Have you had makeup destroyed by pets/family?

Have you had makeup destroyed by pets/family? (Presumably on accident!) Share your disaster stories!

Nope — Mellan totally knows and respects makeup, even if it gets left on the floor or on the coffee table (aka within nose reach). He’s eaten a drumstick (from Rock Band) and a wooden camel figure–can you tell he has a penchant for wood?–but never anything makeup. I didn’t have makeup when I lived at home, and my boyfriend hasn’t broken anything yet!

my cat used to do that too! the kabuki brush was his favourite. I’ve just given him a cheap one to play with now haha.

And my boyfriend dropped my mac palette on the floor (tiled!) while we were on holiday last month. Thankfully the eyeshadows survived for the most part or he would have been replacing them as soon as we got home!!

John Avatar

Nope thankfully. However, my sister did sit on my iPod today, so now there are lines of pixels in the center that don’t work anymore. :[ However, it’s not all bad because, one, it was my fault for leaving it there and two, it gives me the perfect excuse to pick up an iPhone since my cellphone contract is almost over. Teehee.

Nora Avatar

My cat likes to play kick-ball with lipsticks and other rolly things, but she’s very good about leaving them be usually, and I have makeup EVERYWHERE, haha!

Anne-Sophie Avatar

Ohhh dear. My two chihuahuas LOVE to get a sneak peek in my purse just in case they would find a lipgloss. They love plastic lip glosses, and they love to sneak around my things. So I’m more careful! But they always do these kinda things when you’re not home, or at least not around, so you can’t tell them it’s wrong… Sadly.

Lulle Avatar

Unfortunately yes, my cat Ernesto once jumped on my knees, right on top of the Too Faced Quickie Chronicles palette I had there… The blush got broken and there’s still a print of his paw in one of the lipsticks, my favourite of course!

Alycia Avatar

I can safely say that I have never had my makeup ruined by pets or family. My dog is not interested in any of it, and I keep it up too high for her to reach. I have, however, had makeup stolen by my cousin. I assume she thinks I am an idiot, as she continues to pinch it from my room, even though she’s the only one who has been in my room other than me at the time it goes missing. I assume this counts under “ruined” as I now have to keep her favourite brands (or at least, the ones she pilfers most often – Mac, NARS, Dior, etc.) in a completely different spot to keep them safe. It’s ridiculous.

Julie Avatar

Yes. My baby cousin once dropped a chanel eyeshadow and it crumbled into powder. My brother also dropped my Naked Palette and one of the shadows broke in there. he’s also dropped by brushes twice.

But it’s always been accidents and sure I was upset at the time but it’s easy to get over it because at the end of the day it’s just make up.

Lauren Avatar

My dog loves the scented stuff, but only so much as he’ll try to sniff/lick my face as I’m applying it! Other than that, he ate one of my eyeliner pencils when he was a puppy, but he never bothered anything else again.

Leah Avatar

Luckily, my makeup gets left alone for the most part. My sister used to have sticky fingers when it came to MAC eyeshadows but I’ve bought her some of her own to use and I think she’s out of that phase.

Kristi Avatar

YES – My dog Dexter chewed up my Urban Decay Sustainable Palette within a couple days of getting it… He destroyed one color (the darkest shade, which stained the carpet!) and a couple had bite marks but were otherwise okay – but the wood lid was completely chewed to bits. Oh I was soooooo mad! Luckily he’s never done it since.

Helena Avatar

I feel like I can safely say that my dog has eaten something when we were both younger, but I couldn’t tell you what (lipgloss, I think?).

Not family or a pet, but this just happened a couple of weeks ago–I lost MAC Aristocat lipstick at school, and was told that the cleaning crew had found it and *thrown it away*. I was LIVID. Who throws away lipstick?! That was my belonging (a limited-edition, relatively expensive one, on top of that). Are you supposed to throw away lost items when you find them, now, or was it because it was “just” makeup?
I actually also lost my iPod, which I don’t mind nearly as much–that’s easily replaceable (not that I don’t think whoever took it and hasn’t returned it is a little s***head…I do).

Tigress Avatar

No, and I intend to keep it that way. I keep my makeup brushes off of my vanity so my cats wont get to them. One of my cats in particular loves to jump up onto the vanity and bat things into the sink, so I try to remember to put everything away once I’m finished putting on my makeup.

Jill Avatar

I have a small yorkie/chihuahua mix and when she was a puppy there were countless times I would enter a room and wonder why it smelled like mint, bubblegum, candy, etc etc only to discover that my lipglosses and lipbalms were chewed up on the floor! I learned, only after several SoftLips and Victoria’s Secret lipglosses were eaten, to not leave anything in my pockets or within reach of her!

I’m so glad I have good habits of safe-keeping now since I buy a lot of MAC, Urban Decay, and NARS products which I consider more difficult to replace.

Maryla Avatar

My niece “played” with one of my eyeshadows a few years ago, and dug it all up with the end of the sponge tip applicator inside. It was salvageable though.
Boyfriend dropped an already broken eyeshadow once, turning it to dust. But I had a back up so it was ok.
Dog has chewed the top of a body spray bottle, once again, salvageable.

My bunny likes to take my mum’s hair curlers of her lap and run away with them. He’s broken a few in the process, but its so cute she doesn’t really mind.

Cindy v Avatar

My dad drove over (yes with a car) my moms makeup over the summer, somehow when they went on a weekend getaway they didn’t zipper the bag shut all the way, and BAM he ran over a hard plastic Tupperware box with around $200 worth of makeup… Surprisingly enough, some of it survived (ud palette, Mac lipstick) but other stuff… Hmm not so much… Good thing I told my mom to not bring her limited edition stuff, like mineralized eyeshadows from Mac which are her favorites

Miranda Avatar

I had this wonderful Jane Iredale Powder Brush that was just perfection, and my little sister thought it would be a great idea to cut off all of the hairs and use the nub of a brush to apply glue to school projects. i’m pretty sure i started foaming at the mouth when i saw that.

Honi Avatar

My cat has a think for my chapsticks.. She steals them from my vanity when i sleep (Cause she knows its bad) and then she runs.. And she ALWAYS manages to get the cap of and the chapstick gets all ruined so i have to chop off a bit for it to work again.. Silly cat.. :p

Li Wen Avatar

My weimaraner chewed on one of my Rouge G’s (66 Gracia), which fell out of my handbag. It was so mangled that I couldn’t get the lid off anymore, so I had to throw it out.

Yazmin Avatar

When i first bought my mac pallette, my little brother thought it would be clever to run a pair of scissors through the middle of each eyeshadow! Thankfully they were either veluxe pearl or frost and could be fixed with with alcohol.

My kittens had a a few chews of my vino lipliner.

Mariella Avatar

When my daughter was about 2, she got into an Estee Lauder cream blush that I’d left on the counter. It was bright pink and WATERPROOF and she got it all over her face! Getting it off was a nightmare. Daisy (my golden retriever) was far too smart and well behaved ever to do anything to my makeup but my cat did sharpen his claws on my favourite pair of leather boots! That tried our relationship for a short while….

Meera Avatar

The day after I bought my first Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner and brush, I caught my little son “painting” on a sheet of paper! The brush was splayed and my pristine eyeliner was a mess. My son was very proud of his picture, so I smiled and tossed both out.

ann Avatar

Yep. My kitten decided to “help” one day when I was organizing my MU and snuck away with my UD Last Call shadow. Purple eyeshadow on my sheets, rug and my kitten, who is usually white, turned into a fantastic shade of purple.

Duckses Avatar

My cat steals and hides fluffy face brushes, sometimes even while i’m using them. Thankfully she doesn’t do any damage a quick wash doesn’t take care of. But it’s a bit annoying to put down your powder brush to adjust some concealer or something, and then to have to chase the cat all the way behind the fridge to get it back!

espresso Avatar

When my dog was out of the animal shelter for a few months she ate two of my chapsticks. Not the plastic, just all the greasy stuff inside (however she got it out of there, smart thing) because they’re oily = nourishing. >.<
This was it though, the whole decade that followed she was nice to my make up and beauty items. 😉

Joyce Avatar

My doggie ate not one but TWO of my eos Summerfruit lip balms. I think it’s because he liked the fruity scent, lol. No matter though really–I was trying to use them up out of principle than preference xP

I also had some makeup in the trash that he chewed up and ate, but I don’t care 😉 Otherwise, my makeup is all located out of reach for him!

Saffy Avatar

Lol, my cat is the bane of my existence. He’s destroyed a couple of lipsticks, broke my bottle of Marc Jacobs Lola, and shattered my Nars Albatross and Douceur blushes after forcefully pushing them off the vanity (he decided he wanted to sit where they were laying).

Raquel Avatar

yup, my dog Dharma has eaten lipsticks some while ago, now i’m more carefull with my make up but some weeks ago i just spotted a brand new sephora lipstick on her bed. fortunately it was still intact !!

Christina Avatar

I had to find out the hard way that my dog likes makeup brushes. I caught him with my MAC 224 and now there’s lovely teeth marks on the handle. The other day I caught him trying to sneak an ELF brush. Sigh

Laura Avatar

Yeah!!!! I had one of my paletter on the bed. My dog was in the bedroom too and I was maaking my self up. Don´t know how but but, when I realize, he was on the bed with my palette on his mouth…

BrendaG Avatar

My 3 year old daughter atually got into my lipsticks and 1 blusher. She ruined 5 MAC lipsticks trying to put them on, and a cream blush. She had an array of colors on her face! Only reason why I cringed and had a heart attack, is cause she managed to finish off my So Scarlet! Either way, I couldn’t stop laughing!

Lindsay Avatar

Thank goodness no. My dog just destroys her own toys. Bought her a rubber toy dog and it took her less than five minutes to get one of the ears off. Now we have to spend a lot of time in the dog toy aisle trying to find a toy she won’t chew apart.

Becca Avatar

I don’t have any pets and I live with my parents and 9 year old sister. the only one who’s destroyed my make-up by accident was me! haha 🙂

Heavenly Avatar

I had an ex boyfriend purposely destroy basically a bag full of makeup that I had recently. Dumped my Ben Nye Neutral Set all over the bag, rolled my Revlon and MAC lipsticks all the way up into the cap (which I then had to put into palettes) and scarped off all of the shadow down to the pan on MAC’s barbie loves skipper (you can imagine how much that will cost to replace now!!) and Atlantic Blue so that, along with the Ben Nye powder was all spilled out ruined the little bag that I had the stuff in as well. Then a few days later I found three Lowell Cornell Maxine’s Mop eye shadow brushes as just handles now, meaning he cut the whole brush part off!!!

Ericka Avatar

Yes. My son spilled 3 full old pigment jars (Melon, Vanilla, and Blonde’s Gold)on the floor and himself. I spent a good bit of time cleaning him and the floor.

Lee Avatar

I was thinking no but then I just remembered the worst on. A year or so ago I had a small cardboard box that had some random new make-up in it I hadn’t found a place for yet. It was sitting on the bathroom floor and a cat peed in it! (he’s usually perfect with his litter box but he was sick) I threw everything out.

Jill Avatar

The younger of my two cats, Karma, can be hell-on-paws sometimes. She LOVES to scoot small things on surfaces until they fall off. She has obliterated one of my Rock and Republic e/s (“White Heat”) which I sorta salvaged, and she shattered my MAC Peachykeen blush into a million tiny pieces 🙁 Oh, she also obliterated a Physician’s Formula compact.

Amanda Avatar

My cat, who is quite older (17), also likes to scoot stuff around. Every darn morning, she bats at my cell phone and water bottle until they fall off my nightstand. Little stinker!

Duckses Avatar

I’ve resorted to keeping everything on my nightstand, sink and dresser in trays so my cat can’t push it off. She’ll still steal my brushes though.

Leah Avatar

Sadly, yes. My mom’s dog once ate a lipstick and my dog once chewed up a nice eyeshadow brush. I wasn’t happy about either one, however I shouldn’t have had those things in places where the dogs could get to them!

Amanda Avatar

YES!! Okay first my rabbit didn’t destory the makeup but I was sitting on the floor and I just so happen to be using loose eye shadow that day. Well my rabbit decided to come hopping across my space into the eyeshadows spilling them and leaving a little trail of rabbit foot prints along the way! Haha too cute I couldn’t be mad.

This next item was destoryed. My mistake I decided to leave the room with my makeup case open, I come back in and I see something PINK inside my Siberian Huskies mouth….I realize nooooo it’s my Beauty Blender!!! Yup he thought it was a toy and ripped it up 🙁

Emma Avatar

Yes. my dog once ate an entire clinique lipstick. Fortunately she didn’t eat the packaging! It’s normally kept well away from her but I’d dropped it when I was doing my makeup. I wasn’t really bothered about the lipstick, just worried about her health! She was fine though x

Amy Avatar

Definately. I remember when Smashbox came out with their Reflection High Shine lip gloss. My mini schnauzer was just a little pup, and she ate… a whole tube… and a bluetooth headset, all in the same day.

Georgia Avatar

When my friends come round they all run to my makeup and jab their fingers into everything. Or they use my brushes and scrub them in eyeshadow, blush etc and I run after them going “NO! NOOOOOOOOOO!”

Minnie Avatar

Yes!! OMG my daughter was sitting on the bath room counter and she grabbed my Naked palette and scraped it with a comb. Half Baked RIP and the rest were some what spared but they are half gone. Grandma was supposed to be watching her. It had just come out so needless to say it was hard to obtain.

Sara Avatar

well, not pet or fam, but I once had a friend drop one of my palettes which broke several of my MAC eyeshadows. And as these are very expensive in my country, I was midly speaking pissed

Shayna Avatar

When my dog was a puppy he ate 3 MAC lipsticks I had gotten for my birthday previously that week and the NARS Rated R Duo. It left a blue and green stain on my carpet as a constant reminder. 🙁 Luckily he grew out of the chewing thing and I took the carpet out.

Meg Avatar

Yeees! I gave my mom a prolongwear lipcreme from MAC and just when I gave it to her …my little sister took it and smashed it with her tiny fingers… my mom and I were quite sad about it hahaha!

Maya Avatar

lol these stories are too cute. My cat definitely likes certain home items (dried flowers, twist ties to bread bags, contact lens cases) but other than that she will be careful and tiptoe around objects. Sometimes she gets curious when I do my makeup. I normally have it put away, and she’ll come up to sniff and look. If she touches anything, a little disinfecting solves the problem. Who knows what would happen if I left it around her all the time though…haha.

My little sister is much more nosey when it comes to my makeup and skincare items, and I know she’s been through them. And now that I think of it, our cat knocked over and broke her favorite OPI nail polish. My mom was angry about ruining the nice wood dresser and my sister actually cried (she’s a preteen and I swear they’re so sensitive at that age about everything). I had to explain to her that the cat didn’t know what she was doing, mistakes happen, and people have pets who do worse lol. We get a good laugh about that story now!

Christine O Avatar

I cannot have ANY makeup brushes out in the open. My cat steals them. She thinks they are her babies or something. She lays with them and then tries to groom the bristles. do buy her her own brushes but she doesn’t know the difference between her’s or Mommy’s. She especially loves the big, fluffy powder brushes. More bristles don’t ya know? She is a sweetie and I would not trade her for the world but I have to be very careful when putting on my makeup that I do not get too far from my brushes. If I run into the bathroom to wash off some foundation on my hands I have to keep one eye peeled on my makeup desk.

Ayzee Avatar

My UD Naked Palette was almost destroyed by my sister when she was trying to snatch it from my hand. Fortunately, only 1 of the shadows (Gunmetal) was chipped. So yeah. 🙂 But I almost threw a fit! lol.

Janna Avatar

My dog has absolutely no interest in anything in the bathroom other than the water in the toilet (so gross)!

My cats, on the other hand, believe that they own whatever space they wish to occupy at that moment. Both have knocked things off my vanity and have enjoyed batting them around. Thankfully nothing has been too badly mistreated.

My husband did drop one of my MAC eyeshadow palettes once nearly causing me to have a heart attack; I didn’t want to open it to see the damage! Only one was broken, a navy shade called Prussian that is now discontinued, but has broken multiple times since.

Kimberly Avatar

My cat is always stealing my makeup stuff…I have to either put it in drawers or keep the door closed to my bedroom so she can’t get to them..I just bought a new leather Fossil reissue bag and I have to keep it up on a high shelf so that she can’t get to it and scratch it…I have two dogs also but they’re not interested in stuff like that…they only like to chew on my husband’s hats and socks

Neshie Avatar

My cousin dropped my Golden Lariat MSF from the Wonder Woman collection which was like my favorite piece of makeup EVER and it completely broke… I was soooooooo mad I wanted to hit her lol..

Sally Avatar

My cat, Gus, likes to play with my brushes and I often find them underneath the sofa! He also has been known to steal and play with my Jack Black lip balm!

Priscilla Avatar

My family would steal my makeup. It didn’t matter that I’m an NC15, and they all have olive skin. If I didn’t nail my foundation down, they’d steal it. It didn’t matter that it made them look sick. lol

ZoeStellman Avatar

mmmhhhmm. my first dog liked the lipglosses and brushes. the dog i have now is the devil, lol. she loves the lipglosses, eyeshadows, lipsticks, eyeliners/lip pencils. When people come over to stay, we have to tell them to either keep their stuff on the counters or shut ur bags, cos she will go through them. remember coming home to her having a glossy mouth and teeth marks in my mac eyeshadow. I have photo evidence as well, lol She used to have a thing for my old teddy bears eyes and my dads debit cards, lol
