The Details
Per Norvina’s Instagram: “I made this palette for my mom @anastasiabeverlyhills. She is a neutrals and likes what she likes. I’ve been staring at the same hues of shadows in her makeup drawers since I was little. In truth it’s not just for her, it’s for everyone that loves this color story & wants shadows that melt on your skin and are packed with pigment. I created 7 new shades, used 3 from MR & incorporated my moms favorite ABH single shades which happen to be nudes Sienna & Orange Soda.
There’s also Noir, because some of my favorite bridal makeup is a cat eye using mostly shadow that some of my favorite MUA’s create.
My philosophy on using existing single shades of those that are in a palette is this; if I can create a brand new shadow that isn’t in the line wonderful, however if some of the shades that work within the configuration are close enough to be an existing shadow, I’m not naming the new one something else and making you purchase a shadow that you can’t find as a single should you hit pan. Fair is fair & beloved shadows especially neutrals don’t exactly go out of style.”

I like that the shades are lighter without being chalky (as far as I can tell), but there’s really nothing new here. Mostly warm neutrals AGAIN. Half the colors look like Mod Ren, or very close. Sigh. I’m starting to think no one’s going to come out with an all cool palette this spring. 🙁

I agree! It’s a shame when they have such a great formula and then go and mess things up. I like a brand that’s steadfast and reliable. Is that even a thing anymore?
Norvina said it’s going to be the Mod. Ren. formula. I personally liked the last two palettes, but that’s just me.
There It’s so little variation in ABH palettes it makes you wonder why they bother. That she’s trying to play it off as awesome that they aren’t renaming shades isn’t, it’s still lazy.
This looks a perfect palette for work looks. Hopefully it is the same formula as the Modern Renaissance. I will wait for the reviews to come out (and I should have finished panning a palette then to potentially make room for this one).
Looks like ABH is trying to recapture the magic of MR by…actually reusing MR shades. Looks pretty meh at first glance but who knows, maybe the swatches will be more interesting than they appear from this pic.
I am going to be positive and say that I am sure ABH will have learnt from the backlash re the Subculture palette and have created a much better one and that these pastels will win the hearts of many.
(I was going to say how much I dislike pastels and that they often end up disappointing in quality etc)
I have a lot of these shades so this may nit be for me; not that I don’t like the colors, am just full up on warm neutrals. I do hope for ABH’s sake that the Subculture lessons were learned and this is good quality.
I wouldn’t call myself a neutrals girl but it looks like something I would like. I don’t own any ABH that palettes and the MR palette was a bit too trendy for me (I like to go the singles route for trend colors). Look forward to your review.
I, for one, am excited! I just keep failing to pull the trigger on MR: I put it in my cart, I change my mind. I put it back in, I take it out again, bc I already have a pretty heavily pink/red custom MAC palette. I don’t think I’ll hesitate with this one. I think it looks beautiful.
It took me forever to get the MR! It looks beautiful, but sad to say it left me severely underwhelmed. And I bought it pretty much solely for the reds! I found myself using the neutrals like 99% of the time, so i ended up giving it away. Super excited though that these are pretty much all neutrals with a couple pinks (not as harsh as reds)!
Looks like I’m one of the few to be excited about this palette! I never bought Modern Renaissance because I don’t like how red-based shades look on me. This one looks like the MR where the reddish shades have been replaced with more wearable, neutral alternatives. If the quality is there, this one could be my first ABH eyeshadow palette.

honestly this is just so incredibly boring to me. do companies not care about customer feedback at all? even people who love warm tones and neutrals are sick of them. whatever, money saved for a cooler toned nicely formulated palette… if it ever comes out.
It’s a beautiful palette. The problem is that I already have the Modern Renaissance and I don’t need a pink version of it when I still haven’t hit pan on any shades in MR.
I’m sure I have these shades 5 million times over but darned if I don’t want this one to add to my collection! It looks beautiful!
As usual, too many warm shades for me, but it looks like a softer, spring version of MR. Lets hope the product quality is as good as MR, and not a fail like Subculture.
Yeah I’ll wait for the Bad Habit dupe. Honestly there’s only a few shades I want and the rest I own.
I understand Norvina’s logic and it sounds good but I have to agree with Carrie, it’s lazy to not make all new shades for the palette. Seriously why another warm palette with tons of neutrals????
I’m in the mom (more like grandmom) category and was initially excited about this. I basically just want transition shades of every hue. That’s not gonna happen, right? Yep, I’m wrinkled and dark shades skip and shimmers look like I face-planted on quartz pavement. Does anyone else look at palettes and count? That’s what I do. There are 6 probably good shades for me here, and then I added up the remainder to equal a generous potential 2. So 8 outta 14. Pass!
I also count useful shades in palettes when I decide what to buy.
I’ve yet to figure out the algorithm, but I’m working on it. 😉

If you like soft colours and have issues finding good shimmers I highly advice viseart Paris nude. The shimmer is nothing intense or in your face but I have the feeling it could suits your preferences. I used it on my mother several times and it was lovely on her eyelids (she turns 70 soon!)

I’m the same way! Have you tried the UD Ultimate Basics palette? Nice collection of transition shades that aren’t shimmery or glittery at all and work great with other colors you already have. Tarte’s Clay Play Vol. 1 is also really nice for this purpose. I haven’t reached that grandmom age quite yet, but I find myself using these palettes more often than anything because of the exact issues you describe!
Thank you for mentioning those – I have the UD Ultimate Basics palette and love it, ditto on the Clay Play 1. In addition, It Cosmetics eyeshadow formula works really well for me, and I have also found that neutral blushes and bronzers are more subtle than eyeshadows in the same shade family.
I’m right there with you, Holly, I’m literally a grandmother! TBH, if I didn’t have ModRen I would probably get this new palette, but I can’t justify the cost when several of the colors are repeats, and I have the other neutrals in other palettes. Plus I’m currently on a no-buy of any palette that includes a solid black, which is pretty much Every. Single. Palette released in the past few months. Enough, already.
I’m beginning to think that ABH is not for me at all. I look at their Instagram page and see all these lovely young women who trowel on the heavy makeup and go from looking like 20-year-olds with beautiful skin to looking like 40-year-old plastic drag queens. I want to tell them all they’ll look old fast enough, why rush it?
I’m 62, so no spring chicken! ModRen is the only ABH palette I own or have any interest in. I am no longer gonna buy a darned thing that won’t provide me with what I want. Maybe I’m just cranky, but I don’t enjoy shuffling palettes and singles around to achieve what I want to.
I know what you mean about the IG look, and I watch people on YouTube piling on the makeup over their beautiful skin and just hope they whip that bit right off when they’re not filming. Makeup can definitely be artistic and a statement or just downright fun, but at the end of the day I dunno … don’t people want to look their best? However, I do realize that it’s highly likely that my concept of what that is is probably outdated. Sigh …
Yeah, I’m not “au courant” when it comes to modern fashions. I miss the much more natural look of the ’70s — glowy skin with freckles and all, natural eyebrows, fun eyeshadows (not 5000 shades of warm brown). I DON’T miss overtweezed eyebrows and frosty lips, though! 😉
It will take a while, but everything that’s fashionable today will eventually fall out of favor. Always does.

It’s sadly the ABH look and I don’t care for it either. All I can think of is if it looks that heavy in photos, it’s got to look so much thicker in person.

The marketing people put in late hours trying to make this sound novel. “In truth it’s for everyone.” Unconvincing because everyone already owns or has already seen the many look-alikes.
I wish they’d rather add By Mario palette to the permanent line. Or make this one colder. I have a feeling that ABH team have some problems with cold tones.
If you go on Shop Hush, Bad Habit just came out with a dupe of the Mario palette. It’s called the Artistry palette. Their other palettes have all been very good. I just ordered it a few days ago.

Svetlana, I have the Mario palette and really like it. I think it’s a shame it isn’t permanent or that they’ve not re-released it but as it’s a collaboration with that makeup artist, I guess there are all sorts of complications in re-releasing it (having to do with using his name, royalties, etc.)
I agree with you. Well, they could try to “dupe” it with closely related colours. I have an impression, that more people own MR than the Mario palette (for instance, I think they started to develop world-wide distribution after the release of the Mario palette, and, moreover, it’s was a LE). I mean, people already complaining that they see self-plagiarism in new ABH releases. Then why not to turn it into more money then?)

Dusty Rose looks pretty, but the rest of it made me think wuh wuh. This will be an easy pass for me fortunately. I hate to say it, but I’ve been feeling my love affair with ABH died a long time ago. I’d even go far as to say I regret my Black Friday but from 2016; I just don’t reach for them and the whole Subculture handling just left me feeling put off. That wasn’t even my taste in palettes, but the response was just sloppy and I’m not sure I’m invested enough to care again.

Norvina has come out and said this will be the same formula as the MR, which makes me happy. I had the MR and gave it away because, as much as i loved the reds in it, i found myself being stuck with the same 1-2 looks with it. I’m super excited with the amount of transition shades (which makes sense since those get used the most), and the fact that this seems to be a fail-safe everyday palette because of the neutral shades and blendability of the MR formula.

As much as I love the quality of the shadows in my Modern Renaissance, this looks super boring! I wish there were more cool tones to accompany Dusty Rose. Also, blue and pink fuzzy packaging is one thing, but brown? Nah.
Fuzzy packaging has to go – every time I see one that’s been used/handled it’s so disgusting. I can’t.

While I understand what you’re saying – it isn’t just eye shadow dust. It’s that, actual dust, plus whatever product, oils, dirt and bacteria are on your fingers or counter tops when handling and using it. I don’t want to be nasty, but if you understand what dust is actually comprised of (I’m not saying that anyone isn’t maintaining hygiene either) then you get where the ick factor comes in. A flocked palette is going to trap all of that in it like a carpet and unless you’re going to hoover the exterior, that’s where it’s going to stay. At least with other packaging you can wipe it down with a makeup wipe or something to get the other product and oils, etc off it.
That’s just my personal feelings about them and why I don’t own anything in that packaging style. To each their own however.

Didn’t I read a tease somewhere that ABH was issuing a COOL palette? To belabor the obvious, this is NOT it. I keep threatening myself to do a cool 8 pan through ABH. But, iirc, that’d be 72. Might be smarter to wait and see if they actually do a cooler one. I like some of these shades and agree with N about the suitability for an oldie like me. Maybe this is a tad more colorful, but it’s basically yet another warm. neutral. palette. Feeling inspired? No? me either.
Why am I so inextricably drawn to this??? WHY? For some reason, I’m already in love with it, and I usually don’t go for such a soft theme!
Because the shadows display is smart!! You have this many times over in your collection, I am certain of it!
I’ve got a funny feeling that you are probably right, Marie-Estelle…I think that what I may really need to do is put all my neutral and semi-neutral MAC and CP singles in one very large, secure magnetized palette. Because then I’ll see it all in one glance!
If you have to many code dupes don’t include them in your magnetise palette and make two with different fun shimmer /matte shades. I find it harder to use the said palette otherwise. You could also totally dupe this palette with your singles collection and tweak it a bit to suit your mood or preference. I have seen ppl do that lately and that is brilliant! (antihaulblog.blogspot.nl is a good example!)

Click through to IG and you’ll see a crown emoji in there that didn’t make it over – so “She’s a neutrals queen” is how it really reads.
Initially, I was hating on the repeat shades BUT.. I think this is a palette that could really work for me. Buon Fresco (MR) and Lure (Prism) are two of my absolute favourites shadows, so I’m curious to see how Dusty Rose compares.
I use Cyprus umber for my brows and Tempera is another absolute favourite of mine that I’ve got in back ups as singles as I was tearing through the MR pan, so I’m glad to see it make an appearance here.
Overall, this palette looks like a workhorse and I’ll definitely be picking it up
Dusty Rose is so close, just less grey in it. I have the single for my travel makeup, really a lovely color.
I don’t own any ABH palette and I mostly wear neutrals… if the formula is good I might cave and get this. Nothing overwhelming for a palette collector, though, but that’s not my case
This palette is clearly not targeting beauty enthousiasts. If the quality is good it can be a nice palette for beginners.
As for me… Nothing interesting here. I am in an ultra shimmer mood and cooler tones. I have enough lovely warm shades!
It doesn’t help that I only am excited by what viseart could bring out… And the hope that Tom Ford will release more quads with the gelée formula like in nude deep (I would die over a burgundy and or purple one… ????)

I just read Norvina’s quote (above) about not releasing the same or similar shades and just giving them new names (a la Tarte!) but, seriously? I honestly don’t believe ABH is all that different from all the other companies who do this…..2 shadows are just a smidge different (not enough that the average person would even notice) but the newer one is touted as being completely different and given a new name. I do like the idea of keeping the name and being honest about it (Vermeer is a perfect example) but I don’t know that ABH is entirely innocent of the very practice Norvina mentions.
It’s a nice typical palette honestly. I’m disappointed that ABH put out such a normal palette, I was hoping for something that would make me think about how to use the shades in a less typical way and not have to pull out other eyeshadows.
I think this is a lovely compilation–not perfect. I don’t think I’ve ever used the black in any of my palettes, come to think of it. I do like that it is soft and “neutral” because I bought so many crazy, intensely-hued neon and red/plum or jewel-toned metallic palettes this year that I use one colour at a time, or only one or two shades from the entire palette, and they are taking up way too much room in my drawer.
I can see taking this on my work trips and using it frequently, cutting down on my carry-on weight.

This palette looks very pleasing to the eye, and I can see my mother liking it. For myself though, with already an abundance of neutrals, I don´t see the need to add it to my collection.
I like the soft colors but repeating 3 of the MR colors is not appealing to me.
The only shade that looks remotely interesting is Mulberry. Everything else looks boring and more boring. I also own the Viseart Neutrals palette, so I’m set with neutral shades. That palette is pretty perfect and a perfect palette to pair with others. I know people hated Subculture & Prism, but I really liked those palettes. They were interesting and worked well for me. I feel like I’m one of the few people who hated Modern Renaissance and this palette screams Modern Renaissance to me. So this is an easy skip for me.
I’ll be purchasing for sure. No more palettes in 2018. I’ve got a problem!

As far as I can tell, there are only maybe seven original shades in there.
Burnt Orange, Sienna, Dusty Rose, and Noir are all available as singles. Cyprus Umber [also in Prism?] and Tempera can be found in the Modern Renaissance palette.
That leaves a consumer with
Glistening,
Rustic,
Bronze,
Sultry
Rose Pink,
Fairy
and Mulberry
and I am sure a few of the new ones look a lot like an already available shade.
I wonder how the quality of this will be!
Am I the only one who thinks of the Gwen Stefani eye palette by UD when they see this? They look very similar. I’m not saying ABH is a copycat, Its just funny to me lol. I still plan on buying this though!
For those interested, this is up on the ABH site today, February 14th. I’d probably get it if (a) I didn’t already have Mod Ren, and (b) if it didn’t have a black in it. The last thing I need is another warm-toned palette with a black (which I never use, very aging) shadow. But it is very pretty if these colors work for you!
