Is it easy to find the right foundation match for you? Or is it always a struggle?
I can usually find a shade that matches well enough within a range, because I am not on either extreme end of the spectrum (neither really, really fair or deeper in complexion), but I do find many warm options tend to run yellower than my particular skin tone needs. I also find that I’m in-between light-medium and medium, so I often have to mix to get the right shade or use the lighter liquid and a darker powder (or vice versa).

Yes, generally I’m the second lightest shade when it comes to face makeup- powders, foundations, and usually concealers too. Unless the range has a really extensive shade selection, that is!
Generally it’s easy to find a match for my face; lately the struggle has been admitting that I am pale enough to use the lightest shade of my current foundation! 🙁

I have the same issue with warm colors leaning yellow, which ends up looking the tiniest bit too dark next to the translucent color of my decolletage. I counter it with slightly pigmented finishing powders.
I’m on the extreme end of fair and it’s soooo frustrating! Barely anything een comes close and when it does it tends to be too yellow or too pink. Wish more companies would make more neutral and fair shades that are actually FAIR not some weird dirty lobster bisque color (I’m looking at you Laura Mercier).
Haha- totally agree, esp about LM ! I refuse to wear pinkish foundations- I stick to Jane Iredale and Bare Minerals because of this.
agree…also kind of all drugstore stuff is like that too…
i have the exact same problem! yellow-based ones turn way too orange when they’re dark already (i.e. MAC nc15) and pink-based ones are too pink. i think the brands are forgetting that there are super pale people with neutral undertones. it’s so hard to find a decent fair shade that doesn’t make me look ill or weirdly beige. mixing foundations with Illamasqua’s new skin base SB01 (pure white) sometimes helps.
They forget anyone have neutral undertones ~sigh~ I might order SK in the future but I don’t use liquids much cuz you either need to mix or not use it at all and it can get so expensive >< I've been really liking the Graftobian HD Creme in the fairer neutral shade though! Porcelain I believe. Paler than any liquid I've gotten samples of.

I am in the same position. If you don’t mind waiting for it to ship from the UK, try Illamasqua’s skin base. It is a fantastic foundation that is ACTUALLY fair!
I might try it some day! Kinda scared it’d pull too yellow or pink. I’m quite happy with my Graftobian HD Creme in Porcelain though! Maybe you should check then out too cuz thu have 3 different undertones with many many shades for each. Porcelain is the lightest neutral one 😀
I’m the exact same, and when you add in oxidation 9 times outta 10 i end up looking like an ooompa loopa, so not a cute look :(. Plus i hate when sales girls can tell they dont have anything fair enough for you but try to talk you into buying there fairest shade anyways as, ‘it’ll add a little colour to your face and make you look healthy’, no dammit, i’m fair and proud, i want my skin to be matched to its actual skin colour!!!
IKR?! I hate looking darker! I think pale skin is so much more beautiful and elegant than purposely tanned skin.
Totally agree with you. I think pale skin looks more striking and soft compared to grossly tanned skin.

Bobbi Brown Natural Finish Foundation in Alabaster is, I believe, the lightest of that entire line, and the only thing I’ve been tried that’s been light and neutral enough for me. I like it a lot, but it’s always such a bummer to read reviews of awesome foundations and know that I probably won’t even be able to try them. I’ll never really know if there is something better out there than BB – maybe even something cheaper – because none of them match anyway.
very difficult, most foundations either turn orange (yellow toned ones) or pink/gray (pink toned ones) on me. I have olive undertones, oily, acne prone skin, so its been difficult finding the right foundation that wont break me out, oxidize, stay matte (at least keep me matte longer than 5 hours)and stay on my face. The only foundation shade that matches and doesnt oxidize right now for me is the MUFE HD 153. It does stay but doesnt do anything with the oil control. I still tend to get shiny, and i just blot it off. wish more brands make olive toned foundations!
Check out Illamasqua, they have quite an impressive range of foundations.
I have the exact same issue as you do ! I have very oily,problematic skin with olive undertone. I am currently using EDM mineral foundation as they do mineral foundations for olive undertone, and it’s currently too hot to use liquid foundation in Australia! I will have to give MUFE HD foundation a try when it cools down a bit.
I’m nearly the exact shade as Christine, so it’s generally pretty easy for me. Unlike her, though, I’m not fond of mixing shades so I generally jut go lighter and blend more.
No – I always have to mix my foundations and it’s really irritating haha. My parents are on the complete opposite spectrum skin color wise and when they had me, I was just this shade in the middle that kept getting darker (and than lighter) as time went on. I always keep a foundation on hand that’s a shade too light and a shade too dark just for mixing purposes (I usually end up mixing these two shades for the perfect foundation on a daily basis anyway…)
I’m a pretty solid medium, so finding something in the right general area isn’t an issue. I am full Filipino so I do have an issue with foundations that are just that little bit too pink, but I found that mixing a bit of Clinique’s Redness Solutions powder (which I originally started using as my cheeks are quite red) with my setting powder helps quite a bit.
No but I don’t like foundations ! The best for me are ” Lingerie de Peau ” from Guerlain and ” Double Wear ” from Estée Lauder. I choose medium beiges such as outdoor beige for the Estée Lauder foundation. I hope the new Benefit foundation is pretty and easy to wear, here in France I don’t know when Benefit launches ?
It’s almost impossible. In 7 years of actually wearing foundation I’ve only found two that really match my natural skintone–specifically during the winter months. I’m quite light, but I have a mixture of olive and yellow undertones, but the depth of the undertones varies day to day. It sounds weird, I know. I generally try to keep a few different foundations around that differ slightly in tone so that I can mix & match if I need to. I have Nars Sheer Glow in Ceylan , MUFE HD #117 and then MUFE HD #123 to mix with the others if they’re looking too dull.
It’s easier in the summer, though, because when I get darker I’m strictly olive. I hate to tan, but it’s so much easier to just use the HD 123 or Neutrogena HS #60 or #90 by themselves.
If I lived in the US, it would be even more easier for me. Unfortunately in Australia, a lot of brands don’t stock the shades marketed for “Asians”/yellow toned ie. the Dior shades ending with 1 (we get all the other numbers) and the Nars shades marked for “Asian skin” (Gobi, Ceylan) which I find extremely weird because there’s A LOT of Asians over here! It’s really really weird… but I can’t complain, there’s still a lot of variety to choose from.
I do OK in terms of skin tone. I’m NC30, so usually there’s something for me. It’s my undertone that gives me more problems. Mine is quite warm and yellow, so most foundations are just too pink for me! At the moment I’m using Bourjois Healthy Mix, which is surprisingly a budget-conscious great match for my skintone/undertone!
Being a woman of color, it is always a struggle. It’s either too peachy or too yellow. When I find a product that works, I always have to buy a much lighter shade to mix.
It’s very difficult and then you have to do it all over again in the summer when your tan. Pain!
i’ve been looking for the right shade for about six years, and i finally found it yesterday (MUFE’s mat velvet + 15). all of my previous tries (MAC, smashbox, bobbi brown) are far too yellow. i have incredibly fair, slightly pink-toned skin, so finding a match is a constant project. being a ghost is hard, ya’ll.

I only have some general weirdness in lines that think 3-4 is an acceptable shade range. In a normal foundation line, I’m at least 2-4 shades from the fairest, because I’d consider myself light and not fair. But there are several product lines that don’t go light enough for me…it’s been hell finding a decent tinted moisturizer. Like 75% of them were obviously too dark for me, and for a less pigmented product on someone who is not ultra fair, that’s kind of ridiculous.
I lean a little pinker, so sometimes I have issue dealing with a line that runs yellower. I can deal with neutral to pink undertones. And again, if the product has branched out to like 6+ shades, there’s usually one that’s close to my color.
I feel for people at both ends of the spectrum. A lot of brands don’t go anywhere near as dark as what’s commonly seen in the general population…and then anyone on the ultra-fair or ultra-deep scale is just way SOL. :/
I think I’m a bit fairer than you (according to the foundation matrix, I’m nw15), but I’ve found a couple of tinted moisturizers that work. The Covergirl Aquasmoothers one in light, the lightest one, matched me well, and it’s sheer enough for you to use a light or dark powder if necessary. It’s not really yellow, either. I liked using the Mark Get a Tint one (lightest shade) in summer, but now it’s just too orange and dark for me. It might work for you, though, since you’re a little darker than I am.
I’ve been liking Smashbox, luckily they had what they considered a “fair” shade, but my mom and sister are close to porcelain and would be out of luck.
I might check out the Covergirl one, especially if I get through the Smashbox one without one of the nice 20% Ulta coupons, since it’s $30 retail. Thanks for the tip, I actually wear CG concealer so if there’s a shade in that to match, it’ll probably work out well.
Thank goodness Estee Lauder has not discontinue Lucidity liquid foundation which I have worn over the last 20 years or so….I may have tried other brands within these 20 years, but I always go back to Lucidity…..it does not dry my skin yet wont make my skin feel oily since it is oil free especially when I had acne in my younger days. The best part about Lucidity that it has shades for pink or yellow undertones and have light and dark shades. And it super easy to work with. I cannot say enough positive things about this product…Although, I always feel Estee Lauder makes products for non- Asian skin, this is one product that works well with my skin tone. Even though MAC is now own by Estee Lauder, MAC decreases the amount of product like their Studio Fix powder…Estee has been consistent with me.

Absolutely not! I am rather fair and I have pinkish undertones. When I try foundations for mac, I feel that I always look really yellow :/ and then other brands don’t usually go as fair as need be for my skin tone :/ it is rather frustrating and one of the reasons I don’t wear foundation!
Hi i’m medium tan and have an underlying pink tone to my skin so its always frusturating to find a perfect match, all the pink based ones make me look too white and yellow based ones make me too yellow, plus a darker chin area where everything turns ashy !!!right now bobbi brown natural finish in Honey(5),is the best match ive found 🙂 and i just skip the chin..:)
Sadly no 🙁 even when companies make very light foundations, the lightest shade (or shadeS, plural) are not sold in my country. They probably think we all have tanned skin… My next foundation will be Inglot’s AMC foundation, with all those available shades there should be the one for me, I hope 😉
Depends on the brand and the foundation. I recently switched to Guerlain Lingerie de Peau and my choices were either too yellow or too pink (I’d have preferred a neutral but went with the “too pink” as it still looks good). In Clarins, it can be tricky for me. MAC – never a problem.

Not really, no. Brands tend to think that since my country is in the south of Europe we are all medium toned and/or tanned. Being pale it’s very difficult to find a shade that matches me, since most brands don’t even have available all of their colour range.
I would say that it’s a rather dauting task LOL. I am nc35 and I have the worst time looking for foundation. For me I find that many foundations leave an orange cast on my face. I think the main problem is that many times we try foundation in-store and the lighing is the worst !! When I go outside I look like that angry orange. Even with nc35 it leaves a dullness to my skin but so far has been the best because I can highlight my face ( I’ve tried MUFE. Chanel, Laura Mericer, and countless others). I guess you can’t win them all.
Generally I have no problems since I am between medium and tan (NC 37) with quite a yellow undertone. What I tend to do is to put my usual foundation and mattifying powder a tad darker. The problem comes from winter to summer, when I get tan and my usual foundation looks a bit lighter. For the rest of the year, no problem!
NO WAY! My skin has very yellow/ olive skintone and am very particular about the finish and the type of my foundation and most often than now, I would have to resort to higher end or medium range brands in order to get a good match because most drugstore foundations are still too pink for me. (eg. Revlon Colorstay, which I’ve wanted to try for the longest time but couldn’t!) It’s very complicated for me–even MAC couldn’t find me match! 🙁 But luckily, I have found one that has finally matched me, the Body Shop’s Extra Virgin Minerals in Golden Ivory! So I guess I don’t have to go through the hassle–at least not until this gets discontinued (but crossing my fingers that it won’t!)

Never – my skin must have 3 different colors or something, because one foundation can not cover my entire face evenly. I’ve given up and have taken to using tinted moisturizer + light powder (or sometimes none at all) nowadays. The last time I (thought) I found the right foundation was in high school. 🙁
I don’t think it’s too hard for me to find a good foundation shade, but I agree with many that the undertones in a lot of foundations run too extreme one way or another. And I find that MUAs can /never/ agree on it. I’ve been described as yellow (and olive), and then pink within a month. And two of those were by the same brand!
Now if only one of these foundations wouldn’t be perfumed. Both of my foundations are perfumed and I hate it.
Being very pale (last shade before pure white) and with a neutral-beige undertone, no, it’s very complicated. Luckily, they invented mineral foundations!
I’m still searching for a foundation that matches my skin tone, most od them are too dark and if I find one that might be light enough it has indredients in it my skin doesn’t tolerate. So I’ve basically neer really usd foundation, only compact powder, and finding that in the right shade is also really difficult. Extremely frustrating!
OMG the day that i find (?) MY perfect foundation match i’ll make it nation holiday…anyway i have dark skin but don’t have a drop of red in me and i find that most brand when making dark/warmer fdt they think –> red. I’m as yellow as it gets Mac’s sff in nc45 is the closest match but hate the finish & staying power, other then that i have to mix, always 🙁
I’m on the extremely fair end with neutral undertones and a lot of pink in my skin., so sometimes it is a bit hard because MA’s tend to match me to a foundation with a pink undertone, which I do not have. Bobbi Brown and Cle de peau match me pretty perfectly, and those are really the only foundations I use because I just don’t like the heavy feel of foundation on my skin and those (BB Skin and CDP Refining Fluid) are pretty thin. Otherwise I use tinted moisturizer and I can usually find a match with the lightest shade, i.e. Laura Mericer, Josie Maran, Hourglass, Tarte.
I have a terrible time finding the right foundation shade, as I’m extremely fair-skinned but with a peach/yellow cast rather than a blue cast to my complexion. Many brands don’t make a shade light enough for me, and those that are pale enough are often too blue or pink. I usually end up wearing something that’s a little too dark, but I try to choose foundations with light coverage and then set them with translucent powder so that helps a bit.
The pale word 95% of brands out there I always have to blend with white which is not fun. lol
Thank goodness for Temptalia’s “Match Your Foundation!” I would NEVER be able to match drugstore foundation on the first try. I typically purchase high-end foundation, so I get matched by someone working at the makeup counter.
It’s extrodinarily hard for me to find something that matches because I’m extremely pale and very neutral, and almost everything at almost matches in color is way too pink or yellow. Even then, it’s very rare for me to find anything light enough. Most brands lightest shades are still too dark for me.
I’d say sometimes I have trouble with lines that run too yellow or too pink/peach. My skin color is light, a slightly warm neutral and my best excellent match is Lingerie de Peau #2. I hate when MUA try to convince me that the color they’ve put on me is the right one when it obviously makes me look yellow or an odd peachy shade. I feel like they just give up and try to sell a product rather than being honest and saying,”well it seems our company does not have a good match for your tone or let’s try mixing some colors to see if we can match you better.”
Near impossible for me! I’m fair and PINK – the only one that comes close is MUFE 107 (“deep pink”) which is a bit pale. MAC doesn’t have anything pink enough. And no, I don’t want to ‘correct’ my pinkness with yellow or green tones – my ears, hands, neck etc are pink too! I’m blessed with good skin, so I frequently go without foundation and concealer, rather than wear a mask of the wrong colour.
I have the same problem! I love the MUFE 107 or 110, and I repurchased it a few times, but the last two bottles I bought it felt like the formula had changed? Have you noticed that? It was the only foundation I tried that looked good on my dry skin, but then all of a sudden it started to look dry and cakey–without me changing anything in my routine.

I have noticed this with a couple foundations–not just MUFE. I’m starting to think it’s not the foundation, but something about my skin. I used to adore the L’Oreal True Match (especially price too!) but then it started looking bad–same with a Maybelline one and then with the MUFE. I can’t figure it out at all–now I’m using Diorskin Nude…I wonder if I was getting an older bottle? I have no idea haha.
You’ll probably be okay with it though, I seriously think it’s something about my skin becoming immune to awesome foundation.
LOL no – girls I know always go on about how pale they are even though the second lightest shade always matches them perfectly. I feel like a ghost when they say that, my skin is like paper.

I haven’t used foundation in a while, but I always used to use drugstore brands and was usually lucky enough that the one of the lightest shades in every brand would be work. looking back on it, I’m not sure if they were really good matches or if I settled for “good enough”
It is always a struggle! I am not sure why, as I don’t think I have a particularly uncommon skin tone. I am light-to-medium and Caucasian. I have a very difficult time understanding whether my skin tone is warm or cool, and furthermore, it is difficult to understand MACs shade system, as there is a lot of contradiction (even among MAC MUAs). Several MAC MUAs have matched me with NW20 or so, but it never looks right on my face or matches my neck. Recently, a MAC MUA said I looked more NC25, and while it initially looked yellowish on my skin, after setting for a minute or two, it is a better match to both my face and neck than the NW shades. Still, I haven’t found my HG foundation brand or shade match.
I have the exact problems as you! I’m probably around NC25-30 so light-med is usually a tad too light and med is too dark. Warm foundations also tend to run too yellow for me, but I like sheer formulas so it’s not as big of a deal.
No it is SO hard for me to find the right foundation, because I change colors a lot depending on the season and I have the WEIRDEST coloring
It is always a struggle for me to find the right foundation match. I usually need the lightest or second lightest shade from most brands, but most ranges are either not light enough or neutral enough for my skin tone. I have yet to find a shade that does not leave a visible color disparity even when well blended. I’ve tried some of the foundation lighteners, but they change the consistency of the formula too much. Right now I use MUFE’s HD foundation in Marble because the two lighter shades were too pink, but it’s too dark/orange and mixing it with a lighter foundation creates a mess. Frustrating!
No, I usually run way paler than any of the “Drugstore” Foundations cater for. The only foundation I have ever worn that has matched my skintone flawlessly is Illamasqua skinbase in number 2.
It’s very difficult for me. I am pale with a weird undertone that is neutral but at the same time a bit warm. So most foundations are either too white, too yellow or too pink for me. I am still searching for my perfect match.
For me, I have a very difficult time matching my foundation to my skin. I have sensitive skin, extremely acne prone… but quite dry. Nine times out of ten, if the foundation color is a match, and is recommended for acne-prone skin… it dries me out! The foundations I have found that are non-drying formulations but still okay for my acne prone skin aren’t even close to matching in color, as I am very fair skinned and neutral tone. Right now I am testing MUFE mat velvet in the lightest shade and it hasn’t dried me out and it is the perfect color- not too pink/peach, it is perfect. I really hope it does not cause me an acne flare up, as I am having a great skin day.
i think so. i’m in the light/mediem range with very yellow/olive undertones. My BEST matches in foundation are MUFE HD 123 (liquid) and for powder, Bare essentials matte in “Golden Medium” I used to wear “light” in BE which was a good match, but golden medium is sooo much better in terms of color.
I’d say that it’s generally quite easy. I am the palest of the pale, so I usually just skip to whatever the fairest shade of foundation in a particular range is and see if that works for me. The main issue I run into is that some brands don’t make a shade light enough for me. Although, Makeup Forever HD Foundation in 110 is pretty much the exact same shade as my skin!
Nope. I have combination skin that breaks out with certain ingredients. Also I am usually darker than the last shade for caucasians but much lighter than the lightest shade for ethnic skin tones. I always have to mix two sometimes three colors to find a match. Once I do – I stick to the formula like glue!
It took me years to realize how fair my skin actually is! And that all the accessible foundation brands to me don’t carry shades light enough. I realized this when a rep from Cover FX matched me to the shade E0 and I finally didn’t have people telling me to blend my makeup. Since then I have found Bobbi Brown Lasting Finish foundation in Alabaster 00, and Nars Sibera (which I will admit is a tad yellow, but does help counteract redness). It is surprisingly frustrating and difficult to find a perfect match, as about 95% of brands don’t carry any shades light enough! I am ALWAYS on the hunt for the combination of perfect match and formula for my skin!
No It is so hard for me.I am very very fair and find that I always have some sort of “orangy” look to me.I hate looking like I am wearing a maks. Any suggestions???
Yes- I’m very warm toned, and for some reason, when I find a supposed-to-be-warm and warm-to-the-general-person’s-eyes foundation, it sill goes on looking too cool for me, and the non-foundationed skin looks yellow.

I always get color matched now at Sephora and I won’t ever buy drugstore foundation again! I’m so pale most things from Clinique and all the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizers are way too dark. I really want to try MAC, but I have no MAC near me. 🙁
I used to use a Covergirl cream to powder foundation a few years go all the time and I still have it. The color is terrible on me! I don’t understand how/why I wore it!

Foundation is always a struggle for me. I fall between light and medium-light but my skin isn’t very yellow, nor is it a true neutral. I have found 1 foundation that truly matched my skin and I can’t wear it because it makes me break out like crazy!
I’m actually using the foundation matrix on here to go shopping at Sephora this coming weekend and see if I can’t find something similar, that will work with my skin type (I have huge issues with texture).
I’ve been pretty lucky as far as foundations go (it was concealers that wound up being the harder one to hunt down). I’m Caucasian and very fair, but I have enough pink undertone to knock me up a notch so I’m not in the extremely pale category. I can most often get away with ivory shades, and when I’m at my palest (usually deep winter), I can just mix the lightest shade in a collection with the one I use to lighten it up. Granted, it helps that I apply my foundation sheer, so my own coloration isn’t overpowered.
I’m usually either the fairest or next-to-fairest shade in a range, depending on how extensive it is, although I do have trouble finding makeup that is light enough for me in certain ranges (Benefit and Rimmel come to mind!). My biggest problem is that I have fairly neutral undertones, so it is difficult to find something that doesn’t lean to yellow or too pink, and a lot of “beige” foundations end up looking kind of grey… Above and beyond the issue of the color, I find it really difficult to find a foundation that has the right texture and looks like skin!

Sort of. I’m usually the lightest shade in any foundation. I’ve yet to find a foundation line that had a shade lighter than my skintone. However, I have neutral undertones in my face and most foundations are either cool or warm. Not very many are neutral, so it is tricky sometimes to decide whether or not I should lean towards warm or cool, and really, it depends on the brand as to what constitutes as “warm” and what’s “cool.”
I refuse to mix foundation! My neck is lighter than my face so I usually match my foundations to my neck and that works out for me. And yes, I don’t find it TOO difficult to find a match usually. With some brands though, I don’t seem to have luck as their colours tend to run pink. I found this to be the case with EL Double Wear. Even their neutral colours were too pink on me.
Extremely difficult. I am olive and warm. I also have a deep coloring so it’s a challange to find something that’s not too yellow, pink, neutral or gray 😀
Generally I have to mix or really blend well. I find foundations are either too yellow or too pink, except for the summer when MUFE Face and Body in #34 is perfect. In the winter I’m two shades lighter and don’t seem to match much all that well. Rimmel #130 is working not too bad right now and Lorac breakthrough performance in SMS2 is pretty darn close.
And I HATE when sales people want to help because they ALWAYS want to give me something with too much pink in it – then my face doesn’t match my neck, or arms or chest…ARGH!
Ughhhh… it was pain-in-the-behind. There, I said it.
I have a medium-tan skin tone with a very strong golden-olive undertones, but I can’t wear foundation that is too similar with my complexion (too yellow/olive) or I’ll look jaundiced.
I have a very oily skin, I also live in a very humid country where the sun is torrid all year long, makes me sweat very easily as well. Therefore, my foundations ALWAYS oxidize, no matter what brand I use and how it doesn’t oxidize on most people.
My skin is NC42, but I always wear foundation that’s equal to NC35 (mostly when it comes to mineral foundation), NC37 or NC40, so whenever the foundation oxidize, it’ll match my skintone perfectly. The problem is, every foundations I’ve tried oxidized in a different level, so I don’t have the “1 shade lighter”-recipe when I buy a new foundation. I always have to try it first to see how dark it will be after it oxidizes. Sigh… 🙁
Oh, I also have to mention that most drugstore brand foundation (which mostly only comes with beige-y undertones) looks really, really ashy on my skin, so I can’t wear most drugstore gems just because it’s too beige/gray. 🙁
I fall SO COMPLETELY into the ‘beige’ category, that it is a challenge! Light beige girls- I found a winner! Sally Hansen’s “Natural Beauty Fond de teint” has a great range. Finally!
Wow, so interesting to read all these comments. Most people commenting fall in the very pale category. I fall in the dark category. I’m not the darkest shade, but many companies either have a Beyonce color or a Kelly Rowland color (I’m looking at you Maybelline). Very frustrating!!!! Black people don’t come in 2 shades you know. Some companies won’t even bother catering for my skin tone at all (I guess they just gave up/don’t care, I don’t know).
