Wayne Goss The Anniversary Set Volume 2 First Impressions
Wayne Goss The Anniversary Set Volume 2 ($241.00) includes eight brushes–two for face, six for eyes–and is an updated take on the original Anniversary Set with undyed bristles and slight tweaks to some of the shapes. The set is limited edition, and Wayne Goss releases have a tendency to sell through sooner rather than later (and at the very least, more likely before I’ll have had a real chance to go through and put these brushes through their paces!), so I wanted to share photos of the brushes and some initial thoughts.
The brushes seemed to be consistent with Wayne Goss’ previous brushes with respect to craftsmanship, quality, and look and feel, just with all white-hued brush heads this time around. They seemed slightly softer on average but need to be washed many times and used for awhile to really get a handle (ha, ha) on by how much. The glossy black handles feature pink text with each number at the end of the handle. I didn’t see any obvious issues with how the bristles were lined up for each brush.
Brush 03 is a larger, tapered crease brush and is large enough that it would work best for really diffusing and blowing out a crease color rather than precisely applying it, and it may be too large for some eye shapes. Brush 04 is narrower and has a stronger taper, so it can get into the deep crease and lay down color but has less fluffiness and spring compared to Brush 03, so it won’t diffuse as readily in comparison. Brush 05 is a small pencil brush that came to a stronger point, and it would do well for detail work and getting really precise lash line smudging done, but if one prefers a more blown out lash line, I think this may be too small and tapered without the roundness necessary to really diffuse and blend out product on the lower lash line.
Brush 06 is a medium, rounded brush with light-to-moderate fluffiness and spring; it was actually less fluffy than I expected for blending, but it has the shape of a lot of blending brushes, and the less-fluffy nature should give a more precise blend (which is a good thing). Brush 07 is a small-to-medium sized, flat, rounded eye brush that would work well for patting and packing eyeshadow onto the lid and doing some deeper crease work. It’s a bit flatter than typical dome-shaped eyeshadow brushes and is a lot longer and more yielding than the prior 07. Brush 08 is a flat, fully synthetic brush that’s designed to be a “push liner” brush, but it had quite a bit of length, which gave it better movement for back-and-forth but seemed to bend a bit too readily for pushing motions. The eye brushes seem like a good mix of sizes and shapes to apply and blend out a complete eye look, though Brush 08 doesn’t seem as practical for the greatest number of people as an angled brush would have been (for brows, gel eyeliner, etc.).
Brush 01 is a large, angled stippling brush designed for use with foundation, and it’s quite dense (and wider but more flared than the original). Over the years, while these work well enough with foundation, I find that they require frequent washing to avoid streaky coverage, and they tend to have a longish drying time due to the density. I also see that more and more people prefer using a lot of other shapes and tools for applying foundation that I would have rather seen a blush brush in the set instead, which I think would be more practical for more people.
Brush 02 is a medium, tapered brush that is typically seen in highlighting brushes, and it’s a nice, functional shape that works well for blush, bronzer, highlighter, and contour. I have lots in this vein, and it seems to be a shape that resonates well with others, too, so it seemed like a good inclusion that should work well for most. It is fuller and less tapered with a slightly larger size compared to the previous version.
Overall, I wouldn’t expect anyone who likes their Japanese-crafted brushes to be disappointed by this set with respect to quality. I don’t know that any of the updates or tweaks are functionally different enough that one needs to have both this and the original Anniversary Set (I need to use them in tandem to see), but if you missed the first set, this one seems nice so far!
Thanks. Don’t think #8 would be the best for lay down of CP SSSs. Frankly, doubt it improves on the tiny (was that one #8 as well?) push liner. I have a benefit brush from days of yore that is that shape and stiff. Never use it. These do seem fairly repetitive of earlier offerings, with insufficient tweaking to make any real difference. Think I can pass.
No, I don’t think so. I think the lack of slightly tapered bristles would make picking up a lot of product more of a challenge (like applying a cream eyeshadow onto the lid) – definitely ab rush more suitable for liner and the like.
Ha! BeneFit 08 was one of my first purpose made makeup brushes along with the 05. I thought it was for concealer, but I barely used it for any purpose. I find it too wide and thick and wish it were angled or rounded. My best guess from the pictures is WG 08 will be longer and more tapered.
The only Wayne Goss brush I have is The Air-Brush and I love how soft it is. I think this looks like a nice set but I don’t think I’ll be purchasing it. Brush 8 is definitely a strange addition to the set!
The Air Brush is a goody!
I am SO torn with this release. I purchased 2 of the first anniversary sets (which I have enjoyed immensely), mostly for the big foundation brush, and I really do not want more. It’s a nice enough brush (and efficient), but doesn’t blow me away. And I’d imagine this is the most expensive brush in the set. I also do not care for the synthetic push liner brush. The only use I’ve found for such brushes is to clean up my eyebrows with concealer. They are hard to clean and the bristles get stiff after a few years, so then it’s a throw-away.
I am interested in the eyeshadow brushes, but most seem pretty similar to those in his permanent line. I understand these are different, but I’m not sure the difference will justify the price. That said, I can always use more eyeshadow brushes to use with cream products. It would be interesting experimenting with these.
I’ve fantasized about a #2 with white hair (presumably goat) for ages now. I LOVE the #2 from the first set, and I purchased the #10 hoping to use it the same way (to set under-eye concealer). It works, but is not quite what I am looking for (hairs too short, shape too rounded and fluffy). I’m curious to see how this #2 performs. Wayne said the new one is more rounded, so again, I’m not sure if I’ll be disappointed or not.
$241 is a lot of money to spend when, at best, I will only love 6 of the 8 brushes. I suppose I could give the ones I don’t like away, and hope karma makes up the difference 🙂
Since the push liner brush is now all synthetic, I expect that the quality won’t change over time so much, but if you didn’t have use for it before, it’s still a no-go!
Brush 02 in this set is a bit larger and rounder at the edge, but they are functionally similar to me in practice. If you have smaller features, the original 02 might be a better fit, though.
I appreciate the feedback Christine. After reading your review and trying to sort out my feelings via my comment, I decided to review my current brush wishlist and “curate” my own sets of brushes – with a cap of $240. I figured if I could design a few sets for comparison, I could see how I feel about purchasing based on need vs. want (and based on the fact that I am a huge Goss fan). After I compiled a few fantasy sets, I discovered that it was more emotionally satisfying to fill in gaps in my current collection, rather than purchasing a set on a whim (as a brush lover). I will pass on the set for now.. maybe the set, or some individuals, will be re-released at a later date.
Hi Laurissa I totally recommend Stilazzi brushes. Inexpensive gorgeous I’m a pro MUA Editorial Fashion etc I’ve used these for years and I highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Other lines you may want to consider Make Up For Ever, NARS, Royal and Langnickel have tons of amazing brushes all at varies price points. Good luck with your search. Brushes are my weakness lol.
This set is not luring me in. Seems like the eye shadow brushes are not the types I go for.
Darn!
I love Wayne Goss brushes, but for the price.. the pink lettering is really throwing me off, it screams “cheap and tacky” to me (also, the last thing I’d ever need is another foundation brush!) A
Easy skip 🙂
Brush 08 is a type I never use, due to needing my eye an inch or 2 away from the mirror when I take my glasses off. I’m glad there is nothing really new to this set; I like a tiny brush, like the smallest Chanel eye contouring brush which I can’t find online anymore. Ihave the first set and am happy to save the money. I do love the Wayne Goss brushes I have, but I’m happy not to buy a duplicate set.
Yeah, I think the push liner brush is an odd one to include. I can see a liner brush being included, but of all the kind, that one was a surprise!
Resisting this has been quite hard. I only have one brush from WG and I do love it, 16, i think it is.
I have decided agains buing it as I rarely apply foudation with a brush, I much prefere Beautyblender or fingers. I’m also not a fan of square brushes for eyeliners unless they are really small.
I did compare prices and did a lot of thinking yesterday and decided not to buy the set, but perhaps later buy a few brushes after going through what I have and really make an informed decision, that includes reading your reviews of his brushes, comparing prices and so on.
I’m happy that for once I’ve not fallen for the words “limited edition”.
Good call, Helene! The foundation brush undoubtedly is a good bit of the price (the original Brush 01 is $45, and the updated version is larger), so if it’s not something you’d use, I don’t think the set makes sense.
Thank you 🙂
I wish I can afford the brush set.. but I can’t 🙁
Maybe next time or consider budgeting for individual brushes since the sets aren’t usually offering a lot of savings.
that is a good plan. Thanks, 🙂
Beautylish also offers to split the payment in 3 parts throughout 3 months.
I missed out on the first WG anniversary set so I was torn whether I would purchase this. I had just purchased the Sonia G brush set 3 weeks ago, and that is a fantastic set. I’ve always admired WG brushes and Rae Morris brushes. I finally broke down and bought them, received them the next day and have not looked back. The Sonia G set and the WG set are two great sets to have, as I am more of a beginner than expert when applying makeup. Good makeup brushes make all the difference! Thank you for reviewing these brushes, and if you haven’t reviewed the Sonia G brushes, I would like to make a request to review them. Not only are they great to use but are very beautiful and well made.
Sorry, just realized you did review the Sonia G brushes. Should have checked. I love reading your blog as of late and you are thorough in your reviews. Thank you
purchased the face set 2 months ago and spent time sending emails to Beautylish discussing my frustration with those brushes. Being a busy working MUA….I discovered that the face set is so soft and luscious, however only for powder products. After getting clarification was advised they can be used with creams and foundations. The big but is….that it’s only recommended to shampoo or wet clean the face set and to not use quick drying alcohol based cleaners/sanitizers. The one quick drying bruah cleaner they recommended cannot be shipped to New Zealand. So my review on his face set is that they are meant for individuals to use on their own face…and not for a busy working MUA. They are not a work horse set…just a once a day …luxury set(I say this because they are only recommend To wet wash and this is not viable inbetween clients)
But I love the softness and clients comments. It’s just that I have to choose one client a day to use them on. I’m too scared to use alcohol based quick dry cleaners.
So….back to this set….it seems my ideal brush set has finally been made by Wayne. However I’m now wondering if the softness has been compromised. For a high end luxury set at this price…I expect to have the same quality feeling as the face set. Im glad i can use brush cleaners and sanitizers so i can use them on more than one client and quick clean In between.
Do we think this set is more suited to a busy MUA.
HOW DO I DECIDE.
I only purchase makeup now that has a A rating from this site..and only recommend makeup I Havnt tested myself based on your reviews.
Best site for makeup lovers.
Thank you for your hard work from New.Zealand.

What quick drying cleanser did they recommend, by the by, Corry?
Yeah, I would not recommend these at all for use on clients if you’re not working on just one a day and would avoid heavy, alcohol-based cleansers. I only use them if there’s a stain in a white brush that won’t get out otherwise.
I wouldn’t recommend this set for a MUA – it will have all the same issues you encountered with the Face set. In general, I would say stick with cheaper natural hair (so that you can replace as brushes degrade with prolonged use/exposure to quick-drying cleansers) or go fully synthetic. I used to use MAC’s brush cleanser on all my MAC brushes (all that I used for awhile), and I can tell that some brushes suffered from it, but it wasn’t like… in a year – more like five years. I just imagine as a MUA, synthetics are going to be the easiest to clean all the time with little worry, so maybe just supplement with natural hair for the few brushes you find it really impacts application as a MUA.
Did you ever review the original brush 6? I want to buy 2 of Wayne Goss brushes but I’m having a hard time figuring out which 2 I should go with. I want a good work horse blending brush..One that doesn’t have a lot of give and doesn’t have a really precise tip (I have the #4 only) I was looking into brush 18 but when I read your review I think you said it was poky. So I was thinking the #6 but could not find a review from you. It’s so hard buying brushes at this price when you can’t really see them 🙁 And yours is the only advice I will trust which is why I didn’t buy the #18.. Hopefully I will like what I pick in the end!
I’m not sure – I have tried them all but haven’t had the time to write up reviews!
So Brush 18 from the original launch was one that I didn’t love, but Brush 18 now is very different (shape, type of brush, etc.) and I’d have no trouble recommending that one (https://www.temptalia.com/product/wayne-goss-brush-18-eye-shadow-blending-brush/).
