Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!
Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. Your skin tone/coloring: Light neutral, dark hair, green eyes
Favorite setting/finishing powder? I honestly don’t quite know the difference between setting and finishing powders. I use either Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder (night) or RCMA No Color Powder (day).
Favorite face primer? I don’t use face primers anymore. My two favorite foundations go on better without them. (I do use eyeshadow and undereye primers, though.)
Oh, good – I’m not alone on not understanding the difference between the 2 types of powders!
As much as I am a total makeup junkie, I do admit there are some things I just haven’t figured out yet. LOL
Setting Powder’s purpose is to “set” and/or mattify the makeup (normally, either cream or liquid) so it doesn’t move or slip after it is applied on the skin. Can be tinted or translucent. For example, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder
Finishing Powder is the extra effect you want to add on to the skin (i.e. blurring, “lit-from-within”). For example, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder. It is usually applied after the setting powder.
On its own, finishing powder will not control oil so if you have oily skin, it is recommended to use setting powder then finishing powder if needed. If you have drier skin, you may be able to get away with just using finishing powder as a setting powder.
Hope that helps. ^_^
Very much…thank you!
Skin tone: Very pale with cool undertones, MAC NW 5-10
Favorite setting powder: Ilia Translucent Powder and I am enjoying the Viseart Powder.
Favorite finishing powder: Guerlain Meteorites in Claire. I have also been using Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder in Diffused Light on my lower cheeks.
Favorite face primer: YSL Touche E’Clat Blurring Primer, FAB primer, Smashbox Primer Water and Two Faced Hangover Primer.
Skin tone/coloring : very pale light beige with some texture, light brown hair, green, eyes
Fave setting powder: UD velvetizer
Finishing powder: it cosmetics pores no more
Face primer: elf poreless primer and smashbox hydrating primer
Your skin tone/coloring: Very fair with cool undertones. I’m the type that couldn’t tan if my life depended on it, I just don’t have any warmth in my skin. I’m ghostly white, a sunburned lobster, or somewhere in between.
Favorite setting powder? RCMA no color powder. Not because I think it’s revolutionary or amazing, but I have oily skin so I use a lot of powder and this stuff is super cheap when you consider the amount of product you get (even when converting USD to CAD).
Favorite finishing powder? I don’t really use finishing powder – most have some hint of shimmer in them which I don’t like. I bought hourglass ethereal light a few VIB sales ago thinking I’d love it because it’s essentially a white powder, but it pulls so glittery on me. I just stick to setting powder.
Favorite face primer? I love the way mac strobe cream makes my foundation apply, but I think my oily skin needs something a little more long wearing, but I’ve never found one that’s my ride or die. I tend to use the nars smooth & protect in the summer because of the SPF, but not for any other actual primer benefits.
Your skin tone/coloring: Light warm
Favorite powders? Either KVD Lock-It Brightening (Petal or Peach) + Becca Soft Light Blurring (Golden Hour or Pink Haze depending on my clothing and makeup for the day) or Cover FX Perfect Setting + Hourglass Ambient Lighting in Dim.
Favorite face primer? It was Urban Decay Pore Perfecting which is discontinued and I’m just now running out so I’m looking for a replacement… Right now I’m using MUFE Smoothing which is good but I still like the UD better.
Your skin tone/coloring: Medium w/ olive undertones MAC NC37, Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation N360, Fenty ProFilt’r Foundation 260 or 290.
Favorite setting powder? I only very rarely use one because they can make my skin look very dry. My previous favorite has been Nyx HD Finishing Powder. But I’m now on the hunt for something that won’t make my 59 y.o. undereye area appear shriveled.
Favorite finishing powder? WnW Reserve Your Cabana bronzer. With the only problem being that the one I purchased 2 or 3 years ago was slightly darker and less shimmery. The one I bought last summer, I have to apply much more carefully and with a lighter hand, otherwise I look terrible!
Favorite face primer? Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer. Runner up is Monistat Anti-chaffing Gel Powder.
Oy vey, I forgot to add my HG face primer that I use underneath BB cream: FAB Coconut Moisturizing Primer! My Lumene BB cream lasts all day over it!
Favorite setting powder? I don’t use a specific setting powder
Favorite finishing powder? Guerlain Meteorites in Claire
Favorite face primer? Urban Decay Optical Illusion. It’s the perfect balance between smoothing and hydrating.
Your skin tone/coloring: fair, cool
Favorite setting powder? Okay, so I still don’t quite get the difference between a setting and a finishing powder except that makeup companies have divided these into 2 categories so we’ll buy more stuff (it’s like the whole “essence/toner” thing to me) so here goes….. MAC Prep+Prime Pressed (I like the loose too but it’s messier); Laura Mercier Translucent loose powder; Nars Pressed and Coty Airspun
Favorite finishing powder? as much as I hate the company, I’d say Hourglass Ambient Light Powder in Ethereal and IT’s CC powder (it’s one that came in a face trio and I don’t know if it’s still available nor as it ever been available as a single)
Favorite face primer? Becca Backlight Filter Primer and (DC) Estee Edit Radiance Activator Treat+Prime+Glow. And I have to include Lise Watier’s original face primer in the squeezey tube.
Your skin tone/coloring: Fair/ neutral, black hair, blue eyes
Favorite setting powder? Urban Decay Velvetizer
Favorite finishing powder? I’m never sure how finishing differs from setting, but if I’m looking for a finish different than what I get from UD, I’d say Nars Light Reflecting Setting Powder
Favorite face primer? Armani Fluid Master. The first time I tried it, I was shocked, because it made me look like I was already wearing foundation
Your skin tone/coloring: deep with yellow/neutral undertone
Favorite setting powder? Sasha matte translucent powder
Favorite finishing powder? Fashion Fair pressed powder in Pecan
Favorite face primer? Right now its between Tarte 4 in 1 setting mist or Boscia no more shine T-zone treatment
Your skin tone/coloring: Light medium, yellow tones. Dark brown hair and eyes.
Favorite setting powder? NYX Pro No Filter powder and Mecca MAX Blur Veil are both on heavy rotation at my house.
Favorite finishing powder? Guerlain pressed Meteorites.
Favorite face primer? Anna Sui, hands down. And I’ve tried a lot! The First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie comes a close second though.
Your skin tone/coloring: Very fair with neutral undertones. Type is oily.
Favorite setting powder? E.l.f. HD Powder in Sheer and BareMinerals Mineral Veil in Translucent; for a matte face, Wet n Wild CoverAll Pressed Powder in Fair/Light.
Favorite finishing powder? Guerlain Meteorite Pearls in 02 Clair
Favorite face primer? Silicone-based: Nyx Angel Veil Skin Perfecting Primer; Water-based: Too Faced Hangover Rx Replenishing Face Primer
Your skin tone/coloring: Fair to Light with cool undertones
Favorite setting powder? Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder, Translucent
Favorite finishing powder? Guerlain Meteorites Voyage. Love the powder, hate the scent
Favorite face primer? Can’t find one that plays nice with sunscreen and my foundation. I gave up primer in lieu of sunscreen.
Skin tone colouring: NC-20-ish
Favourite powder: RMS Un-cover powder in #2-3 (no finishing powder)
Favourite primer: Vapour has a fabulous one but i find that using a beauty oil (Kjaer Weis, RMS) actually works better than any primer. Makes my foundation look luminous (and i have combination skin).
Your skin tone/colouring: Porcelain with pink undertones
Favourite setting powder? Currently I am using Rimmel’s Ultra Translucent setting powder and it is great. Before that I used the Laura Mercier one, which for $57, which had the same effect as Rimmel’s and was disappointing for the price.
Favourite finishing powder? I don’t use one.
Favorite face primer? Nude by Nature Face Primer – a fantastic primer that can be used on the eyelids and is cruelty free. Easily available in Aus and is often on sale.
Your skin tone/coloring: Light neutral leaning cool mature skin
Favorite setting powder? La Mer (old version, haven’t tried new)
Favorite finishing powder? Laura Gellar Balance and Brighten. Shades run darker than expected. It is a powder foundation, but I only use a light dusting as finushing.
Favorite face primer? Smashbox photo finish primer water. I do not enjoy the silicony feeling
of many primers or even just that added step and layer. Fab coconut and Marc Jacobs are ok, but I really like the snashbox paired with EL double wear foundation right now.
And finishing too. ..got fake nails and now can’t type ?
Your skin tone/coloring: NC15 w/some redness
Favorite setting powder? Too Faced Primed and Poreless, Bourjois or NARS
Favorite finishing powder? Hourglass Ambient Lighting powders
Favorite face primer? Too Faced Hangover Rx or FAB Coconut Smoothie
Your skin tone/coloring: very pale and neutral, kind of nc10-15.
Favorite setting powder? chantecaille loose powder. It is pricy, but lasts forever and never enhances dry patches. does not travel well, unfortunately.
Favorite finishing powder? hourglass dim light, but only on the high points. Otherwise I look like I got hit in the face with a glitter bomb.
Favorite face primer? Marc Jacobs coconut primer is fantastic for my 40 year old, dry skin. Burberry fresh glow in nude radiance is a close second.
Your skin tone/coloring: light to medium with warm undertones, MAC NC 23-25 ish
Favorite setting powder? MAC Mineralize Skinfiinish Natural
Favorite finishing powder? Guerlain Meteorites Perles in Medium 03
Favorite face primer? Either YSL Blur Primer or MAC Strobe Cream in Peachlite
Your skin tone/coloring: fair/cool skin, gray eyes, brown hair with natural red highlights and naturally occurring random strands of blonde and blue.
Favorite setting powder? CoverGirl Clean Pressed Powder (brown compact, not a powder foundation) in 120 Creamy Natural.
Favorite finishing powder? I don’t know if setting and finishing powders are different or what the difference is, so I’ll just say the CoverGirl above.
Favorite face primer? I don’t really use primer, but I have an unopened sample of Bare Minerals Prime Time primer that I’m thinking of using on a stubborn zit to see if it’ll help it conceal better.
Update: I never ended up using that Prime Time sample-it was really old and gloppy, so I just pitched it.
Fair to light/neural
Setting powder is LaMer The Powder and finishing is Hourglass
HG face primer would be Too Faced RX and Guerlain L’or. I’m also loving the new Tatcha silk canvas
Your skin tone/coloring: Fair with neutral undertones and freckles.

Favorite finishing powder? the Hourglass ambient lighting palette
Favorite face primer? First Aid Beauty Coconut Smoothing Priming Moisturizer

Fave setting powder: Laura Mercier loose setting powder but in summer Privacy UV face powder 50
