Remover onto a cotton ball and wiping my eyelids and eyelashes with the ball; I repeat the steps until most of the eye makeup is gone. To remove face makeup afterwards, I get my face wet and massage it for a minute with St. Ives Makeup Remover before rinsing it off. Afterwards, I use my regular skincare.
Eye Make-up Removal: I moisten 2 cotton balls (1 on each eye) with a tiny amount of NARS Waterproof Makeup Remover and wipe away.
Face Make-up Removal: I use Olay Wet Cleansing Cloth to remove my face make-up. Then I wash my entire face with Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple Facial Cleansing Gel. I don’t rub my face with towel since my skin is very sensitive and dry. While my face is still damp, I tone with Murad Essential C-toner or Shu Uemura Depsea water.
MAC’s Cleanse Off Oil takes all the makeup off my face. Then I wash with my Body Shop Tee Tree Facial Wash, tone with witch hazel, and moisturize with argan oil.
I use just plain old jojoba oil on a damp wash cloth to remove my makeup. It breaks it down really well so i can make sure all the makeup is off. Then i wash my face and use a toner. Then i moisturize.
As soon as I get home from work or after a day out, my make-up comes off (even if I am going back out again). I use what ever samples I can get my hands on and cotton pads/squares. When I am done with the samples, I go on to my make up remover towelettes. I had some generic ones I got my Sam’s Club. They worked well, were moist and did not aggravate my skin. I have also used baby wipes. Which work well. I now use 2 different ones I picked up at the Dollar Tree. These towelettes IMO are 110% better than MACs wipes and VERY moist. Plus they do not aggravate my skin. They soften mascara so well, I barely have to wipe my eyelashes.
If I am going back out, I then wash my face (currently a sample of Jurlique balancing foaming cleanser#, moisturize #currently a sample of Sisley-Paris moisturizer#, eye gel #currently Michael Todd), and a slather of a random EOS lipbalm.
If I am not going back out, I put my hair up and relax. That night when I shower I will do my face routine.
I’ve never found anything that removed eye makeup better than good ol’ fashioned vaseline! You have to be careful not to get it into your eyes, but it does a great job of wiping away all of the mascara, shadow, liner, etc., etc. I usually follow up with Bobbi Brown oil cleanser that I wipe off with MAC wipes. A couple of nights a week I will also follow up with my clarisonic. Great topic!
I use grapeseed oil because it seems to have an astringent quality to it that doesn’t break me out. Plus, it takes off waterproof mascara. I wipe all of the oil off & then use my clarisonic with a glycolic cleanser, tone with witch hazel pads, splash with ice cold water & then, if that isn’t enough I use my NuFace device. I then wait about a half hour to put on Retin-A, eye cream & a serum on my neck.
Wow, I’m exhausted just writing about it!
I apply ponds cold cream on a baby wipe and remove my makeup. But if I have stubborn mascara or eye makeup I use olive oil in addition. Then I wash my face with curticura soap. and use my face brush in addition especially if I had a lot of makeup that day.
If I’ve been wearing the makeup all day, the natural oils in my skin breaks down everything enough that my regular facial cleanser will get everything off.
Otherwise I’ll use Neutrogena Eye Makeup Remover Lotion – I found their oil-free liquid made my skin peel.
My makeup removal routine consists of using M.A.C Wipes, (both sides) then taking Ponds cold cream (cucumber) and then use another M.A.C wipe to get wipe off the cold cream. My skin feels like a baby…
Twice a week, I use my clarisonic with My M.A.C Cream Wash.
Not too complex really, I take my eye makeup off with Simple eye makeup remover on a cotton-feel Kleenex little towelette, if it has been a really heavy makeup day I might use two, one for each eye, but usually one is enough. Then I use a cleanser, in the morning it is Soap & Glory’s Peaches ‘n’ Clean cleansing milk, on an evening at the moment it is L’Occitane’s sweet almond and apple cleansing oil but I’ll use a different one occasionally such as L’Occitane’s Olive foaming cleanser.
I spritz with toner (Lush’s tea tree one) and then wipe off. On a morning I use Soap & Glory’s moisturising gel for oily T zone’s, which is THE greatest moisturiser I’ve ever used, it sinks in totally very quickly which no other moisturiser I’ve ever tried has done, and my skin just drinks it up. I’ll also use a little E45 cream on my cheeks if I’m going swimming as chorine makes my normally invisible eczma flare up all red and itchy, a little layer protects it at least a bit. On an evening I might experiment with a few other products I rotate through like Soap & Glory’s night cream (which NEVER sinks in lol) or a serum, but in general that’s it. I have very very oily skin which I control very well with this routine and the right makeup so I’m fastidious about keeping to a great skincare routine. If I go away for one or two wipes I can handle a face wipe but any longer and I decant and take all of my usual products.
Whew long!
I take off my eye makeup first with some Bioderma Crealine/Sensibio on a cotton ball, and let that kind of dissolve my mascara and concealer for a few seconds. Then I take a wipe to the rest of my face and get the majority of my foundation and blush off. Lastly, I use a hot cloth cleanser (Liz Earle or Boots’ version) to get every last remaining trace! 🙂
On light make up days i use lancomes bi-facil for my eyes then cleanse with estee lauders verite cleanser and tone with elemis soothing apricot toner.
On heavier make up days i wash my face first with purity made simple then follow with my light make up removal routine.
Eye makeup first, since that requires more delicacy; then face makeup. I just leave lip makeup usually.
(Baby wipes, fragrance-free when I can find them.)
I use a eye makeup remover since I normally use a lot of eye products and mascara. Then I wash my face with a cleanser to break down the makeup. Then to really clean and exfoliate, I use Philosophy’s Microdelivery exfoliator. After that I use Sephora’s toner to make sure everything is off. I follow with a moisturizer right after to make sure I do not over dry.
I hold a ponds nightime wipe against my eyes for a few moments to loosen any makeup and gently wipe away the day. If I have more makeup than normal, I’ll use the Neutrogena version. Those cleansing wipes have changed my life in the past couple years. And I combine coupons and sales at drugstores to get them for super cheap.
