For me, it always seems to be shade, then formula, then price. I’m very fussy about the shade, so when I see one I like, I zoom right in. As far as formula, I like opaque coverage with a little slip. If I can get 1 and 2, I will negotiate with myself how much I want it vs how much it costs. I haven’t exceeded $37 yet.

I’m a sucker for a plummy brown or oxblood red. I prefer cream finishes, but I also have these colors in other finishes ranging from matte to very glossy. No shimmer though-I don’t like any shimmer on my lips.

A soft, comfortable matte always wins me over. Pat McGrath’s mattes are the most comfortable lipsticks I have ever had the pleasure of using. If all mattes could be formulated like that then I would be so happy!

So if the matte is comfortable and non drying, I’m immediately interested.

Color, which at this point would have to be something special, given how much I already have. However, when L’Oreal released the new matte range a few months back, I got pretty excited, as I was curious how it would compare to the range they did some 15+ years ago, and was my absolute favorite. I did end up buying half the shades though, because the colors were quite appealing (especially the one only available in Europe that I had to buy on eBay).

Color, a MLBB berry tone, followed by opacity (one swipe color) and finally a satin finish–it wears well, doesn’t move around and doesn’t make my lips look 400 years old?

I’m back on a sheer but pigmented kick. (opposite of what is out there 🙂 ) Armani lip sheer type lipsticks. Also really creamy creams in any finish. No matte.

First, brand recognition. I need to know it’s a brand I typically like. Then color & formula. I like creme finish lipsticks that have some cling to them, so they don’t swipe right off.

What would get me interested in a lipstick would be if it were in my kind of shade: a spicy cinnamon shade, a rich berry or a red.
It would then have to be moisturising, creamy with a shine – no matte effect thank you.
Reasonably priced and easily accessible, should I want a back up.

Nothing, I hope, since I’ve put myself on a no buy for lipsticks/lip products. Otherwise it has to be a unique formula or color that I’m excited to wear for me to break that rule. I like a variety of lip products. Stains, glosses, creamy mattes, lustres, satins, metallics, liquid lips etc. Just don’t like big flakes of glitter since they burn. Finally milled is ok. I like if lip products fade nicely too

Having just finished a lipstick declutter I can say that color is my immediate concern. I had over 250 lipsticks when I gathered them all together and 90% of them were in berries, reds, plums and mauves. The remainder were “other” shades. You know the IG posts or jokes with two lipsticks that look virtually the same but just ever so slightly different. That’s me. After color it is finish. I prefer something lightly emollient with good pigmentation and some staying power. I do not mind reapplying as long as it looks good, reapplies without making a mess and doesn’t drift out of my lip lines. Anything that sucks the life out of my lips is not worth it unless the shade is so incredibly unique and then only if I can make it work with a balm over/under or both. Color first though.

First shade, then creaminess but with staying power. As I’ve gotten older I find I do less eye makeup and focus on skin and a beautiful color lip can brighten your whole look. I lean towards cool tones in all shade ranges.

Hmmmm…honestly I own so many lipsticks that I really don’t know how to answer. I have favorite shades and finishes and formulas for different brands. I’d say 2 dealbreakers for me are if a formula sucks the moisture out of my chronically dry lips (I have a hard time with mattes) and if a lipstick has too much slip and migrates all over the place such as my teeth or outside my lip line. Occassionally my chin or lower half of my face although I cannot tell you how that happened. Besides that it’s pretty much game on as far as lipsticks go. I cannot get enough!!!

Christine — I adore plums – and dark blood reds – especially if they look like they would be matte but ultra creamy and long lasting. I love high-end lippies, it’s my downfall – I suppose because I know the more you pay (most of the time) the better the quality!! The one that I was totally not impressed with was Bite lipstick — I have a beautiful brownish burgundy multistick and it’s just awful. Ish!! I never wear it, so it was totally a waste of money. Anyway — Diva by MAC is my ultimate favorite right now – and Arabesque by Colour Pop!!

I love metallic and holo. Also if it’s a new one from a brand I really like, like MAC, I’ll give it a look. If it looks great in picture/video, I’ll give it a look. And if it’s highly recommended by YouTubers, celebs, people on boards like this one, I’ll check it out. I love to buy new lipsticks.
