The Details

Kat Von D created these four super-special lipsticks to benefit a cause that is extremely close to her heart—animal advocacy and compassionate vegan living. As a devoted volunteer and supporter, Kat has partnered with Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and provides refuge for factory farm animals. For every lipstick in this collection sold, 20 percent of the retail price will go directly to Farm Sanctuary to support their mission.

Each creamy, color-rich shade was named after a Farm Sanctuary animal. Bruno is a cow that Farm Sanctuary rehabilitated after he fell out of a speeding truck. Julia is a pig who was rescued from abuse at a factory farm. Hilda the sheep was the very first animal to arrive at Farm Sanctuary. Thumbelina the chicken was saved from a trucking crate that tumbled onto the highway during transit.

Hopefully, what I’m going to say won’t be construed the wrong way, or offend anyone, but I would feel like such a hypocrite if I bought any one of these because I love my steak, lamb chops, carnitas and other pork products, and I eat chicken around 3-4 x’s per week. Therefore, how exactly could I ever explain the cause behind one of these lovely ELL’s to anyone without backlash or laughter? Everyone who knows me knows I’m a meat eating carnivore!

There is no perfect vegan/vegetarian/mindful consumer. You can still eat meat and reduce your reliance on animal products in other ways (like avoiding leather products, animal testing, or products that support the meat industry). No hypocrisy detected! It’s not all or nothing. Any help is valuable. Full disclosure: I eat meat too, haha.

I am with you Nancy. I struggle with this because I love my little fur babies and would love to say that I am a vegetarian but I was raised on meat and although I have tried to cut back, I just can’t completely eliminate it from my life. I would be embarrassed to say I was using a product that was dedicated to the vegan/vegetarian position and then order steak for dinner. This is such a huge dilemma for me. I whole heartedly detest animal testing and I believe in quality of life for all sentient beings but I believe we were meant to be carnivores. I don’t want animals whether I am going to consume them or not, to be tortured for the sake of torturing or for my makeup. I go around and around about this in my head!!

My thought is that you can still eat your regular diet and in turn you can buy these products and do a good thing. In working along with The Humane Society of the United States, it’s so important that animals be treated humanely regardless of their destiny. I was a strict vegetarian for a year, very proud with myself, but it’s extremely hard to cut out meat completely. I now eat very little meat products and try to get my protein from nuts, etc. : )

Please, please do not hesitate from supporting causes that help end animal suffering just because you also eat meat. There is no hypocrisy, as I see it. See yourself as a “conscientious omnivore”…If you believe it is the right thing to do, put your heart (and money) into it! Do it BECAUSE you eat meat – to do your part to help ensure that the industry producing your food is monitored and called out by well-funded organizations who speak for the animals! It is not a zero-sum, black-and-white game. As someone else already mentioned every single dollar helps. Thank you so much for opening this line of conversation! 🙂

I really admire Kat von D for trying to promote ethical activism. I find that her social media inspires me to want to consume less animal products, though for me it’s more of an environmental concern. Farm animal sanctuaries is not a cause that speaks to me, but I respect what she is trying to do and I hope she finds her target with these.

The last Kat Von D liquid lipsticks were really great formulas and color but they tended to separate if you didn’t use them for awhile, or at least the shimmer ones did. Hopefully these are as good and long-lasting as the old ones. I will wait for the review.
