Do you wear your makeup differently around family?

Do you wear your makeup differently around family? Maybe there’s a distinction between immediate family and extended family?

I definitely tend to go more neutral/natural around my extended family, though they all know and support the blog (it is slightly embarrassing but very cute, but my uncles/aunts and cousins will tell their clients/customers at work about the blog). I find it’s more appreciated when it’s like that, as opposed to brighter makeup, but I’ve been leaning towards softer looks more often than not these days!

I hate my family, so I don’t care what kind of makeup I’m wearing when they’re around ’cause I couldn’t care less about what they have got to say about me anymore.

Lately, I wear what I want with whomever. I actually did a brilliant aqua/green look w/ JW and got sooo many comments from my sister in-law (who never complements me)! I just go where my mood and my clothing takes me…

Nope. I’ve been fascinated by makeup and nail polish for so long that they just take it in stride, although my father does gripe if I pluck my eyebrows “too thin.”

I wear similar makeup to work and around my family: neutral and pretty safe. Maybe a red lipstick or a smokey eye on occasion, but nothing too out there. I reserve the bright looks and the hot pink lipstick for parties and such.

I did this yesterday. I was going to wear a green smokey eye and then remembered that I was going to dinner with my grandparents. So I opted for peachy neutrals. I don’t necessarily do that if its my parents or sister but with my grandparents I’m a little less bold.

Not really – although I do like color, I don’t tend to be outlandish in my looks either. That said, I will keep the event in mind, so if an occasional calls for something softer, I’ll do that to stay appropriate.

Around my family in general I’ll limit it to just mascara, some eyeliner on the upper waterline, foundation, and maybe some subtle touches (a bit of blush, highlighter or nude eyeshadow) but more often than not just the first three. If it’s just my parents and/or sister I’ll be a bit more daring with my eyeshadow, but around my extended family it’s definitely just the no-makeup makeup.

i only wear tinted moisturizer around family, and they think even that is to much! anything else and i’ll start getting zombie, hooker, or clown comments. :<

Ugh, why is family like that? Sometimes I get that too. I love to play with makeup and I know for a fact I don’t look as bad as they say. One of my sisters barely wears any makeup at all and she always looks tired and sick. Just ignore them, they’re projecting.

I tend to tone it down a little bit when I’m with my extended family. They don’t see me regularly so I know they’ll be more criticizing / shocked with how I do my makeup, especially since our clan is on the conservative side. I just play up EITHER my eyes OR lips. But when I’m with my immediate family and friends, I’m more comfortable wearing bolder makeup.

Cat Avatar

Nope! Never even thought about it, although I think they would say something if they thought my makeup wasn’t appropriate for the event. But usually they just compliment it!

Lee Avatar

Only because I don’t live near most of my family. When I fly, I usually just take some versatile neutrals and maybe two lipsticks so I don’t have a lot to choose from.

Marie Avatar

I used to tone it way down, but not anymore. If they don’t like it, then just don’t look at me. Problem solved. Life is way too short to limit yourself and be afraid. *shrugs*

Depending on the occasion, it’s either “au naturel” or bolder looks! My extended cousins & aunts love it when I wear bolder makeup as they shy away from doing so themselves!

Now more so often but I’ve always wore brighter make up and my uncle even made fun of me once and said I looked like Mimi off Drew Carey (I didn’t! People around here aren’t use to different things plus he’s old lol). Think that stopped me from wearing bright eyeshadows? Nope, sometimes I do wonder if my make up is a tad bold for work but I figure if they had a problem they’d say something and I do tone it down a bit lip wise. Like I’d probably never wear my Milan Black Cherry unless it was a light swipe because it’s just so dramatic. I do wear bright reds though. For my family I’d never tone it down cuz most of the time my sister is actually really impressed with my eyeshadow and she compliments me on it often.

Faye Avatar

No, I wear it just the same. I wear whatever I feel like, usually fairly neutral but around xmas I rock a lot of glitter, I also wear ‘Absolem’, this awesome green from UD’s alice pallette quite a lot and even to work, and get nothing but compliments. My family don’t care what I wear.

Sara Avatar

Funnily enough I do. My makeup tends to be more softer and more neutral around family. I do use a ‘pop’ of colour now and then though depending on my mood/outfit 😛

Veronica Avatar

My sister absolutely cannot stand anything but neutral/natural makeup and will make her opinion known right away how she feels about it. I’ve learned to keep it toned down around her, but sometimes I’ll bring out the bright lipsticks just to spite her. My mother’s more open-minded about it and likes to see what I can do with it – she’s actually my double-check most days if I think my makeup is heading into the territory of “too much.” (It helps that my growing collection means she can steal from it.) Most other people in the family are people we don’t get along with, so I could care less about their opinions. 😀

Mel Avatar

Well, yes. I used to rock really colorful looks, but my mom said it was distracting and taking away from my face, so I’ve been wearing mostly neutrals ever since, which is fine I like the neutral look on me more anyway. With extended family I try to go more on the sophisticated side, because my mom’s sisters are very opinionated and if you don’t look classy they will most certainly tell you about it.
